There is a discussion going around on Facebook: is it proper for Macy’s to open on Thanksgiving? Most of my Facebook friends who have posted on the matter seem to be opposed. This column is not about the right or wrong of Macy’s deci-sion. It’s about Thanksgiving in general, traditions and changes.

The argument against stores opening on Thanksgiving is that it’s a family time and people shouldn’t have to be away from their families to work on this holiday. It’s a sound argument. My mother worked for years at Macy’s and I doubt that she would have wanted to work on Thanksgiv-ing. However, Macy’s employees in New York have worked for years to bring us the Thanksgiving Day parade that they spon-sor. Watching it on Thanksgiving morning is a part of my own tradition.

My father, on the other hand, worked for Eastern Air Lines. Planes fly on Thanks-giving; it’s a big travel day and for many years he worked at the Atlanta airport on the holiday. Sometimes he was home for the traditional dinner and sometimes he wasn’t.

Airline employees aren’t the only ones working on the holiday. The list is long of those who make a difference on Thanksgiving so the rest of us can have a safe, comfortable day: policemen, firemen, EMT’s, nurses, doctors, other medical per-sonnel, and our military keep us safe and healthy on Thanksgiving; and the clerks who keep gas stations/convenience stores and grocery stores open, and restaurant workers who provide food for those who prefer to eat out on Thanksgiving. There are also football players and others who provide the day’s entertainment, television and radio news reporters, as well as our delivery persons who make sure we have the newspapers with all the Black Friday inserts.

Traditions: for some it is a day of lei-sure and family and for some a day of work. As a married couple, Allan and I worked hard to make Thanksgiving a family day, creating our own traditions. The first year we were married, we invited our two fami-lies for Thanksgiving dinner. My family was early; his was late, the turkey was dry, but we were all together and we survived the first test – after the wedding – of family

united. We’ve learned to go with the flow as

the saying goes; maintaining traditions when they work and letting go when nec-essary. Thanksgiving 2001 found our son Peter an American student studying at the University of Ulster in Colerine, Northern Ireland. An original plan for the Ameri-can students to have a joint dinner did not materialize and Peter found himself alone, cooking a frozen turkey dinner. Back home, we enjoyed a family dinner, miss-ing our son on Thanksgiving for the first since his birth. Now that both of our chil-dren have grown up, married and moved away, we have alternated Thanksgiving and Christmas with their in-laws.

As one who doesn’t even like to shop on Black Friday, I don’t plan to head for the mall on Thanksgiving Day. But I am grateful to those who work on Thanksgiv-ing to provide necessary services to protect and make our lives safer and better.

Heather Donahue

By Heather DonahueBoth my ex and I received inheri-

tances while still married. His inheritance went towards the down payment of our house, and my inheritance went towards bills. When we divorced, our inheritances essentially can-celed each other out and neither one of us pursued reimbursement.

But, that’s not always the case.

Typically, an inheritance received during the course of a marriage is considered the non-marital property of the recipient. But not always.

Similarly, student loans are typically considered the sole debt of the person who obtained them. However, you may have put your spouse through school and there-for want long-term compensation. To get this compensation, you may be responsible for some of your spouse’s student loans.

Some things to consider regarding marital and non-marital assets and debts:

Generally, assets obtained and debts incurred during the course of a marriage are considered marital and subject to equi-

table division.Premarital assets and debts are those

brought into a marriage. Typically, any increase or decrease of these assets and debts that occurs during the course of the marriage is consid-ered marital.

Comingling of non-marital or premarital assets can lead to these assets being considered marital in a divorce (and thus subject to equi-table division).

Consider a prenuptial agree-ment before marrying, or a postnup-tial agreement if already married,

to protect yourself and your assets.Be sure you’re protecting what’s yours!

FROM FATHER TO SONBy Robert Meyring

My Dad forgets my name now, some-times. He usually remembers who I am when he sees me, but I can see that he’s often searching to recall my name. Then, like catching a thread, he’ll remember that the last time he played tennis, he played against me, and he lost. As a testament to how athletic my father was, the last time he played was actually the only time I ever beat my Dad in tennis and he was in his late 70s then.

