EngineThe twelve-cylinder, turbocharged and aftercooled engine is built for power, reliability, economy and with the HEUI fuel system, meets all worldwide emission standards.

The Cat 3412E Diesel Engine is a four-stroke design and uses long, effectivepower strokes for more complete fuelcombustion and optimum efficiency. The 3412E is designed with highdisplacement and a low speed rating forlong hours of service betweenscheduled overhauls and loweroperating costs.

The 19 percent torque rise provideshigh lugging force during accelerationand less down-shifting on grade or inrough underfoot conditions. The torquerise effectively matches thetransmission shift points to providemaximum efficiency and faster cycletimes.

The Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector(HEUI) is a proven high-pressure, directinjection fuel system. This systemelectronically monitors operator andmachine inputs to optimize engineperformance. HEUI is unique in itsability to independently controlinjection pressure over the entire engineoperating range. This allows completecontrol over injection timing, duration, rate and pressure for maximumperformance and efficiency.

■ HEUI fuel system rate shapingtechnology modifies the heat releasecharacteristics of the combustionprocess for significant decreases insound and emission levels.

■ Reduces specific fuel consumptionby up to 5 percent.

■ Exhaust smoke is significantlyreduced (by as much as 75 percent)through precise, electronic control offueling limits and injection timing.

■ Improved reliability and durabilitythrough elimination of the governor, reduction in mechanical linkages andincorporation of electronic protectionstrategies.

2 Electronic Control Module (ECM)monitors key functions and logscritical indicators. The ElectronicTechnician can access thisdiagnostic information for easiermaintenance and repair.

Power TrainThe Caterpillar power train gets the job done smoothly and quickly.

The Cat seven-speed power shifttransmission, matched with the direct-injection Cat 3412E Diesel Engine, provides constant power over a widerange of operating speeds.

1 The lock-up torque convertercombines the maximum rimpull andcushioned shifting of torqueconverter drive with the efficiencyand performance of direct drive.

■ It engages at approximately 6.9 km/h (4.3 mph), deliveringmore power to the wheels.

■ The lock-up clutch will quicklyrelease and re-engage duringshifts, maintaining power wind-up, improving transmission lifeand increasing operator comfort.

2 The seven-speed, planetary powershift transmission utilizes amodulating pressure valve toregulate clutch pressure rise and fallto ease clutch engagement. Thisreduces shock loads on power traincomponents.

■ Large diameter clutches androbust planetary gears andbearings.

■ Patented rotating clutch pressureseals minimize drag losses andimprove reliability.

■ 35 percent gear splits between allgears match Cat engine designfor optimum use of engine powerwith minimized shifting andtorque converter use.

3 Final drive and differential torquemultiplication of 17.48:1 furtherreduces stress on the drive train.

4 Transmission and torque convertershare a common sump. Thecombined sump offers an easilyaccessible fill tube and site gauges.

Full floating axles are shot peened torelieve internal stresses and increasedurability. Rolled splines also provideincreased service life.

Cast rear wheels and Cat center-mountrims are mounted using studs and nutsto minimize maintenance and maximizedurability.

Transmission Chassis Controller (TCC)uses electronically transferred enginerpm data to execute shifts at presetpoints for optimum performance andefficiency. This integration allows:

■ Programmable top gear limit.

■ Control throttle shifting.

■ Directional shift management.

■ Neutral coast inhibitor.

■ Economy shift mode.

Caterpillar’s power train integrationprovides increased component life andoperator comfort.

Caterpillar’s exclusive electronicintegration optimizes overall powertrain performance, reliability andcomponent life for reduced power trainoperating cost.

The CAT Data Link electronicallyintegrates the machine’s computersystems, which allows communicationsand provides the following benefits:

■ Controlled throttle shifting. Enginerpm is regulated during a shift toreduce driveline stress for smoothershifts and extended component life.

■ Economy shift mode modifies enginemaps, resulting in improved fuelconsumption.

■ Directional shift managementregulates engine speed duringdirectional shifts to prevent damagecaused by high speed directionalchanges.

■ Elevated idle neutral coast inhibitor helps prevent shifting toneutral at speeds above 6.5 km/h (4 mph).

■ Body-up shift inhibitor helps preventthe transmission from shifting abovea pre-programmed gear without thebody fully lowered.

■ Event memory records machinemanagement data that can beaccessed using the ElectronicTechnician. Recorded informationincludes:

- Shift histograms.

- Operator-induced events.

- Lock-up clutch counter.

- Machine overspeed.

- Transmission overspeed.

Electronic Technician (ET) enhancesdiagnostics/serviceability. Theelectronic engine and transmissioncontrols provide exhaustive diagnosticcapability for service technicians. Theability to store both active andintermittent indicators will simplifyproblem diagnosis and total repair time, resulting in improved mechanicalavailability and lower operating cost.

■ ET accesses data stored in the engineand transmission controls via theCAT Data Link System.

