  • A whole day dedicated to the most innovative tools to make a new kind of philanthropy: diversified, global, collaborative and more business-like, focused on intervention and investment models to produce a measurable impact, both at an economic and social le-vel. This is the Philanthropy Day, this year at its sixth edition, the event on Strategic Phi-lanthropy organized by Lang Italia. The event takes place at Palazzo Clerici, an historical palace in the center of Milan, and sees the participation of international foundations end experts from all over the world.

During the day, the focus will be on main themes that are shaping the debate in Italy and abroad over the necessary evolution of philanthropy to go beyond short-term projects-support towards:

Investing on the capacity and sustainability of non profit organizations

Focusing on the results achieved by the organization rather than on its “overhead”

Designing projects based on the Theory of Change that puts outcomes rather than outputs at the forefront

Assessing the social impact that has been generated

Choosing the right legal vehicle to achieve the philanthropic goals

Defining the right mix of models (philanthropy or social investment)

    THE TOOLS FOR HIGH-IMPACT PHILANTHROPY

Palazzo Clerici was bought in the second half of the seventeenth century by the Clerici family, who were silk merchants and bankers from the Como Lake.

In the 1700s the Clerici family consolidated its power thanks to the remarkable esteem that the Austrian rule had for the local nobility. In this period, the building was one of the most luxurious residences in the city.

In 1740 Giorgio Antonio Clerici commissioned Giambattista Tiepolo to decorate the ceiling of the main gallery which became the Galleria del Tiepolo.

The fresco by Tiepolo is the ace of the chariot of the Sun across the sky inhabited by the deities of Olympus and surrounded by land creatures and animals that are symbols of the continents with gures, characters, myths and allegories.

  • IMPACT ASSESSMENT IN HUMANITARIAN AID AND COOPERATION PROGRAMS

In the great debate on social impact assessment, what is the role of evaluations in humanitarian aid and cooperation programs? What are the peculiar challenges of each? The topic will be addressed considering Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation experience. As a responsible funder, the Foundation decided to address resources to respond to the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan; after months, it wondered about the impact of the initiative, starting an articulate ex-ternal assessment carried out by Lang Italia. The purpose of the evaluation was to figure out how Foundation's funds integrate the larger huma-nitarian response system in South Sudan and if some interactions had taken place at a policy level in the country. Besides, impact assessment in international cooperation programs has diffe-rent features from humanitarian aid. The issue will be addressed by Paolo Caroli, founder of one of the major Italian NGOs, who has spent the last 30 years in the international development sector. Paolo is the coordinator of several international programs generating positive social impact.

CAPACITY BUILDING: INVESTING ON COST STRUCTURE TO BE PERFORMING

In the private sector it is common practice to in-vest in start-ups and small businesses with strong potential to foster growth, achieve sustainability and maximize financial returns. On the contrary, in non profit sector this model still clashes with the idea that resources must be used entirely to sup-port programs, in order to produce social value. This program-focused scheme has 3 unpleasant effects: sentences non profit organizations to a constant state of under-funding and a spasmodic research of funds, and jeopardizes both sustaina-bility and effectiveness of organizations, ending up reducing their capacity / possibility to genera-te significant long-term social change. The session will analyse each scenario to demonstrate how investing in capacity is in fact investing in impact generation, examining benefits and challenges. In particular, 3 topics will be addressed:1. development of high-performing non-profit organizations through a "Performance Practice" model2. acceleration of market-oriented social enterpri-ses generating shared socio-economic value3. enforcement of a "profit to non-profit" appro-ach through an integrated strategy to respond to both capital need and supply, providing capacity building tools and patient capital supply.

ABSTRACTWHAT IS THE IMPACT OF IMPACT INVESTING?It doesn't matter whether a cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice.