I would like to think that by staying active I can prolong the inevitable effects of time on my mind and body. From my family history, it appears that dementia, cognitive disorder; Alzheim-er’s and Parkinson’s disease are lurking on my distant horizon. My grandfather worked as a lawyer over 50 years and was of sound mind when he died of a stroke. When I was a teen, we took care of my grandmother who was physically healthy but with Alzheimer’s disease was mentally gone, fast. Their child, my father retired over 20 years ago, stayed fairly active, and in the last 5 years has declined mentally, similar to his mother.

My brother whose life was nearly cut short in a severe accident a few years ago

has a lawyer who is in his mid-90s who has been practicing law for over 70 years. This man told me a story about when he had cancer, which was operable, and he had

retired at the same time because he was in his late 70s. The doctor said he could not work for at least six months. The old lawyer told me that during the six months he could feel his brain deteriorating every single day. As soon as he was medically released, he came out of retirement, went back to work because he said it’s what he enjoys doing; it’s what he does. As I spent an hour with my brother’s

attorney I learned a lot - or I just heard a lot of what I already knew.

It is my long-term goal to be a long-practicing elder attorney that has the power to mentor younger lawyers as I have been mentored. My daily goals are to enjoy my law practice and practice in a manner that makes my attorney grandfather and my father proud. My lifetime goals include remaining physically and mentally healthy enough to enjoy and remember the times I have with my son as long as I can.

By Peter Witkiewicz, CSASome years ago, I wrote an article

which was printed in an issue of the Bright Side newspaper about a wonderful-but-little-known Veterans’ benefit called Aid & Attendance. With this benefit, qualified vet-erans and their spouses with health issues can get a substantial amount of money each month to pay for assistance with such personal care needs like bathing, toileting and dressing. How much? Up to $2,085 per month for a married veteran with a spouse, up to $1,758 per month for a single vet-eran, up to $1,381 for the spouse of a living veteran, and up to $1,130 per month for the surviving spouse of a veteran. That’s a lot of money, and it buys a lot of help.

I am writing about it again because with each passing year there are ever so many more veterans who need this benefit to live more comfortably, more fully, and more happily. If you are a veteran in need of this kind of help or if you are a veteran’s spouse who would benefit from Aid & Attendance, you may contact the Veterans Administration directly, or you can contact Comfort Keepers at 678-354-0102. Calls from family members are welcome, too. If

you call Comfort Keepers, we can answer many of your questions. We can also con-nect you with folks who are trained to assist you in filling out the benefit application accurately and completely. This help is provided at no charge to the veteran or the veteran’s spouse, and it often minimizes the waiting time for benefit approval. And for many veterans and their spouses, the quicker they get this benefit, the better.

Interested in learning more? Call.Peter Witkiewicz is the owner and

operator of Comfort Keepers, a local com-pany that provides in-home care to the adults of Cobb County. For more informa-tion call 678-354-0102.

HELP FOR AILING VETERANS AND THEIR SPOUSES

Lt. Lane Cadwell took command of the Criminal Investigations Unit in the Powder Springs Police Department during the economic downturn and at times was the sole investigator in the unit. “I applaud Det. Lt. Cadwell for his unselfish attitude, continuous hard work and dedication to the city of Powder Springs,” said Chief Char-lie Sewell.

By Paula SandersIt’s important to talk about and docu-

ment your healthcare wishes before a healthcare crisis arises. Almost half of Americans say they would rely on family or friends to carry out their wishes about end-of-life care, but most have never expressed those wishes.

Five Wishes (www.agingwithdignity.org) helps people express how they want to be treated if they are seriously ill and unable to speak for themselves. It addresses all aspects of people’s needs, including: medi-cal, personal, emotional and spiritual.

Five Wishes lets your family and doc-tors know:

• Who you want to make health care decisions for you when you can’t make them.

• The kind of medical treatment you want or don’t want.

