Cat® C18 Engine with ACERT™Technology. Caterpillar optimizes engineperformance while meeting U.S. EPATier 3 and European Union Stage IIIaengine emission regulations. ACERT™Technology reduces emissions during thecombustion process by using advancedtechnology in the air and fuel systems, inconjunction with integrated electronics.Caterpillar meets emission regulationsat the combustion source, rather thanrecycling exhaust gases.

Block. The C18 block incorporates a one-piece, grey iron block, featuring generousribbing for stiffness and heavy bearingbulkheads for rigidity and strength.

Caterpillar also has moved away frompipe thread ports to straight-thread, o-ring connection points, reducing thepotential for leaks. This new designsupports the engine’s higher compressionratios and increased power density.

Cylinder Head. The new cross flow airdesign routes air straight across the headremoving bends and turns that createresistance to flow. By removing theresistance to flow, parasitic loads arereduced as pumping needs are lessened. The cylinder head is a one piece, castiron component with a newly designedgraphite and steel composite head gasketthat seals the combustion chamber withbetter rigidity and wear capability.

Overhead Cam. A single overheadcam is driven by gears on the front ofthe engine, which significantly reducenoise and vibration. Caterpillar also hasadded two pendulum absorbers, mountedat the front of the camshafts to furtherreduce noise and vibration.

Pistons, Connecting Rods, Cylinder Liners.New design and material improvementsto the pistons, rods and liners have beenmade to support the higher cylinderpressures and the 16.3:1 compressionratios associated with ACERTTechnology, while still providingdurability to engine overhaul.

A single-piece steel piston, pulsator-testedto 25 560 kPa (4,000 psi), is matched toa robust connecting rod to ensure longcomponent life. The piston’s steel skirtincreases its durability and results inreduced thermal expansion, allowinga tighter piston fit and reduced linervibration. The overall piston surfacearea reduces friction and enhancesfuel economy.

The newly designed connecting rodallows better lubrication and coolingand is more securely fastened to thecrankshaft using two additional bolts. The new improved rod bearings are madeof steel-backed copper alloy with leadtin overlay. This new metallurgy reducesflaking and offers better fatigue strength.

Cylinder liners are wet liners made ofcompacted graphite and iron for excellentwear and strength characteristics. Also, the tolerances between the pistonsand the wet cylinder liners have beentightened to unprecedented levels forreduced blow-by and higher efficiency.

Turbochargers. The single, waste-gatedturbocharger found on the C18 engine iswater-cooled to accommodate suddenhot machine shutdowns. Water cools thebearings during this event, preventingbearing seizure. The C18 engine alsoincludes a new turbine housing and anadditional spacer bearing. The additionof a spacer bearing eliminates snap ringsand, therefore, reduces complexity andimproves shaft motion.

The turbocharger for the 772 features atitanium compression wheel. The titaniumcompression wheel is used to withstandthe higher compression wheel speeds thatare required, especially in high altitudeapplications. The titanium wheel canwithstand these high-spin conditionswith much better wear characteristics.

Changes enable the C18 to deliverlonger life and lower maintenance costs, and contribute to good fuel economy. The design also provides high horsepowerwith improved response time whilekeeping exhaust temperatures low forlong hours of continuous operation. The waste-gate turbocharger designimproves engine response and peaktorque, while providing higher boostover a wider range.

MEUI Fuel System. The Cat MEUIfuel system combines the technicaladvancement of electronic control withthe simplicity of direct mechanicallycontrolled unit fuel injection. This systemelectronically controls injection pressureby sensing the engine speed and loadconditions over the entire engineoperating speed range.

A low-pressure fuel transfer pumpprovides fuel to the injectors, whichthen increases the pressure to deliververy fine, atomized fuel particles intothe combustion chamber with precisetiming and duration. The result is amore complete fuel burn with loweremissions and better engine response.

Oil Coolers. The 772 is equipped withthree oil coolers: an engine-mountedengine oil cooler, an engine-mountedtransmission/torque converter oil cooler, and a remote-mounted, brake, hoist andhydraulic fan oil cooler. These coolersallow major components to expel heat, maintaining optimal operatingtemperatures.

