2014 HOLIDAY TOY PREDICTIONSParents often fi nd them-selves waiting in long lines to snag the hottest toys for children’s holiday gifts. Shoppers arrive at retail stores in droves to grab the newest video game con-soles or must-have dolls or action fi gures.

From Cabbage Patch Dolls of the 1980s to the Elmo craze of the 1990s, every genera-tion seems to have its own “must-have” holiday gift.

This year, holiday shoppers may want to start shopping early if they hope to land any of the following items that fi gure to be this year’s hot toys.

• “Frozen”-themed toys: Mega-retailer Walmart pre-dicts that toys inspired by the smash hit fi lm “Frozen” will continue to be hot com-modities this holiday season. To meet demand, the retailer already is stocking up on the

popular characters and oth-er products banking on the popularity of the fi lm. If the special girl in your life is still enamored with all things “Frozen,” it’s a smart bet to start your holiday buying early this year.

• “Hunger Games” athletic items: Fans of the “Hunger Games” trilogy, be it the books, movies or both, are familiar with lead character Katniss’ prowess with a bow and arrow. Bows inspired by the movie are in demand and will appeal to both girls and boys testing their ar-chery skills.

• Beats by Dr. Dre: Music-lov-ers still consider these head-phones must-have items. They’re especially prevalent among the teen market. Available in a variety of col-ors, users can coordinate their Beats headphones with their clothing or accessories.

• Lego Minecraft: It was only a matter of time before Lego got in on the action of one of the hottest games to sweep the Internet and video game console world. Minecraft is a digital building game that has enthralled gamers of all ages. Now Minecraft enthu-siasts can recreate on-screen worlds in tangible Lego ver-sions.

The holiday season is on the horizon, and it’s never too early to begin shopping for the toys and games experts predict will be this year’s must-have items.

WINTER PREP CHECKLIST

Fall is a time to prepare homes, vehicles and even our psyches for the arrival of winter. To get your car cold-weather ready, check and repair these items now.

• Tire pressure can drop in cold weather. When tires are underinfl ated, you lose fuel effi ciency, so monitor and maintain tire pressure throughout the winter.

• Those who live in particu-larly cold climates should switch from all-season to winter tires. Much as you wear winter boots to pro-vide more traction and pro-tection than sneakers, so should you equip your vehi-cle with tires that will stand up to winter terrain.

• Check on the status of your battery and its start-ing power. Cold weather can put more strain on a car bat-tery. A battery that is already weak may not turn over when you need it most.

• Replace worn wiper blades and upgrade to a windshield fl uid that is rated for subzero temperatures. Each of these items will improve visibility when winter precipitation is making its presence felt.

• Schedule an oil change at the beginning of winter. Dirty oil can hinder cold-weather starts and, if cou-pled with low coolant levels, can make it diffi cult for the engine to turn over.

• Keep jumper cables, a bat-

tery booster pack and warn-ing cones in your vehicle. These can come to the res-cue if your battery dies and you’re stranded on the side of the road.

• While you’re stocking the trunk or cargo bed, include a shovel, sand or cat litter, a fl ashlight, an ice scraper, water, and a blanket. These are good emergency items to have in the event your car breaks down in the winter. You can dig your tires out of a snow drift with the shovel and apply litter to increase traction. The blanket will come in handy if you have to sit in a cold car for a while awaiting roadside service.

• Consider taking a winter driving course. Icy, snowy conditions completely change the defensive tac-tics needed to navigate the roads. A prepared driver is one who is more likely to avoid accidents and make it home safely.

IS THERE A SECURITY RISK

WITH SELF-DRIVING

VEHICLES? Some people simply can-not wait until the day when autonomous cars become the norm. A few innovators, including Google, have al-ready dipped their toes into the self-driving car market. But the convenience and safety of autonomous cars may be contradicted by the security risks such vehicles pose.

Law enforcement agencies have said that autonomous cars may encourage crimi-nal behavior. Criminals may evade police by changing the programming in self-driving cars to bypass the rules of the road. Having their hands free in an auton-omous vehicle may enable criminals to fi re weapons or handle other dangerous equipment while the vehicle is in motion, and cars fi lled with explosives also may be programmed to hit targets.

