The first question that comes to mind is, “How does the recession affect Southpointe as a business community?”

We’re excited to announce that Southpointe is a focal point for opportunities. In spite of plant, factory and business shrinkage nation-ally, Southpointe is growing. All you need to do is drive through Southpointe to see build-ings going up everywhere.

Thanks to our Marketing Director, Terry Caldwell, who recently completed a business census, we have the most accurate list of com-pany resources in the park. We were surprised to learn that 244 businesses and 6,000 employ-ees are working in Southpointe. Fifty or more of these companies are gas and oil industries that have moved in this year. And a plus: just 5 minutes away are new hotels, malls, factory outlets and the Meadows casino.

Our secret? Location, coupled with a well de-signed mixed use park and great government/

private business teamwork. Southpointe is a showcase for successful corporations with great access to the airport, minutes from down-town Pittsburgh, malls, theaters and restau-rants. The golf course, lakeside park setting, wide sidewalks and newly widened roadways are attractions for bringing in prestigious cor-porations.

In conclusion, even though we hear the ‘gloom and doom’ reports from CNN, FOX, etc., the growth opportunity is doubling in Southpointe. What do we do to increase our business oppor-tunity in Southpointe? Based on experience, networking using tools at the Southpointe Chamber and Marcellus Shale Chamber is a good start.

The upcoming tradeshow is the key to meeting the decision makers who can give you an op-portunity to increase sales growth.

For our 6 step marketing plan, call Don Hodor at 724-873-7777.

Southpointe has become a hot place to ‘jump start’ a new company. With the gas and oil boom, comes a spark of entrepreneurial spirit.

We interviewed Joe Barcelona and Therese Bell regarding their new company, Southpointe Energy Resource Group, LLC, (SERG) located in the Bailey Center at 125 Technolo-gy Drive. When asked why, Joe stated, “We saw the demand for local contract labor and our ability to source and train people to fill the void in this area, especially as it relates to the gas and oil industry. Although SERG is relatively new, we have over 20 years of combined experience, matching clients and applicants in a timely fashion. Based on selec-tion, we then train them accordingly and have them ready to go within 21 days at no cost to the client company.”

Just down the street from Consol Energy’s new building, we can see that the new re-gional headquarters for Range Resources is close to completion. Range is already in several buildings in Southpointe renting space while waiting for the new move-in date projected in November.

Range employs more than 300 Pennsylva-nians in the Southpointe offices and works with service companies and local contrac-tors that account for almost 5,000 full-time jobs in Washington County. (Not included in the report are Chesapeake Energy, Rice Energy, DPS Penn, and many others, all headquartered in Southpointe.)

Our area has experienced a multibillion-dollar impact from the natural gas industry. The Marcellus Shale, which many experts believe to be among the largest known natural gas fields in the world, represents a multi-generational opportunity that will positively transform the commonwealth’s future for 20 plus years. This is not a quick

in/out 5-year deal. Because of modern drilling technol-ogy in the Marcellus, Penn-sylvania could go from one of the largest importers of natural gas to a major na-tional exporter.

Pennsylvania has just be-gun to feel economic ben-efits of the natural gas in-dustry. Estimates show gas production will infuse more than $8 billion in economic impact and $800 million in state and local tax revenues in 2011 alone.

The economic impacts of the natural gas in-dustry are far reaching. Range Resources alone has reported to have paid out more than $1 billion to landowners and businesses in Washington County in the last two years.

The industry’s ripple effect will continue bringing new work to local service compa-nies, while generating expansion and reve-nue for local restaurants, hotels, real estate, apartments, auto/truck sales, and other mer-chants.

In addition, over 50% of the chamber mem-bers are not located in Southpointe but in nearby locations that can serve Southpointe companies.

Video Technology

The Southpointe Chamber has contracted with Southpointe Telecom Technology for Bill Griffin, videographer, to direct and produce videos of Southpointe and Marcel-lus Chamber news.

Recognizing the great potential to use streaming video as another tool for con-veying the ‘Southpointe News’ message, it was voted to make a major commitment to this old but recently growing media. “With the increase of internet bandwidth, video streaming has now become a front run-ner for laptops, iPads, Blackberry, iPhones and Android products,” explained Bill Griffin. “We committed to professional studio lighting, a Canon 1080 Hi Defini-tion Digital camera, a Bose sound system/mike mixer and Adobe editing software.” A bright picture, with clear sounding, well edited videos can make an impact on con-tent and overall professionalism.

