Welcome...to the latest edition of our local community newsletter. The last twelve months has been busy for South Hook LNG, with several more milestones having been reached, including our fifth Anniversary as an operational Terminal. Emergency preparedness plans were tested and exercised, as well as many more visitors having been welcomed to the Terminal for the first time. We have also been involved in a variety of different community initiatives, celebrated the successes of Our People in their own fundraising and volunteering efforts, whilst also recognising the first two members of the South Hook LNG Family, to reach ten years with the Company.

In September, we hosted the first South Hook LNG Family Day, welcoming almost 300 of our workers and their families to site. Page 11 of this newsletter shares with you some of the Family Day activities and photographs. It was great to see so many families relaxing and enjoying each other’s company, as they chatted in the glorious warm sunshine, making the most of probably the best weather of the entire summer!

We hope you enjoy catching up with our latest news and we wish you and your families a healthy and happy 2016.

Celebrating the Waterway - the South Hook LNG Calendar for 2016

Our Achievements

As one of Europe’s largest LNG terminals, South Hook LNG is proud to be a part of a Port that is so important to UK energy security, and to be contributing to the rich and colourful history of the famed Milford Haven Waterway.

In celebrating the important role that the Waterway continues to play in providing employment, energy and pleasure to people across our County and further afield, we invited Pembrokeshire school children to be imaginative and creative, helping to develop the South Hook LNG calendar for 2016.

To help the children who were interested in entering this year’s competition, we linked with our friends at Milford Haven Museum, allowing children to explore the history of the Waterway through an interactive journey. Children saw exhibitions about the Waterway’s role in the development of the whale oil industry, its importance during times of war, the famed fishing industry and the advent of the modern oil and gas age, to name but a few.

Once again, we were delighted to have received so many wonderful, imaginative entries from the schools; pictures ranging from fish, whales and forts, to ferries, tall ships and LNG carriers. Representatives of Milford Haven Museum and the Port of Milford Haven helped to select the winning entries, with a prize-giving event planned early in the New Year.

The annual colouring competition for local schools has been a successful event since 2009 and has encouraged hundreds of school children across the County to participate, with South Hook LNG receiving many inspirational pieces of art from across the age groups and with many children trying their hand at painting for the first time. The themes have been popular and have also prompted some worthwhile discussions in class, building on the awareness and education of the children.

See page 12 for the winning entries.

Contributing to the Haven Waterway’s

illustrious history: The inaugural

LNG ship, Q Flex ‘Tembek’ arrived six years ago in

March 2009 with the Terminal’s

commissioning cargo. The Terminal

celebrated full commercial

operations a year later, in April 2010.

During the Terminal’s short history, South Hook LNG has achieved some significant milestones.

Our story started in 2002 when subsidiaries of Qatar Petroleum and Exxon Mobil entered into a Joint Venture Agreement to deliver the South Hook LNG Terminal, with the investment costing some £1 billion. In excess of 2,000 people were involved in the construction of the Terminal and in 2007 the fifth and final LNG tank was completed, followed by the completion of the Terminal’s Central Control Building in 2008.

The following year was a proud year for everyone at South Hook LNG, as we celebrated the first gas being sent out

from the Terminal into the National Gas Transmission System to homes, businesses and industry across the UK. In May 2009, we also welcomed Her Majesty the Queen and His Highness the Emir of Qatar to site for the official inauguration of the Terminal.

2015 has also been a busy year for us, having celebrated five years of commercial operations in April. During the first five years of operation, South Hook LNG has received over 400 vessels and regasified around three quarters of the total LNG imported into the UK. For one day in August, South Hook LNG was responsible for regasifying just over 30% of the UK’s gas requirements.

Our journey so far…

Over the course of 2015, we have welcomed a number of guests to the Terminal to view the facility. Some of these visits are shared with you here.Pembrokeshire County Council representatives visit the Terminal

In October, we welcomed representatives from Pembrokeshire County Council to the Terminal, as an opportunity for familiarisation with South Hook LNG’s operations and community activities. Guests met with members of South Hook LNG’s Senior Management Team, and were taken on a tour of the facility.

The Authority’s Chairman, Cllr Wynne Evans was joined by Deputy Leader Cllr Keith Lewis, Chief Executive Officer Ian Westley and Director of Development, Dr Steven Jones.

