For this reason we are changing the distribution method for some of our readers. In the southern 25% of our area some readers have their copy delivered through their door. By January 2010

this will have ceased. In its place we will be offering pick-up from local independent stores, which is clearly much better for these retailers as they may gain new customers. It also

guarantees that every copy is a wanted copy. We will also favour independent shops over supermarkets generally.

I hope you will agree with us that this is a fairer solution.

There are over 55,000 households in Mid Sussex and although we continue to print 19,000 copies, for many of you it is by no means certain that your household will find one every month, as every month we run out of copies more and more quickly in our pick-up points.

Independent shops do it for us!

Half price UK subscription offer for you or a friend

Here’s a half price postal subscription. £12 for 12 issues (usually £24) for a limited period. This guarantees you a copy every month. See the subscription form below for details, or go to our website www.southdownsliving.com and look on the

right hand side a little way down for how to buy online.

South DownS LivingSeptember 2009 9

Welcome to the September edition of South Downs Living magazine.

This issue has a special wedding feature. Isn’t it amazing that the

recession does not seem to have affected the number of people getting married!

We have a country walk as usual on page 29 and another great story on The Downs Hotel (page 10) that stood where Stafford Way, Keymer is now, opposite Hassocks Library. This article was created from a letter and photographs we received from a lady who lived there and who read the first article that we printed back in May. It has brought back so many memories for people who knew the hotel and who visited it and informed so many younger people about the lifestyle and atmosphere of what is our quite recent past. So much interest has been raised about this building even though it no longer even exists!

Please send us your stories and reminiscences about places and events in Mid Sussex, especially the northern part where we have only recently started distributing.

Our ever-popular local events guide on pages 12-20 will show you where to go and what to do this month. As usual there are some great articles on local businesses. Many of you tell us that if you need to engage professional help for anything the first place you look is in our pages. And for the first time this month one of our writers is opening her heart to discuss the issues and humour of being a mum in Mid Sussex.

This is a record-breaking edition for us. We decided a year ago that a recession was a good time to grow and we have. It’s not as brave as it sounds as we already had plenty of capacity when we started!

Luckily many other businesses in the area also decided to expand and use South Downs Living to promote themselves. Many successful businesses started or expanded in the last recession.

We have also grown as a local news provider with items on our news website being picked up within minutes by Google News. Go to news.google.com and search for you home town or village and see new articles daily from us and from other publications. You can also follow

us on Twitter twitter.com/sussexliving (and no, SouthDownsLiving was too long for a Twitter user name!) The advantage with using Twitter is that you can see the first few words of many of our postings and then click a link to go to the full article on www.southdownsliving.com. You don’t even need to join Twitter to see the posts. We welcome any news or events – from the smallest event to the biggest – and you can send them to [email protected]. Please make sure that your information is accurate and put some contact details at the end so that the reader can find out more. Include pictures if possible.

Finally, many thanks to our readers and advertisers for making us the biggest circulation quality publication in Mid Sussex, and special

thanks to our team here without which it would not be possible. Our regular writers Sian Maidment, Roger Linn, Rupert Taylor, Lisa de Silva, Les Campbell, Claire Elford and all our casual

writers who bring such variety of voice to South Downs Living. Carla Basley in accounts, Tanis Banham, Sonya Clare and Suzi Reeve in sales, Lee Meads in design and production and Nicole Tata, our Publications Manager and Deputy Editor and to all our distribution personnel and our printers. I think a big Christmas party is in order!

Roger Booth, Editor01273 842550, [email protected].

The Downs Hotel The missing ten years:

1951-1961by The Overington Sisters

(Jennifer, Verity, Felicity)

Dear Roger,

I am Verity St John-Gillan, retired owner of the Downsview Delicatessen in Hassocks, now living in North Wales. During my eight years at the Downsview Delicatessen, I met many wonderful people and customers, some of which knew my family from The Downs Hotel in Keymer years ago.

I have read articles in TalkAbout and your excellent South Downs Living many times, the most recent article published in May. Three copies were forwarded to me by different people and copies sent to my sister who lives in America – all asking me to tell you what The Downs Hotel was really like between 1951-1961. So we have done so! And it is for your perusal.

The Downs Hotel – a white elephant in many ways – was in dire need of a new life and so, in February 1951, Mr John

St John Overington and his wife Grace Lucy and family took on the challenge. Mr Overington had an imaginative mind and, with foresight and hard work by his family and staff, the hotel came to life yet again during a time when stylish living, courtesy, pomp and ceremony were still part of the English lifestyle.

For the next ten years, the hotel employed uniformed staff: ladies for the office and reception work, door porters, gardeners, chamber maids, kitchen staff, a maitre d’ in charge of the dining room

and waiters and waitresses. Heating and cleaning men were employed for heavy work and manning the three large solid fuel furnaces that heated and provided hot water for the 40 bedrooms and hotel facilities.

Apart from a retired colonel with his white waxed handlebar moustache, a captain with a sword in his silver handled walking cane, embassy representatives and titles ladies and other genteel residents made up a total of eight permanently living at The Downs Hotel. There was the family of six and, of course, the resident staff. St Anne’s, a large Victorian house, previously a school, stood in the same grounds and became the family home.

The hotel began to flourish again, the meeting place venue for the Lyms Club, Rotary Club, Keymer Players, Downs Club, William de Warren Masonic Lodge and the Young Farmers. Percy Waterman with his five-piece band became part of the cogs to keep this industrious hotel up and running for the next decade.

June 1953 was, as we all know, the coronation of our young Queen Elizabeth II. The Downs Hotel did the occasion proud with a barbecue dance for 500 people, opening up the ballroom to the newly groomed gardens – sweeping lawns with flags, lights in the trees, beer tents, chairs and tables outside and braziers to add to the atmosphere. The chef roasted pig

on a spit, served pork chops, chicken, chips and bread rolls. This was such a wonderful celebration, being the very first barbecue to be served commercially in Sussex and and unknown to many. Its popularity made it a must, a way of life on a Saturday night for the next ten years.

So many celebrations: barbecue dances, Robbie Burns nights with bagpipes and haggis, Valentine dances with hearts and flowers, tramps balls and fancy dress, charity events, auction sales, public meetings – The Downs Hotel was one of the most sought after places to be.