Bill gained experience with Southpointe Telecom installing Internet Protocol (IP) Cameras and audio equipment for multi-family housing security and club house en-tertainment systems. “To produce a profes-sional video takes more than meets the eye. Buying a video camera at the department store isn’t enough. Professional lighting is required to remove ghostly shadows, audio mixers provides echo free clear sound and editing software is required to make the vid-eo clips transition smoothly”. Southpointe Telecom is available to record company training sessions, marketing and meeting agendas.

With the cost of printing, travel and train-ing, this is a great medium for quick com-munication to staff employees, customers and future clients by posting on web sites and Youtube for all to view. You can go to www.southpointe.net and click on ‘VIDEO TV News & Interviews’ to watch the first posting.

The Back Porch Restaurant is actively pursuing business at Southpointe even though it is a half hour drive. “We feel that many families get tired of the local restaurants and want someplace differ-ent to spend a quiet evening of dinner and atmosphere,” stated partner, Michelle Jones. The Back Porch is far from the chain res-taurant trap. The unique 1807 structure is near the Monongahela River off the Speers Exit on I-70 and well worth the drive. Fea-tured is an authentic basement bar tavern complete with nostalgic brick foundation, fireplace and beamed ceiling. For the out-door enthusiast, the back patio has great horticultural gardens complete with vines, statues and stone walls.

Added to this great atmosphere is a sur-prise to your taste buds, with offerings of

well prepared traditional classic American cuisine. Open a bottle of wine for a great start before perusing the eclectic menu. Start with the appetizer sampler special, Baby Back Ribs, Stuffed Mushroom Caps, Artichoke Franchise, and Flame Broiled Shrimp Cocktail. Then move on to paella - sea scallops, baby clams, langoustine, calamari, shrimp, mussels and chicken breast over rice in light tomatoes - all for only $23. In Pittsburgh, this price would easily be double. Finish with homemade desert baked in their own bakery. Oh, can’t make it there? Try the catering service at ‘2 Fine Caterers’ and they will deliver to your Southpointe office. Note: across the street is Speers Street Grill of-fering a more casual sandwich menu.

Southpointe Chamber President Dale Risker and his completely rebuilt 1946 aircraft will be flying over the 2011 Mylan Classic Golf Tournament for some candid still and video pictures of the event’s sec-ond year at the Southpointe Golf Club. Dale has been flying this vintage aircraft for over 20 years as a hobby. He also has a commercial rating for twin and instrument (IFR) corpo-rate aircraft. Dale manages, charters, sells and procures aircraft for local and regional corporations. When he’s not flying, Dale is operat-ing a soft serve franchise, Shake & Twist and World Wide Technical Services.

We asked Dale how he has time to be President of the Southpointe/Mar-cellus Chamber while keeping such a busy schedule. “The Chamber is a good outlet for having a great time and meeting new people every day. The chamber staff takes care of the routine administrative work so I have time to show up for the lunches and events.”

Pictured is Dale Risker, our Chamber president, with his 1946 Piper Cub, which will be will be flying over the My-lan Classic for some candid still and video pictures of the second year event.

“Dale doesn’t miss an event and he is always a phone call or web video conference away,” added Don Hodor, Chamber Ex-ecutive Director. Don, who also has a private pilot license, will be taking the pictures using two Canon high definition cam-eras.

Dale has been a pilot for over thirty years and his primary busi-ness, Worldwide Technical Services, provides aircraft manage-ment services. In addition, Dale owns and operates “The Origi-nal Shake & Twist” in McDonald, PA, which is a franchise with six locations in the Western Pennsylvania area, and growing along the East Coast. He also has a cattle farm in Bulger, PA. When asked how he juggles all his resposibilities, Dale smiled and commented, “Relying on the tremendous support of my family and a dedicated, reliable staff makes it possible for me to have the time to dedicate to the Chamber. I believe that the Chamber is an amazing tool for people in business and enjoy every moment of time spent on it. The Southpointe Chamber is different than most chambers in that we focus on business-to-business, direct contacts and our social events are geared towards that. I enjoy being a part of such a quality organiza-tion, and seeing other business people make contacts through our events, which are also a lot of fun. I am also very excited about the Marcellus Chamber, as the Southpointe/Washington area has become known as the Western PA energy capital. Our Marcellus Chamber has a lot to offer at a very pivotal time in the industry.”

