As a group enters a new year, it might be a good time to reflect on the group, its purpose, and its participa-tion in the unity of Alcoholics Anony-mous. A terrific pamphlet, available in your Intergroup Office is “The A.A. Group….Where It All Begins” with ex-tracts referenced in this article. This pamphlet is “designed as a handy in-formation tool and suggested guide for an A.A. group – not to tell anyone what to do.”

Bill W. had a lot of thoughts on “sug-gestions” over the years, particularly as it relates to the Traditions. He stat-ed in a November 1949 Grapevine ar-ticle that nothing in A.A. is a “must.” He said “you are perfectly free to disregard them if you choose. In that respect they are a lot like the laws of

nature. Nobody’s going to stop you from breaking them. But just as surely as the sun rises in the east and flow-ers bloom in the spring, nature has a way of making you pay.” A.A. learned from its mistakes and developed the Traditions. Groups learn and grow, or wither and die, based on their adher-ence to traditions and their group’s involvement in the unity of A.A. out-side of just their group and their meeting(s).

“The A.A. Group” pamphlet states that “in the simplest form, any two or three alcoholics gathered together for sobriety may call themselves an A.A. group, provided that, as a group, they have no other affiliation.” Again, it is suggested that A.A. groups reg-ister at G.S.O., as well as with their

area, district and intergroup. In that respect, they become part of the greater whole, for the unity of A.A. Out of the 169 Groups in the current Where & When in South Palm Beach County, approximately half attend our monthly business meetings.

At a recent Area Quarterly meeting it was stated that a “group who doesn’t get involved in A.A. service out-side their group are only getting the crumbs of A.A.” The pamphlet states that “the entire structure of A.A. de-pends upon the participation and conscience of the individual groups, and how each of these groups con-ducts its affairs has a ripple effect on A.A. everywhere. Thus, we are ever individually conscious of our respon-sibility for our own sobriety and, as a group, for carrying the A.A. message to the suffering alcoholic who reaches out to us for help... A.A. is shaped by the collective voice of its local groups and their representatives…..The bet-ter informed the (group) members, the stronger and more cohesive the group – and the greater the assur-ance that when a newcomer reaches out for help, the hand of A.A. will al-ways be there.” The pamphlet also

suggests that “for a group to keep going, all kinds of jobs must be done. It is through the combined efforts and ongoing commitment of group members that, among other things, continuing contact is sustained with the rest of A.A. – locally, through the Intergroup, district and General Ser-vice Committee; and nationally and internationally, through the General Service Office in New York.”

Active groups, participating in the unity of A.A., do not just simply have meetings. After insuring the continu-ance of their group with a prudent reserve to meet their rent and other

fixed monthly obligations, it is sug-gested that groups also have: A.A. conference approved literature on hand, not only for the newcomer, but also for group members; Grapevine literature; a list of local group meet-ings (Where & Whens); a group con-science on how they welcome and help newcomers; and, groups should conduct inventories from time to time.

Any two or three alcoholics gathered can call themselves an A.A. group and hold a meeting. But if that’s all you do….hold a meeting... are you really a group? There are a significant num-ber of other suggested responsibili-ties for the group to thrive, grow and become part of the greater whole of A.A. It is suggested that groups pick up a copy of the pamphlet “The A.A. group….Where it All Begins” if they do not have a copy already. The

pamphlet includes questions groups ask their members when they take a group inventory (pg. 35-36) includ-ing:• What is the basic purpose of the group?• What more can the group do to

carry the message?• Do new members stick with us, or

does the turnover seem excessive? If so, why?

• Does the group do its fair sharetoward participating in the purpose of A.A. – as it relates to our Three Legacies of Recovery, Unity and

Service?• How is the group fulfilling its

responsibilities to the Seventh Tradition?

It Happened in January & FebruaryJanuary 1939 – NY A.A. member Jim B., an unapologetic atheist, suggest-ed the phrases “God as we under-stand Him” and “Power greater than ourselves” be added to the Steps and basis text. Bill W. later wrote “those expressions,” as we so well know to-day, “have proved lifesavers for many an alcoholic.” Jim’s story, “The Vicious Cycle,” begins on page 219 in the Big Book (4th edition).

January 1961 – Dr. Carl Jung respond-ed to a letter Bill wrote regarding Roland H., whose experience is dis-cussed in the Big Book (pp. 26-27). Roland was a drunk who could not stay sober, and he traveled to Europe to be treated by Dr. Jung twice. Ro-land, never a member of A.A., was

involved with the Oxford Group and helped Ebby T. Throughout the winter of 1934, Ebby T. shared his experience on becoming sober with Bill W. (pp. 9-12). Jung wrote in his letter to Bill: “I had no news from Roland H. any-more and often wondered what has been his fate. Our conversation which has adequately reported to you had an aspect which he did not know… His craving for alcohol was the equivalent on a low level of a spiritual thirst for our being for wholeness, expressed in medieval language: the union with God… You see, alcohol in Latin is ‘spiri-tus’ and you use the same word for the highest level of religious experi-ence as well as for the most deprav-ing poison. The helpful formula there is: spiritus contra spiritum.”

January 24, 1971 – Bill died in Miami Beach. In 1990, Life Magazine named Bill among the 100 most important figures of the 20th century.

February 1940 – John D. Rockefeller, Jr. held a dinner for A.A. with host Nelson Rockefeller, which produced favorable publicity for A.A.. This was also the beginning of the formation of the thoughts of self-support, corpo-rate poverty and ultimately the Sev-enth Tradition.

Special THANK YOUs to the groups who supported and participatedin our 2019-2020 Alcathon this past holiday season!

And, a very special “Thank You” to the Delray Central House Foundation for providing all the supplies and decorations for our Holiday Alcathon! We have received $1,410, which is our portion of the 7th Tradition income from the Alcathon A.A. meetings.

Thank you, Delray Central House, for hosting our Alcathon again this year, and for assisting all our groups with the food set ups and clean ups; for providing a safe and clean room for our meetings;

and for “keeping the lights on” for our 72-hour Alcathon events! We could not have done this without your help and the use of your special A.A. meeting hall.

Thank you ALL and Happy New Year!

INTERGROUP BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES

8

Chair: Elizabeth B. opened the meeting at 7pm with a moment of silence followed by the Serenity Prayer. Chair called for approval of last month’s minutes with an addition to include the 12-step Women’s committee report. Tamara S. reported the Women’s 12-step volun-teer list has been increased from 15 to 27 volunteers. Two teams have been formed. One group will cover the 1st through the 15th and the second group will handle the rest of the month. The top 5 in each group will rotate to the bottom of the list each month to spread out the call volume. The new system will be put in place on Nov 1st. Training has been scheduled for November 9th at 11am at the Intergroup Office. Bari W. made the motion to approve the September 25, 2019 minutes to include 12-step Women’s committee report. Motion was seconded and passed.

“The simplicity of the A.A. program teaches me that happiness isn’t

something I can ‘demand.’ It comes upon me quietly, while I serve others. In offering my hand to the newcomer
