SE COG NEWS

If you noticed under the title, I have been pressed back into COG service again by our new Southeast Area Director, Al Norcross. I thought after two stints as an Assistant Area Director, and one as Southeast Area Director, I had done my part to help the Southeast Leadership Team. I am comfortable in my present posi-tion as the C-10 Tech Editor of the Concourier and hosting this ride to eat each year. At Biketoberfest, in Daytona Beach, Al approached me to work with him, as he was going to run for the SE-AD position. He described his vision for the South-east area and how he thought I could be of help. How could I say no? Besides, I’ve been a house guest of him and his wife, Nancy, so many times that I’m sure he fig-ured I owed him for his hospitality. It’s going to be fun working with my old friend, and the other AAD’s, to make our region the best that it can be. Yeah, I joined for the bike but I really stay for the people.

I decided to change the location of this year’s “Last Blast Before… “ to the Dixie Crossroads restaurant, in Titusville, FL, right across the Indian River from the Kennedy Space Center where they recently had a real “Last Blast Before…..” Past year’s attendance numbers were straining previous locations. roads is very popular with Florida riders as they can handle large crowds, have plenty of parking, and most importantly, great food. Riders that made the trip, from Minnesota (Brian Snowberg), Georgia (Jerry Holland and others), and Florida made for the highest attendance of any Last Blast. Thanks to all who toughed it out and braved sunny, 70’s weather to make the trip……

Riders started arriving about 10AM at the Crossroads. I had arranged for a few of my hench-men to make sure all riders were welcomed and they were introduced to others. There is nothing worse for a rider attending their 1st event, or any of our get togethers, not feeling welcome. Hopefully we accom-plished that. I was especially gratified to see so many Concours 14 owners. Thanks for your support.

I had a few opening remarks to get out of the way before introducing Al to get things underway. He took care of some Southeast COG business and then outlined his 2012 schedule of events. He then introduced Ken Ford, COG Executive Director. Ken brought everyone up to date on all things COG from a National perspective. Ken also presented a plaque to outgoing Southeast Area Director, Vic Salisbury, in appreciation for his many years of service to the Club. Vic continues as our COG, Industry Liaison and an Assistant Area Director. Thank you, Vic.

At the end of the meal, our 50/50 drawing was held. Door prizes were donated by the following COG Industry Members in attendance:

Shouldabeen Engineering, Steve Sefsick: Con-cours C-10 over flow tube setup.

Brian Snowberg: Concours C-10 heat shields

Buck Sport Touring, Larry Buck: C-14 Tailbrights

I would be remiss if I did not mention that we are losing one of our best ambassadors of COG, and a tireless worker at many of our events. Many of you know Jo Poole and her blue Concours. Others have attended her annual “Tax Relief” rides to Cedar Key, FL in April. Jo is another example of an individ-ual COG member taking it upon themself to plan, organize, and lead an event for the benefit and fun of others. Jo is that smiling face asking you to contrib-ute some of your hard earned dollars to COG and have a chance to win a door prize, or ½ of the money collected. The lady is no poser. She is a fellow Ironbutt Association member; SHE CAN RIDE guys and gals. Jo, all of us that have come to know you, will miss you. We wish you all the best in your new home in Washington State. Thank you for all you have done for us. Stay in touch.

After lunch everyone adjourned to the park-ing lot for more” bench racing” and to wish each oth-er Merry Christmas’, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year. Y’all come back for #10, hear?

* Special Thank You to Cesar for most of the photos in this article.

Welcome to the New Year and the first edi-tion of the SE Newsletter 2012, We have a pretty am-bitious ride schedule for this year, and I hope you can make as many rides as possible. We're striving to have geographical diversity with all of our multiple day rides, and will work hard to make costs for at-tending the events as low as possible. A large part of the cost for any rally is the AMA sanctioning and at-tendant cost of insurance. We, the COG Board of Di-rectors, are working on solutions to help our mem-bers in this regard, and hope our efforts will result in decreased rally expenses for us all.

We have a new team of web design/content COG members in Tom Snavely & Ron Denney, both of whom are working to update and refresh our SE web pages. Please join me in welcoming them to the leadership team and their work on behalf of SE COG. They have some good ideas on how to make thing easier to access and how we could have a great new look to our web sites. Thanks guys.

I'll be with our AAD's next week via confer-ence call to establish a line of communication be-tween all of us to better serve the members of the SE, If you have any questions, ideas or concerns, please contact your AAD and communicate that infor-mation to them before that time. We'll work hard to make our area the best it can be, but rely on your input to make that happen. Get involved.....

February brings us Daytona Bike Week, and the COG functions of the Chili Fest on Friday night & the breakfast on Saturday morning. Please check the details on the SE calendar, and especially let the Polito's know if you will be with us for the Chili Fest. They're great hosts, the chili is good, and the loca-tion is in the heartbeat of Daytona action. There is registration for this event, but you can just show up at breakfast to socialize with us.

Glad to have you along for the ride. The 2012 SE COG ride that is happening now in your state.

“Ironbutt” Al Norcross, SE AD

On Saturday, January 7, a good number of COGgers braved the threat of rain to meet in the parking lot of the Glancy Rehabilitation Center in Duluth, GA. We met to visit one of our own who was injured in a very serious motorcycle accident last year. Robert Elliott, Southeast AAD, was struck by a drunk driver and is still recovering from extensive injuries.

Jim Culp, Tom Sills, Lane Harrison, Eddie Minter, Kurt Brown, Jennifer Simons, and some oth-ers, visited with Robert. He has a good prognosis and was in good spirits. Elliott and his wife Paige live in Cornelia, GA. and Robert is on Facebook as "Robert J. Elliot." He can access Facebook just fine, but typing is a little more difficult at this time, so keep the encouraging words coming and if you can, do go by and see him.

Cards and/or letters can be sent to:

NOTE from your editor. To submit an article it helps if you save the file in a MS Word 97 format. Don’t indent for a paragraph, just put an extra line be-tween paragraphs. Send any pictures as an attach-ment, preferably as a “jpg”. Also, remember there are 2 spaces after a period or any punctuaton mark. Please spell and grammer check your articles. I know all this may seem trivial to you, but it saves a lot of time. While I used to be a teacher, I’m retired, and will not checking your paper. :-)