As time went by, this old gracious building was thriving again, with its drawing room, crystal chandelier, grand piano and Victorian conservatory, lounges with open fires where guests would relax, read, be served morning coffee, afternoon teas with cucumber sandwiches or pre-dinner drinks. Visiting TV and film stars included Peter Butterworth, Petula Clark, Vera Lynn, William Holden, Tony Curtis, Arthur Askey, John and Hayley Mills and so many more – names from the past.

The main building proudly donned a clock tower with a magnificent early 1800s clock. There was a boat deck: a flat roof above the dining room on the first floor. This was just like a ship’s deck with railings and seats around the perimeter, life preservers, a captain’s lookout and a mast; deck games were set out at times on request. A lovely place to lay in the sun or stroll on the deck, best of all was the view across the South Downs, Clayton, Jack and Jill windmills

and a birds’ eye view of the gardens, complete with fountained fish pond and strutting peacocks.

No wonder people loved to come to The Downs Hotel. There was always a welcome at the entrance hall and reception and door porters to see to your baggage, a majestic sweeping staircase leading to the dining room and a lift for those who preferred not to use the stairs.

Unfortunately, the time had come for the fire and safety people to have their say. Fire escapes and fire doors were said to be necessary – what is more fireproof than a solid oak door and sash cord windows, I ask you? But the law is the

law and progress is progress, they say.Sadly, the expense was out of reach

financially, so this spelled the end of another era. Goodbye to old friends, disbanding of staff, a sale, an auction, a new home for the peacocks. In the name of progress the world is forever changing.

Maybe you were one of those privileged to have had a celebration to remember or meet a sweetheart at one of the barbecue dances. Although the building is no longer there, there are still many of us who remember these years and were part of the history of The Downs Hotel. ■

this powerful and emotionally charged novel contrasts the lives of its two main characters: Little Bee, a teenage refugee from violent oil-obsessed nigeria, and Sarah, wife, mother and career woman from leafy London suburbia. the paths of these two women cross in extraordinary and brutal circumstances on a nigerian beach where Sarah and husband Andrew have taken a ‘freebie’ holiday to try and patch up their marriage and Little Bee and her sister are fleeing drug crazed thugs. the consequences of this encounter have devastating ramifications for all the characters and they each tell their story.

now, here is the book club’s dilemma: there was as much right with this book as there was wrong! whilst the plot was unique and gripping, none of the characters were sufficiently likeable (or developed) for the reader to empathise with. whilst the descriptions of Little Bee’s experiences in nigeria and later as an asylum seeker were moving and well written, some of Sarah’s actions were melodramatic and unbelievable. So, worth reading yes, worth buying no.

Seeds of September

Perhaps my optimism for a sunny summer was rather dampened (quite literally) and we didn’t really have the barbeque

weather we were promised! Not that it hampered myself or our customers at Garden Pride enjoying their garden with outdoor furniture and barbeques, many reporting how they cooked their fish, beer butt chicken and their own grown vegetables. I suppose we learn to accept that the good old British weather can never be relied on! On a positive note, it has helped keep water levels up and provided our plants and grasses we have lovingly cared for all spring and summer with some vital moisture.

The last six years have provided us with sunny Septembers so let’s hope this the tradition continues. For all those keen gardeners out there the new range of seeds and bulbs are now in at your local garden centre, so now may be the time to start planning for next year.

Look after your lawn this month as it is a perfect time to repair any damaged patches by re-seeding or re-turfing, especially if you notice any yellowy red patches which can be a sign of fungal disease, most commonly Red Thread. If time permits, I would recommend scarifying vigorously to remove thatch

(the mat of dead grass making your lawn feel spongy in wet weather) and aerating, either by spiking the ground every few inches or so or investing in a pair of aerator shoes which are available at any well stocked garden centre.

Think about creating a water system that maximizes any rainfall so you can recycle as much water in the garden as possible. Water is a vital component in keeping your autumn and spring colours vibrant and plants, vegetables and lawns healthy. There are many ways to recycle water for irrigation. At Garden Pride we have trained staff available to advise our customers on all aspects of keeping their garden environmentally friendly, so seek help from your local garden centres who are well equipped to help!

Above all, enjoy the last of the warmer evenings this year and start to plan the colour for 2010! ■

Keeping the home fires burning Satisfy your caveman passion for controlled fire and

prepare the nest for winter with a wood burning stove from Bolney Stoves, Goddards Green.

Paul Labus has supplied and installed stoves to a broad cross section of properties – caravans, tumble down cottages, modern detached houses and palatial mansions –

and the common denominator is that “all our clients are trustful, decent, homemaking, caring people.”

Coming from Scandinavian countries which have the tradition, expertise and need for heat, wood burning stoves are room heaters here. “With large open plan spaces, an air convection Gulf Stream carries warmth throughout but in this country buildings are more compartmentalised.” Bolney Stoves have the knowledge to specify the size of stove to heat your room.

But this is a partnership so you need to come to see them, armed with your room dimensions and photos are helpful too. “We then provide you with information on the physical size, efficiency, glass characteristics, ease to live with and look of various stoves with the capacity to heat your room.” Paul can even provide you with information on the nature of the radiant, controllable heat you can expect. “The heat from a steel stove is as subtle as a slap in the face,” since the mechanical properties of steel are lined as opposed to the porous – like an Aero bar – structure of cast iron which produces a “comfortable, heavy, deep, cuddly, enveloping warmth.”

After mulling over your option, Paul will then come out to quote. “The quote is very detailed and it’s important to educate customers. It dissuades the tyre kickers, leaving me more time for those who’ve done their homework.” A stove is a natural draft appliance so you need a flue. “That’s the engine driving the stove. It has to be fire proof, not resistant. We don’t leave stuff out; that would be playing with fire!” A stove should work at 50-75% of its capability and by specifying a smaller engine working to greater capacity “you don’t have to put in half a tree to heat your room.”

Contemporary stove designs have grown on Paul. In his precise voice, using analogy, he explains: “Years ago I hated blue cheese but I tried just a tiny bit of Roquefort.” He shrugs, clear eyes and smiling: ”You have to try things; it opens your eyes.” Paul is now a self-confessed blue cheese addict and wood burning stove anorak! ■

North Chailey Walk

Discover this undulating, varying 3-4 mile walk over chailey common and through farmland and woods. This is a circular walk which starts and finishes at the Kings Head public house at North chailey at the junction of the A272 and the A275.

