Ten Tips for Successful Public Speaking1 KNOW YOUR MATERIAL
Know more about what you plan to say than you include in your speech. Use personal stories and conversational language so it is easier to remember.
2 PRACTICE. PRACTICE. PRACTICE. Rehearse your message and delivery out loud or with a “test audience.”
3 KNOW THE SPACE The day of the engagement, arrive early and practice in the space using your visual aids
and microphone, if possible. Get comfortable with your speech and the space.
4 USE YOUR PROPS EFFECTIVELY Ensure that your story and your props are used in an effective and simple way. Capture
the attention with the prop and flesh out the story to keep the audience’s attention.
5 KNOW THE AUDIENCE AND THE ENVIRONMENT Greet some of the audience members as they arrive. Get a few people’s names and call
on them during the presentation. It will help you engage the audience and put you at ease.
6 RELAX Try to do deep breathing or visualization exercises to transform nervous energy into
enthusiasm.
7 VISUALIZE YOURSELF REACHING THE CROWD Imagine yourself speaking to the audience in a clear, confident voice. Visualize
the audience receiving your message and responding to it with enthusiasm.
8 REALIZE THAT PEOPLE WANT YOU TO SUCCEED Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative and entertaining.
Knowing this will help you be secure in the expectation and the outcome.
9 CONCENTRATE ON THE MESSAGE, NOT THE MEDIUM Focus your attention on the mission—assuring help for the world’s most vulnerable
people; this will help you reach the audience with the necessary passion and direction for soliciting donations and support.
10 GAIN EXPERIENCE Experience builds confidence, which is key to effective speaking. Participate in as many
campaign events as possible to gain confidence in your message and its delivery.

Global Impact Sample Speaking Engagement TemplateThroughout the campaign season, you will speak at various campaign events, representing Global Impact and its alliance of more than 80 charity partners.
Here are a few key things to remember when presenting for Global Impact:
Each presentation should be customized for your audience and your time frame.
Many donors are not familiar with Global Impact and its charity partners, so it is important to be simple and clear when describing who we are and what we do.
When describing the alliance, mention a few of the more well-known charity partners to help the audience identify with the donors and to demonstrate the strength of the organization (e.g., Save the Children®, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF ,
Doctors Without Borders, World Vision).
Use props (such as photos, bed nets, hygiene kits, Plumpy’Nut, etc.) to distinguish Global Impact from other organizations, and demonstrate how simple, inexpensive tools are saving millions of lives worldwide.
Present the need while impressing them with the great work being done around the world. Engage them to ensure they leave with a feeling of hope.
Stress the importance of giving any amount and the impact a gift of any size can make on a person’s life. Use our “What Your Gift Can Do” as examples.
If people ask why they should donate to international causes, remind them that they can donate both domestically and internationally. Encourage them to continue their charitable giving here, keeping in mind that with just $5 per pay period, they could provide textbooks to a young girl in Venezuela, giving her a chance to read, write and thrive as an adult.
introduction (30 seconds)
Introduce yourself.
Thank them for supporting all of the charities and causes represented in the campaign.
Note: When speaking to a CFC audience, charity representatives must represent all charities in that campaign. It is critically important to thank them for supporting the broader participating charities and the programs and services they provide.
Introduce Global Impact and its partner charities.

personal story (2 minutes)
Set the stage by providing a personal story that piques the audience’s interest and that helps them realize the issue or problem.
Use a story relevant to the current times/situation and a prop with the story, if possible.
SAMPLE STORY — Food crisis in Sudan (Prop: Plumpy’Nut) The humanitarian crisis in Sudan’s Blue Nile State is dire. Refugees from the area
have fled into neighboring South Sudan in an attempt to escape the ravages of civil war. Hunger and malnutrition threaten the population.
The hunger crisis is so serious that people have to survive on foraged food from the wild. Children are subsisting on a single meal a day. Charities working in the area have set up health centers to provide small children with life-saving interventions such as Plumpy’Nut, which treats severe malnutrition.
Infused with vitamins and protein, this high-energy, peanut-based “miracle food” is low-cost, easy to conserve, and can nurse a malnourished child back to good health in days. Your donation of any amount will give these children a fighting chance for both recovery and a healthy life.
Global Impact ensures that your dollars go the distance, reaching out to meet real needs with real results all around the world.
Time permitting, you can provide key statements from “What Your Gift Can Do” that demonstrate the impact of an investment in an individual’s life and the range of funding areas.
conclusion (45 seconds)The impact that is made with just a few dollars always amazes me, but it is real. The impact that you make is real. Together, we’re able to build a bright future for children, families and communities around the world.
From providing shelter after a flood to microfinancing programs for farmers; from providing food and clean water in the wake of a disaster to textbooks and school clothes for young children, we ensure that your dollars go to the causes that matter most to you.
Your gift makes a tremendous difference, and we thank you in advance for providing anything you can to support the world’s most vulnerable people.
When you make your campaign contributions, remember Global Impact and our alliance of more than 80 partner charities—your resource for international giving.
