SUU Women Look To Busy Week

CEDAR CITY, Utah, Feb. 23 – After taking a two-week respite from competition Southern Utah University’s women’s golf team jumps back in withboth feet next week when the Thunderbirds are scheduled to compete in two tournaments as well as facing a pair of opponents in a modifiedStableford scoring match.

The Thunderbirds begin the week at South Dakota State’s Jackrabbit Invitational, which will be contested at the par-71, 6,945-yard Primm ValleyLakes Course. The team will then meet Northern Iowa and Creighton at the par 72, 6,269-yard Painted Desert Golf Club in Las Vegas. SUU thenwraps up the week at the BYU at Entrada Classic at the par 72, 7,085-yard Entrada Golf Club in St. George, Utah.

Scheduled to compete for the Thunderbirds are juniors Sadie Palmer and Kacy Buckner, sophomore Jamie Coking and freshman Kaohi Loo. Oneplayer from a group that includes senior Morgan Kerber, sophomore Brittany Edwards and freshman Rose Pelletier will fill out the SUU lineup with onecompeting as an individual at the Jackrabbit and Entrada Classic. The entire team will compete against UNI and Creighton.

The 14-team field at the Jackrabbit Invite will provied a bit of a preview of the Summit League women’s championship, which will be held atPrimm Valley in April, as seven Summit League teams are entered, including SUU, Oakland, UMKC, North Dakota State, Oral Roberts, Western Illinoisand host South Dakota State. Also in the field are Bucknell, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Iowa, South Dakota, Drake and North Dakota.

The field at the Entrada Classic includes SUU, Colorado State, Illinois, Kansas State, New Mexico State, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, SMU, UTSan Antonio, Texas State, Tulsa, Weber State, Wisconsin, Wyoming and host BYU.

Last Year at the Jackrabbit Invitational: Jamie Coking shot 23 over par 239 to finish in a tie for 49th place and lead Southern Utah’s women toa 13th place . Sadie Palmer, who struggled with rounds of 83 and 88 on Monday, shot 73 on Tuesday to move up 15 spots on the scoreboard andfinish second among Thunderbirds at 244 and in 61st place. Kacy Buckner also shot her best round of the tournament, 79, in the final round to finishthird among Thunderbirds. Buckner shot 245 to finish all alone in 65th place. Rounding out SUU’s entry Morgan Kerber finished 74th at 254 whileMikayla Williamson was 82nd at 267. Southern Utah’s Brittany Edwards, playing as an individual, finished tied with Kerber in 74th at 254. TheThunderbirds finished at 980, well off the pace of team champion Oral Roberts, which shot 28-over par 892 to edge Missouri State by two strokes andDrake by four.

Last Year at the BYU at Entrada Classic: SUU finished 12th after a final-round 345 to finishing 12 stokes ahead of 13th-place Weber State,which finished at 1,002. The Thunderbirds opened with rounds of 316 and 329. Sadie Palmer led the way for SUU with a 25th-place finish aftershooting 234. Kacy Buckner was second among T-Birds in 57th place at 250, followed by Morgan Kerber in 63rd at 254, Jamie Coking in 66th at 257and Brittany Edwards in 72nd at 265. SUU’s Mikayla Williamson, playing as an individual, finished 70th at 264.

The Coach: Richard Church (Utah ‘89) is in his 11th season as head golf coach and his 16th on the staff at Southern Utah. Prior to taking overthe program from former Coach John Evans, Church spent four seasons as the Thunderbirds’ assistant coach. During his tenure on the SUU staff,Church has coached five academic all-Americans, one Mid-Continent Conference medalist, two Mid-Con runner-ups and the University’s first NCAApost-season competitor in golf. He has also seen the team finish second in the league four times since SUU began competing in the Mid-Con in 1997-98.

Last Time Out: SUU finished in 10th place after shooting 333 in the final round of the 18-team Red Rocks Invitational. SUU shot 664 for thetournament, 45 shots off the pace of team champ Northern Arizona at the par 72, 6,084-yard Oak Creek Country Club. Sadie Palmer led the way forSUU, with a 16th-place finish after shooting 81 on Saturday to finish at 14-over par 158. Brittany Edwards finished second among Thunderbirds, in43rd place at 23-over par 167 (82-85), while Kaohi Loo was 60th (84-86, 170), Jamie Copking was 74th (92-81, 173) and Kacy Buckner finished 77th(88-86, 174). SUU’s Morgan Kerber, playing as an individual, finished 43rd at 167 (82-85) the top score posted by an individual, while Rose Pelletierwas 90th (93-88, 181).
