Powerful Performance. The 3056E DITATAAC engine delivers a net power of113 kW (151 hp) at the rated speed of2000 rpm, and meets U.S. EPA Tier 2emission standards.

Turbocharged and Air-to-AirAftercooled. The turbocharger packsdense air into the cylinders for morecomplete combustion, lower emissionswith improved engine performance andefficiency. The air-to-air aftercoolerreduces smoke and emissions byproviding cooler inlet air for efficientcombustion.

Cooling System. Features anelectronically controlled variable speedon-demand fan. Driven by a hydraulicmotor, fan speed is determined byengine coolant, transmission oil,hydraulic oil and inlet manifoldtemperature. Cooler operating conditionsallow lower average fan speeds resultingin reduced fuel consumption and lowernoise levels. The electronic enginecontrol continuously compensates forthis fan load, providing consistent nethorsepower, regardless of operatingconditions.

Engine Oil. Caterpillar® engine oil isformulated to optimize engine life andperformance and is recommended foruse in Cat diesel engines. The engine oilchange interval has been increased to500 hours.

Low Sound, Low Vibration. The 3056Edesign improves operator comfort byreducing sound and vibration.

Hydraulic Pumps. The closed centerhydraulic system provides peak flowand pressure at any engine speed, foroptimum digging force with preciseimplement controllability. In additionto the main hydraulic pump, a dedicatedhydraulic pumps for swing, cooling fanmotor and pilot systems ensure best inclass performance.

Proportional Auxiliary Hydraulics.Versatility of the hydraulic system canbe expanded to utilize a wide varietyof hydraulic work tools using multiplevalve options.

High Pressure Auxiliary Circuit

• The Multi-function Valve is thecore of the Tool Control System.This system allows an operator toselect up to five pre-programmedwork tools from the monitor. Thesepreset hydraulic parameters supporteither one-way flow or two-way flow.

• The dedicated Hammer FunctionValve is the best option for machinesthat will only require single directionflow and do not require the flexibilityprovided by the Multi-function Valve.

Medium Pressure Function Valve

• The Medium Pressure Function Valveprovides proportional flow that is idealfor tilting buckets or rotating tools.

Stick Regeneration Circuit. The stickregeneration circuit increases efficiencyand controllability for higherproductivity and lower operating costs.

Hydraulic Cylinder Snubbers.The hydraulic cylinder snubbers at rodend of boom cylinders, both ends ofstick cylinders and bucket cylinder rodend cushion shocks, reduce sound andincrease cylinder life.

Caterpillar XT-6™ ES Hoses. To meetthe critical flexibility and strengthdemands of wheel excavator applications,XT-6 ES hoses are installed in the highpressure hydraulic system.

Caterpillar Hydraulic Oil. Maximumprotection in all hydraulic systemsagainst mechanical wear and corrosion.Its high zinc content reduces wear,and extends pump life. Provided certainrequirements are met (e.g. S•O•SSM

analysis every 500 hours), the hydraulicoil change interval is extended from2,000 hours to 4,000 hours.

Interior Operator Station. The operatorstation is quiet with conveniently placedcontrols, low lever and pedal effort,ergonomic seat design and highlyeffective ventilation.

Seat. A new seat with a two-tone colordesign offers adjustable back rest,lumbar support, seat cushion lengthand angle. The optional comfort seatwith air suspension and seat heatingautomatically adjusts to theoperator’s weight.

Consoles. Designed for simplicity andfunctionality. The left side console istiltable for excellent access to the cab.Dozer blade and/or outrigger controlsas well as the radio-off switch arelocated on the left console.

Automatic Climate Control.Fully automatic climate controladjusts temperature and air flow.

Control Convenience. Each control isplaced within easy reach of the operator.Joysticks control the implement functions,steer the machine while in first gearand activate the adjustable hydraulicsensitivity. The soft switch panel controlsthe oscillating axle, power controlsettings, parking brake, automaticengine speed control, and otherhydraulic functions.

Foot Pedals. Two-way pedals for traveland auxiliary circuits give more floorspace and reduce the need to changepositions. The foot pedal for auxiliaryhigh-pressure circuit can now be lockedin the off position and is used as afootrest for greater operator comfort.

Cab Mounts. The cab shell is attached tothe frame with viscous mounts, reducingvibration and sound.

