READING MATTERS (November)

To improve comprehension, literacy skills, and academic skills, Broad Run encour-ages students to read for pleasure. In addition to 15 minutes of recreational read-ing during study hall, Broad Run now has a book club for all interested students. To become part of the book club, known as “Chat and Chew,” students read the selected book and then discuss the book during a lunch block. The first Chat and Chew occurred on October 16th. The book “We Were Liars”, written by e. lock-hart, was read and discussed by both staff members and interested students during all lunch shifts. Dessert was provided for the students who attended.

The next “Chat and Chew” will take place during all lunch shifts on Friday, Decem-ber 4. Students will discuss the book “A Monster Calls”, by Patrick Ness. This book is part of the one book, one community project sponsored by Loudoun County Public Library. Patrick Ness, a native Virginian and published author, who now lives in England, will be speaking about his writing on November 18th at 7 p.m. at Smart’s Mill Middle School in Leesburg.

DEBATE TEAM

Strong Start

October left our Broad Run Debate & Speech Team with no question that the 2015-16 tournament season had begun. Students competed in four tournaments, ranging from WACFL competitions in Virginia to national circuit events in DC and Michigan.

The team also was awarded recognition for being in the top 10% of high school speechand debate teams in the United States.Broad Run received notice from the Nation-al Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) that it is now a member of the organization's prestigious "100 Club." The path to joining this elite organization requires winning 100 or more awards in the past calendar year through the combined efforts of all debaters and speakers, which is not an easy feat. As a member of the 100 Club, Broad Run in the top 10% of high schools in the nation. "This recognition is remarkable since it represents outstanding commitment to teaching stu-dents essential life skills—including com-munication, research, listening, writing, and organization,” according to the NSDA, in a letter to Principal Dave Spage.

Broad Run Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, Con-gress, and Public Forum debaters compet-ed against hundreds of other teams at our first two of thirteen Washington-Arlington Catholic Forensic League (WACFL) tour-naments of the year, with Congressor Tyler Hess (Speech Captain) winning Third Place recognition and qualifying for a post-season Metrofinal appearance. The Varsity Policy Debate teams of Michael Logue/Achal Patel and Megan Marshall/Shreya Singh placed Fourth and Fifth places respectively, accom-panied by the Junior Varsity Policy team of Syed Hasnain and Ben House (all qualified

for Metrofinals). Additionally, Dinh Tran was named Third Speaker in the JV division. Broad Run also sent two of its

Varsity Policy teams to compete at the Capitol Beltway Classic, with the partner-ship of Javaria Abbasi (Team Captain) and Anshul Nanda (Policy Captain) capturing top honors as tournament champions. Not only did Javaria and Anshul navigate the six preliminary rounds without losing a single round, they emerged victorious from the elimination rounds undefeated for the two-day tournament, winning every one of the 12 judges’ ballots.

Travelling to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to compete in five days of Policy Debate competition were seniors Rittwik Dhar and Rahul Soni. Ritt and Rahul distinguished themselves by placing second in the Varsity Round Robin, meeting and besting some of the top teams in the country in the process. The team overall distinguished itself as well by successfully hosting the largest debate tournament ever at Broad Run. Fulfilling one of our responsibilities to the WACFL

Capitol Beltway Classic Tournament Champions Javaria Abbasi and Anshul Nanda, with Achal Patel and Megan Marshall.

organization, we managed a tournament comprised of 453 student competitors and 94 adult judges, pretty much filling every available classroom, the cafeteria, the audi-torium, and the library. One of our biggest challenges was to feed lunch to those hun-dreds quickly enough to get them back into competition, and we couldn’t have done it without the dozens of parent and student volunteers who pitched in beginning at 7:00 in the morning.

Large thank yous go to Parent Liaison Sarwet Abbasi and Treasurer Liz Hess who led the following team of workers who contributed time and food: Teddy Chu, Manisha Nanda, Doreen Varblow, Marianne Chacin, Jagdish Patel, Nandini Yedulla, Oriana Figueroa, Amanda Wong, Juliet Varblow, Nikhil Sastry, Abhijit Adhikari, Daphne deHaven Santosh Shetty, Manisha Adhikari, Zenia deHaven, Elise Varblow, Nandhini Nallamotu, Vani Valluru Nallamotu, Taylor Lee, Heidi Myers, Swati Podury, Moneeka Dhar, Sarah Mar-shall, Noella Pengal, Archesh Soni, Tammy Reynolds, Javaria Abbasi, Rimsha Abbasi, Greg Hess, Amanda Hess, Patty Alexander, and Jeff Alexander. (Our apologies to any-one’s names we’ve overlooked; you and your contributions are not, however.)

The team also thanks Heritage Landscape Services, Paisano’s Pizza, Giant Food of Ash-burn Village, Bertucci’s Italian Restaurant, and Chick-fil-A for their generous support and valuable contributions to the team and the tournament. It’s never too late to join one of the top teams in the nation, and any interested Spartans should drop into an af-ter-school practice on Tuesdays and Thurs-day, or contact Coaches Ron Richards and Jim Dunning.