■ ET displays the status of all engineparameters including: throttleposition, timing, and fuel flow.

■ ET replaces 13 mechanical tools toperform functions like cylinder cut-out checks, injector solenoid testsand timing calibration.

Caterpillar Electronic MonitoringSystem (CEMS) allows the operator toview requested information and utilizesa three-category warning system toalert the operator to abnormal machineconditions.

Caterpillar offers optional attachmentsthat integrate with the CAT Data LinkSystem:

■ Automatic Retarder Control (ARC)works with other electroniccomponents to automatically controlretarding on grade, maintainingapproximately 2,230 rpm.

Page 8: Specalog for 775D Quarry Truck AEHQ5139-02

Oil-cooled Rear Disc BrakesReliable braking lets the operator concentrate on the haul road.

The Cat retarding system has anintermittent rating of 1119 kW (1,500hp) and a continuous rating of 526 kW (705 hp).

■ When retarding, the engine runsagainst compression on downhillhauls, resulting in minimal fuel burn.

■ Retarding forces and heat areabsorbed through the oil. Theretarding system generates lowerdrive line stresses than drive lineretarding systems.

Caterpillar forced oil-cooled, multipledisc brakes are continuously cooled forexceptional, fade-resistant braking andretarding. The optional ARC and TCSutilize the oil-cooled rear brakes toenhance truck performance and increaseproductivity.

Oil-cooled disc brakes are designedand built for reliable, adjustment-freeoperation providing superiorperformance and service life incomparison to shoe-type and dry-discsystems.

An oil film prevents direct contactbetween the discs. Absorbing thebraking forces by shearing oil andcarrying heat away, this design extendsbrake life.

A Caterpillar patented, two-pistondesign combines the service, secondary, parking brake, and retarding functions.

■ The primary piston hydraulicallyactuates both service and retardingfunctions.

■ The secondary piston is spring-applied and is held in the disengagedposition by hydraulic pressure.

■ If hydraulic system pressure dropsbelow a certain level, the spring-applied secondary pistonautomatically applies the brakes.

Automatic Retarder Control (ARC) (Optional)Electronically controls braking on grades for improved engine and brake component life.

Traction Control System (TCS) (Optional)Electronically controls wheel slippage for improved performance.

The Automatic Retarder Control (ARC)electronically controls braking on gradeto maintain approximately 2,230 enginerpm (engine rpm is adjustable from2,160-2,300 rpm in increments of 10rpm). ARC is deactivated when theoperator applies the brakes or thethrottle.

Engine overspeed protection. With theaccelerator depressed and/or ARCturned off, ARC will automaticallyactivate at 2,475 rpm to help avoidpotentially destructive and often costlyengine overspeeds.

ARC results in:

■ Increased operating efficiency withfaster downhill speeds. Bymaintaining consistently higherengine speeds, average truck speedwill be higher than a manuallycontrolled truck.

■ Excellent controllability and reducedoperator effort. Automatic brakemodulation provides a smoother rideover manual modulation, allowing theoperator to focus more on truckoperation down the haul road.

■ Improved component life, optimizedsystem cooling capability, andreduced torque fluctuations resultfrom the precision of ARC.

■ Faster troubleshooting and diagnosiswith self-diagnostic capability and theability to communicate with ETthrough the CAT Data Link System.

■ Operator awareness throughelectronic integration and the CEMS,alerting the operator to overspeedconditions and critical machinefunctions.

Monitors wheel slip. If wheel slipexceeds the set limit, the oil-cooled discbrakes are automatically applied to slowthe spinning wheel.

Provides operator awareness throughan on-dash indicator, signifying TCS isengaged.

Utilizes normal differential action toprovide superior maneuvering in poorunderfoot conditions.

■ Reduces tire scuffing as compared topositive lock differentials used onother systems.

Totalresistance equals actual percent gradeplus 1% for each 10 kg/metric ton(20 lb./U.S. ton)of rolling resistance. From this weight-resistance point, readhorizontally to the curve with thehighest obtainable gear, then down tomaximum speed. Usable rimpull willdepend upon traction available andweight on drive wheels.

To determine retarding performance: Add lengths of alldownhill segments and, using this total, refer to properretarding chart. Read from gross weight down to the percenteffective grade. Effective grade equals actual % grade minus1% for each 10 kg/metric ton (20 lb./U.S. ton)of rollingresistance. From this weight-effective grade point, readhorizontally to the curve with the highest obtainable gear, thendown to maximum descent speed brakes can properly handle

without exceeding cooling capacity. The following charts arebased on these conditions: 32° C (90° F) ambienttemperature, at sea level, with 24.00-R35 tires and a properlymaintained cooling system.

NOTE: Select the proper gear to maintain engine rpm at thehighest possible level, without overspeeding the engine. Ifcooling oil overheats, reduce ground speed to allowtransmission to shift to the next lower speed range.