Fuel Filters. The C18 engine is equippedwith two fuel filters. The primary filter isengine-mounted and features oil/waterseparation and an electric priming pump. The electric pump provides easier primingand better contamination control than amanual unit. The secondary fuel filter isalso engine-mounted, and has a switchthat monitors pressure changes andprovides pressure drop warnings tothe operator.

Advanced Diesel Engine ManagementA4 Engine Controller. The ADEM™ A4electronic control module providesflexible fuel mapping, allowing theengine to respond quickly to varyingapplication needs.

Next Generation Modular Radiator(NGMR). The new modular coolingsystem with a single-pass flow coredesign uses brazed construction forstronger joints, better leak preventionand higher heat transfer. The simplerdesign of the single-pass system, whichreplaces the two-pass flow folded coresystem enables coolant to enter one endof the core and flow out the oppositeend for more efficient ambient coolingcapability and greater durability.

Hydraulic Demand Fan and AccessoryDrive. The 772 includes a standard,variable-speed, on-demand fan. This fanprovides cooling airflow only whennecessary, resulting in reduced parasiticlosses, a reduction of fuel consumptionand fan-generated noise.

The C18 engine includes a Poly-Vaccessory drive belt with an auto-tensioner, which is self adjusting.

Transmission. Pairing the Caterpillarseven-speed planetary power shifttransmission with the C18 diesel enginewith ACERT Technology deliversconstant power over a wide rangeof operating speeds.

• Transmission Chassis Control (TCC).Transmission shifting is based onTransmission Output Speed for optimumperformance efficiency and clutch life. The TCC provides integratedfunctionality to controlled throttleshifting, directional shift management, neutral coast inhibitor, body-up shiftlimiter and body-up reverse neutralizer.

Throttle Lock. The operator can nowelectronically lock the throttle pedal atfull throttle, to reduce fatigue on longuphill hauls. The throttle can be lockedon by momentarily depressing the throttlelock switch located on the operatorconsole, while depressing the pedalfully. The throttle is released wheneverbraking is applied or the throttle is againdepressed.

Lock-Up Torque Converter.Combines maximum rimpull andcushioned shifting of torque converterdrive with the efficiency and performanceof direct drive. The torque converterincludes an additional clutch plate tomaintain power train capability forhigher horsepower and top speed, aswell as a new torque converter adapterthat provides extra length to house theadditional clutch plate and enables theconverter components to be changedwithout having to change the housing. The lock-up torque converter engagesat approximately 8 km/h (5 mph),delivering more power to the wheels.

Lock-Up Clutch. Quickly releases andre-engages to reduce power train torqueloads for smoother shifting, long lifeand a more comfortable ride.

New Differential and Proven FinalDrives. The new Cat differential workswith the proven final drives as a systemto deliver maximum power to the ground. For improved serviceability, the piniongear is cantilever mounted, which allowsinspection of the differential withoutpulling the rear-end. Visual inspectionof the pinion gear and bearings can beperformed in 1-2 hours versus 8 hourson the previous models. In addition, the differential bevel pinion gear setis designed for improved adjustability, which results in improved contact patternsand life. The differential gear set alsoprovides enhanced bending life forsteeper grade applications.

New Differential Center Housing. A new, ductile iron center housing improvesquality and reliability. The improvedstiffness allows for better main supportbearing life. The new housing also usesbolts, reducing maintenance time. This change also improves wheelstation bolted-joint life.

• The 772 features a drop tube/castingdesign and two forged steel mountingsfor hoist cylinders, similar to thedesign as found on the 775.

• A volcano casting that holds the centertube is enhanced with thicker walldimensions for increased durability.

• New strut-mount castings have beenmoved 254 mm (10 in) forward and25.4 mm (1 in) outward on each side. These thicker strut-mount castingsand their location improve ridecharacteristics as well as durability.

• New steering casting (same as 775)accommodates larger steeringcylinders and ball studs.

