9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: A course modification form is being submitted to change the name of AGED 404. It was formerly called Program Planning in Agricultural Education. Updating the name to “Methods in AGED” makes it more aligned with similar courses in the department. AGED 408 was proposed as a new class under previous staff and not yet developed or implemented. Upcoming curriculum changes will require additional restructuring, so developing and offering the class at this point will not benefit the program. ANTH 421 was moved from Major Requirements to Supporting Coursework. Elective credit hours were updated to reflect 5 additional credit hours based on the changes to AGED 408. 9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: The curriculum is being modified to include cross-listed HO/PS courses and to include new courses that are needed to meet the demand in Precision and Production agriculture of today. Precision agriculture is of such importance we are adding a required Precision Ag elective course in the Agronomy core. To gain 3 credits for the precision agriculture elective, ENGL 379 has been changed to an elective with other marketing and communication courses. Students will meet their advanced writing requirement with ABS 475-475L.) Laurie Stenberg Nichols 2/11/14 Institutional Authorization (President or Designee) Date Submitted

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: The changes requested amount to refinements in coordination with the Construction Management and Interior Design programs and refinements of specifying SGR requirements that are mutually beneficial to a pre-professional architecture program and a liberal arts education.

Requirements to fulfill the SGR#3 are being revised to better meet the needs of our students. Former requirements were for students to take POLS 210 State & Local Government and an open elective from the approved list. SGR#3 Requirements are being moved to ANTH 210 Cultural Anthropology and PSYC 101 General Psychology.

ARCH 121 Building Thinking is a course number change from ARCH 131 to align the course with ARCH 321 and ARCH 421. (Middle integer “2” in our department indicates a media focused course.)

ARCH 471 Building Codes & Regulations (2) will replace ID 329-329L Building Systems II & Lab (2). The Interior Design program is only offering ID 329-329-L when needed in their degree plan, which is less than once a year. We require an annual version of the course to support our students.

GE 241 Applied Mechanics (3) will replace CM332 Building Construction Methods & Systems (3) because GE 241 and CM 353 are a sequence. Change made at the request of the Construction and Operations Management Department.

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: Currently, all students take NURS 865 and 870 at the end of the DNP program. Each course has 240 hours clinical attached as well as some didactic content, but these are not supervised clinical hours, nor are they differentiated from work completed as part of the Practice Innovation Project (PIP). One new course (NURS 875) will replace the clinical hours from the current NURS 865/870 (see separate application). The other new course (NURS 880) will replace the didactic content and add project hours (see separate application). By making one course (NURS 875) clearly clinical and the other (NURS 880) clearly project, the program is more transparent and accountable.

New regulations for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) mandate that DNP students must complete 1000 hours of supervised clinical practice post baccalaureate degree. The existing courses (NURS 765, 771, 777) already have over 1000 hours. Thus Bachelor’s to DNP students will not be required to take this course, but may elect up to 3 credits of additional preceptored clinical in NURS 875. Students’ experiences will be individualized with the Program Coordinator and Associate Dean to ensure they reflect the purpose of the clinical hours.

Students in the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) program complete the majority of their clinical hours through the University of Missouri – Kansas City as these are specialized clinical hours. The existing courses (N5547N [40], N5564N [40]. N5566N [40], N5572NI [300], N5572NII [300]) (from University of Missouri – Kansas City) result in a minimum of 720 clinical hours. In order to achieve the required 1000 hours for the DNP, NNP students will follow the same path as a post-Master’s student and take 5 credits of NURS 875 (ratio – 1 credit:60 hours). Specific course objectives and activities will be individualized in consultation with the Coordinator of the DNP program and the Associate Dean Graduate Nursing. Students in this program will take NURS 880 – the reconfigured DNP project course. The other new addition is a new regulation that states that Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NNP) must have pathophysiology across the lifespan in addition to neonatal pathophysiology. Our Family Nurse Practitioners already take that at SDSU, it has been added to the NNP program. Laurie Stenberg Nichols 12/11/13 Institutional Authorization (President or Designee) Date Submitted

Additional Academic Requirements: Students will be admitted into junior level EE courses only after they have completed EE 220, 220L, 222, 222L, 245 and 245L with minimum grades of “C.” Students will not be permitted to enroll in subsequent courses for which EE 220, EE 222, or EE 245 is a prerequisite until the above requirement has been met. Students must also pass all junior electrical engineering courses (with the exception of EE 385) prior to taking EE 464 (Senior Design I). In addition to the graduation requirements and academic performance specified in this catalog, to earn the Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering a student must earn a CGPA of 2.0 or higher for all his/her Electrical Engineering courses combined. All graduating seniors are required to take the Fundamentals of Engineering examination which leads to professional registration.

