A Home at Last in Ruto, Indonesia
In Ruto, Indonesia, a construction project was begun to build a convent for the Sisters serving in the parish, who up until now have been living in a temporary building. We had been waiting to construct the convent since we first sent our Sisters there, but there were several hold-ups which caused delays. Finally everything was in order for us to begin construction on the convent. Because the parishioners were helping with the construction, and then the rainy season came, they had to stop work so they could go to their fields to plant. Everyone was thankful that the rain came after the drought. After several months, the work resumed again. The heavy and difficult work was done by women as well as men; such as breaking up the big boulders for the foundation and molding 9,000 hollow blocks. They had to transport them from the area of the flash floods a kilometer away from the site. The parishioners worked in groups as scheduled by the members of the council, and they understood that the final phase would be done by professional workers. It was very touching to see them so happy to participate in the construction of our Sisters’ convent. They were like the Israelites in Egypt – not by forced labor – but by a labor of love. Somehow it is their guarantee that the Sisters will "stay put" for good if we have our own convent. We give thanks to GOD for the heavy load of work done by the parishioners and for the Parish Council’s support. So with the assistance from the Hong Kong Province through the Generalate, the construction will soon continue. Sr. Elizabeth Situngkir, our Sister architect, helped to finalize the specification of the construction as planned and approved by the Generalate.