From the Kings Head, walk back to the road junction and cross to the pavement opposite and turn left towards Haywards Heath.

After 100 yards, take the signed path on your right at the eastern end of the lay-by and drop downhill to follow the path through trees and out onto the Common, aiming for the distant house in front of you. At the house, turn left on a wide grassy track and, at a way mark post, bear right to pass Arkles West Cottage. Just past the cottage, where the paths diverge, take the left fork to go slightly uphill. Go ahead over a crossing path and, on the crest of the hill, bear half left towards a seat. Cross a wide track and drop downhill on a thinly defined path which soon becomes more obvious. Cross another path and continue downhill. At the bottom of the hill, go left on a grassy path between bushes and small trees to a way mark post on the edge of the Common. Go over the double stile in front of you and go up the field with a wooden fence on your left to pass through a pair of metal gates to Great Noven Farm.

Turn left on a track between buildings (NB: The route on the ground does not agree with the route shown on the map) and follow the concrete track downhill to Vale Farm. Just before the entrance, bear right over a stile on a signed path into a paddock, soon to go left over another stile and then right over a squeeze stile. Turn left on a broad track and immediately look for a waymarked path to your right which winds through woodland to use a raised walkway over a boggy area leading to a footbridge over a stream. Turn left alongside the stream on a path which bears right and meanders through woodland to a stile into a field. Go uphill to a wide gap in the trees and go over a stile to continue uphill with a fence on your right towards the distant buildings ahead. At the top, go right on a signed path with a fence on your left to the edge of the wood ahead. Go over another stile and immediately right into Great Wood. Keep to your left on the well-signed

path ahead which eventually bears left downhill. Turn right on a wide track, ignoring the signed path to your left, and carry on along the valley to go uphill and into a field. Go ahead with the wood to your right, soon to veer left away from the wood to go downhill to use a causeway between two overgrown ponds. At the end of the causeway, maintain direction ahead and bear left through a gap, then right uphill to Great Noven Farm which you passed earlier. Turn left to follow the access track for about half a mile to Warrs Hill Road where you should turn right. From this point, to return to your car you can either follow the road out to the A275 where you turn right for the Kings Head, or the more adventurous might like to wander south across the Common to the Kings Head and the start of the walk. ■

Body matters: restoring the

temple

remember that slightly risqué party game called Twister, popular with kids and possibly even more popular with adults

after a drink or two?

I’d asked Nikki Penny exactly what a neurological physiotherapist does, because it sounds a bit of a mouthful. She could have simply told me, but this irrepressibly

bubbly individual decided to show me. Out came the mat, so reminiscent of the 70s favourite with its pattern of circles, and Nikki went through her paces.

No strange contortions here, of course, but basic fluent movement as she darted across the

mat, legs flicking from one circle to another, her torso flowing forwards and then sideways.

Basically, co-ordination. Because when mind and body part company, Nikki does the repair work.

The mat is just a tiny part of her armoury. To get technical, a neurological physiotherapist specialises in treating patients who have suffered an injury or disease affecting their central nervous system.

More often than not this is a stroke, and its devastating consequences. Take lawyer Tina Thomas who suffered her first stroke when she was only 35.

She said: “When I first met Nikki I was still seriously affected by my stroke. She stood out then as a ray of hope and enthusiasm at

a time which was otherwise pretty bleak and uncertain.

“I was paralysed down my left side. The doctors were reasonably confident that I would walk again, but all were very doubtful that I would ever use my left arm or hand – as a reasonably serious amateur pianist this was devastating.

“Even at that time one of Nikki’s assistants commented: ‘If anyone can get your hand and arm back, it’s Nikki. She doesn’t give up.’

by Rupert taylor

“All Nikki’s patients I’ve met have huge admiration, respect and affection for her, both for her expert skills and as a person. Her neuro knowledge is awesome.”

High praise. So where can such magic be weaved?

It all happens at a converted cowshed on the outskirts of Hurstpierpoint, home for the past decade of the Nikki Penny Stroke and Neurological Physiotherapy Clinic.

Her patients range from the age of six to 91, falling broadly into two categories. Firstly, those who have suffered a stroke or head or spinal injuries, needing progressive treatment to help them keep their optimum mobility and achieve as full a life as possible, and secondly those with chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s or Motor Neurone Disease, where the aim is to keep patients as independent as possible, adding to the quality of their lives.

Teaching people who have a neurological insult to find their balance, reach out for things, walk and – amazingly – run again will take on a new dimension when Nikki opens a gym this month on a site adjacent to the clinic.

She recalled one particular patient. “She was a young mum with a toddler and suffered a stroke soon after her second child was born,” she said. “She was unable to even sit up straight after it happened.”

After some seven years under Nikki’s care, the woman had put her life back together, resumed her career and entered the Hairy Haggis Race which

enabled staff and patients to share the running of the Edinburgh Marathon in May.

“When she first went on our treadmill machine she could only manage 200m before she got out of breath,” said Nikki. “But she went on to complete that race and told me: ‘That’s the first time since my stroke that I’m really proud of myself.’

“She’s incredibly brave and it was a very emotional event.”

Nikki, frustrated by the politics and resource-led approach to the NHS, founded the private

clinic in 1998, working in both sectors until five years ago when she set up full-time in the barn.

She has recruited a team of highly qualified

therapists who work alongside her, enabling the clinic to offer more specialist skills and cover home visits across a wide catchment area, stretching from to London to Bournemouth and Sevenoaks.

She juggles the demands of a young family with her career, and the satisfaction it affords. “The NHS was all about funding and not about patients reaching their full potential,” she said. “Another couple of months of treatment can often make the difference between people going home in a wheelchair or going home able to walk.” ■

AnnA EmiliA

Bubbling over with enthusiasm for her thriving hair salon, Anna Defilippo doesn’t have time to stand still. Her energy is infectious. “I don’t think the recession has hit us yet”, she says. “We’re just so busy!”