ATTACHMENT I 38

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: Students do not have the necessary background and skills needed for junior level courses until they have completed all sophomore level courses with the minimum grade requirement. Additionally, seniors use the materials learned in their junior level courses during the course of the first semester of EE 464 (Senior Design I) and cannot be successful in this course without the prerequisite material. The exception is EE 385 which is a stand-alone EE course. Laurie Stenberg Nichols 2/11/14 Institutional Authorization (President or Designee) Date Submitted

9. Explanation of the Change: Currently students complete HNS 490 for 3 credits. Due to feedback from students and the need to more clearly communicate the content of the seminar, the program is proposing 3 separate 1 credit seminars – HNS 380 Professional Development (new course), HNS 480 Certification Exam Preparation (new course), and HNS 490 Seminar (existing course). Additionally, due to student feedback we have proposed to alter the previous requirement of CHRD 475 to include an “or” statement, so students can take CHRD 475 or PSYC 417. Many of our students take PSYC as a prerequisite course for graduate programs or as part of minor requirements. The PSYC 417 course is 3 credits and the CHRD 475 course is 2 credits. Therefore, the total number of hours required for the major increases by one if they select this option. The graduation requirements are being changed to address to assure students have minimum understanding of the subject matter and are adequately prepared to enter the work force. 8. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: These changes address curricular development in the College of Education and Human Sciences (course deletions and substitutions) as well as the expanding nature of the GPIDEA program to respond to the needs of Family and Consumer Science graduates. The expanded curriculum will support those students seeking professional development (for currently practicing teachers) and those seeking teacher preparation coursework (for those who want to enter the field of education). 9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: Due to fluctuations in enrollment and various competitors entering the market, we have assessed our program and determined a need to adjust our curriculum and offerings. Also, our curriculum has not been re-evaluated in 12 years. Based on our history and experience with students, we make the following recommendations:

The Family Financial Planning Specialization of the MS in Human Sciences proposes to reduce the number of credit hours in the M.S. from 42 to 36, with 27 credits (9 courses) of required coursework: Fundamentals of Family Financial Planning, Insurance Planning for Families, Investing for Family’s Future, Personal Income Taxation, Family, Employment Benefits, and Retirement Planning, Estate Planning for Families, Financial Counseling, a new course titled Financial Theory and Research I, and Financial Planning Case Study. The remaining 9 credits (three courses) will be electives, choosing from the following: Practicum, Military Personal Financial Readiness, Housing and Real Estate in FFP, Family Theory and Research II, Professional Practices in Financial Planning, Research Methods & Statistics, Master’s Research Projects, Seminar, and Thesis. 9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE:

The requested program changes are to bring the landscape architecture curriculum more in line with Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB) standards, enhance curriculum and prepare students.

PSYC 101 (3) has been designated to fulfill SGR 3. Students will continue to be able to pick one additional course of their choice from the SGR 3 list.

ATTACHMENT I 58

Supporting Coursework decreased with the removal of CM 210-210L (3), MATH 120 (3) and GE 123 (1). New courses were introduced in the Major Requirements to replace the course deletions.

LA 423-423L (3) will replace CM 210-210L to prepare students by offering a hands-on construction experience. The program attracts students with both a design/build (green industry) and professional practice (landscape architecture design industry) career interest. The new course will provide hands-on construction experience and provides students from both career paths a greater understanding of the relationship between design theory and design practice. This course is essential as the program moves forward with the accreditation process to provide the knowledge and experience.

GE 123 (1) is being replaced with LA 231 (2) and LA 232 (2). A revised LA 231 and LA 232 will split the subject matter covered in into two logical divisions: computer-aided drawing (LA 231) and computer enhanced presentation graphics (LA 232).

HO 222-222L (3) was removed from the Technical Electives and added to the major requirements. An understanding and knowledge of turf is very important for Landscape Designers, Landscape Contractors and Landscape Architects because it is a majority of the total square foot area of almost every landscape project.

In addition, course number and nomenclature modifications now follow the proper sequence of classes by year taken in the curriculum. Laurie Stenberg Nichols

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: The reinstatement of the Master of Science Family Nurse Practitioner specialization was approved by Board of Regents in December 2013. Admission to this program ceased after 2008. Since then NURS 675 has been added to all of the MS and DNP programs since (approximately 2008), and is critical content for direct care practice for advanced practice nurses in an increasingly diverse state. 9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: South Dakota State University College of Nursing requests this curriculum change for the RN Upward Mobility Program (A Bachelor of Science program designed for licensed Registered

ATTACHMENT I 63

Nurses who earned an associate degree or a diploma in nursing and who would like to complete a bachelor’s degree). The proposed change includes:

Students will no longer be required to complete CHEM 108-108L, Organic and Biochemistry and Lab (5) to meet SGR #6. Rather, students will be able to complete MICR 231-231L, General Microbiology and Lab.

4 credits of electives were added to the college requirements due to the deletion of CHEM 108-108L from the list of required courses.

Leaders in the departments who teach RN Upward Mobility courses agreed the RN student population has gained the knowledge required to be successful in the courses, as evidenced by successful performance on NCLEX exam, and licensure as an RN. The RN Upward Mobility program within the College of Nursing required a different curriculum than the traditional baccalaureate program. RNs transfer existing courses to SDSU which are equivalent to general education and nursing pre-requisite requirements, and complete remaining requirements at SDSU.

