KINDLING CASE STUDYEARLY YEARS IN SOMERSETWith Spaeda

MINI BEASTSWith Spaeda

Spaeda is an arts and education partnership that creates opportunities for the children and young people in Somerset to experience high quality arts activity.

Case Study: The Bug Hotel, creating natural habitatsMilford Infants School in Yeovil has an excellent ‘Forest School’ area within its grounds that the school decided to show off to the wider community and the local nursery during an Open Day. Artist Gordon Field created a permanent construction from recycled timber, providing a source for ‘mini beast’ sessions within the school. Gordon wanted to produce a larger bughouse than usual to enable a small group to gather around it and seek out small creatures. Two of the sides were decorated with slithers of green beech and ash overlaid with drawings in permanent ink. This Bug Hotel is a prototype that Gordon would like to develop at other schools and locations.

Open Days such as these offer a unique point of contact with the children and their parents. They’re a good opportunity to present ideas and activities that children can carry on at home to enhance their range of experiences.

All Spaeda Artists and Creative Practitioners have enhanced level CRB checks, public liability Insurance and are experienced in delivering arts programmes with children and young people. Artists can be found on the Spaeda website.