The salon on Hurstpierpoint’s high street has succeeded where others have failed, delivering the sort of cutting edge, on-trend hairdressing normally only available from

top class London stylists, but with a friendly and approachable vibe that’s pure Hurst. Affordable, too. “Our prices haven’t gone up in three years.”

Anna and her team – Angie, Katherine, Jackie and Victoria – have the professional expertise to offer the full range of hair services. With diaries full and the business growing, a new senior stylist, Alex Taylor, has been appointed to start in September. “I headhunted her myself,” Anna says proudly, business instincts fully intact, “I am so thrilled she’s coming to Hurst.” And she has her eye on one or two other stylists who may well be joining the salon in the next few months.

Anna’s background and connections in the London fashion world are at the heart of what Anna Emilia are about. “Hair is always influenced by what’s on the catwalk, so we’ve got to know the latest trends. This autumn, 80s retro is hot news; honey blonde is the new blonde; cuts are becoming more edgy.” She affectionately refers to her ‘North London posse’ – friends and clients from glossy magazines and fashion houses who she keeps in

close contact with and who help keep her finger on the pulse.

The salon itself has been styled with great care and attention to detail. Anna’s trademark mix of French white, rococo inspired, far-from-shabby chic, combined with contemporary designer minimalism, works perfectly to create a calm, uncluttered ambience – more Starck than

stark – where clients can relax knowing their hair is in the hands of true professionals.

And it gets better. Building works are nearly

complete to extend the salon through to the rear of the period cottage and give access to a secluded Victorian courtyard garden. The bijou extension, flooded with light, will provide a deceptively spacious but very stylish space leading onto the cutest little conservatory you ever did see.

Anna knows how to make her clients feel welcome. ■

Freedom to the people

Fit for allIf you go to one of our local olympos leisure centres, you may have noticed some changes recently. For instance, a television screen has appeared in the console of my favourite running machine. Now I can get completely knackered just watching Heartbeat.

In fact, most of the cardiovascular machines have been replaced by brand new, state-of-the-art ‘Life Fitness’ machines and it’s all the work of the freedomleisure trust.

freedomleisure is a not for profit trust which manages a very wide range of leisure facilities right across the South East. The trust started life as a spin-off from Wealden District Council when, in 2002, they decided to outsource their leisure department as a separate entity. In the seven years since then, freedomleisure has become astonishingly successful. Over £4.5 million has been reinvested for the benefit of people of all ages throughout the region. They currently employ over a thousand people and the business model works so well that, in addition to Wealden District Council, the trust now works with Hastings Borough Council, Rother District Council, Crawley Borough Council, Mid Sussex District Council as well as East and West Sussex County Councils, with a turnover of some £20 million annually.

And the secret of this success? “Outreach is very important to us,” says Karen Burrell, the trust’s Head of Sales and Marketing. “We can only create high quality leisure facilties by getting out there, listening to people and then delivering the facilities and programmes they want. To do this, we work in partnership with local authorities, schools, colleges and a whole raft of other agencies in the communities we serve.”

I was amazed at the scope of the trust’s activities. It includes the management of nineteen leisure sites in Kent and Sussex, including the big Olympos leisure centres at Haywards Heath, East Grinstead and Burgess Hill. But there’s much, much more. Their highly qualified training staff offer courses in subjects ranging from Health and Safety to Lifesaving and First Aid. In the Wealden District the trust runs the lottery funded Active Play Project for children, which takes the facilities and staff to run free play sessions out into the rural community. On 1st July of this year freedomleisure added the management of the Olympos Centres, Clair Hall and the Martlets Hall to their portfolio.

I asked Karen to explain what the words ‘not for profit’ in the description of the trust meant, and perhaps unsurprisingly she said: “It means exactly that. Because we have no shareholders to pay, all the surplus we make over and above the trust’s operating costs are ploughed back into the services and facilities we provide. We see this continual process of reinvestment as crucial to the way we operate.”

Karen went on to talk about what I sensed was something of a crusade for her – freedomleisure’s ability to offer healthy, life-enhancing leisure facilities to the whole cross-section of the community. For example, at some sites, the trust runs specific fitness programmes for different groups, like the classes for pre and post natal

women. There are weight loss courses and specific programmes for people with cardiovascular problems and other defined medical conditions. And most of

this activity is available to you even if you are not a member of a leisure centre.

freedomleisure is of course a keen supporter of the government’s ‘Change 4 Life’ health initiative and works hard to promote the value of parents and kids exercising together. “Swimming together, playing tennis or simply walking as a family – physical activity is so important to our general health,” says Karen.

So there it is. No excuses. Get out there and do something. ■

All you need is loveby nicole tata

congratulations! So you’ve found your soulmate – someone who understands you completely, the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.

Of course you’re savvy enough to know that in time every relationship needs work to keep it strong. But as long as you keep showing your love and appreciation

for each other, everything will be fine, right?Maybe it’s not quite that simple. What we

do know is that relationships thrive on communication and that, without it, couples tend to drift apart. There’s a mountain of literature out there telling us how to relate to each other successfully. Some would have us believe that the secret is in recognising that men and women hail from different planets!

According to Dr Gary Chapman, well-known American relationship counsellor and bestselling author, everyone gives and receives love in different ways, and that’s where the problem starts. Yes, communication is key, but Chapman argues this is doomed to failure unless we speak the same love ‘language’. In other words, you can tell your partner that you love him all you like, he may not understand what you mean: there’s a language barrier. Imagine trying to have a meaningful relationship with a monolingual Mandarin speaker; you get the idea.

Chapman has identified five ways in which we express love – his ‘five love languages’:

Which is your primary love language?Words of affirmation verbal compliments, telling your partner how wonderful he is, how great she looks, or just saying ‘i love you’. Simple statements are sometimes all a person needs to hear to feel loved.

Quality time Doing things together, focusing attention on each other. not as easy as it sounds: even an intimate dinner for two can pass without a minute of quality time being shared.

receiving gifts Presents, flowers, chocolates, anything really – as a symbol of love. gifts don’t have to be expensive to send a powerful message of love.

acts of service taking pleasure in helping out in practical ways, doing things for each other. washing the car, doing the laundry, running errands can all be perceived as gifts of love.

