Once On Chunuk Bair

Honouring the centenary of the ANZAC’s and the Gallipoli campaign, Jonathan Tucker directs Maurice Shadbolt’s classic New Zealand play, Once on Chunuk Bair.

Having spent nearly four months on the steep hillside above their landing site of ANZAC Cove, 760 soldiers of the Wellington Battalion fought their way to the top of Gallipoli Peninsula in the finest heroic action of the whole tragic episode. Chunuk Bair was the hilltop captured and is now a name revered in ANZAC military history.

Immerse yourself in the action of these young New Zealand men who discovered their national identity and immortality on the summit of Chunuk Bair one hundred years ago.

The Pianist

theatre

5THOMAS MONCKTON AND CIRCO AEREO

Thomas Monckton (Moving Stationery) presents a wordless, solo contemporary circus piece centred on, in, under and around the masterpiece that is the grand piano.

Hilarious incidents and mishaps occur as the poised pianist himself takes on the grandest of all instruments in attempts to salvage his somewhat unsalvageable dignity. What starts off as a highbrow concert spirals into a spectacularly amusing catastrophe.

The Pianist is, simply put, a superb performance... he charms the spectators mere seconds into the show and bombs them with side-splitting comedy and moments of astonishment through all of the sixty minutes.DEMARI (FINLAND)

Antonio Sacre and Regina CarpenterExperience the magic that is storytelling by two international masters of the genre.

Antonio Sacre, a favourite performer at over fifty festivals world-wide, draws from an extensive repertoire that includes folk tales, myths and legends from around the world, focusing on Spanish-speaking countries, especially Mexico.

Regina Carpenter’s tales celebrate the glorious and gut-wrenching lives of four generations of Carpenters raised on the Saint Lawrence River, North America.

Underwater tea parties, drowning lessons and drives to the dump give voice to generations of family life with an undercurrent.

A BOY WONDER

theatre

7SHARU LOVES HATS

A tale of friendship, heroism and adventure,A Boy Wonder is an original kiwi comedy created and performed by acclaimed New Zealand performer, Ryan Richards. The one-man show presents a variety of characters in an epic battle to save the local legend that is Jimmy’s Pies.

...a very sharp, well-timed and slick comedy hour. The writing is clean, interesting, and funny and rounds off brilliantly... THEATREVIEW Sometimes all you need is an hour of silliness and laughter, and that’s what A Boy Wonder provides in spades... THE LUMIERE READER

IN ABSeNTIA

Intimate and universal, tragic and surreally outrageous, In Absentia is a hauntingly evocative experience. Life-sized puppets, automata, shadow puppetry and theatrical magic combine beautifully to create a moving and thought-provoking glimpse into the world of dementia. The reality of the illness for a mother and son is highlighted and brought into unique focus through the unreal world of Tablo’s award-winning, exquisitely crafted puppetry.

The sheer creativity is both startling and enchanting. Alzheimer’s and senile dementia might seem less than appealing themes to employ for a piece of theatrical beauty. I can only hope my own passing is so sublime.JONATHAN W. MARSHALL, THEATREVIEW