Dramatic changes in the health-care industry have transformed the role of nurses. Due to vast changes in the complexity of patient health care needs and expansive environments of health care delivery systems, associate and diploma prepared nurses practice within complex healthcare systems in diverse environments. The experience these professional nurses have gained in their positions translates to knowledge beyond that of the traditional nursing student in specific content areas, and supports the curriculum change.

The need to advance education for associate and diploma nurses has never been greater. Associate and diploma nurses, all licensed, practicing professionals, gain much experience as patient care partners, which prepares them for advanced coursework leading to the Bachelor of Science, major in Nursing degree at SDSU. The goal is to significantly increase the number of associate and diploma RN’s advancing to the Bachelor of Science, major in Nursing. The College of Nursing seeks to adjust curriculum to respond to this need. Due to the significant changes in this program, we recognize the need for changes in the pre-requisites and courses from that of the traditional BSN through the College of Nursing. 9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: Over the past decade there has been growing evidence for a need for change in health professions education. The Institute of Medicine, as well as numerous national nursing education organizations, have all identified the need for dramatic reform in nursing education programs nationwide to reflect contemporary nursing practice, provide essential content without an overburdened curriculum, and offer multicontexual learning approaches by promoting student-centered learning. This revised curriculum plan follows a Concept Based Model as a means of addressing issues of organizing, sorting, categorizing and making sense of an unprecedented amount of information and research. Current research about learning and the brain suggests that individuals learn by connecting new information to familiar or similar information previously integrated and categorized. This curriculum revision offers an adult platform for improved learning. The conceptual foundation of the curriculum, with a strong emphasis on life-span, health-illness, and care delivery continuums, was developed to manage excessive curricular content and foster a conceptual learning environment at the undergraduate level. A characteristic of conceptual learning environments is student-centered learning, which differs from the existing curriculum

ATTACHMENT I 67

which has been content driven, using instructor-centered approaches. Rather than memorizing thousands of facts, students learn how to access, evaluate, manage and use information in the clinical reasoning process. Revision in the curriculum will allow greater flexibility in selecting appropriate settings for the clinical learning experiences. Twenty-first century healthcare is increasingly moving out of acute care hospital settings into community environments. Conceptual learning readily occurs across environmental settings, which provides greater flexibility in designing learning experiences that meet health care needs of South Dakota and surrounding areas. Courses will be phased in over several years, as other courses are removed from the program. 52 credits of current courses will be deleted and 50 credits of new coursework will be added. Program Form #3 updated AAC 02/2009

SDSU admits post master’s students who already are certified Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) (e.g. already a Nurse Practitioner). For these students, accreditation procedures mandate that schools are to document the supervised clinical practice in the master’s degree and “top up” to 1000 in the DNP degree program. Informal research indicates that all APN programs have at least 520 hours, thus the program chose up to 8 credits at a ratio of 1 credit = 60 hours clinical to accommodate all possibilities. The Department will document the hours required and the individual plan of study for certified APN students will reflect the credits required. Course objectives will be individualized with the Program Coordinator and Associate Dean to ensure they reflect the purpose of the clinical hours. The increase in credits for this program affects 10-15% of the total DNP enrollment over the last number of years. Very few students will actually require 8 credits of NURS 875, graduates of SDSU, for example generally have over 700 clinical hours in their master’s program, therefore they will need a maximum of 5 credits, increasing their program by 3 credits (300 hours = 5 credits, 29 + 5 = 34, compared to 31 under the old system). Current courses (NURS 765, 771, 777) already meet this requirement. With these changes, students in this program will see their program credits drop by 2. However, students may elect an additional 1-3 credits of precepted clinical practice. In that case, course objectives will be individualized with the Program Coordinator and Associate Dean to ensure they reflect the purpose of the clinical hours. 9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: The reinstatement of the Post-Master’s Family Nurse Practitioner certificate was approved by Board of Regents in December 2013. Admission to this program ceased after 2008. NURS 675 has been added to all of the MS and DNP programs since 2008, and is critical content for direct care practice for advanced practice nurses in an increasingly diverse state. NURS 765 had one credit added in 2008. NURS 777 originally had 360 hours clinical, for a program total of 840 clinical hours. Accreditation guidelines have required 1000 hours clinical for the BS – DNP program. Rather than require post MS-FNP students who are seeking the DNP complete additional clinical hours to total 1000 (as is the case now), including the 1000 hours at the post-Master’s certificate level better prepares the student for practice as a NP and increases the flexibility they have should they choose to later pursue a DNP degree. 9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: The request is to streamline the Recreation Administration Minor and have applicable recreation courses available instead of related courses. This revised minor also addresses changes/deletions of university courses. The revised minor offers more options for students based on interest of outdoor/park areas or sports and profit or nonprofit organizations.

Minor course modifications have been submitted to update PRM courses to reflect the RECR prefix effective Fall 2014.

Students previously selected from two groups of elective courses. Students selected 6 credit hours from PRM 300-300L, RECR 342 and RECR 362 to fulfill recreation electives. The second group of electives allowed students to pick an additional 5 credits of electives from a group. The program will now have students select 9 elective hours from a modified listing of recreation courses.
