9he measure of an earthua"e4s magnitude is essentially eui*alent to the energy released during

the initial rupture of the fault ( "now they are not e:actly the same, $ut it is close enough)&

dentification of earthua"es often start with a Magnitude %&' and go up to a Magnitude 6', withthe largest recorded earthua"e in history $eing a Magnitude &7&

9he magnitude scale specifically measures the amplitude of the of the wa*es released from anearthua"e (USGS)& 9he Moment Magnitude scale, as it is called (replaced the -ichter Scale), is

a logarithmic scale& As it goes up one num$er the size of the amplitude increased $y a factor of

6'& 9o ma"e it a little easier to understand you can compare this to the energy released& So, each

whole num$er is ?6&8%%?% times more powerful than the last one (i&e& a magnitude ? is ?6&8%%times more powerful than a magnitude %)&

0or energy comparisons, let us con*ert the amount of energy to <oules that is released from anearthua"e& 9he largest earthua"e e*er recorded was the Chilean &7& 9hat would ha*e released
