Broome

After two years of planning,

SOWA extended invitations to

local schools in Broome to

participate in a Community

Sports-Link Ribbon Day. Held at

the Broome Recreation & Aquatic

Centre, the students experienced

the joy of a Law Enforcement

Torch Run as well as four sports

rotations.

Students from Roebuck Primary

School; St Mary’s Broome and

Broome Primary School all

enjoyed the comradery of sport,

competition and social

interaction, developing

grassroots skills in soccer,

basketball and tabloid sports.

The day was capped with students

interviewed by GWN; ABC Radio

and the Broome Echo newspaper.

Thanks Broome – we will be back!

Bunbury

With the support from Football

West; WACA; WADSA and SW

Institute of Technology, SOWA

hosted a highly successful CSL

Day in Bunbury. 97 students

enjoyed the reenactment of the

Olympic torch run followed by 7

sport rotations. The interactions

between local primary & high

school students resulted in a fun

and high energy day,

experiencing sport & activity.

Over the last term, nearly 100

students enjoyed the experience

of developing some skills in

soccer, thanks to the support from

Football West and SEDA. Eight

schools initially participated in the

skills morning as part of the

SOWA Community Sports-Link

Skills Day. The students then

continued the training back at

school over the term.

The conclusion of the Soccer

program was held at the NIB

stadium. All the schools returned

for a round robin of games,

playing on the home ground of

the Perth Glory.

The students were also fortunate

to meet Glory Women’s Captain,

Katie Gill who imparted some

wise words of advice to the

students about their pursuits in

Football.

Special Olympics Perth Metro North were represented by the

Joondalup Basketball program and the Mirrabooka SHS Basketball

program players at the recent Basketball WA “Everybody’s Game

Tournament” held at the Basketball WA stadium.

Our 20 players competed fiercely against opposing teams from

Westrise; ROADS and Rockingham. The afternoon of games was

an opportunity for players to increase self-confidence, improve on

skills and develop game tactics.

Thomas & Eric both made the ALL Star Team and Thomas also got

named Best Team Player – a well deserved accolade.

For the third year running, Special Olympics WA and

industry partner Football West united to deliver “Football

Week” for interested players with disabilities.

The week kicked off with the pinnacle of the Special

Olympics Community Sports-Link Soccer eight week

program. 61 students prepared throughout the term for a

tournament held at NIB Stadium with teams challenging for

the opportunity to compete on the home grounds of Perth

Glory.

The week concluded with unified matches between Special

Olympics, Paralympics and Equal Footingball players. With

fierce competition on the grounds, the games assisted

players competing at the Special Olympics Asia-Pacific

Games in Newcastle in December to prepare.
