ACERT Technology. The Cat C15 ACERTengine introduces a series of evolutionary, incremental improvements that providebreakthrough engine technology builton systems and components developedby Caterpillar with proven reliability. The technology capitalizes on Catexpertise in four core engine systems:fuel, air, electronics and after treatment.ACERT technology is a unique andrevolutionary systems solution thatenables Cat engines to meet today’sclean air regulations, thus establishingthe building blocks for attainingtomorrow’s more stringent standards.

C15 Block. The one-piece, gray ironblock features generous ribbing forstiffness and heavy bearing bulkheadsfor rigidity and strength as the crankshaftturns. Straight O-ring connection pointsreduce the loss of engine oil and fluids.

Cylinder Head and Piston Technology. The C15 ACERT engine has a cross-flow cylinder head with refined portgeometry, which improves breathingand provides better combustion. The Monotherm/steel pistons have aforged steel design, which offers highstrength, light weight and tightertolerances. The result is better oilcontrol, minimal blow-by and longliner life.

Advanced Diesel Engine Management(ADEM) A4 Engine Controller. The ADEM A4 electronic controlmodule manages fuel delivery to getthe best performance per liter or gallonof fuel used. The engine managementsystem provides flexible fuel mapping, allowing the engine to respond quicklyto varying application needs. It tracksengine and machine conditions whilekeeping the engine operating at peakefficiency.

Fuel Delivery. Multiple injectionfuel delivery involves a high degreeof precision. Precisely shaping thecombustion cycle lowers combustionchamber temperatures, generatingfewer emissions and optimizing fuelcombustion. This translates into morework output for your fuel cost.

Noise Reduction Technologies.Noise reduction has been achievedthrough design changes to the isolatedtop cover, oil pan, multiple injectionstrategy, insulated timing case cover, sculpted crankcase and gear trainrefinements.

Mechanically Actuated ElectronicUnit Injection (MEUI). A highly evolvedfuel system with a proven record ofreliability in the field. It combines thetechnical advancement of an electroniccontrol system with the simplicityof direct mechanically controlled unitfuel injection. It excels in its abilityto control injection pressure over theentire engine operating speed range. These features allow the C15 to havecomplete control over injection timing, duration and pressure.

Air-to-Air Aftercooling (ATAAC).ATAAC keeps air intake temperaturesdown and, in concert with the tighttolerance combustion chambercomponents, maximizes fuel efficiencyand minimizes emissions. Significantimprovements in airflow are generatedby a turbocharger, unique cross-flowhead and a single overhead camshaft.

Wastegate Turbocharging. Singlewastegate turbocharger provides higherboost over a wide range, outstandinglow-end performance with improvedpeak torque and engine response.

Electronic Transmission. The Caterpillarseven-speed electronically controlledtransmission is designed specifically forthe articulated truck and its applications. It features anti-hunt shift strategy forspeed continuity. It also incorporatesIndividual Clutch Modulation (ICM)to ensure constant shift times evenwhen the oil is cold.

Two Reverse Gears. The transmissionarrangement provides a second reversegear for improved performance whenoperating in longer rear haulingapplications. First gear reverse is nowof a lower ratio for increased rimpullon wet or steep grades.

Controlled Throttle Shifting (CTS).Significantly reduces power train stressand clutch wear by controlling enginespeed, torque converter lock-up andtransmission clutch engagements.

Engine Overspeed Inhibitor. ElectronicTransmission Control (ETC) protectsagainst engine overspeeding by shiftingthe transmission up one gear at specifiedrpm settings. If the transmission is in itshighest gear, torque converter lockupdisengages.

Directional Shift Management.Regulates engine speed during directionalshifts to prevent damage caused byhigh-speed directional changes.

Caterpillar Engine Compression Brake.Provides extra braking effort on downhillgrades. It is an excellent match for theCat C15 ACERT engine, turning it intoa power absorbing air compressor. It hasvery fast response time and producesno additional heat, so it can be usedcontinuously.

Usable Rimpull. Power train componentswork together to offer more usablerimpull at higher speeds on effectivegrades. In first gear, the torque converterovercomes grade resistance by sendingmore torque to the wheels and preventingengine lugging. On downhill grades, theengine compression brake effectivelyslows the machine.

Hydraulic Fan. The remote-mountedhydraulic fan is temperature sensitiveproviding variable speeds when needed, which minimizes power requirements. The result is more power to the groundand faster cycle times.

To determine performance, read fromGross Weight down to % Effective Grade.Effective Grade equals actual % favorablegrade plus 1% for each 10 kg/metric ton (20 lb/ton) of Rolling Resistance. From thispoint, read horizontally to the curve withthe highest attainable speed range. Then, godown to Maximum Speed. Retarding effecton these curves represents full application ofthe retarder.

Gradeability/Speed/Rimpull

To determine performance, read fromGross Weight down to % Total Resistance.Total Resistance equals actual % grade plus1% for each 10 kg/metric ton (20 lb/ton) ofRolling Resistance. From this point, readhorizontally to the curve with the highestattainable speed range. Then, go down toMaximum Speed. Usable Rimpull dependson traction available.