• New tail casting accommodates newangled rail design.

Superior Weld Quality. Structural framewelds are J-groove type, ensuring fullweld penetration for strength andlongevity. During fabrication, weldintegrity is further enhanced by rotatingthe frames 360 degrees to provideoptimal, flat welding surfaces.

Technology Enhanced.Caterpillar structures are tested usingSystem Structural Analysis (SSA) todynamically simulate operations in fieldenvironments and identify potentialstructural improvements in high stressareas. With analysis of machine structuresand variables, such as haul road andpayload, structural improvements weremade to the frame to accommodate thenew cab, platform, engine and radiator.

Quality Control. A Coordinate MeasuringMachine (CMM) is used to inspecttruck frames for consistency in themanufacturing process. In addition allcritical welds receive testing to verifyweld penetration which results in framedurability.

Full Hydraulic Service Brake. The 772features a full hydraulic brake system, which offers significant improvementsin reliability, response, control andserviceability versus an air-overhydraulic system. There are fewercomponents (part by part comparison),boosting reliability and streamliningmaintenance.

Hydraulic Accumulators. The brakesystem is equipped with a primaryaccumulator and a secondaryaccumulator, which also provides back-up braking in the event of a failure. The accumulators automatically drainpressure after shutdown, reducing theservice time by removing the need todrain the pressure off the system andreducing the risk of high-pressureexposure during maintenance.

The new brake system uses a pump thatis driven off the flywheel 100 percentof the time and is only loaded whenhydraulic pressure falls below 11 024 kPa(1,600 psi). The pump will cut out at13 608 kPa (1,975 psi). In the new system, oil in this circuit is also sent to thehydraulic fan system. Any additionaloil is sent to the brake cooling systemalong with the oil used in the drive fan.

Improved Reliability. Because oil is nowused to actuate the brakes, Caterpillar haseliminated the need for two brake mastercylinders, two relay valves, an air dryerand the retarder valve (found on ARCtrucks only) that were associated withthe air-over-hydraulic brake system. The air system had complexity, whichaffected its reliability. The oil actuatedsystem is simpler and more reliable.

Oil-Cooled Multiple Disc Brakes. Cat dryfront and rear oil-cooled, multiple discbrakes are now hydraulically controlled, reducing maintenance costs.

The 772 brakes provide exceptional,fade-resistant braking and retarding formaximum performance and productivityin all haul-road conditions.

Extended Life Multiple Disc Brakes(Optional). Extended life friction materialhas double the wear life of standardbrakes and is twice as resistant toglazing for more consistent brakingpower with less noise.

Brake Design. Cat rear oil-cooled discbrakes are designed with large discs andplates for reliable, adjustment-freeoperation and performance. Rear brakesare completely enclosed and sealed toprevent contamination and reducemaintenance.

Long Life. An oil film prevents directcontact between the discs. This designabsorbs the braking forces by shearingthe oil molecules and carrying heataway to extend brake life.

12

Reliable braking with superior control gives the operator the confidence to focus on productivity.

Brake System

Page 13: Specalog for 772 Off-Highway Truck, AEHQ5724-03

Pistons. The Caterpillar two-piece pistondesign combines the service, secondary, parking brake and retarding functions inthe same system. The primary pistonhydraulically actuates both serviceand retarding functions. The secondarypiston is spring-applied and held inthe disengaged position by hydraulicpressure. If hydraulic system pressuredrops below a specified level, thespring-applied secondary pistonautomatically applies the brakes.

Parking Brake. The 772 parking brakefunction is provided by the spring-appliedfunction in each of the rear oil-cooleddisc brakes. The 772 parking brake iscapable of holding the machine with arated load on grades up to 15 percent.

Automatic Retarder Control (ARC).Standard ARC electronically controlsbraking on grade to maintain engine atapproximately 2,200 rpm (adjustable from1,950 to 2,200 rpm in increments of 10).ARC is deactivated when the operatorapplies the brakes or throttle.

• Faster Speeds. ARC allows the operatorto maintain optimum engine speeds forup to 15 percent faster downhill haulsand greater productivity.