Physical touch holding hands, being affectionate, making love. A hug can speak louder than a thousand words. to many, lack of physical touch in a relationship is a deal breaker.

words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service and physical touch. Each of us has a primary love language, the one they speak and hear the loudest. Just ask yourself these questions:

Do you love buying little presents for your other half? Are you thrilled when he comes home with flowers? Do you still look forward to cuddling up on the sofa of an evening? Perhaps you feel most loved when he gives you ‘that look’? Do you feel a sense of togetherness when you tackle those DIY jobs? Does he pull the stops out on Valentine’s Day? Do you enjoy spending time together as best friends?

Think about how you give and receive love. Now do the same for your partner. Is there a difference?

If you speak different primary love languages, Chapman continues, you won’t communicate effectively and may misconstrue your partner’s good intentions. For example, if your main love language is receiving gifts, you will buy little things to express your love to her – but if her love language is acts of service, she may well feel more loved if you offer to do the washing up. In her mind, those flowers will die soon anyway, the chocolates will make her fat and the lingerie will simply illustrate the point!

A few years into the relationship, when the first wave of romantic love is starting to ebb, many couples find that their ‘love tanks’ are empty – they’ve given all they can to the relationship, yet feel unloved and unappreciated. And that’s a bad sign. Learning to tune into each other’s love language can be a powerful tool to keeping the flame alive. ■

How do I say ‘I do’?Wedding vows are a sensitive business. How can you express your love for your partner in a few well chosen, meaningful words, to be declared in the full glare of public attention, without it coming out all wrong or sounding cheesy?Impossible, you may think. No wonder most couples opt for the tried and tested, the traditional and the non-contentious. On the other hand, wedding ceremonies are as personal as it gets and it may mean a great deal to you to find just the right words to say to the love of your life. Here are a few ideas to inspire you...

(husband), I take you to have and to hold, From this day forward, you’ll do as you’re told, You’ll lavish upon me, chocolate and praise, And cherish my quirky neurotic ways, Be faithful and spurn other tempting alliances, Be master of fixing all household appliances, You’ll share my hopes, my desires you’ll bless, With a little help from American Express. These are my vows, I forgive your past sins, Now that we’re married, your training begins. I take you, (wife), to be my wife, You’re richer, I’m poorer, please share in my life. You’ll honour my need for executive toys, And cherish the nights I am out with the boys, You’ll tend to my hangovers, as you’ve been taught, And beg for forgiveness if ever we fought, When I’m “in the mood”, you will always obey, Keep the fridge full of beer and do as I say, (name), I wed thee, till death do us part, Till you gain seven pounds, I give you my heart.

© Alix Burrell

Because of you, I laugh, I smile, I dare to dream again. I look forward with great joy to spending the rest of my life with you, caring for you, nurturing you, being there for you in all life has for us, and I vow to be true and faithful for as long as we both shall live.

“We all work hard here to create a salon environment where clients can come in, relax and leave not only looking good, but also feeling great,” says Katy Jenkins, owner of Essensuals hair salon.

With high levels of job satisfaction amongst her staff and a client base ranging from five to 80 years old, Katy can feel immensely proud of what

she has achieved. So it’s a surprise to discover that she only discovered her vocation by chance. From an early age Katy dreamt of becoming a paediatric nurse, but when her school failed to find her a work placement in a hospital she ended up gaining her work experience in a hairdresser’s. She never looked back.

After training at Toni & Guy in Horsham, Katy opened her first salon, Essensuals, in Haywards Heath in 1999. As the diffusion chain of Toni & Guy, all stylists employed by Essensuals benefit from the parent company’s world famous training programme and, ten years on, Katy’s business is thriving.

“It’s the training that sets us apart,” explains Katy. “Not only is it very thorough, it’s ongoing, which means we can all keep up with the very latest trends and developments in the hairdressing world.”

Alongside the usual hairdressing services, Essensuals offer hair extensions, nails and make-up on request and will soon introduce the Yuko Hair Straightening System, which can permanently straighten curly hair. Full bridal hair services are also available. And as men’s grooming continues to grow, the salon offers a Backwash

Blend, a quick and easy colour treatment done at the basin, covering 50% of grey hair and producing very natural results. “My own dad had it done and it looked amazing. He said he looked and felt ten years younger,” laughed Katy.

While she has worked on runway hair for London Fashion Week on several occasions, Katy’s proudest achievements have all been nurturing the development of her loyal staff, and one of her old Saturday girls is now a trainer herself, based at

Toni & Guy in London. Last year, the salon

won the Toni & Guy Team Spirit Award. “I was thrilled that we won that,” exclaims Katy, “because

it honoured the commitment of the whole team to always give our best.” Clearly, a well deserved win for a team that has met the challenge of combining a warm and friendly salon environment with the very best in contemporary hairdressing. ■

Men only Promotional offer: The first five men to book a Backwash Blend treatment will receive a FrEE Men Expert grooming pack from L’oreal.

When the chips are down…

Not every child is blessed with having forward thinking parents and 21 years ago, eight year old Ian Wells certainly wouldn’t have classed himself as lucky when his parents arranged for their son to have computer lessons on Saturday mornings.

While Ian may have preferred to be out playing football with his friends, today this young IT entrepreneur is glad they made him stick at it. One

of the co-founders of The Laptop Workshop, Ian’s experience, drive and ambition has recently led him to launch his own company, Xpress Repair.

“Having worked in the computer industry for many years, I’ve spent a long time listening to what customers want,” Ian explains. “Setting up Xpress Repair from scratch has given me the opportunity to create a company whose philosophy is committed to providing an unmatched level of customer service.”

There has been much media speculation recently about the safety of your data when in the hands of certain repair shops. “Technology is alien to most people and when their computer goes wrong they feel pretty vulnerable and worry about being ripped off,” says Ian. “So we try and be as transparent as possible. We are more than happy for customers to sit here and watch us inspect and repair their machines while they wait.”

Based in Haywards Heath, this impressive diagnostic centre offers repairs on laptops, PCs and Apple Macs. As well as a warm welcome, there is easy on-site parking, a ‘while you wait’ area with armchairs and complimentary drinks and snacks – in fact it’s so comfortable, you’ll probably never want to leave!