Shell Shipping and Nakilat welcomed to Site

During November, we proudly hosted a visit from the External Relations team of Shell Trading and Shipping Company (STASCo) who operate and crew many of the ships discharging at the Terminal. Additionally, we were also joined by colleagues from the PR department of Nakilat, a Qatari LNG transport company that provides an essential transportation link in the State of Qatar’s LNG supply chain.

Both organisations were welcomed as a part of an action to familiarise themselves with day-to-

day Terminal operations. Whilst visiting, both Shell and Nakilat engaged in discussions that highlighted the vital importance of collaborative efforts between South Hook LNG, Shell and Nakilat in helping all organisations better understand each other’s business models.

Learning opportunity for a group of Swansea University students

A group of 16 Chemical Engineering students from Swansea University were invited to the Terminal in November to give them an insight into potential career opportunities within the LNG industry. The group were given a tour of the Terminal’s process area, as well as the Central Control Building, where all operational activities are monitored.

Towards the end of the tour, the group learnt about the supply chain - the process that extracts, liquefies and transports the gas from Qatar in the Middle East to our Terminal in Pembrokeshire; here the LNG is turned back into a gas and enters the National Transmission System, reaching homes, industry and businesses across the UK.

The South Hook LNG Health & Safety CommitteeWe are committed to continually strengthening safety performance at the Terminal and part of that process is encouraging conversations on safety and health at work.

We have a Health & Safety Committee (HSC), which meets on a quarterly basis, most recently in September, giving nominated representatives from across the business the opportunity to review and discuss matters relating to health & safety at work.

Public Information Zone

The South Hook LNG Terminal is a top tier COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) regulated site and under these regulations we have an obligation to provide information to residents and businesses within a specified area, known as the Public Information Zone (PIZ). This includes providing details of the necessary actions to take in the unlikely event of an emergency at our site. As a courtesy, our closest residents who live just outside the PIZ also receive information relating to safety.

As part of our quarterly safety communications, we test two alarms. One is the COMAH Alarm, which will sound in the event of an emergency, and the other is the All Clear Alarm. The COMAH Alarm has a distinctive on/off sound, an intermittent tone. The All Clear Alarm is a single continuous tone that you will hear once the incident is over.

These two alarms are tested quarterly on the first Tuesday in January, April, July and October and are tested at 2.30pm and again at 7.30pm. As part of our ongoing communications with residents, you will receive a fridge magnet communicating quarterly COMAH Alarm test dates in 2016.

Safety Culture at South Hook LNG Safety Culture at South Hook LNG

Our regular feature aims to give you an idea of some of the valuable work that our people are involved in at the Terminal. In this edition, we share with you some of the daily activities carried out by a member of our maintenance team.

A Day in the Life of Paul Jonker - Instrumentation & Control Foreman

Paul’s role supports operations at the Terminal, by undertaking a system of routine planned and preventative maintenance which includes periodically testing and calibrating a wide range of instrumentation.

Paul gives an account of the typical day to day activities that his role might entail.

“Once priority tasks have been assigned during the morning meeting, I build work packs consisting of appropriate work permits, parts to be ordered, as well as identifying how to assist colleagues in Operations. I then assign work directions to specific personnel at the Terminal to complete the assigned tasks.

Ahead of work commencing, I lead and discuss safety related topics in the form of tool box talks with the teams; I then spend a large proportion of my day carrying out spot checks, overseeing the work teams, to ensure that all calibration data is in accordance with set tolerances and procedures.

Critical daily activities involve me updating the Terminal’s maintenance management system by confirming operations and entering technical findings for each job, in order to maintain the equipment history. I also populate the end of day report, updating operational teams with regards the status of all work conducted that day.

Some of my day will be spent carrying out administrative duties such as reviewing technical documents and ensuring all calibration equipment is certified to use.”

Nature Conservation Area Almost one third of the South Hook LNG Terminal site is allocated

as a Nature Conservation Area (NCA), forming part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. We work closely with

the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority (PCNPA) to help protect this area, ensuring it is undisturbed and managed for the benefit of nature conservation. Human access is limited and controlled to encourage priority species to inhabit and thrive.

As part of the on-going monitoring of the NCA, we invite expert stakeholders to survey the area and in September

2015, we were pleased to learn that the Bumblebee Conservation Trust had identified a Section 42 Priority

Species: a Brown banded carder bee (Bombus humilis) (pictured). This species is generally associated with good quality

habitat. The Section 42 list forms part of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 and contains 1,150 species and 65 habitats requiring special protection.

