He was in search of a route to the Orient and in search of riches. • During A four year expedi:on that began in 1539, Hernando DeSoto explored much of what is now the south eastern United States, including North Carolina. He was in search of gold and A desire to convert the na:ves to Chris:anity. He found very liHle gold, but le^ a trail disease and slaughter among the Na:ve Americans. • In 1566, Capt. Juan Pardo began an expedi:on where he explored the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. He established Fort San Juan near present day Morganton, NC.