Autonomous vehicles also may be vulnerable to hack-ers. Hackers may be able to take over an autonomous vehicle in much the same way they would take con-trol of a computer, tablet or smartphone.

Right now it seems unlikely that the current crop of autonomous cars will be state-of-the-art crime ve-hicles, seeing as Google’s version cannot drive faster than 25 miles per hour. But these concerns are things manufacturers will have to consider before they can of-fer autonomous vehicles for sale to the general public.

Thanksgiving this year is about as late in November as it can be so we’re still a week away from the annual welcoming of a tree into our homes. If you step back and try to be objective, the practice of installing a tree inside our home at this time of year seems a bit bizarre. How did all this get started; and when? The symbolism and use of trees as decorations at this time of year are far older than many of us suspect. It is known, for instance, that pre-Christian Romans displayed decorated evergreens (oak trees which are evergreen in that part of the world). They lit the tree with candles and often topped the tree with a sun symbol. The ancient Celts of the British Isles also ornamented oak trees with apples and candles to offer thanks to the sun during the solstice period. Many of us can still remember when the Christmas tree wasn’t put up until Christmas Eve. This tradition likely had its roots (no pun intended, well...maybe) in the English tradition of bringing home the Yule log on Christmas Eve. The Yule log was generally a large stump, often including the roots, and was decorated with mistletoe, holly and other greenery. The log was lighted with a bit of the previous year’s log (thus protecting the house from fire for the upcoming year) and needed to be kept burning for at least twelve hours to insure continued good fortune. The evergreen tree as the tree of choice for solstice celebrating appears to have its origins in the Christianizing of the Germanic tribes of Eastern Europe. Some of the earliest accounts tell of St. Boniface dedicating the fir tree to the Christ Child with the oath “You are the light of the world, a tree ever green” to counter the sacred oak of Odin in the eighth century. Other accounts credit Martin Luther as the first to bring home a cut evergreen tree and decorate it with candles that symbolize the stars in the sky over Bethlehem the night Christ was born. Hundreds of years passed until the tradition of decorating evergreen trees at Christmas became common. It wasn’t until 1841 when King Albert displayed a decorated evergreen tree in his palace that the tradition took hold in English speaking countries. Like the American people, American Holiday celebrations have become a melting pot of customs and traditions brought to our shores from the older cultures of our forefathers. The evergreen, ancient symbol of life ever lasting is still included as the bright focal point of a celebration of rebirth, light and life. Whatever the origins of the practice, I love the smell of a fresh Balsam Fir when I bring it inside. The trick is to keep the tree hydrated so the needles stay on and the tree stay fresh and fragrant. The first step is to get a fresh tree. When you’re out in the tree lot picking out your tree, bent the little branch tips to make sure they are supple, not brittle. With Thanksgiving as late as it is this year, all the firs should be in fine shape. Beware of spruce trees which are notorious for falling apart quickly once they’re cut and brought inside. Next, make sure to make a fresh cut on the base of the tree right before you bring it inside. The reason this is so important is because the tree has sucked air into the bottom-most cells of the trunk. Even if the tree is placed in water, it can’t absorb it because the first cells at the base are clogged with air. A fresh cut exposes fresh cells that can absorb water and sent it along to the cells above right out to the branches and needles. Most tree lots will offer to make this fresh cut for you. This is fine if you’re going to rush home and get the tree into water within and hour. If it will be longer than that, you might as well wait and make your own fresh cut on the tree at home. Make sure that your tree stand is clean before you put your tree into it. If your tree stand is like mine, it spends most of its time in the shed gathering dust. If you don’t clean this dust out, it will mix with the water the tree is absorbing and clog up those all important cells that you just exposed at the base of the truck when you made your fresh cut. When you place the tree into the stand, fill the stand up with very hot water. Hot water is absorbed more quickly than cold water so the tree will re-hydrate as quickly as possible. You don’t need to use hot water every time you add water to the stand; just the first time. Make sure that the tree stand always has water in it. If you let it run dry, the tree will suck air into the bottom cells again and it won’t be able to absorb water until another fresh cut is made. This isn’t likely to happen once the tree is decorated. Remember: Fresh Tree, Fresh Cut and Fresh Water. Thanks for the read.