Residents living closer to the South Hook LNG Terminal may also be able to hear the site and building alarms that are tested every week, at the same time. These alarms are for personnel working at the Terminal only and you do not need to take any action if you hear them. It is only the COMAH Alarm that requires the attention and action of people living within the PIZ.

Site Alarms: Tested every Thursday at approximately 12.00 noon

Building Fire Alarms: Tested every Friday morning

Emergency preparedness exerciseAs part of the South Hook LNG emergency preparedness and under the COMAH regulations, the Terminal completes a regular programme of emergency response exercises. A full scale exercise in conjunction with the emergency services and other external agencies was successfully completed in November 2015.

Safety moment: safety at nightIn the dark winter evenings being seen on the roads is important. Here are some tips to keep you safe and make you visible to other road users:

• Avoid dark coloured clothing. Light colours reflect more light, although reflective strips are more effective

• Wear a reflective safety vest or use reflective tape on your clothes

• Adding LED safety lights will increase your visibility

• Carry a small torch or wear a head torch in order to help you see potential hazards more clearly

• If you are cycling at night make sure you have both front and rear lights, again a head torch can be useful

• Make sure children are aware of the dangers of not being seen on the roads and the importance of being especially careful of traffic at night

Our Community Liaison GroupOur Community Liaison Group (CLG) is an important forum in which we are able to share important information with our neighbours, as well as for our neighbours to be able to feedback relevant information to us from the wider community.

The CLG meets quarterly and is made up of elected representatives of the community who meet with South Hook LNG Senior Management to share their views. Topics discussed include relevant updates on recent, current and future activity at the Terminal.

At the last meeting in October 2015, members of the CLG were reminded that South Hook LNG would be holding a large scale COMAH exercise at the end of November 2015, including representation from the emergency services and other external agencies. Members were also informed that the annual posting to local residents of the South Hook LNG fridge magnet detailing 2016 quarterly COMAH Alarm test dates would be completed before the end of the year.

Copies of the minutes of each meeting are held by your representative for onward communication with communities.

Your representatives and members of the current South Hook LNG CLG are:

• Mayor of Milford Haven and Central ward representative Councillor Stephen Joseph

• St Ishmaels County Councillor Councillor Reg Owens

• Hubberston ward representative Councillor Alun Byrne

• Herbrandston Community Council representative Councillor Henry Lloyd

• Angle Community Council Councillor Danny Richards

South Hook LNG in the community South Hook LNG in the community

The South Hook LNG and Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services (PAVS) community partnership was established to develop and support the communities close to the

South Hook LNG Terminal and has been running successfully for a year, alongside the South Hook LNG Staff Community Donations programme.

South Hook LNG endeavours to participate and contribute to projects and initiatives that support and promote the areas of Safety, Environment, Education and Wellbeing; projects that aim to have a long-term, sustainable benefit to the people of Pembrokeshire.

Over the next few pages of this Newsletter we aim to give you a flavour of some of the community initiatives that the partnership with PAVS has supported, as well as some of the commendable achievements by our staff volunteers in the community in their own time.

The County Show a success for groups

We were proud to be able to support the Community Zone at the Pembrokeshire County Show this year which was coordinated by PAVS, as part of the company’s community engagement activities. Over twenty different voluntary and community groups had a presence; many of the organisations involved had never had the chance to be at the show before and welcomed the opportunity to advertise their projects and activities, with many promoting new services, raising awareness, or encouraging people to volunteer. Over the 3 days more than 2,000 visitors engaged with the different groups and projects.

The Community Zone was opened (along with its neighbour, the Learning Zone) on the first morning of the Show by Councillor Keith Lewis (Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities and the Economy) who invited stall holders, and some special guests, to enjoy a networking breakfast.

Wheelchair users get access to Angle Beach

From April 2016, an all-terrain vehicle will be available to hire at West Angle Bay, giving wheelchair users the chance to explore a Pembrokeshire beach. This follows the introduction of specially adapted wheelchairs at several beaches across the County.

The new wheelchair has been bought by the Pembrokeshire Access Group with funding from our own community fund at South Hook LNG, the Port of Milford Haven and Bluestone Resorts. It is also supported by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.

“This new wheelchair is a wonderful example of how organisations in Pembrokeshire can work together for the benefit of all our residents,” said Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Transportation.

“We are always looking for new ways to improve access to our facilities and services but all too often wheelchair users miss out because of access problems,” he said.

“We hope that this new wheelchair will enable people to explore the sands

and wonderful coastal scenery at Angle.”

