He was elected by the members of the Palm Beach Intergroup which meets in West Palm Beach. Since Palm Beach County is the longest county in the State and because of the expenses involved regarding communications/transportation, it was recommended that the county might be split in half to better serve the community as a whole. There were 3 people from the South, 2 from the middle of the county and 2 from the North end of the county. These nine people approved that it would be to the advantage of A.A. as a whole to break the county down. These people called General Services in New York and asked if anything special had to be done to start an Intergroup. They were told “if there is a need - that is all that is required as far as General Service is concerned.” The group then started to request from the groups in the South end of the county if there was an interest on their part to have an Intergroup located in the South end of the county. Out of the 26 groups in the south county, most of them expressed an interest in supporting a SPBC Intergroup. (The forms signed by these groups can be reviewed in the SPBC Intergroup office at any time.) Also, the primary purpose of Intergroup is to handle 12 Step calls in the most effective manner. Right now it is costing $2,500 a month to run the office in West Palm Beach. There will be no full time employees in the South Palm Beach office and the phone expense is minimal (one line $25.45 to cover Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Boynton Beach.) If any group in South Palm Beach wished to stay with the Intergroup in West Palm Beach that is okay. The Group Conscience will determine if a group wants to join SPBC or stay in West Palm Beach. The group only recommended their findings. Formation of Intergroup continued on Page 2...

Flashback: Dateline May 2, 1984 South Palm Beach County Intergroup is Born

Following is an excerpt from the minutes of that very first meeting:

May 2, 1984…….Questions & Answers & Discussion: Q. Hy H. of Boynton Beach asked why this meeting was called? A. Rich L. answered “to form an Intergroup to serve the south part of Palm Beach County”. Q. Mike L. of Delray Beach requested a discussion on how this group/meeting could take place. His home group is concerned about A.A. unity as a whole. A. Buck R. (Delray Beach) responded: “He (Buck) was elected Chairman to look into forming an SPBC Intergroup several months ago. Since Palm Beach County is the longest county in the State and because of the expenses involved regarding communications/transportation, it was recommended that the county might be split in half to better serve the community as a whole. A. Lester N. responded: The office on Atlantic Ave. was rented two weeks ago. Out of the 26 groups in South Palm Beach, 24 of them expressed an interest in joining and supporting South Palm Beach. The office is open and running. Pat B. and Don A. are attending the Intergroup meeting in West Palm Beach to present the forms signed by the 24 groups and to request the use of the phone number originally used in West Palm. The entire expenses for the office in Delray Beach will be less than $500 per month. An Answering Service will provide service from 5 pm until the next morning. The office should and will be manned by volunteers for several months. The 12 Step List is being revised for use in the south end of the county. Mike L. asked where the money came from to open this office? Lester N. stated: Groups already aware of this new office, have donated between $500/$600 so far. There are 2 checks given to me right now, one for $20 and the other for $25. Rick L. responded:Intergroup functions to “carry the message” to the still suffering alcoholic. The office has opened and if any group wishes to participate in both Intergroups the Group conscience will so elect. Ron Martin stated: If Intergroup has opened, then officers should be elected at this time.

Annual Intergroup Gratitude Dinner

Friday, November 21, 2008 Embassy Suites Hotel- Boca Raton

Speaker Suggestions- The theme for this year’s dinner is “Gratitude in Action.” If you would like to recommend a speaker with a good message about gratitude and service, please call Pam at the Intergroup Office and leave the suggested speaker name and phone number. You may also drop off a tape of the speaker for committee consideration.

What Constitutes a Good Sponsor, as Minneapolis

(Many groups have used to good advantage the sponsor

system, one of which is outlined below. Other methods

followed by other groups will be outlined in subsequent

issues.)

1. Sincerity in A.A. and dry for certain length of time.

2. Must have friendly attitude toward new member. If that is not possible, do not accept the sponsorship.

3. Work on only one member at a time.

4. Come to all the classes with the new member.

5. Keep in close touch by telephone.

6. See that the new member comes to all the meetings and be there also.

7. See that he meets people.

8. Have older members talk to him.

9. Don't sell the club to new members.

10. Don't quote the big names in the group.

11. Uphold other members to the new member.

12. Do not encourage discussion of personalities.

13. Do not make things too easy, such as lending money, etc.

14. Help straighten out new member's financial and domestic problems by pointing out what experience has

shown to be the best way.

15. When drunk goes to another sponsor with tales of persecution, if the second sponsor doesn't talk it over

with the first sponsor, the issue becomes one of

personalities, and the second sponsor will find that the

slipper has outsmarted him.

16. Don't listen to a lot of gossip by slippers.

17. Second sponsor of same member should get in touch with the first sponsor and find out what has been done--

what were the reactions of the slipper--so that he can't

pull the same stuff on the second sponsor.

18. If a new member alibis about coming to classes and the Tuesday night meetings and the group meetings, after a

short while, the sponsor should impress on him the

importance of attendance at these meetings by both the

husband and the wife. If you can't get him to come,

then he has put you in a position where you cannot help

him, as he will not let you. So drop him. The seed has

been planted; redirect your energies elsewhere.

Somewhere along the line he will be back when he

wants A.A.

19. A good sponsor will not have more than two neophytes a year. But he will do a thorough job on those two.

as Minneapolis Sees It

South Palm Beach County Intergroup Assn/District 8 Good afternoon, my name is Pam T., representing SPBC Intergroup in District 8. Our Intergroup is going very well this year. We have many dedicated Trusted Servants committed to our local AA service office. I am privileged to work with friendly and helpful Officers and Committee chair people. All of our committees positions are covered, and we have not had problems finding people willing to volunteer, and actually put in the time and effort needed. We have a whole community of young AA’s stepping up to service positions, with their energy and a willingness to do the footwork. Our new office, with the additional space to offer an exceptional area for our volunteers to serve and our committees to meet, continues to be a testament of the love and support from the groups we serve.

The 24th Anniversary or our Intergroup is in May, and we will have a great “Anniversary Edition” of our Newsletter, the SCAAN. As the Archivist for Intergroup, I have collected many old and precious documents from our beginning. Among these documents is the minutes from the very first business meeting of SPBC Intergroup, which is going to be published in this edition of SCAAN. We are slowly processing and preserving the documents, and have many items on display in the Archives area of our office. Along with the assistance of the Group Information committee, we hope to have our Group History forms updated and new ones completed before our Intergroup Gratitude Dinner in November. Respectfully submitted in love and service, Pam t.
