Spotlight on IMPACT

IMPACT is a program at BRHS that provides support for approximately 13 students who either have a family member or parent(s) dealing with serious illness or have lost a family member or parent(s). The group is led by Mr. Scott Valyear and BRHS Senior Allie Sims, who has participated in this group for 4 years. Students have support on a daily basis, including a regular study hall, occasional field trips and weekly visits to Dominion Trail Elementary School. At Dominion Trail, BRHS

students are paired with an elementary school student who also has been affected by illness or a death in their families. Not only are BRHS students helping and supporting one another, but they are reaching out to other students, helping them with school work and just being a buddy. Once a year students gather for a gratitude luncheon in the BRHS library to recognize the challenges they have faced and celebrate the memories that they have. They invite family as well as a teacher they have had who has impacted their life in a positive manner. We are extremely proud of the difference that this program is making at Broad Run High School.

PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) Our 9th, 10th, and 11th graders took the PSAT on October 15th. Scores will arrive in December along with information on understanding their results. While 9th and 10th graders took the PSAT for practice, 11th grade students should discuss their results with their School Counselor to prepare for the Spring SAT. MARCHING SPARTANS GIVE STRONG SHOWING AT JMU PARADE OF CHAMPIONS

The Broad Run High School Marching Spartans placed second their class at the James Madison University Parade of Champions. The Parade of Champions, sponsored by the Marching Royal Dukes who also give two exhibition performances, has been a staple at JMU for the last 37 years. This year’s event featured 48 high schools from all over Virginia competing in four classes based on the size of the band.

Performing this year’s show, “Eyes in the Infinite: A Journey through Space”, the Marching Spartans earned the Best Guard award and placed second among the 13 bands in the 2A Class with a score of 77.5. Broad Run Band Director Bram Smith was delighted to bring home a trophy for the fourth year in a row. Spartan band members are “hard workers and I am proud of them,” said Mr. Smith. “Everyone is always impressed with Broad Run marching band” from the judges as shown by the scores and awards, to Mr. Smith’s peers at other schools who talk to him at competitions throughout the season.

After the Parade of Champions, the band’s focus shifts to state championships and the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association (VBODA) assessments. Getting assessed a superior rating by VBODA would put this year’s band program on the road to being named a Virginia Honor Band for an unprecedented three years a row. Mr. Smith is hopeful, pointing out that although “this is a very young band, with more than one-third being freshman, they are improving tremendously as the season goes on.”

Elsewhere in the band program, the Jazz Band is preparing for their Winter Concert to be held on December 1st and the Orchestra for their Winter Band Concert on December 11th. Both events start at 7:00pm in the Broad Run auditorium and are free and open to the public.
