Dr. Hawkins is a professor of clinical orthopedicsurgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and founder of the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas.

MISSIONThe Southern Orthopaedic Association (SOA)was founded in 1983 solely to develop andfoster scientific medicine in the specialty oforthopaedic surgery. Meetings of the Associa-tion are dedicated to disseminating current clini-cal, research, and practice innovations inorthopaedic medicine.

TARGET AUDIENCEThis program is designed to meet the needs ofphysicians in orthopaedic surgery and sportsmedicine. Information presented may also be ofinterest to allied healthcare professionals (athle-tic trainers, physical therapists, chiropractors)working in an orthopaedic or sports medicinesetting or caring for the athletically active indivi-dual with acute or chronic musculoskeletal ail-ments.

One of the highlights of theSOA SEC Program is a special

presentation honoring the outstanding SECAthletic Orthopaedic Team of the Year, chosenby the SEC Head Athletic Trainers. We arepleased to announced Dr. Joe P. Bramhall asthe recipient of this distinguished award.

Dr. Bramhall completed medical school in1985 and completed his Orthopaedic SurgeryResidency in Fort Worth. He then served underJames Andrews, MD in Birmingham, AL duringhis fellowship training in Orthopaedic SportsMedicine, before returning to Texas in 1991.

Following completion of his fellowship in 1991,Dr. Bramhall returned to Bryan/College Station,Texas to begin his practice specializing inorthopaedic surgery. In addition to privatepractice, Dr. Bramhall has been the TeamPhysician and Orthopaedic Surgeon for the

Texas A&M Department of Athletics since1991, and he has served as the Director ofSports Medicine at Texas A&M University since2001.

Dr. Bramhall was recognized as an honorarymember by the Southwest Athletic TrainersAssociation at their 50th Annual Meeting in2004. In May 2013, he was inducted into theTexas High School Football Hall of Fame inWaco, Texas. He was recognized for his contri-butions over the past 22 years working with the15 surrounding high schools, along with localhigh schools A&M Consolidated High Schooland Bryan High School. He is the 2014-2015President of the Texas Society of Sports Medi-cine.

Congratulations to Joe P. Bramhall, MD, whowill receive the 2018-2019 award at the meet-ing. In addition, Texas A & M University AthleticTraining Staff will receive a check for $1000.00to be used for student athletic trainer educa-tion, courtesy of DJO Global Orthopedics, whohas sponsored this stipend since the awardsinception in 2003.

designed to provide an update on the latesttreatment techniques and therapeutic rehabilita-tion strategies in the evaluation and treatment ofthe most common musculoskeletal disorders inthe athletically active patient.

OBJECTIVESThrough a combination of lectures, panel dis-cussions, and audience participation, partici-pants will have the opportunity to exchangeinformation relative to current and emergingclinical concerns about the musculoskeletalproblems seen in the upper and lower extremity.At the conclusion of the meeting, participantsshould be able to:

EXPLAIN current controversies in treat-ment of shoulder, elbow, knee, hip, andspine disorders commonly seen in theathletically active.

EVALUATE injury patterns and preven-tion strategies of upper and lower extre-mity problems in the athletic population.

ANALYZE challenges encountered withrehabilitation of the shoulder, elbow, andknee in the athlete, as well as the olderathletically active weekend warrior.

SELECT appropriate management op-tions for the most commonly seen sportsspecific injuries; shoulder instability, rota-tor cuff tears, elbow ligament injuries; aswell as knee injuries (ligament, menisci,articular cartilage).

DIAGNOSE and manage shoulder impin-gement, labral tears, rotator cuff tears,elbow instability as well as knee instabili-ty with associated meniscal and articularcartilage pathology.

RECOGNIZE and treat medical condi-tions commonly seen in athletes, anddiscuss cases related to concussion,sports dermatology, nutrition, injury pre-vention, and psychological issues.

Dr. Hawkins relocated from Canada to Vail, Col-orado in 1990, where he and Dr. J. RichardSteadman formed the Steadman Hawkins Clin-ic. In 2004, he opened the Steadman HawkinsClinic of the Carolinas (which now has fivelocations with 27 physicians) where he is aProgram Director for the Fellowship Programand Chairman of the Hawkins Foundation.

Dr. Hawkins graduated from the University ofWestern Ontario, where he later became Profes-sor of Orthopaedics and Director of the Residen-cy Program. He is fellowship-trained in the knee,shoulder and spine and was an ABC TravelingFellow in Great Britain in 1979. He is a foundingmember and Past-President of the AmericanShoulder and Elbow Surgeons, Past-Presidentof the Orthopaedic Learning Center and Canadi-

an Academy of Sports Medicine, former Directorof the Sports Medicine Council of Canada, andTeam Physician in the 1988 Olympics. He wasNational Medical Director for the US DisabledSki Team and Team Physician for the1998/1999 Super Bowl Champion Denver Bron-cos, as well as the Colorado Rockies. He cur-rently serves as Team Physician for the SCSchool for the Deaf and the Blind.

Dr. Hawkins has published over 200 articles andnine textbooks, and has presented over 800features at national/international meetings. He isa Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery atthe University of SC, adjunct professor in theDepartment of Bioengineering at Clemson Uni-versity and was a clinical professor at the Univer-sities of CO and TX Southwestern. He is on theEditorial Boards of several orthopaedic journals.

Dr. Hawkins has trained more than 200 fellowsworldwide in shoulder and sports medicine withmany now serving in leadership positionsacross the country and in multiple societies.