Lifestyle Medicine – Treating the Cause - By Cynthia G. West, MD

Health, Wellness & Fitness

Wellness, healthy living, lifestyle – these are buzz-words in healthcare today. Do they all mean the same thing? No, they are not interchangeable. What do they mean? More impor-tantly, what do they mean to you?

Wellness is in vogue but often misunderstood. Sev-eral decades ago, wellness meant preventing disease or injury rather than treating results of ill-ness or injury. For example, immunizations, cancer screenings, and seatbelts are types of wellness as prevention. More recently, well-ness still means prevention, but it can also mean health education or even using com-plimentary or alternative therapies designed to achieve good health and well being. As a result, we now speak of wellness practi-tioners, wellness clinics, wellness programs and so on.

Healthy living suggests that someone is trying to make choices that will result in

good health. In this sense, it includes wellness mea-sures, but it does not insure that someone is yet in good health. Healthy living is the positive end of a spectrum known as lifestyle.

Lifestyle is how we choose to live on a daily basis—the food we eat, the exercise we do, the way we cope with stress. Eighty percent of chronic disease is caused by

poor lifestyle. Obesity is the most notable lifestyle related disease but hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and certain can-cers are also related to lifestyle. Numerous studies link the effect of lifestyle to diseases that “run in families”. Your family’s medi-cal history is a predictor of conditions for which you are at risk. Consider your own lifestyle and you will have a good idea of your chance of getting those same diseases.

Lifestyle medicine is a new medical spe-cialty that provides patients with the “how-to” that enables them to acquire the skills

needed to modify their lifestyle as a way to treat many chronic diseases. Cynthia West, M.D. has established WellnesSaves - Center for Lifestyle Medicine to provide this care. Dr. West says,“Lifestyle medicine gives pa-tients the tools to change the way they live in ways that allow the changes to become part of everyday life. Lifestyle medicine is the first line of treatment of most chronic diseases. Successful changes in a person’s lifestyle can often decrease the need for medications and even surgery. There is overwhelming evidence and support from the medical community that this basic form of medical intervention can help us achieve better health and a higher quality of life.”

Dr. West and her team of professionals, in-cluding a registered dietitian, a social work-er, and an exercise physiologist work as ad-vocates to assist each patient in setting and meeting goals in order to improve physical and emotional wellbeing.

WellnesSaves – Center of Lifestyle Medi-cine is located at 125 Technology Dr., Suite 104. Contact the team at 724-916-4529 to arrange an appointment.

The Southpointe Chamber of Commerce announced the startup of the ‘Marcellus Sh ale Chamber of Commerce’ (www.marcel-lusshalechamber.com), Don Hodor, Execu-tive Director/founder, in a breakfast meet-ing at the Southpointe Golf Club. Hodor founded the Southpointe Chamber in 1997 and has extensive experience as past presi-dent of the Washington County Chamber and Eighty Four, PA Chamber. Hodor stat-ed, “As a 15 year resident of Southpointe, I have seen the area grow each year with goals exceeding expectations. We are now the 12th largest chamber (published in Pitts-burgh Business Times) in the Pittsburgh re-gion with growth of over 20% each year.” 244 companies are in Southpointe with 60 new gas/oil companies that moved in over the last 6 months.

The Marcellus Chamber Mission: Pro-mote profitable business-to-business rela-tionships in the Marcellus Shale Gas & Oil Industry.

Our location in Southpointe, (coined by media as the Marcellus Shale Capital) and membership demographics make this move a perfect transition for the promotion of lo-cal businesses in the area. The chamber had conducted a survey and received a 90% fa-vorable response to businesses wanting to ‘connect’ with the new industry.

Hodor announced that the focus is on net-working local businesses into the gas & oil business. “We will stay clear of environ-mental and tax issues leaving that challenge to the other groups,” Hodor stated. Jesse White spoke on those issues at the meeting and noted that the chamber will champion business-to-business networking and leave

the other issues with White and related groups.

The chamber board commissioned Terry Caldwell as Director of Marketing. He has gone door-to-door taking a comprehensive inventory of each company. “We now have the only up to date, accurate listing of all companies in Southpointe. This data base along with advertisements by local busi-nesses will become an elite source. Plans are to register companies on the www.Mar-cellusshalechamber.com web site with web links to each company

Meetings are posted on the web site event calendar at www.southpointechamber.com. The Southpointe and Marcellus Shale Chamber offices are in the Bailey Center at 125 Technology Drive in Southpointe. 724-873-7777.