Viewing Area. There is excellent viewingarea through wide windows surroundingthe operator. The lower of the two-piecewindow can be opened separately forbetter air ventilation or be slid into theupper window to completely open thefront bay. Both front window optionsare equipped with a multi-positionsunscreen. An optional one-piecewindow is available.

Skylight. A unique large polycarbonateskylight provides excellent upwardvisibility.

Wipers. The parallel wiper systemis designed to maximize visibility.

Large Storage Compartment. A largestorage space behind the seat withoptional cover, provides sufficientroom for a lunch box.

Easy Access. Conveniently located grabirons and large steps mounted to theundercarriage, together with a tiltablesteering column and tiltable left sideconsole, provide easy access to the cab.

Monitor. The new, compact monitorenhances viewing while displaying avariety of language-based informationthat is easy to read and understand.

– Pre-start system alerts the operator tolow coolant and hydraulic oil levelsprior to starting.

– Filter and oil change warnings aredisplayed when the number of hoursreaches the maintenance interval.

– Tool select function allows theoperator to select a pre-definedhydraulic work tool.

– Adjustable braking characteristicsenables an operator to select three levelsof travel motor retarder aggressivenesswhen releasing the travel pedal.

– 23 different languages are availableon the M318C.

Joystick Steering. Enables an operatorto reposition the machine in the firstgear while simultaneously working withthe implements, keeping both handson the joysticks. The operator is moreproductive using this feature.

Power Control Settings. Three modesallow the operator to choose the optimumengine and hydraulic power setting.

• Economy mode provides the bestfuel efficiency allowing lowerowning and operating costs.

• Power mode is used for normalmachine operation providing peakperformance under any operatingcondition.

• Travel mode automatically engageswhen the travel pedal is depressed.This mode provides maximum speedand drawbar pull when repositioningor moving the machine to a newwork location.

Adjustable Hydraulic Sensitivity.This hydraulic modulation control allowsan operator to adjust the sensitivityof the machine according to the jobrequirements. Four levels of sensitivitycan be selected on the soft touch panel tothe right of the operator. Lower settingsprovide finite control, without sacrificingfull hydraulic power. This feature canbe quickly activated/de-activated usinga trigger on the right joystick.

New Drive Line Concept. The newtravel motor and transmission controlin the drive line provide comfortabletravel due to increased smoothness,improved hydraulic retarding andimproved gear shifting.

Travel Motor. The advanced travelmotor gives higher hydraulic retardingforces especially in downhill roadingby continuously using the optimaldisplacement of the travel motor forretarding. Braking characteristics canbe adjusted to the operator’s preferredlevel of retarding in three steps.

Transmission Control. Provides moreuseable speed, for faster uphill traveland downhill retarding.

Heavy Duty Axles. The front axle offerswide oscillating and steering angles.The transmission is mounted directlyon the rear axle for protection andoptimum ground clearance.

Advanced Disc Brake System. The newdisc brake system works directly on thehub instead of the drive shaft to avoidplanetary gear backlash. This eliminatesthe rocking effect associated withworking free on wheels. The new axleis designed for low maintenance and theoil change intervals have been increasedfrom 1,000 to 2,000 hours furtherreducing owning and operating costs.

Undercarriage Design. A rigid, weldedframe provides excellent durability.Efficient hydraulic lines routing,transmission protection and heavy dutyaxles make the undercarriage perfectfor wheel excavator applications.Both outriggers and dozer blade arepin-on for maximum flexibility.An optional work tool restraint baris available.

Outriggers. The pin-on design allows theoutriggers to be mounted on the frontand/or rear for maximum operatingstability when digging or lifting andare individually controlled for levelingon slopes.

Dozer Blade. The pin-on designallows the dozer blade to be mountedon the front and/or rear and is usedfor leveling, clean-up work and forstabilizing the machine during diggingapplications. The large dozer bottomand parallel design provide minimizedground pressure.

Tool Box. A large sealed and lockabletool box is mounted on the undercarriagebetween the steps on the machine’s leftside. A second optional tool box isavailable for the right side.

Design. Booms and sticks are welded,box section structures with thick,multi-plate fabrications in high stressareas and are built for performanceand long service life.

Flexibility. The choice of two boomsand four sticks provides the rightcombination of reach and diggingforces for all applications.

One-Piece Boom. The one-piece boom(5.35 m/17 ft 7 in) fits best for allstandard applications such as truckloading and digging. The straight sectionreduces stress flow and helps increasethe lifetime of the boom.

