HISTORY OF SOYBEAN IN POLAND First attempt of growing soybean in Poland

    1878

    Fot. J. Nawracała

    Variety Wileńska Brunatna

    – selected out in 1925 in Vilnius by Wacław Strażewicz

    Variety Puławska Wczesna

    – selected in 1930 in Puławy by Bohdan Dzikowski

As a result in 1933 in Poland soybean was grown on 1503 ha

First field experiment with soybean in Poland

In High Agriculture School „Halina” in Żabikowo (near Poznań) he sown 19 Chinese cultivars obtained from Austria from

    prof. Haberland

All cultivars had too long vegetation period and did not mature

Lack of interest in growing soybeans in the 90's up

to 2010 was mainly due to import of cheap soybean

meal , and therefore was lack of companies buying

    soybean from farmers

Increasing interest in growing soybeans in

the last two years is the result of increase the

price of soybean meal which significantly

    improved the profitability of soybean

cultivation in Poland Fot. J. Nawracała

  • PROSPECTS FOR SOYBEAN

    SOYBEAN IN POLAND

    External factors beneficial for soybean:

    • the persistence of relatively high prices of

soybeans and soybean meal on the global market

    • EU's „greening” program, in which farmers can

    culivate soybeans,

    Fot. J. Nawracała

  • SOYBEAN IN POLAND

    Internal factors beneficial for soybean:

    • subsidies for growing grain legumes

    •subsidies for certified seeds

    • companies producing feed and company of oilseeds

processing begun buying soybean from farmers

    • start breeding of new varieties of soybean by

companies: Plant Breeding DANKO and Plant Breeding

    Strzelce

  • SOYBEAN IN POLAND

New project National Centre of Research and Development

    The modernization of cultivation of

    conventional soybean (Glycine max) varieties

    in conditions of Poland

    Consortium:

Institute of Plant Protection in Poznan, Poznan University of Life

Sciences, Poznan University of Technology, Plant Breeding DANKO Ltd,

Company Top Farms Głubczyce, Agricultural Company Kietrz Ltd.

Project involves all the key issues of soybean

    cultivation and production in Poland

  • SOYBEAN IN POLAND

But the most important base for optimism is the

fact, that many farmers who, in the past two years

planted soybean, have found that soybean can be

    grown in Polish climatic conditions

    • Improving the method of inoculation by Bradyrhizobium japonicum

    • Study of the effect of plant density and nitrogen fertilization on the

    yield of soybean.

    • Test the effectiveness of herbicides in soybean plantations for

    protection against weeds

    • Determination of resistance of soybean varieties to major pests and

pathogens and developing of methods to protect against them

    • The analysis of the profitability of soybean cultivation in Poland in

    terms of a large farm

    • Developing a system for collection and management of soybean

    seeds coming from domestic producers

    • Promoting research results and promote the cultivation of
