By Erin Zeltner

In St. George, Christmas doesn’t truly begin until thousands of people flood ‘Olde London Towne’ to peruse holiday gifts and take in period-theater at the St. George Dickens’ Festival. The magic of the holidays becomes nearly tangible each year as hundreds of costumed actors help create the ambience.

Everyone recalls the story of Scrooge and his remarkable character transformation that occurs one magical and extended Christmas Eve, but what most people don’t realize is that Charles Dickens was not only a great storyteller, but a great facilitator for child labor laws and a motivator of societal equality.

As a child, Dickens was forced to leave school to work in a factory after his father was thrown into a debtor’s prison. His time spent working as a minor influenced his later writings, including the best-selling novel of all time: A Tale of Two Cities. Higher-society circles were influenced to open their hearts to the downtrodden of society with stories such as Oliver Twist and David Copperfield.

A Christmas Carol did not escape his social commentary, and it is with that spirit of service that we take our cue to enrich the Christmas spirit and extend holiday cheer, uplifting feelings, and glad spirits at the festival.

Every year since its first 1981 appearance, the Dickens’ Festival has gained in popularity and deepened in authenticity. Visitors will find plenty of mini-shops to

peruse and purchase Christmas gifts of all varieties, including hand-sculpted dolls, walking sticks, clothing, jewelry, sweets, candles, gourds and much more.

Attendees can also interact with 19th-century period street-theater characters and observe concise stage versions of Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol each evening at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Father Christmas himself will be available for photo opportunities throughout the festival. Another major attraction this year will be a $1000 prize to be given away to one lucky attendee - an exciting Christmas bonus, indeed!

Come immerse yourself in the spirit of Christmas past, present, and future at the St. George Dickens’ Festival. As a reformed Scrooge exclaimed from his window, “A merry Christmas to everybody! A happy New Year to all the world!”