Safety first at ‘Crucial Crew’

More than 1,400 children from 53 primary schools in Pembrokeshire visited the ‘Crucial Crew’ annual event at the Withybush Showground in November. Year 6 pupils, aged ten and eleven, took part in a series of different workshops throughout the day with local police, fire and ambulance officers, as well as coastguards, lifeguards, road safety officers and many others.

The children were also given advice on issues such as food safety, keeping safe online, cyber-bullying and much more.

The two-week event is co-ordinated by Pembrokeshire County Council’s Road Safety Team and sponsored by South Hook LNG, Powersafe and Simon Safety.

Councillor Wynne Evans, Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, praised the initiative which is now in its 22nd year. “Crucial Crew is a great event which allows us to give Year 6 children a range of important safety messages as they start to become more independent,” he said.

Each pupil was given a bag sponsored by Simon Safety with items donated by South Hook LNG and participating agencies, including an educational booklet, hi-visibility vests, torches and reflectors.

Our People volunteering in the community

Since its launch in May 2014, the Staff Community Engagement Programme has supported a number of individuals in their community volunteering and fundraising activities and below are just a few of the successes achieved in 2015.

Cleaning up the Local Beach

On a glorious day in July, eleven South Hook LNG staff volunteers and some little helpers donned hi-viz vests and joined forces to clean-up litter from Gelliswick Beach, one of the local beaches.

Keeping the beaches clean from litter is essential, not just to help protect our environment, but also to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the community using them. Thanks to Keep Wales Tidy for their support.

Adam Bayjoo - Warehouse StoremanTy Hafan Hospice

Following months of hard training, Adam competed as part of a team in the Wales 3 Peaks Challenge, in aid of Ty Hafan Hospice, a charity that offers support to life-limited children, young people and their families, helping them to make the most of the time they have left together.

Ty Hafan Hospice is an organisation that is really close to Adam’s heart; a charity that has been instrumental in his life over the last ten years. On a personal level, Adam enjoyed the challenge and found it rewarding

and enjoyable, despite the wind, rain and mist! Adam said, “Undertaking this challenge was an honour and crossing the finishing line at Pen-y-Fan with my teammates who have children at Ty-Hafan, made me feel so proud, and the memories will be with me forever.” Adam would like to thank everyone who supported him and South Hook LNG who contributed £300 to the charity.

Kevin Morgan - Process SupervisorUnder Elevens Fishguard and Goodwick Rugby Football Club

As Assistant Rugby Coach, whatever the weather, you will find Kevin Morgan training with the Under 11s Fishguard and Goodwick Football Club and last season the team came a fantastic second in the Pembrokshire Under 11’s Cup Final. “South Hook LNG has been very generous supporting me through the staff community participation programme”, said Kevin, “and the money will go towards a scrum machine for the junior section. Everyone at the Club is very grateful for the company’s support.”

Christian Watson - SHEMS CoordinatorNarberth Rugby Football Club

Christian coaches the Under 7’s at the Narberth Rugby Football Club and the 2014-15 season culminated in the young team, not only playing at the Parc-y-Scarlets ground in Llanelli, but also becoming the County champions and meeting some of the Welsh team.

“Getting involved with coaching kids was not something I had ever thought of doing, but I can honestly say I have enjoyed introducing kids to a great sport and now understand what it’s like to be part of a team, club and community”, enthused Christian. “All season the team has played in a team kit which has been handed down to us, but thanks to South Hook LNG, the

Pembrokeshire Care Society - Haverfordwest

PCS is a registered charity and exists to support homeless persons with advice and advocacy enabling them to secure safe and affordable accommodation.

One of the volunteers who spent the day helping to decorate the offices at the premises of the PCS said, “The day provided a real insight into just some of the achievements of this organisation in assisting the homeless in our County.”

match funding has enabled the purchase of a new team kit for the forthcoming 2015-16 season. The kids can’t wait to play in it!”

Julian Owens - Finance & Administration Manager Dinghy instructing at Pembrokeshire Yacht Club

From the age of 12, Julian has enjoyed sailing and boating, having learnt from a number of very experienced racers. Now qualified as a senior dinghy instructor and race coach for the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), he spends his free time volunteering at the Pembrokeshire Yacht Club, instructing children from the age of 8 on how to sail independently in all-weather conditions. Julian said, “It’s great to watch the juniors compete locally and at national events and to see them become safe, competent and fast sailors, beating me in the occasional race!” Julian continued, “The Club would like to thank South Hook LNG for the match funding which has helped finance instructor training and replacement equipment.”

