Southminster Presbyterian Church of Springfield, Missouri, is called by God to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, to minister in love to the needs of members of the congregation

and residents of the community, and to promote peace and justice in the world.

Technically, July 5th will be my last official Sunday as your half-time pastor. It seems like three months has just whizzed by. I will have to say that it has been a great experience serving Southminster. I have gotten to know a lot of you through our times at Table Talk, our committee meetings and just hanging around with you. The building of these relationships has been a real gift to me. As a result, I have agreed to do pulpit supply for a few Sundays in July and August.

Hopefully, by then, a new pastor will be on the way.

Having been here for three months, I have noticed something that has not changed since I attended here as a child. This church continues to be a vital part of the community. It is evident in all you do. You are not content to just let people come to you. You are active in reaching out and touching

others with the love of Christ. Keep up the good work.

I treasure these past months and look forward to being with you on Sundays in the future knowing that God has something extraordinary planned for you. May you be blessed as you have blessed

others.

Prayer is the Best Thing - James 5:13-18 THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Answer me when I call you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from

my distress, be merciful to me and hear my prayer. Psalm 4:1 (NIV)

When someone is very sick, dying, or in a hopeless situation, I often hear myself and others say,

“All we can do is pray.” “All we can do.” That’s like saying, “All I had for dinner was prime rib”

or “All I got for my birthday was a new car.”

Prayer is not the thing that is left after everything else has been tried. It is the best and most

important thing we can do for those whose situations are hopeless. I have seen the power of

prayer at work many times. We should remember that prayer is not ALL that we can do, but it is

the FIRST and most important thing that we can do.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you for answering our prayers. Help us to trust you even in

the most hopeless of situations. Amen.

SOUTHMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Stated Session Meeting

June 14, 2015

Session met in the Southard Room, 6:30 p.m. The Moderator, Reverend Mary Wright, opened the meeting

with a prayer.

A quorum was present and the Agenda was approved as distributed by the Clerk.

The minutes of the Session Meeting of May 10, 2015 were approved as distributed.

Treasurer’s Report:

Income for May: $16,538.07 YTD: $58,482.78 Expenses for May: $8,632.47 YTD: $49,412.83

Rich asked Mike to check for a water leak since our water bill was higher than it ought to be. Mike agreed. Rich also pointed out that our “FAITH GIVING” was much lower than expected through the first 5 months. He explained that this budget amount is based on members who have pledged in the past, but did not pledge this year and members who never or seldom pledge, but give consistently. We agreed that this needs to be monitored as the year progresses. The Treasurer’s Report was approved for filing. Pastor Susan reported that she had attended 5 Table Talks, made 1 pastoral home visit, and spent some time developing the case study for tonight’s Core Value Index (CVI) follow-up. Susan then spent about an hour going over the case study and helping us to better understand the CVI and how we can use our CVI knowledge to work together more effectively. Pastor Susan also requested a leave June 23 to 30. The request was approved. Pastor Susan also informed us of a called Presbytery meeting on July 7, 2015 at Woodland Heights Presbyterian Church. Nora Burgess agreed to be our commissioner and was approved unanimously. The Clerk of Session reported that the minutes and the register of Southminster were approved by the Presbytery on June 14. This review covered from May 2014 to June 2015.

Committee Reports:

Administration and Personnel Todd Morriss

All input regarding Tara Albert was positive so A&P plans to go ahead with the pay increase at the end of

June. Action approve rate of $13.00 starting 29 June. Passed

Christian Education Dotty Thomas

Dotty reported that Christian Ed. Was going to take Michael Lyons and a friend to see Jonah in Branson.

Additional discussion related to Christian Ed: Westminster’s Vacation Bible School will be 6:30pm to

8:30pm June 22 through June 26. Mary Kay Glunt at Woodland Heights is trying to organize a monthly youth

“get together” for youth attending smaller churches that don’t have a large number of youth. She is suggesting

the second Sunday each month. Susan will forward the info to Dotty.

Congregational Care Lou Howard

No report

Mission Jane Bogue

Jane reported that we served 85 families and 198 people at Crosslines in May.

Session Highlights (continued)

Nomination Mike Lyons

No Report

PNC Dotty Thomas

Dotty alerted Session that PNC was to the point that they would be spending some of the money for travel

and meals that was approved by Session at the April meeting.

Property Mike Lyons

Per Rich Marsh’s request Mike will look into the increased water usage at the church.

Stewardship Ted Scott

The “Achieving Clarity of Purpose” PowerPoint has been reviewed by two or three members and we

recommend that nothing be done to follow up with this until a called pastor is in place.

Worship Nora Burgess

Nora pointed out possible problems when the PNC is reviewing credentials for pastors and Nora is looking for

supply pastors. We agreed that better communication needs to be maintained between the Worship chair

and the PNC.

Organization Reports:

Peacemaking: Ted put in a plug for Big Tent and said the price goes up in a week.

Presbyterian Women: no report

Seekers: Mike reported that they made over $323.00 at the rummage sale and also made a big

contribution of left over merchandise to the DAV.

Other Business:

Kathy Morriss has agreed to be the commissioner to Presbytery in August. Todd (back in April) distributed the Policy Manual to all Committee Chairs and asked them to review their committee descriptions and report back. Property and Stewardship reported that no changes were needed. Others are still working. Todd had Tara make changes to the bylaws per Susan’s notes. Susan and Mary agreed that they should be considered clerical changes and do not require congregational approval. After much discussion the session voted not to meet in July and August unless something requires us to meet in which case Todd will either do an email vote or schedule a meeting possibly right after Sunday worship.

Next meeting To Be Determined

Mary Wright closed the meeting with prayer.

And God said “let there be light, and

there was light.” Gen. 1:3

Imagine your day ending when the sun goes down. Our ancestors lived through this during the early years of our nation but many parts of the world still must rely upon daylight for their entire routines. They work, read, worship, play, travel, get water and shop during the day. Nothing, or not much occurs during the darkest part of the day. Could you rely upon only daylight for all you do? Toward that end, I have recently been to Solar Under the Sun Solar School to learn about solar installations. My brother, Gary also attended and became proficient in the technical aspects of solar installations while I learned to organize and arrange the visit portions of the trips. Much of rural Honduras lives without access to clean water however, an organization called Olancho Aid is helping the people in a portion of the Olancho district to have clean water. Olancho Aid installs their own systems as they have people who have been trained at Living Waters for the World Clean Water University. Still, there are areas that do not have any electricity so my brother and I will be helping to install a solar system to operate the clean water system that will be installed in a community there that has no access to electricity. This is the first of at least three trips we will make to this community. You will be reading this while Gary and I are in a little village 2 ½ hours northeast of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. Please keep my brother Gary and I in your prayers while we travel there, establish all the necessary parameters of the solar system and travel home.

July - one of our hottest months here in the

Ozarks. I am referring to temperature, although

I could very well be referring to activities in our

communities. Summer is the time when

communities have special events going on

from festivals to fairs. Churches have VBS,

traveling day camps, resident camps and ice

cream socials. It is the time of the year to get

out and build relationships.

July is also a good time for vacations. I know

many people, including myself, who are taking

off some time in July to enjoy travel, family and

friends. It can also be a time to celebrate our

connections as Presbyterians. For instance,

my best friend from seminary is coming for a

visit with his family in July. It has been over a

year since we have seen them and we are so

looking forward to their visit. I am sure other

people in JCP are gathering with their

Presbyterian friends to go places and do fun

things. In the midst of all this activity, I pray

that God will give us all opportunities to show

the love of Christ to others and begin new and

wonderful relationships through that love. May

you all have a wonderful, relational, July.