Wider roads, traffic lights, and new sidewalks to be completed in November

Southpointe Construction

We have all driven through the one-mile construction area on Southpointe Boule-vard, wondering when the road widening to four lanes will be finished. We contacted Bill Sember, Director of Operations for the Washington County Authority. This is the agency responsible in part for the infrastruc-ture upgrade. Bill reported in an exclusive interview with Southpointe Magazine that the originally stated deadline of November is very realistic. This project has several improvements that go beyond just road wid-ening.

The project began at the intersection of Technology Drive and Southpointe Blvd., and continues past the Iceoplex, Accutrex and Auma Actuator to the bridge. Traffic lights will be installed at four intersections, and are to be programmed to work with the

new stacking lanes, making left turns quick-er and safer when coming and leaving of-fices. Traffic lights will be added at Town Center Way, Consol Drive, as well as North and South Technology Drive intersections.

Technology Drive has two intersections on Southpointe Blvd., being the Bailey Center corner and Community Bank corner. The sidewalk will be extended from the Iceoplex to the bridge making it a full walkway end to end in the park. The construction involves high focus on engineering details. Water runoff drains are moved. Utilities including fiber cable, communications, sewage, water and even the Directory Sign were moved.

Don Hodor, Executive Director of the Southpointe Chamber, stated, “It is esti-mated that over 7,000 cars and trucks pass

through these intersections daily. This number could reach 12,000 in the next few years. Presently, there are 244 companies in Southpointe with 55 buildings.”

All existing buildings in the park are nearly filled to capacity, including the new Range Resources and Embassy Park buildings. However, there is still ample space for more new buildings to be developed. When asked how he arrived at the numbers, Don said, “Terry Caldwell, our Chamber Marketing Director, went door-to-door, taking a census of the companies, buildings, and addresses. The list appears in the centerfold of South-pointe Magazine, and all keyed to the map. For updates, go to www.southpointemag.com.

In today’s challenging times, nonprofit organizations, universities, hospitals and other service providers are in need of qualified people to assist with day-to-day operations, public awareness and fundraising events.

If you have special skills that can be offered to one of these entities — bookkeeping, secretarial, customer service, public speaking or writing skills, for example — you may want to offer your services.

Here are 10 reasons why you should serve as a volunteer in your community:

1. You can help raise awareness of a great cause. You may know of someone whose life is affected by cancer, leukemia, heart disease, alcohol abuse or another health condition. Or perhaps you know someone in the arts, education or child advocacy. Groups dealing with these issues often can use a hand. Raising awareness of a particular cause can help people in need as it promotes services available in our area.

2. You can build character. Take some time to speak to a cancer survivor, a heart transplant recipient or someone who has received the benefit of social services or education. You will find yourself asking questions and wanting to be involved in some way. You can impact someone else’s life through volunteering. In turn, you will feel a character-building sense of goodwill, community service and accomplishment.

3. You can strengthen your network. A great way to network is to contact a nonprofit organization in the area and ask if you can donate your time to help out with upcoming events. A great many people work behind the scenes as volunteers for nonprofit groups. Volunteering will create opportunities to meet professionals from the area who share your interest in supporting a great organization or a good cause.

4. You can build your resume. Volunteering is a resume building-block, whether you list it under “volunteer activities” or “job-related activities.” Company executives like to see community service on your resume. Your volunteer activities also may lead to interesting conversation during an interview.

5. You can gain work experience. Working as a volunteer gives you an opportunity to learn new skills or enhance skills that you already possess. Many of the functions a volunteer performs require the same skills an employer needs.

6. You can hunt for a job. When you volunteer, you are “putting yourself out there” with professionals in a variety of fields. This is an excellent time to ask about employment opportunities, whether they are full-time, seasonal or part-time jobs.

7. You can learn something new about your community. Volunteers gain a unique perspective on the community by connecting with individuals from all walks of life. It can be eye-opening to learn about services in our area and how we can help one another.

8. You can make a personal commitment. So many of us on our journey through life don’t make time to connect with someone or something important to us. Volunteering creates an opportunity to make a personal commitment and see it through.

9. You can educate yourself. Getting involved through volunteering requires taking the time to educate yourself about your surroundings, your community and the people around you. Becoming an advocate for a cause compels you to learn more about what life has to offer.

10. You can do the right thing. Volunteers either “pay it forward” or give back to the community — an important life lesson for us all to learn. In giving your time or your abilities, you are enriching the lives of others and making our small corner of the world a better place to work, live and play.