Variable Adjustable (VA) Boom.The variable adjustable boom(5.26 m/17 ft 3 in) offers improvedright side visibility and machine roadingbalance. When working in tight quartersor lifting heavy loads, the VA boomoffers the best flexibility. Hammer useis permitted.

Industrial Stick

Sticks. Four different stick lengths areoffered to match different applicationrequirements:

• Short stick (2.2 m/7 ft 3 in) formaximum breakout force andlifting capability.

• Medium stick (2.5 m/8 ft 2 in) forgreater crowd force and lift capacity.

• Long stick (2.8 m/9 ft 2 in) forgreater depth and reach requirements.

• Industrial stick (3.3 m/10 ft 10 in)for use with free swinging grapplesin material handling and industrialapplications.

Buckets. Caterpillar offers nineexcavating buckets and three ditchcleaning buckets.

Available Couplers. There are severalhydraulic couplers available forthe M318C.

• Quick Couplers enable the operatorto simply release one work tooland pick up another. This makesthe excavator highly versatile to suitthe business and application needs.

• Pin Grabber Plus Quick Couplersmultiply the versatility and utilityby allowing them to pick up anduse virtually any work tool equippedwith standard pins. Both manualand hydraulic actuated versions areavailable. The hydraulic circuit isavailable as a retrofit kit dedicated tothis coupler. Buckets can be reversedfor greater flexibility when workingaround and under obstructions.

• The dedicated Pin-Lock is a hookand pin type interface which featuresa locking mechanism to ensure asecure fit. Buckets and tools with thematching interface can be changedin about one minute and requireone pin (manually inserted into thecoupler) to couple tools into place.The Pin-Lock dedicated coupler pinsonto the stick, allowing the machineto pick up new and old stylecompetitive work tools that havePin-Lock style pockets. These toolsinclude buckets, hammers, rippersand augers.

• Tilt-Lock couplers have the samefunctionality as the Pin-Lock coupler,but with the added benefit of thetilting function. This functionalityprecisely positions a work tool basedon the work demands. This is keyfor backfilling, ditch cleaning,grading and sloping operations.

• Dedicated Wedge-Lock couplersare considered the standard whentalking about dedicated couplers onhydraulic excavators. This couplerdesign provides excellent durabilityin the most demanding applications.A range of buckets, hammer/compactor brackets, grapples andother tools are available for thiscoupler style.

Tool Control. The integrated ToolControl system allows for five pre-setcombinations, eliminating the need tore-set the hydraulic parameters eachtime a tool is changed. Individual flowand pressure can be programmed easilyas well as one-way/two-way hydraulicfunctions. Each of the five programmedtools can even be given a specific namevia the monitor.

Work Tools. A variety of work tools areavailable from Caterpillar, includingbuckets, quick couplers, grapples,hammers and many others to meetyour application requirements.

Multi-Processor. The CaterpillarMulti-Processors can be equippedwith different jaw types dependingon your need.

• CC-jaws combi cutter

• CR-jaws concrete cutter

• PP-jaws primary pulverizer

• PS-jaws secondary pulverizer

• TS-jaws tank shear

• S-jaws steel

Multi-Grapple. The Multi-Grapplewith unlimited left and right rotationis the ideal tool for stripping, sorting,handling and loading.

Orange Peel Grapple. Specificallydesigned for handling scrap and rockin recycling and transfer applications.

Clamshell. For applications requiringvertical excavation capability or inmaterial transfer needs, a clamshellprovides an ideal solution. The free-swinging tool increases the workingenvelop of your excavator.

Hammer. With their wide variety oftools, Cat hammers provide the perfectmatch for maximum life, efficiencyand productivity.

Easy Access. Gull-wing doors, withpneumatically-assisted lift cylinders,effortlessly lift up for exceptional accessto the engine and all service points.An additional toolbox located under thestep leading to the upper platform offersclean, dry storage for the operator.

Ground Level Service. The fuel/waterseparator, engine oil filter, battery,radiator fluid level, fuel filter, engineoil gauge, hydraulic oil level andair cleaner are all easily accessibleat ground level allowing criticalmaintenance to be performed quicklyand efficiently.

Easy to Clean Coolers. Flat fins on allcoolers reduce clogging and make iteasier to remove debris.

