Pewter is an approximately 3-year-old loving lady thats been rescued from a difficult life fending for herself and her kittens outdoors. Pewter was a friendly stray that found herself a position as a well-cared for barn cat, but before she could be spayed, she ended up with a large litter of beautiful kittens. Her caretakers decided to bring her indoors and work

with HOPE to give her and her babies a new house-cat life. Pewter is easy going, a little talker and very affectionate. She is also a fantastic mouser...and if you dont have real ones lurking in the basement a toy mouse will do just fine! With her kittens weaned this sweet girl is ready for her forever home. Pewter is spayed, up to date on her shots and negative for FIV and

    Feline Leukemia.

Suzy is an 8-year old spayed female Poodle who is up to date on her shots and microchipped. She would do best in a calm, quiet home with no children. Suzy is housebroken and good with dogs. She is eligible for our Senior to Senior program (Adoption Fee is WAIVED for any persons 65 years of age

or older). For more information, please call #518-986-3826

PaisleyPaisley is a petite lady that craves affection. Paisley loves to rub her face against yours and will climb up into anybodys lap for a good scratch - she even enjoys a little belly rub. Paisleys previous owner reached out to HOPE for help when they ended up with several litters of kittens back-to-back. It was a brave little girl that decided to do the right thing and surrender Paisley and her kittens to HOPE so that they could have a better life and find homes where they could get the food, shelter and the veterinary care they deserved. Now shes healthy, her kittens are weaned and she is slowly gaining weight. Paisley is an absolutely lovely sweet sweet sweet girl and

cant wait to meet her forever family. She will fit right in immediately. Paisley will be spayed by ~11/15 (or before adopted), is up to date on her

shots and is negative for FIV and FeLV..

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY CORPS & TOYS FOR TOTS

BALLSTON SPA During this upcoming holiday season, Community Emergency Corps of Ballston Spa will again be an offi cial drop off point for donations for the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. For

2014, we will be partnering with the Saratoga County Sher-iff s Offi ce to broaden the scope of our support for the na-tional Toys for Tots campaign. This campaign has reached out and assisted needy and deserving children all around the capital region for over 45 years. Without this wonderful program, children in our communities would not have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays the way they deserve. In last years campaign the program reached their goal of col-lecting over 120,000 toys and distributing them to deserving

children, making their holi-days memorable ones. Our program has grown incred-ibly in 5 years, through your donations, from about 40 toys our fi rst year to well over 200 toys last season. We are hoping that by taking on the Sheriff s Department as a partner, we will see a signifi -cant increase in donations with the additional exposure throughout Saratoga Coun-ty. New, unwrapped toys, games, books, puzzles, sport balls, dolls, snow toys, and anything for kids from infant to teens are all appreciated. Stuff ed toys are the only excep-tion. We have already started to receive donations and will be accepting toys at our station at 78 Thompson St., Ballston Spa, NY until December 15th. You can drop them off anytime, days or evenings. If we are not at the building due to answer-ing emergency calls, we hope you will return at another time with your contribution. As a reminder, toys collected in this area are redistributed right back into this area to those in need. For further information or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Ray Otten, Executive Director of CEC, at 885-1478.

    HOLIDAY WASTE BY THE

NUMBERSThe holiday season gener-ates a lot of waste, and many things contribute to this ex-cess of trash this time of year.

Thousands of paper and plastic shopping bags end up in landfills after the holi-day season. Reusable cloth bags can limit the amount of bags tossed away, and users of plastic bags can recycle those bags at appropriate receptacles.

Four million tons of waste is attributed to shopping bags and wrapping paper. Recycling paper or looking for reusable items in which

to wrap gifts can cut down on paper waste.

Approximately 33 million live trees are cut down and sold in North America each year for Christmas. If you use a live tree, be sure to recycle it so it can be turned into mulch instead of being sent to a landfill. Otherwise, consider buying a potted

tree and planting it after the holidays.

Nearly 2.65 billion Christmas cards are sold and exchanged each year in the United States alone. This many cards can fill a football field 10 stories high. One less card sent per per-son can save roughly 50,000 cubic yards of paper. Electronic greetings are another way to save paper.

If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused pa-per or gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Though there is no official data that declares the best-selling holiday toy for chil-dren of all-time, its fair to assume the lovable Sesame Street figure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the first Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its stomach.

During the holiday season of 1996, many people paid far beyond market price just so their children could wake up on Christmas or Chanukah and have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been reincar-nated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to in-

spire its own craze come the holiday season. Released in 1998, Walk N Talk Elmo was a popular childrens gift, as was Rock N Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chicken Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006, Mattel, the company that produces

the Elmo dolls, announced a special commemorative Elmo to mark the 10-year an-niversary of the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some reports indicated pri-vate sellers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousands of dol-lars.

    Consider Charlton For The Holidays

The Town of Charlton is a close knit, rural community in western Saratoga County. One of the most beautiful stretches of countryside youll find anywhere, Charlton is dotted with family-owned farms, restaurants and small businesses. This bucolic setting is home to a dispropor-tionate number of engineers, perhaps because Charlton life represents a stark contrast from the intensity of work-ing in Tech Valley. The great attractions start with Ellms Family Farm (www.ellmsfarms.com), where you take a hayride through the woods and fields as you search for the perfect natural Christmas tree to cut and take home. When searching for a tree, think Ellms! A short distance away is the Charlton Tavern (www.charltontavern.com), where owners Mike and Sue Maloney create a warm, friendly environment to enjoy a unique dining experience in an authentic Irish pub. Charming is the key word here. Next door is the Charlton General Store (thecharltongeneralstore.com), offering groceries, deli and coffee to go along with some great meals. They serve breakfast and lunch all day. While on the subject of food, a short drive further north, at the intersection of Route 67 and Peaceable Street, is the Route 67 Contemporary Country Store & Caf (www.Rt67cafe.com), European style breakfast and lunch, espresso bar, locally-sourced items on the shelves, plus craft beer over 280 varieties in their famous Charlton

Beer Alley. With gas pumps outside offering 91 octane non-ethanol fuel (fuel stabilizer blended in), its easy to un-derstand why the Route 67 Country Store & Caf is a big hit with boaters, snowmobilers and classic car owners. Charlton has many farm stands such as Arnolds Produce (seasonal www.arnoldsproduce.com) and the wonderful Smith Brothers Farms & Orchard Bake Shop, (www.smithorchardbakeshop.com), makers of those great pies available in many local stores and host to next Junes 20th Anniversary Sundae on the Farm event.
