STONEY CREEK begins east of the Red
Valley Parkway, including the area

and ends where Grimsby begins, at
Fifty Road/11th Road East. The area is
popular among families, young urban
professionals as well as seniors.
Outdoorsy types who still require
urban comforts will feel at home in
Stoney Creek. You can go for a hike
atop the World Biosphere Reserve,
looking out on what can only be
described as a panoramic vista, then
take a short drive down the parkway
to all of the shopping and cultural
options that Hamilton has to o� er.
Most of the original settlement took
place below “the Mountain” (aka the
Niagara Escarpment), where you’ll
fi nd lovely Victorian and Edwardian
enclaves, as well as more recent mid-
century neighbourhoods, all very well
maintained. But there’s been a recent
housing boom in the formerly rural
upper town, where new subdivisions
have grown in the last decade, with
many more on the horizon.
There are a lot of families in
Stoney Creek and a lot of elementary
schools, most of which are in the
more established part of town below
the escarpment. Up “the Mountain”
there are public and separate
elementary schools, as well as the
public High School and separate
Secondary School in nearby Hannon.
Stoney Creek has decent
public transit options thanks to its
amalgamation with Hamilton. Cyclists
will fi nd bike lanes and paths make
it easier to get around, but most
residents still drive to work and
for errands. Close proximity to the
QEW (via three interchanges), the
Red Valley Parkway, Highway 8, and
Highway 20 make it an excellent
choice for commuters.

Stoney Creek. You can go for a hike
atop the World Biosphere Reserve,
looking out on what can only be
described as a panoramic vista, then
take a short drive down the parkway
to all of the shopping and cultural
options that Hamilton has to o� er.
Most of the original settlement took
place below “the Mountain” (aka the
Niagara Escarpment), where you’ll
fi nd lovely Victorian and Edwardian
enclaves, as well as more recent mid-
century neighbourhoods, all very well
maintained. But there’s been a recent
housing boom in the formerly rural
upper town, where new subdivisions
have grown in the last decade, with
many more on the horizon.
There are a lot of families in
Stoney Creek and a lot of elementary
schools, most of which are in the
more established part of town below
the escarpment. Up “the Mountain”
there are public and separate
elementary schools, as well as the
public High School and separate
Secondary School in nearby Hannon.
Stoney Creek has decent
public transit options thanks to its
amalgamation with Hamilton. Cyclists
will fi nd bike lanes and paths make
it easier to get around, but most
residents still drive to work and
for errands. Close proximity to the
QEW (via three interchanges), the
Red Valley Parkway, Highway 8, and
Highway 20 make it an excellent
choice for commuters.

it’s important to have a good
relationship with your landlord.
Unfortunately, sometimes the needs
of the tenant confl ict with those
of the landlord and actions are
taken that are outside established
boundaries or laws.
If you feel you have been wronged
by your landlord, take your time
and go through the steps available
to you. Hopefully you can resolve
the issue easily and to everyone’s
satisfaction. If not, there are legal
avenues to pursue. Here are some
general guidelines for the process.
Check with your local Landlord and
Tenant Board for the specifi cs of
your area.
STEP 1. Talk to the landlord about
the issue. This can be in person, on
the phone or in an email. Give them
a chance to explain or rectify it.
There may be a misunderstanding or
extenuating circumstances.
Talking is more personal, using
email gives you a paper trail. If you
use email, be very clear about your
wording so there is no room for
misinterpretation. Consider asking
another person to read the email
before you send it.
STEP 2. If still unresolved, follow up
with another message. This time,
defi nitely put it in writing and refer
to your previous conversation/email,
including the date.
STEP 3. If there still continues to be
no resolution, check in with a legal
clinic or the landlord tenant tribunal.
Common FAQs and answers are
online. Most provinces and territories
o� er a board and call centre so that
you can get guidance on your issue
before pursuing litigation.
STEP 4. After becoming informed of
your rights, let the landlord know the
legal advice you’ve been given and
the action you plan to take should
the issue not be resolved within a
mutually agreed-upon time frame.
The time frame will depend on the
advice you’ve been given and the
nature of the issue. Heat and water
issues are higher priority than minor
repairs. Be prepared to be true to
your word regarding the action steps
you mention.
STEP 5. If still unresolved, fi le a
claim with the appropriate Board.
Note that this is a last resort, and it
may be costly in time, money and
aggravation.
STEP 6. Mediation or a hearing. As

THE THOUGHT OF A VACATION always sounds relaxing – until you actually
have to plan for it. That’s when you realize you have 5,000 things to worry
about before your feet hit the sand. I’m talking about those little details that
can ruing a trip – like misplacing your passport, wondering if you locked the
back door and of forgetting to ask your parents to feed the cat.
Then there’s the anxiety that comes with actually leaving. Those four walls
hold all your worldly positions, so it’s kind of normal that it’s totally a big deal.
Still, it’s getting cold, and you have earned a vacation. Don’t let fear stand
between you and the perfect tan. Just follow these simple steps for peace of
mind that your rental will still be standing when you return.
LEAVE YOUR HOME KEY WITH SOMEONE YOU TRUST This is one of
those moments where you realize how valuable a good relationship with
the neighbours can be. If you’re living in a secure building, you shouldn’t
really be letting your friends come and go while you are away, and it’s easier
to have someone as close as next door to check on your place. If you’re
comfortable with it, tell your neighbour the details of your trip and give them
access to your home in case of any emergencies.
TELL YOUR LANDLORD In your lease agreement there may be information
about vacation procedure (check it!). Either way, let your landlord know if
you will be away in case they need to get in touch with you to plan repairs or
gain access to your apartment or for any other emergencies.
CLEAN YOUR RENTAL Cleaning your rental seems pretty obvious, but
it requires a bit more attention before you leave on vacation. Don’t fool
yourself in believing that leaving a couple of dirty dishes on the counter
won’t make a di� erence. It will! Do a thorough cleaning. Clean out your
fridge of any perishables that wont be good once you come back home.
Most importantly, make sure you take out the trash. You don’t want to come
home to any surprising odours.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOUR DOG/CAT If you’re not bringing your
furry friends with you, plan to have someone take care of them. It’s a big
responsibility and you wouldn’t leave them with just anyone. Don’t leave this
important detail to the last second. If a pet-sitter, daily dog-walker or cat
companion isn’t a possibility, boarding may be the answer. Don’t leave pets
unattended for long stretches. Just don’t.
DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING To really ensure you won’t be worrying
about your home while on the beach, double check everything! Make a list if
you have tob and cross things o� once you checked them to make sure you
did in fact get them all done.