With computers now such an integral part of our lives, when they go wrong it’s not only frustrating, it can also affect both our lifestyle and our livelihoods. Aware that a fast turnaround is a customer priority, Xpress Repair aim to inspect and repair a machine on the same day and hopefully while you wait.

All inspections are free of charge and there is a ‘no fix no fee’ policy. As Ian knows, it’s important to give his customers total peace of mind and, unlike many other repair centres, Xpress Repair operate a fixed price menu so there are no hidden charges.

The work is carried out to the highest standards and not only are parts guaranteed for 12 months but, unlike almost all other repairers, the company

also offers a six month warranty on software repairs.

“Our aim is to work around the customer, not make them work around us,” claims Ian and nowhere is this more evident than in the company’s impressive free collection and delivery service. For commuters and those working long hours, this service is extended from 7am to 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for added convenience there is an online booking facility.

Ian’s mission to raise levels of customer service knows no bounds and over time he hopes to expand the company with a nationwide chain of regional Xpress Repair centres.

Until then, those outside the current catchment area will be able to take advantage of an exciting new service. In conjunction with UPS, customers will be able to have their laptops collected in

custom designed boxes, inspected, repaired and delivered back to them from anywhere in the UK at a postal cost of just £19.99.

Also in the pipeline are plans to sell laptops direct to the public. Yet

while other retailers often charge extra for setting up your new computer and for McAfee anti-viral protection software, at Xpress Repair this will be free of charge. “We want people to be able to take the computer home and use it straight away,” explains Ian.

And just when you think it can’t get any better, Ian tells me that to show his immense appreciation for the work they do, anyone who works for the emergency services or the armed forces is eligible for a 25% discount on repairs!

So, if you’ve just spilt coffee all over your keyboard or are worried you’ve just lost a vital document or all your photographs, contact Xpress Repair and be prepared to have your expectations of customer service seriously upgraded. ■

“We are committed to providing an unmatched level of customer

service. Our aim is to work around the customer, not make them

work around us.”

CAFÉ ELVIRA – OPEN ALL YEAR

Café Elvira is run by Vera Ashpool, also co-proprietor of next door Jeremy’s Restaurant at Borde Hill. Both the café and Restaurant complement each other perfectly, as Vera shares Jeremy’s passion for good food and the best ingredients available.

Lunches offer a daily, home-made plat du jour, from £7.50 and include such favorites as fish cakes and a range of vegetarian tarts. Children’s choices also available, together with freshly baked cakes and biscuits for elevenses.

With traditional English tea shops becoming increasingly difficult to come across, it is good to know that afternoon Sussex cream teas are available at Café Elvira, accompanied by freshly baked scones made on the premises.

Whenever possible, local, seasonal produce is used together with jams and honey.

Café Elvira is open from 9.30 to 5.00pm daily, except Mondays during the winter. Parking is free.

Special evening reservations are taken for suppers, parties and celebrations. Party menus are available from the Café and both Vera and Manager, Maddi, are more than happy to talk to you about any special requirements you may have.

We also offer a ‘take-home’ menu which includes a range of home-made products, savoury and sweet tarts, Christmas puddings and our famous walnut bread.

Having it all…

It doesn’t matter because I’m going to marry a rich man.” Eldest daughter Olivia, whose level of ambition makes Barbie look like a suffragette, is trying to explain away her chronic underachievement in this year’s exams.

“But women threw themselves under race horses so that you could have a career.”

“Why would I want a career? A string of A*s and a First in History isn’t going to get me job in this climate. Anyway, lots of women make a career out of marriage. If it’s good enough for Kate Middleton, it’s good enough for me.”

As a product of Seventies Feminism, I’m shocked at her attitude, but as the toddler kitted out as a pink fairy announces that she wants to be a princess when she grows up, I’m not surprised.

“You see, she’s got the right attitude. Marry a prince. Who wants to earn their own pension?”

“But in all those fairy tales, the princesses have awful lives. They’re either locked up in towers, forced to do all the housework or lying around in a coma waiting to be kissed by a prince.”

“Yes, but once they’ve been kissed by the prince, they get to live happily ever after.”

While fairy princesses may be poor role models, the current batch of female celebrities with their photoshopped bodies and lives are scarcely any better. And what of their career-driven sisters? The ones without children are usually cast as the ball-breaking wicked witch and the ones with children as half-hearted flexi-timers, given to crying in the loo and the odd stint on Prozac.

I glance over at my List: buy groceries (remember own bags), clean, cook, tidy, organise homework, organise my job to be more school friendly, actually finish reading Book Club novel, nurture the Bread Winner, walk the dog, sort the garden, exercise, get body like Giselle and work out how to wear harem pants.

What sort of role model does that make me? Am I Having It All? Or am I Doing It All?

The latest studies in Social Psychiatry suggest that our teenage girls have the worst mental health in the land. The pressures on our daughters to be beautiful, thin, popular and academically brilliant have never been greater and increasing numbers are resorting to eating disorders and self-harm as a way of coping with the stress.

Maybe it’s time we sisters cut ourselves some slack. Add ‘Tiara’ to the List.

Mike’s dad, Matt’s dad, family, friends and children all helped. “The kids have been as keen as mustard!” Local businesses South Downs Cellars,

Dark Star Brewery, S & P Flooring, Balcombe Glass, S A Spooner Carpentry... Self project managed, involving three generations of two families, plus friends and suppliers, the transformation of The Sportsman has seen everyone mucking in, lots of hard graft with an adaptable approach; reading like the best profile statement for an up-to-date CV.

Aware of ghastly statistics about pubs closing, in general Matt knows “this is the right time to take the plunge.” Matt and Mike’s established partnership has already proved an enduring combination. “We bounce off each other,” notes Mike, although not physically as they both look as fit as a butcher’s dog. “Mike’s grinning like a Cheshire cat now he’s got his pub mirror back. I was as adamant it should go as he was adamant it should stay!” Mike suspected sabotage when told it was smashed and needed repair but added smiling that “we just get on with problems.”

Matt and Mike chose The Sportsman because “it’s better starting from nothing, with a clean slate. Whatever the previous reputation of this place, we’re bringing our experience and name from The Ansty Cross and other places in Mid Sussex we’ve both worked at.” And it is a great setting: a country pub, but not too far from the madding crowd, next to a well used road, close to the bypass with lots of space including a large car park which can even take coaches.