Jeremy Tee - CCR OperatorCamrose Football Club

Jeremy took over the mantle of coach for the Under 9’s at the Camrose Football Club when the former coach moved on and the team was in danger of folding. “I found the football coaching to be a steep learning curve at first, but the Club has been very supportive. I am now coaching the Under 15’s team.” He continued, “Our greatest achievement to date is winning the Pembrokeshire Under 13 Cup, finishing third in the league last season. On behalf of all the Camrose players, I would like to thank South Hook LNG for their generosity over the years and helping us to purchase playing kit and training equipment.”

Community Day Sept 2015 Hands on help from South Hook LNGTeams of staff volunteers from South Hook LNG spent a day in the community, assisting with a range of tasks that have given a boost to the fantastic voluntary work happening in Pembrokeshire. From decorating the offices of Pembrokeshire Care Society (PSC), to beach cleaning with Neptunes Army of Rubbish Cleaners (NARC) and assisting the ‘Slashpond Boardwalk’ at Broad Haven, South Hook LNG is proud to have been able to assist such valuable projects.

Three teams of South Hook LNG volunteers arrived on the day prepared and kitted out with pruning shears, rakes, and paint brushes, bin bags and heavy duty gloves and spent a memorable and productive day working alongside members of the community groups.

Local charity recycles South Hook LNG furniture

Pembrokeshire FRAME is a local charity which is environmentally focussed and provides a supportive working environment for individuals with disabilities, including mental ill health, learning difficulties and those socially disadvantaged and/or excluded.

The organisation also receives old furniture and, where possible, recycles the items by giving them a new lease of life. In March 2015, we invited FRAME to come to site and collect a number of unused pieces of furniture for them to recycle and sell on in their shop.

Neptunes Army of Rubbish Cleaners

While the impacts of litter washed up or left on our shoreline can easily be seen, the same cannot be said for marine litter that is below the surface of the ocean. NARC is a voluntary group of divers with a passion for keeping the underwater environment in Pembrokeshire as pristine as it should be. Since its inception in 2005, the group has carried out over 100 underwater clean-ups and has retrieved all sorts of things from the local coastal seabed; from fishing line and glass bottles to shopping trolleys and even a kitchen sink!

Due to adverse weather conditions at sea on the Community Day, the NARC volunteers were unable to dive. It was decided that, on this occasion, our volunteers and the NARC team would conduct a beach clean at Druidston.

A NARC diver during a previous underwater clean-up.

Support the Boardwalk - Broad Haven

The ‘Slashpond Boardwalk’ in Broad Haven is a hidden tranquil spot very close to the beach and provides a beautiful nature trail for members of the public to use, ideal for bird and wildlife spotting. Support the Boardwalk, an independent group of volunteers, are committed to helping protect, conserve and enhance the Boardwalk, including carrying out practical work on footpaths, signposting and landscaping.

The South Hook LNG volunteers spent a very physical, but enjoyable, day building compost bins, cutting back trees to help protect the paths and clearing the meadow to help enhance the picnic area for families to enjoy.

Our People South Hook LNG and the local economy

On a beautiful sunny afternoon in September, we hosted a South Hook LNG Family Day giving everybody at the Terminal the opportunity to welcome members of their family who may have an interest in seeing the facility. The event was held in order to thank South Hook LNG families for the support given to the business during the first five years of operation.

As well as giving families the chance to learn more about the Terminal, there was entertainment for children, including a magician, bouncy castles, pet’s corner (with a real live tarantula and giant land snail!) as well as a craft marquee. A photographer was on hand, allowing families the opportunity to take home some memorable photos of the day.

A dedicated area showcasing the short history of the Company and the achievements to date was complimented

by tours of the Terminal, allowing guests to see the facility first hand.

Both Dyfed Powys Police and Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service gave their support to the event, taking some time during the afternoon to educate families as to the relationship between South Hook LNG and the front-line response services. The teams proved to be the greatest attraction of the afternoon - for children and adults alike!

The day was a great success. We had some of the best weather of the summer, allowing families the time to sit and relax outside, enjoying lunch in the glorious sunshine.

Safety Recognition Awards

Our Safety Recognition awards recognise individuals across the Company for their contributions to continually improving all aspects of health and safety at the Terminal.

Two recognitions include Karl Rozblat and Paul Hotchkiss, Process Operators, who were both commended for the commitment displayed in completing the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO) assessor’s qualification. Congratulations!