• How comfortable you want to be.• How you want people to treat you.• What you want your loved ones to

know. There are two types advance directives:

a health care power of attorney, where a person designates someone to make medi-cal decisions on their behalf if they are unable to do so; a living will which out-lines a person’s end of life wishes, includ-

ing the type of medical treatment they want or don’t want.

Additionally, hospice is an end-of-life care option that focuses on the patient, not the disease, and is tailored to the needs of each patient and family. It includes expert pain management by treating physical symptoms, while providing emotional and spiritual support. Hospice is about choice – giving people the ability to decide where they want to die, and to do so with dignity and comfort.

Understanding your end-of-life care options is vital to preserve your quality of life at the end of life. For more information about advance directives or hospice care, call VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Atlanta Metro at (404) 843-6500, or visit www.VITAS.com.

MABLETON WINS STEM EDUCATION AWARD The Technology Association of Geor-

gia (TAG) and the TAG Education Collab-orative (TAG-Ed) announced that Mableton Elementary School has been named as the Elementary category winner for the 2014 Georgia STEM Education Awards.

The Georgia STEM Education Awards recognizes schools, programs, and compa-nies for outstanding efforts and achieve-ments in supporting and promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education in Georgia.

Winners competed in eight different categories in the statewide event. “It was truly a challenge to choose from among the many applicants from around Georgia,” said Tino Mantella, president & CEO of TAG. “We applaud this year’s winners for standing out as leaders in Georgia’s educa-tional community.”

Winners were announced during a spe-cial awards gala on Sept. 26, at the Savan-nah International Trade and Convention Center. The event was sponsored in part by Promethean and Cisco Systems Inc.

“It is so gratifying to see STEM edu-cation gaining momentum throughout the state of Georgia,” said Michael Robertson,

executive director of TAG-Ed. “In order for our students to be prepared for tomorrow’s careers, they must first acquire strong ana-lytical and problem solving skills through rigorous coursework in school. The pro-grams highlighted today are leading the way in this effort and sharing best practices that will prepare our students for the chal-lenges ahead. “

Mableton Elementary winning the TAG Award for its ongoing implementa-tion of a STEM program at the school.

NOTES & NOTICES

South Cobb Lions Club recently cel-ebrated their 62nd year serving the South Cobb Area of Mableton and Austell.

Magician Dennis Aloia was the enter-tainment at the South Cobb Lions Club Celebration held at the South Cobb Com-munity Center. A Celebration of service as the Lion Motto: “WE SERVE” under the leadership of Lion President Carol Fox. As in the Lion’s Emblem, the Lion’s head is looking both back and forward, so is the South Cobb Lions Club with our great past experience and moving forward to have an even greater future in the community.

The club members most recently have served in the community by assisting with eye screenings at Mableton Elemen-tary School and other area eye screenings in conjunction with the Georgia Lions Lighthouse.

Additionally, an eye clinic was held Oct. 17 at South Cobb Eye Center with Dr. Brian Saunders, a South Cobb Lion member, with Assistance of Tiffany Eller-bee of the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foun-dation and members of the South Cobb Lions Club.

The services of the eye clinic are free. Dr. Saunders allows use of his office and provides his professional services while

members of the South Cobb Lions become the staff at the clinic. The 17 eye examina-tions and fitting for glasses were done at the clinic.

The Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foun-dation Optical Lab produces the eyeglasses which are mailed to the patients. The ser-vices of the Lighthouse staff member, the Lighthouse Optical Lab and eyeglasses are paid for by the Lions of Georgia from their donations to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation.

The Club’’s annual BBQ in conjunc-tion with the StoryTelling Festival at the Historic Mableton House was held Oct. 18 and 19. It was another great success. Our thanks to the community for allowing us to serve and your support.

Projects on-going at present are sale of community “DISCOUNT CARDS” and very shortly the annual PECAN sales, all available from any South Cobb Lion Member or contact us: 470-554-2128, email [email protected] or find us on Facebook.

If interested in becoming a Lion to SERVE your community - the club meets at 6:30PM, 1st and 3rd Monday each month at the South Cobb Community Center 620 Lions Club Drive Mableton, Georgia 30126.