They are family focused guys keen to revive a traditional pub and breathe new life into family

oriented days out cycling or walking, stopping at the pub for a drink and maybe for a bite to eat as well. “We do good pub food; we call it Seventies retro. People love it. You’ll find prawn cocktail, steak and kidney, fish’n chips, bangers and mash and Sunday lunches. Good value traditional home cooked food.”

But it doesn’t stop there; they are crackling with “ideas, ideas, ideas” for future possibilities – breakfasts, functions, beer festival, carousel, club and association events, bonfire night, wine tasting – bouncing like ping pong balls between them. ■

The world of news delivery is changing rapidly. Traditional newspapers are facing falling circulation as more and more readers get their news online. Much to the despair of existing local publications, local authorities and businesses are producing their own newspapers and magazines but their news is, of course, not impartial.

This leads to a number of issues. Traditionally, journalists keep an eye on local authorities, the courts and other events and tell us if they find something that should be reported. So, in future, who will do this?

Also, people are looking for news that is more local and more relevant to them. Who will write this local news? Who will get it out to the reader?

We can help. Our news website at www.southdownsliving.com can handle any amount of news without the cost of print and distribution. The website passes on its news to Google News. Last month I posted a short article about the upcoming Poynings Fair. They were catering for 150 people and over 800 came. I can’t claim the credit because I don’t know, and it was a beautiful day. But if you

email us your news and comment, we will try to make sure it gets as good coverage as possible. We will also feature some of the posts in this magazine.

Here are some stories from our news website. If you don’t see anything about your group or interest, maybe that’s because you didn’t tell us! Please email: [email protected]

You can check the coverage on your town or village by going to news.google.com and search for it by name. You can even get daily news alerts sent to your email address.

Write for us. Please email your news and events to [email protected]

Edburton Flower FestivalSt Andrew’s Church, Edburton, will be filled with flowers for a three-day flower festival from Friday 11th September to Sunday 13th September. Over 40 spectacular displays will show off the historic church and the results of the

major restoration programme for which the small local community raised an impressive total of over £260,000.

Local flower arrangers from the Henfield Flower Club are staging the event, putting together the displays with the theme of ‘Country Ways’. Individual displays will cover ‘Arable farming’ to ‘The Blacksmith’ and ‘Windmills’ to ‘Village Cricket’.

All the flowers have been generously donated by the parishioners and Friends of St Andrew’s in memory of their loved ones.

St Andrew’s is on the Edburton Road, midway between Upper Beeding and Poynings and will be well signed. Car parking will be provided in a field 20 yards west of Springs Smoked Salmon shop. Admission is by programme costing just £3, with children free.

The festival is open from 10am to 5pm on all three days. There is good wheelchair access and refreshments will be available.

Golfers celebrate 30 years and help local hospice

As part of their celebrations to mark their 30th anniversary, Steyning and Henfield Rotary Club presented a cheque for £2,000 to St Barnabas House Trustee, Ian Hart. This money was raised from their recent Charity Golf Day held at Pyecombe Golf Club.

Organiser Mike Coleman expressed his thanks to all the local businesses and participants who had made the event such a success.

Said Ian, “we are so grateful to the members of the Steyning and Henfield Rotary Club. They have supported the hospice for many years and generously donated many thousands of pounds to the charity. We care for patients and families in Steyning and Henfield and have very loyal Friends Groups and supporters in both villages. The continued support of the Rotary Club means a great deal to everyone at St Barnabas and we would like to congratulate them on their 30th anniversary.”

Hurstpierpoint SingersOur autumn term will commence on Monday, 7th September at 7.30pm for 7.45pm start, at the Methodist Church, Cuckfield Road.

All interested in singing Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, 20th September at the Holy Trinity Church at the end of Hurstpierpoint Festival are welcome to join our workshop rehearsals on Monday, 7th and 14th September for £3 each time, which would be deducted from subscriptions should people later join.

We shall then begin rehearsing Handel’s Passion of Christ for our Spring concert until half term, when we shall prepare for our Christmas Concert on Sunday, 20th December at the Village Centre.

Each July, we especially enjoy singing with several other choirs conducted by our Musical Director Stephen Hope, after rehearsing together on Tuesday evenings at Horsham. In aid of local Hospices, we perform at Arundel Cathedral, accompanied by the Sinfonia da Chiesa. This year Dame Felicity Lott and Dame Ann Murray are among the soloists, singing works by Rossini and Puccini. In 2010 we shall be performing Belshazzar’s Feast and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. Members can join the combined choirs plus orchestra taking trips to sing in various European cathedrals. They have just returned from Barcelona, and Bruges is proposed near Christmas.

Girlguiding centenary walk100 years ago, some determined girls stepped forward at the 1909 Boy Scout rally at Crystal Palace Park and asked Robert Baden-Powell to develop a similar movement especially for them.

To mark the occasion of this centenary, on the first weekend in September there will be about 500,000 Girlguiding UK members and guests attending parties across the UK and, in doing so, launch a year of Centenary Celebrations which will run from 5th September 2009 to 20th October 2010.

Members from all sections of Girlguiding UK, from Rainbows (age 5) through to the Trefoil Guild are invited to locally organised Launch parties and, providing it is practical to do so, will be asked to bring a guest – someone who has previously made her guiding Promise but who is not currently a member of Girlguiding UK to come and take a fresh look at Girlguiding UK today.

Locally the South Downs Division – which covers Hassocks, Ditchling and Hurstpierpoint Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Trefoil Guild – are celebrating with a walk on Sunday, 6th September from Ditchling Beacon and Jack and Jill across our beautiful South Downs to Hassocks to Wolstonbury Hill, culminating in a special celebration picnic at Downlands School. If you have previously taken your promise in Guiding – whether it was 5 years ago or 50 years ago – we would invite you to join us at 3.30pm at Downlands School for a picnic (bring your own picnic and a chair/blanket) and to share your experiences of Guiding with us.

If you are interested in knowing more about the centenary celebrations in this area or would like to help in the Guiding movement, please contact Deborah Phillips on 01273 891272. You could also read more online at www.girlguiding100years.org.uk.

