Young Explorer ProgramKids of all ages love our Young Explorer program, where they’re grouped with travelers their own age for fun and educational activities while adults attend faculty lectures. They’ll enjoy thought- provoking discussions and mind-bending games that fuel creativity, all while building new friendships. Our Young Explorer leaders are all recent Stanford grads and Stanford Sierra Camp counselors and are pros at understanding and adapting to the personalities and interests of each young explorer—which means that everyone has a great time.

Faculty LeaderArnetha F. Ball, PhD, ’91, who joined the Stanford faculty in 1999, is the Charles E. Ducommun Endowed Professor, emerita, and teaches courses in curriculum studies, teacher education, and educational linguis-tics. Her most recent research investigates the role of generativity and successful paradigms, principles and practices in preparing teachers for diversity across national boundaries in countries that serve large numbers of historically marginalized students, such as the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Prior to Stanford, Dr. Ball taught in pre-school, elementa-ry and secondary classrooms for more than 25 years and founded the Children’s Creative Workshop, an early childhood education center that specialized in provid-ing premiere educational experiences for students from diverse backgrounds. She is the author/co-author of seven books and a frequent contributor to academic journals. During our program, she will discuss such topics as the similarities and differences

between U.S. and South Africa educational systems and how they are impacted by the rich diversity in languages, peoples and ideas that we will be experiencing while we’re in Southern Africa. As someone who has always been fascinated by how people communicate, Dr. Ball will share her interests in multilin-gualism and why it seems easier for young people to learn new languages in this multilingual society. Dr. Ball will also lecture on “Journaling Our Way Through Southern Africa: Using writing as a Pedagogical Tool for Deep Thinking” as we are processing new ideas, customs and species. Based on her research findings, Dr. Ball will also share “The Big 5 Reasons Why Writing Is Considered The Most Important Literacy.” And in her lecture that includes our young travelers, Dr. Ball will talk about “The ABC’s of Apartheid.”

JohannesburgArrive in Johannesburg on Sunday, transfer to our hotel and gather for an orientation and welcome reception.

J U N E 1 7 & 1 8

Chobe National Park, BotswanaDiscover the wonders of Chobe National Park, from partaking in activities and a lecture at our lodge to going on a land-based game drive or a boat cruise on the Chobe River in search of the park’s giraffes, baboons, impalas and elephants. Take part in a festive boma dinner, a traditional outdoor BBQ buffet whose roots stem from the African bush, and enjoy live music and dancing.

J U N E 1 9 & 2 0

Victoria Falls, ZambiaSpend two days at spectacular Victoria Falls. One of the world’s greatest natural wonders, Victoria Falls drops 360 feet into the Zambezi Gorge. An average of almost two million cubic feet of water cascades every minute over the edge of the falls, which stretch an amazing one mile in width. The constant mist, nicknamed “the smoke that thunders,” creates an environment simulating a tropical rain forest and is visible from the winding footpath along the rim. Enjoy a sun-set cruise and some leisure time for optional

activities. Relax at our luxurious hotel, set on the banks of the Zambezi River.

J U N E 2 1 T O 2 3

Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, South AfricaGo on an escorted, open-vehicle game drive in search of Africa’s “Big Five”—the lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo, all of which dwell in the reserve. Take the opportunity to observe the reserve’s nocturnal inhabitants on a memorable nighttime safari. Enjoy the lodge’s fun educational activities, as well as its pools, viewing decks and spa.

J U N E 2 4 T O 2 6

Cape TownRide a cable car to the summit of Table Mountain to take in the sweeping views of the area. Go on an excursion to the scenic Cape Peninsula, traveling along the Atlantic seaboard via Chap-man’s Peak Drive, considered one of the world’s most spectacular marine drives, to the Cape of Good Hope, stopping en route to view the colo-ny of African penguins that hang out at Boulders Beach. Explore a sobering chapter in the history of South Africa, traveling by boat to Robben Island and touring the maximum security prison where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Also visit the District Six Museum back in Cape Town.

The Stanford Differencefor Young ExplorersNot your ordinary kids’ campYou’re taking your family on the trip of a lifetime and, of course, you want to be right beside your kids to witness their wonder and amazement. Rest assured you’ll spend most of the trip together as a family. On occasion, kids-only adventures, tours and meals allow the adults time for more in-depth touring and discussions. Our pro-fessional tour manager and team of Young Explorer leaders (at least one for every 10 kids) join you every step of the way to make your family trip a breeze.

Dedicated Young Explorer leadersOur savvy Young Explorer leaders are razor-sharp recent Stanford grads and former Stanford Sierra Camp counselors. They’ll captivate the children with hands-on educational activities while the adults attend lectures. And they bring the whole family together for activities such as Family Olympics, Trivia Night or Disco Bingo.

Access to Stanford scholars Have a child or grandchild who is keenly interested in the faculty leader’s area of expertise? He or she is welcome to attend the lectures with you. On most trips, our faculty leaders design and deliver a lecture specifically for young explorers.