Swing-Up AC Condenser. Without usingtools, the AC condenser swings upvertically to allow cleaning on bothsides as well as clear access to theoil cooler.

Front Compartment. The right frontservice compartment tilts providingground level access to the batteries,ATAAC, AC condenser and the air filter.

Air Filter. Caterpillar Radial Seal airfilters eliminate the use of service tools,reducing maintenance time. The air filterfeatures a double-element constructionand built-in precleaner for superiorcleaning efficiency. When the air cleanerplugs, a warning is displayed on themonitor screen inside the cab.

Capsule Filter. The hydraulic returnfilter, a capsule filter, is situated insidethe hydraulic tank. This filter preventscontaminants from entering the systemwhen the hydraulic oil is changed.

Engine Inspection. The engine can beaccessed from both ground level and theupper structure. The longitudinal layoutensures that all daily inspection itemscan be accessed from ground level.The engine and pump compartmentare separated by a steel wall.

Remote Greasing Block. A greasingblock located in the engine compartmentwith two grease points for the swingbearing and one for the front endattachment delivers grease to hardto reach locations. For the lowerundercarriage, two remote blocks giveeasy access for greasing to the oscillatingaxle and, as an option, the dozer blade.

Water Separator. The water separatorremoves water from fuel even whenunder pressure. For ease of service,the water separator is in the enginecompartment.

Fuel Tank Drain. Located at the bottomof the upper frame, the fuel tank drainwith hose connection allows simple,spill free fluid draining.

Hydraulic Tank Drain. Located in theengine compartment, the hydraulictank drain with hose connection enablessimple, spill free fluid changes.

Handrails and Steps. Large handrailsand steps assist the operator in climbingon and off the machine.

Anti-Skid “Punched-Star” Plate.Anti-skid punched-star plate covers thetop of the steps and upper structure tohelp prevent slipping during maintenance.

Extended Service Intervals.M318C service and maintenanceintervals have been extended to reducemachine service time, increase machineavailability and reduce operating costs.Using Scheduled Oil Sampling analysis(S•O•SSM), hydraulic oil change intervalscan be extended from 2,000 hours to4,000 hours. Engine coolant changeintervals are 12,000 hours with CatExtended Life Coolant/Anti-freeze.

Scheduled Oil Sampling. Caterpillarhas specially developed (S•O•SSM) OilSampling Analysis to help ensure betterperformance, longer life and increasedcustomer satisfaction. It is a thoroughand reliable early warning system whichdetects traces of metals, dirt and othercontaminants in your engine, axle andhydraulic oil. It can predict potentialtrouble early avoiding costly failures.Your Caterpillar dealer can give youresults and specific recommendationsshortly after receiving your sample.

Electronic Technician. The electronicengine and machine controllers providedetailed diagnostic capability for servicetechnicians. The ability to store activeand intermittent indicators simplifiesproblem diagnosis and reduces totalrepair time, resulting in improvedmachine availability and loweroperating cost.

Caterpillar Product Link System.The Product Link system includesa transceiver module (on-board themachine), office application PC softwareand a satellite communications networkto track machine hours, location andwarnings. Product Link simplifiesmaintenance scheduling, fleetmanagement and product problemevent tracking and diagnosis. (PL-321)

Low Exhaust Emissions. The Cat 3056Eused in the M318C is a low emissionengine designed to meet US EPAnon-road Tier 2 emission regulations.

Quiet Operation. The noise level insidethe cab and as well the outside spectatorsound are extremely low.

Automatic Engine Control. AutomaticEngine Control (AEC) reduces enginerpm if no operation is performed,maximizing fuel efficiency and reducingsound levels.

Ozone Protection. To help protect theearth’s ozone layer, the air conditioningunit uses only R-134a refrigerantwhich does not contain harmfulchlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s).

Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil.The biodegradable hydraulic oil(HEES™) is formulated to provideexcellent high-pressure and high-temperature characteristics and isfully compatible with the all hydrauliccomponents. HEES is fully decomposedby soil or water microorganisms,providing a more environmentally-sound alternative to mineral-based oils.This is available as an option.

Fewer Leaks and Spills. Lubricantfillers and drains are designed tominimize spills.

Longer Service Intervals. Working closewith your Caterpillar Dealer can helpextend service intervals for engineoil, hydraulic oil, axle oil, and coolantmeaning less required fluids. This meansless disposal, all adding up to loweroperating costs.