• Superior Control. Automatic brakemodulation offers a smoother ride andbetter control in slippery conditions, allowing the operator to concentrateon driving.

• Ease of Operation. ARC increasesoperating ease, resulting in greateroperator confidence with less fatigue.

• Engine Overspeed Protection.Automatically activates ARC whenengine speed exceeds factory presetlevels, regardless of operator inputs,to avoid potentially damaging engineoverspeeds.

Traction Control System (TCS) (Optional).Electronically monitors and controls rearwheel slippage for greater traction andenhanced truck performance in poorunderfoot conditions. If slippage exceedsa set limit, the oil-cooled disc brakesengage to slow the spinning wheel.Torque is then automatically transferredto the wheel with better traction.

Compression Brake (Optional). OptionalCompression Brake is integrated withAutomatic Retarder Control (ARC)to provide up to 35 percent higherdownhill travel speed and reduce wearon brake components.

Increased Body Capacities. The 772body capacity at 31.3 m3 (41.0 yd3) hasincreased 14% over the 771D at 27.5 m3

(36.0 yd3). Payloads are based on 1660 kgper LCM (2,800 lb per LCY) material.

Electronic Hoist Control. Provides theoperator with better control of the loadwhen dumping, including over-centerload control and modulated controlthroughout the operating range. The automatic body snubbing featurereduces impact on the frame, hoistcylinders and operator.

1) Dual Slope Body 2) Flat Floor Body

Body Design. The new dual slope andflat floor body systems will continue touse fully fabricated, mild steel structures, offering a strong, yet weldable underbodystructure. All interior, steel body surfacesthat come in contact with material arefabricated from 400 BHN steel to providesuperior wear characteristics andresistance to impact. Wide box-sectionribs provide excellent durability andimpact support in the floor, front-wall,sidewall, and top rail areas. Full-lengthstringer rails enhance strength andrigidity throughout the body. Other newfeatures that further enhance durabilityof the understructure include:

• Sidewall ribs are integrated into thefloor ribs, forming a belt to provideincreased strength in the sidewalls.

• Underbody ribs are increased fromseven to nine, enhancing theunderbody structural support.

• Front wall body rest supports areintegrated into the front wallstructure for enhanced durability.

• Full-length, single-piece stringer railsare used, improving the structuralsupport in the body, especiallyin the body pivot support area.

• Front wall is 400 BHN and thethickness is increased from 10.2 mm(0.4 in) to 16.0 mm (0.63 in),eliminating the need for additionalliners for impact resistance in mostapplications.

Application Specific Body Systems. With the introduction of the nextgeneration of trucks, Caterpillar will buildon the previous strengths and providedifferentiation through six different bodysystems. Both dual slope and flat floorbodies will be available in the followingconfigurations:

• Low Impact, Steel Body System

• Medium Impact, Steel Body System

• High Impact, Steel Body System

• Heavy Duty Impact, Steel BodySystem

• High Impact, Rubber Body System

• Heavy Duty High Impact, RubberBody System

• For low abrasion limestone quarryapplications, Caterpillar offers aone-piece quarry steel body systemwith a 25 mm (0.98 in) steel floor.

Steel-Lined Body System. The traditionalsteel-lined system is well understood byusers worldwide. In the new 772 steelbody system, the unique design allowsthe floor and liner to work together toprovide the impact and wear resistance. The Medium Impact, Steel Body Systemoffers an optimum combination of wearand impact resistance, while maximizingperformance. If the application dictateshigher impact or wear needs, the HighImpact, Steel Body System or the HeavyDuty, High Impact, Steel Body Systemprovides more impact and wearresistance, but at an increase in bodyweight versus the Medium Impact,Steel Body System.

Truck Body Systems

Page 17: Specalog for 772 Off-Highway Truck, AEHQ5724-03

Rubber-Lined Body System. A newoffering available from the factory is therubber-lined body system. For impactresistance in hard-rock applications, rubber liners offer a practical, durableand cost-effective solution. They dissipateimpact energy, maximizing body lifeand reduce noise, improving job sitework conditions inside and outside thecab. These maintenance-free liners alsorequire minimal installation time.