PTSO

Please join the Broad Run High School Parent-Teacher-Student Organization (a 501(3)(c) organization) for the 2015-2016 school year.

WHY SHOULD I BECOME A MEMBER?Let’s face it, the beginning of school brings about a mountain of paperwork, forms, need to spend money here, need to spend money there…it can be overwhelming. So you may be looking at this form and wondering, why should I join? Well, here is why:

The membership fee for BRHS PTSO is only $35 per family, but what we give back to community is much more. Last year only 16% of families joined the PTSO, but through fundraising efforts, we were able to spend, on average, $21 per student on educational support and enrichment programs.

There funds pay for programs/efforts such as the following:

• Programs to enrich the education and school life of the students of BRHS, including the Men-tor Program, Freshman/New Student Welcome Reception, Parent/Student College Preparatory Programs, Homecoming parade, and AIDS Aware-ness Program.

• Teacher requests – Some items or events that are not in the yearly school budget and would not be possible without the help of the BRHS PTSO. Some examples: Battle of the Books Club/Spartans Read, Special Needs Field Day, TechEd Projects, Student Art Displays, Magazine Sub-scriptions for English classes, Impact club (for students dealing with a significant medical/death related family change), and school based clubs and organizations such as NHS and DECA.

• Scholarships - Each spring the BRHS PTSO awards up to ten $500 college scholarships to the most deserving BRHS graduating seniors regard-less of gender or educational path.

• Project Graduation - The BRHS PTSO contrib-utes to the Project Graduation All-Night Party that is a yearly event held after graduation night at a local venue. It is a nationwide effort to pro-vide graduating seniors with a fun, safe place to celebrate their last night together as high school students.

• Hospitality - The BRHS PTSO supplements the

Hospitality committee needs when parent dona-tions are not sufficient to provide for food and drinks at many school events including: Back to School Kick-Off, Academic Awards Night, Na-tional Honor Society Induction, Foreign Language Induction, Teacher Appreciation Week, Junior Ring Ceremony.

Imagine how much more we can provide for the BRHS students and teachers if we can achieve full membership of all BRHS families!

NO FRILLS FUNDRAISERWhen completing the membership form you will also have the opportunity to participate in the PTSO’s “No Frills Fundraiser.” We realize that sometimes it’s easier to donate money in lieu of your time…with hectic lives, teenagers and their busy schedules; it’s tough to do it all. Consider making a donation to our “No Frills Fundraiser” to help fund the BRHS PTSO programs. Do-nations made to our “No Frills Fundraiser” are tax-deductible!

DOES YOUR COMPANY MATCH EMPLOYEE CASH DONATIONS?Some companies will match donations that their employees make to 501(3)(c) organizations so please check with your company to see if they have a matching program. We can do so much more with a little help from everyone!

HOW DO I BECOME A PTSO MEMBER?There are two ways to become a BRHS PTSO Member:

1. Click here to complete the membership form online AND pay for your membership with a credit card:

https://fs20.formsite.com/ashburn/form12/index.html

2. Download the attached Membership Form form from below and return the completed form and check to the Main Office at BRHS or mail. it to BRHS PTSO, 21670 Ashburn Road, Ashburn, Virginia 20147.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Broad Run DECA’s Hurricane PINK project touched down in NYC on November 1! The Broad Run marketing students headed to New York City to promote their project, Hurricane PINK. The DECA Chapter took 47 passionate marketing students to create awareness about Loudoun County’s local breast cancer charity and network, Loudoun Breast Health Network. In New York, they were on the TODAY Show, and even got a personal interview with Dylan Dreyer! What an experience this was for our students!!! They represented our school and community in the most honorable ways, all while creating awareness for breast cancer and for LBHN! Not only did they make it on the TODAY Show, but Hurricane PINK also has its own awareness and spirit week October 29 – November 6. The final event will be Friday, November 6, at the home football game against Tuscarora! We invite everyone to come out and to purchase their own Hurricane PINK t-shirts (long sleeves are $15 and short sleeves are $10) to support this cause! Also, at the game, we will have a raffle with amazing prizes and even a bake sale – all to benefit LBHN! All proceeds from our t-shirt sales, raffle, and bake sale will be donated to Loudoun Breast Health Network! LBHN (http://www.lbhn.org/) is a local charity and network that supports women and families who are going through cancer treatment. At LBHN, the board of directors are all volunteers! They do not take salaries for all their time and efforts; all the money that is raised and donated goes directly to breast cancer patients and their families! Thank you for all your support for this project and cause! The students leading this project are Lauren Stevens, Josh Wohlgemuth, and Anna Deutsch. For more information, please contact them at: [email protected]. Follow the project at Twitter: @Hurricane_PINK / Facebook: Hurricane PINK / Instagram: @hurricanepinkk Hurricane PINK: Beware of the Storm….