Bentley’s: A Rolls Royce accountancy service

The careers Adviser didn’t need to get past ‘A’ for accounting before Mid Sussex based Steve Bentley could release his latent potential.

Having left school at 16, Steve pursued a few different career paths before finding the profession that would prove to be his calling. Accountancy

transformed his prospects. He took the Association of Accountancy Technicians course and thrived. Not shy of hard graft he worked full time, went to college three evenings a week and went grass cutting on Sundays to put himself through the exams.“I enjoyed it and after completing this course went on to do the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants exams.” Qualifying in 2003, Steve has since continued his studies, adding on to these achievements with the Association of Taxation Technicians accreditation before gaining his Audit practicing licence in 2006, and trading under the name of Active Acounting Solutions Limited until recently, simplifying his trading name to Bentleys.

A lot of young people would be put off by the six or seven years’ studying, and apparently back to basics manual preparation of financial statements, hand written in red and black ink, but Steve contends: “It’s the best training; I wouldn’t change it.” He is quite a radical, not holding opinion back, despite his cheeky boy smile and pale dreamy eyes. “Advancements in the use of IT in the accountancy industry has impaired understanding of the reports. Often I have gone to new clients and have helped them to introduce checklists to ensure their reports are correct. The reports are only as good as the user.”

Hungry for more of a challenge, having been an Audit Manager for 4 years, he made the big leap to sole practitioner in 2006 and, although his main strength is taxation, rues the dangers of becoming too specialised. “A Budget can wipe out an industry. Take the Capital Gains Tax changes. I used to love all the allowances but that’s all gone with the flat 18%.” Consequently, he specialises in corporate general practice work for small to medium sized companies.

“The recession is deepening and businesses need fast, accurate, helpful financial information.” Steve’s noticed that after dealing with all the historical accounting information he’s becoming even more involved. He emphasises: “You need to know where you are. Where are we today? What’s the break even point? Getting the results six months after your year end is too late.” His approach is very proactive, involved in reviewing product pricing and even producing

monthly management accounts. He represents all sorts of different companies and learns their business processes. Although the intricacies of pharmaceuticals foxed him slightly once, to him “figures are figures – fixed and variable costs, overheads, accruals.”

Steve’s office is at Warninglid although his Scaynes Hill home combines as an office to which clients are also welcome. His wife Liz runs the firm’s payroll bureau in between bringing up their two children. His main working environment is at his clients’ premises. “There are no records to take away and the client is on the premises so if I need to ask questions they can be answered immediately. It makes for a much better personal relationship.“ He can even leave a draft set of accounts at the end of his visit. This professional and personal interaction is very important. “I need to like my clients. It’s a very personal service, sharing private information, so they need to like me too.” Steve is aware that people regard accountancy as a bit of a dry subject. “I agree with

them. The Auditors exam was so boring.” He mocks himself in softly sibilant self-deprecation but he is an inspiring teacher,

educating his clients in what the figures mean, providing training in effective record keeping.

Other distinguishing aspects of his service include the Business Review report he produces, in which he highlights key business performance indicators and gives feedback on changes and meaning to their inter-relationship, and a taxation pack where he reviews the firm’s tax position. This includes tax investigations as standard. The penalties for failure to comply with these have increased significantly and Steve feels the information required for it and the effort in complying does not warrant an additional fee. In fact, Steve only charges a single fixed annual fee for his service. “The clock’s not ticking, there are no incidentals for phone calls or the occasional meeting. Clients can be relaxed in the knowledge that they can call me as often as they need to throughout the year.” The requirement to recruit a Financial Director can expose small to medium sized businesses to a significant additional cost for an overhead, which in his opinion represents little value for money. But Steve can act as Financial Director on a peripatetic basis, chargeable only by fee time, saving a business from recruiting a Financial Director. He takes this sort of pragmatism into his personal life too. “I’m not tight but I’m not extravagant.” ■

Look out for the full Hurst Festival 2009 programme, available from many South Downs Living pick-up points.the hurst Festival could not happen without the help of the Parish Council and hurstpierpoint Community Charity, not to mention the many many volunteers who help make the Festival such a success. Many thanks to all of them. The committee is always looking for willing helpers. running a festival is great fun but needs a lot of hands, so if you would like to be involved, please log on to our website and sign up.www.hurstfestival.org.uk

Hurst Festival is back for 2009 with a breathtaking mixture of events – from a Medieval Fair with jousting and a battle in Danny Park, the world premiere of a new play about charles Darwin and an exhibition at the Holy Trinity church featuring a denim coffin!

This is the fifth year of the Festival, which runs from 12th to 27th September, and organisers have mixed tried and tested attractions such as a sing-a-long Messiah

at the Holy Trinity Church, a Family Fun Day with giant blow-up human table football on St Lawrence School field to a concert at Little Washbrook Farm barn by Sussex folk legends The Copper Family.

The Medieval Fair is on Sunday, 20th September and promises to be the highlight of the Festival with a range of medieval crafts on display together with food and drink.

Darwin200, the celebration of the bicentenary, will be marked by the premiere of Collapsing Creation by New Zealand playwright Michael

Burton at the Players’ Theatre, also a special evening of events to mark the fact that Darwin’s close friend and scientific colleague, Alfred Russell Wallace, wrote his parallel work The Malay Archipelago in Hurstpierpoint, starting at his home in the village, Treeps House.

The opening and closing weekends will see party evenings in the Village Centre with local bands The Big Kahuna, The Pagodas and the Counterfeit Blues Brothers soul band.

Local artists Desperate Hurstwives will perform for three nights at the Players’ Theatre with guest compère, local actress Gwyneth Powell.

Labour MP and Have I Got News For You regular Bob Marshall-Andrews is guest speaker at a dinner at Pyecombe Golf Club and local comedian and TV stand-up Stephen Grant will compère a full line-up of comedians: Zoe Lyons, Seann Walsh and Pierre Holmes at Hurstpierpoint Social Club on Wednesday, 16th September.

For the first time there will be a children’s writing workshop with prizewinning Brighton writer Nicky Singer, and Joseph O’Neill’s novel Netherland has been chosen for The Village Reads discussion evening at the New Inn.

Tickets are bookable through the website www.hurstfestival.org.uk or from The Mint House Bookshop in the High Street. ■