The density of rubber is 20 percent ofthe density of steel, yet its ability toabsorb impact is three times that ofsteel. This gives rubber a high impactstrength-to-weight ratio. In addition, truck operators enjoy a better operatorenvironment, without the hard impactsfelt during loading.

Body System Selection. Two primaryfactors affect body selection:

• Impact. Impact is the energy that iscreated by the material when it hits thetruck body. The condition and size ofmaterial, combined with the height atwhich it is dropped, greatly determinesthe impact energy that the body mustabsorb. The most measurable effect ofimpact is structural bending, chipping, cracking, and spalling. These conditionscan be created when the impact absorptioncapability is exceeded by the impact ofthe material itself. Generally speaking, ahigh impact material might be basalt orgranite. A medium impact materialmight be mixture of decomposed rock(75 percent rock, 25 percent dirt), whilea low impact material might simply bedry, packed dirt.

• Abrasion or Wear. The tendency of amaterial to grind away the surface of abody by means of friction is abrasion.Abrasion occurs when a material’shardness is higher than the wear surfacethat it slides on. A high abrasion materialcould be any rock material containing ahigh proportion of hard, angular mineralssuch as quartz. Granite tends to be highlyabrasive. A moderate abrasion materialmight contain a high proportion ofminerals such as calcite. Limestone ismost likely in the moderately abrasivecategory. A low abrasion material couldbe any material that contains mineralssuch as talc.

Exhaust Routing. There are three exhaustrouting systems available for the 772,depending on the customer’s requirementsfor body heat and sound:

• Full-Time Body Routing. The standarddesign provides full-time routing ofexhaust into the body to heat areas wherematerial gathers. This plays a crucial rolein preventing material from being retainedin the body during dumping. Not for usewith rubber liner body systems.

• Full-Time Muffler Routing. The secondoption is the full-time routing of exhaustthrough a muffler, which eliminatesexhaust in the body. This option shouldbe used for rubber-lined bodies orapplications that do not requirebody heat.

• Diverter Box Routing. The finaloption provides a diverter box so thatthe customer has the flexibility tochoose whether to route the exhaustthrough the body or directly throughthe muffler. Not for use with rubberliner body systems.

Target Payload Strategy. Your Cat dealercan help you manage to target payloadto maximize equipment use, ensure safeoperation, increase productivity andlower cost-per-ton.

• Underloading increases costs dueto lost payloads, underutilizesequipment, and increases cost-per-ton.

• Overloading causes excessive wear onvehicle components, such as brakes, tires and drive train, reducingcomponent life and increasingmaintenance costs and repairs.

Matched Systems. Designed to work asan optimum pass/match system, the 772is best sized to match the 988H WheelLoader, with a 4 pass/match, the 990HWheel Loader with 3 pass/match, andthe 385C Hydraulic Excavator with a6 pass/match.

To determine gradeability performance: Read from grossweight down to the percent of total resistance. Total resistanceequals actual percent grade plus 1% for each 10 kg/t (20 lb/ton)of rolling resistance. From this weight-resistance point, read

horizontally to the curve with the highest obtainable gear, thendown to maximum speed. Usable rimpull will depend upontraction available and weight on drive wheels.

To determine retarding performance: Add lengths of alldownhill segments and, using this total, refer to properretarding chart. Read from gross weight down to the percenteffective grade. Effective grade equals actual % grade minus1% for each 10 kg/t (20 lb/ton) of rolling resistance. From thisweight-effective grade point, read horizontally to the curvewith the highest obtainable gear, then down to maximumdescent speed brakes can properly handle without exceeding

cooling capacity. The following charts are based on theseconditions: 32° C (90° F) ambient temperature, at sea level, with 21.00 R33 tires.

NOTE: Select the proper gear to maintain engine rpm at the highestpossible level, without overspeeding the engine. If cooling oiloverheats, reduce ground speed to allow transmission to shift tothe next lower speed range.