GIIN-Global Impact Investing Network estimates that impact investments in the world manage over USD 228 billion in 2018. Tiresia forecast predicts that Italian market size will exceed EUR 400 million in the next 3 years. However important this may be, these figures do not affect the huge volume of assets managed worldwide: PwC estimates Assets Under Management (AuM) will double in 2025, rising from USD 84.9 trillion in 2016 to 111.2 trillion in 2020 and 145.4 trillion in 2025. So why so much ado, even among insiders? There are two possible reasons, although not the only ones. Addarii, Shapiro and Se-bastianelli (Plusvalue) wrote on The Mint Magazine that the biggest impact of impact investing is taking a step forward to a world where business doesn't mean just profit. The global financial system must change, and impact investing is a look into the future. On the other hand, we at Lang Italia Foundation think that, provided that business model transparency is guaranteed, it doesn't matter whether a cat is black or white (grant, debt, equity) as long as it catches mice (it works efficiently for the change, remo-ving causes of inequality, poverty, disadvantage, etc.). In fact, probably a better organizational perfor-mance and a greater social effectiveness result from the successful combination of diversified funding opportunities.

  • ABSTRACT

PHILANTHROPY AWARDS 2018Lang Italia Foundation decided to create Philanthropy Awards to celebrate the best initiatives ge-nerating social change and making philanthropic system more effective. Growing and ever-chan-ging social needs call for a change in non profit organizations to produce significant and long-term effects for stakeholders, through an innovative, strategic and entrepreneurial approach. Lang Italia Foundation has always promoted effective philanthropy and supports community-o-riented companies, grant makers and non-profit organizations: that's why this is the first Award in Italy to acknowledge and celebrate, on Philanthropy Day 2018, the most outstanding persons and organizations for their strategic vision and impact-generating skills.

ARE DONOR ADVISED FUNDS THE FUTURE OF PHILANTHROPY?

There can be various reasons for the multiplication and outperforming results of Donor Advised Funds (DAF) in recent years, especially in the US: the huge number of newly established foundations, their cost-effectiveness and organizational efficiency, simpler administration, less bureaucracy, tran-sparency, operating speed, specific competence, etc... However, Lang Italia Foundation considers the main cause of success is that a DAF – being a sort of philanthropic broker through the Lang Eu-rope Onlus Foundation - can easily spread a cultu-re of philanthropy based on a shared (not indivi-dual) experience among philanthropists, to build a proactive and strategic philanthropy, measuring social impact and attacking root causes of poverty and disadvantage. Can this be a common scenario also in other countries where DAFs are growing? Which stories and examples can help us really un-derstand if DAF could create a positive emulation?

THEORY OF CHANGE: THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS SUCCESS?

The Theory of Change (ToC) is a specific and par-ticipatory process through which organizations members and stakeholders plan and outline their impact purposes and detail the conditions to achieve them. However, apart from terminological and methodological questions, what are the impli-cations, benefits and challenges of the Theory of Change? Can ToC be a result-oriented method to prepare project assessment? Does it help strategic planning and joint strategy at different levels of an organization? Can it tighten relationship between non-profits and funders, making it easier for grant makers to support the right program among diffe-rent high-quality options? The session will discuss an example of Theory of Change in a Mission Bam-bini program, applied with Lang Italia Foundation scientific support, in order to explore a pratictal application of the process. The Theory of Change has been increasingly appreciated in recent years, but still very little has been achieved in its imple-mentation in our country.

BEYOND CORPORATE PHILANTHROPY: CORPORATE FOUNDATION PLAYS A STRATEGIC ROLE

For the sixth consecutive year, this work session aims to look into evolutions and trends of corporate philanthropy with a particular focus on the role of corporate foundations in a company. A corporate foundation's governance, mission and operations are closely influenced by the company. What ad-ded value do corporated foundations bring to the business and what contribution do they offer to the community where they both operate through partnerships and joint efforts? What approach and intervention strategy can contribute to achieving social change and impact according to Sustainable Development Goals?
