This is not the start to the year we expected. We are now seeing things change once again as those businesses that were closed start the process of reopening. This time has created the need for our local businesses to innovate and fast-for-ward their evolution. Spearfish is home to 90% small businesses, and they are feeling the economic strain. Now more than ever, we need to support our neighbors as we transition to a new normal. We are all in business together. We all play an important role from being business owners, consumers, taxpayers, and philanthropists. Every dollar spent in Spearfish has a bigger impact than ever.

SUPPORT YOUR NEIGHBORSWe’re in business together

10 or less 11-20 21-99 100+

Keep in mind that every online purchase comes with hidden costs to our kids, our neighbors, ourselves and our communities. Our local businesses support our youth sports and programs, our local non-profits, our church-es, and so much more.

Brick-and-mortar stores, even if not locally owned, hire local employees. They house jobs that are full-time, part-time, a second income, or maybe even a young person’s first job. Out of town and online purchases could take these jobs away, eliminate future jobs, and steal the money away from our community.

A dollar you do not spend locally is a dollar you take out of local circulation. A dollar spent locally is passed on to an employee, who then, in turn, buys something from a local store. That dollar then again keeps the doors open and employees paid at another Spearfish business.

This dollar also creates a local sales tax. The same sales tax that goes toward street repairs, stop lights, law enforce-ment, firefighters, our parks and green spaces, and many more items we take for granted (until they are broken or in disrepair.)

MEMBERSHIP BY NUMBERS OF EMPLOYEESThank you all for everything you do for our community. Without strong, thriving businesses, Spearfish would not be the community where we love to live, play, and shop.

Thank you to our large, medium, and small Spearfish businesses. As you can see in the graph, Spearfish businesses with 10 or fewer employees make up an overwhelming majority of the Spearfish Chamber Membership.

We know there is nothing small about small business.

SEDC Receives $6,000 Black Hills Energy GrantSpearfish Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) recently received a $6,000 grant through Black Hills Energy’s Economic Development Grant program to support ongoing marketing ef-forts targeted at attracting additional outdoor product businesses to the Spearfish area. Thanks in part to past grant support from Black Hills Energy, SEDC has been able to attend both the Out-door Retailer Summer Market tradeshow in Denver as well as the International Fly Tackle Dealer show. Participation in these shows provided SEDC with the unique opportunity to connect directly with key decision makers and influencers from the out-door product market and resulted in continued communication with over three dozen prospective companies. This newest grant will allow SEDC to place strategic advertisements in numerous regional and national publications, as well as boost social media, video and website efforts.
