There was a hushed expectation as the choir began to sing on Christmas Eve. Allan was in the choir loft in the tenor section suppressing a laugh as he heard the voice of four-month old granddaugh-ter Addie adding her music to that of the choir. It was just a brief expression of joy that added to the beautiful service.

Both granddaughters, Addie and three-month old Lilly, were so good during the hour-long candlelight service. And it was so special for all of us to be together. I had arrived early, riding to the church with Allan since the choir needed to rehearse prior to the service. I staked out a back row in case the babies were staying in the ser-vice but needed an easy exit.

It drew close to 6 p.m. and still no children and grandchildren. Quietly tex-ting back and forth, I learned that Peter’s ailing car battery needed a boost. With each family needing their own car with baby seat, it was important for it to start. Fortunately, Drew and Katie were still at the house and could jump his car.

Christmas Eve set the stage for a happy, serenely chaotic family visit. We adapted well to shifting from a sedate two-person plus cat household, to a six adults, two babies, one cat and one dog, noisy but happy household.

At the beginning of 2011, we had only an inkling of what joy the year would bring. We knew, from an announcement by Katie and Drew, that one baby was on the way, but it wasn’t until 2011 began that we found out from Peter and Ann-Bailey, that there would be two grandchildren on the way.

Overall, 2011 was an outstanding year. Despite ending the year with a broken elbow from a November fall and a totaled car from being rear-ended just before Christmas, the positives overwhelmed the negatives. Keeping a business running in an uncertain economy has kept us on edge, but we saw progress from the previous year. We continued to be strengthened by our faith, our family and our friends.

And now, at the start of 2012, we begin the season of UN.....UN-decorating; UN-overeating; UN-vacationing; UN-sleeping late. Now it’s back to work; back to eating moderately; back to regular hours. It was

an exceptionally special holiday season and I miss it....especially the visit from our children and granddaughters.

As we begin 2012, we can not predict what this New Year will bring. We hope and pray that it will bring good health to all of our family and friends; business success to all of those who do business with us; and a renewed optimism for all Americans.

Robert Meyring

After I finished my law degree at Emory and shortly before I was licensed to practice law, a lawyer offered me employment of a curious nature. He offered to give me one half of the legal fee for all the clients I would bring to his law firm. I thought that over. It sounded easy enough to find clients, but some-thing was odd about his offer. So I went back to Emory and talked about it with one of my former professors who bluntly advised me that the offer was ethically questionable and that I should stay away from that attorney. In short, I would have been used by the attorney as a “capper” or a “runner” and the attorney would have been fee splitting with a non-attorney, me.

Did you know that lawyers are not allowed to split legal fees with non-law-yers? It’s true. It’s actually one of the most basic rules of lawyer ethics: No fee split-ting with non-attorneys. If a non-lawyer friend of an attorney asks for any por-tion of the fee from a contingent fee legal case, that’s a bad situation. The “friend” is asking for an unethical fee split or a kick-back. Either way, if that money is paid to the friend, that attorney’s license to prac-tice law would be properly revoked and the attorney disbarred.

The unethical practice of “capping and running” occurs when lawyers hire non-lawyers to sign up new clients. It can and does result in disbarment for the attorney as it did last month for two veteran Georgia attorneys Steven F. Freedman and Thomas C. Sinowski, partners in an injury law prac-tice. The state Supreme Court disbarred the two attorneys stating “[We] consider their offenses very serious,” noting the

two lawyers had admitted violating ethics rules against paying for client referrals and

splitting fees with a non-lawyer. “Their conduct was egregious...Their scheme was highly organized and very lucrative; and it was not short lived. They were motivated by greed and they are not remorse-ful.”

From the time I began practic-ing law, right up to the present, I find ethical questions and integrity challenges happen every day. How those questions are answered form the public reputation of the law firm

and the ethics of the Firm’s attorneys.Robert S. Meyring, offers free 10

This summer’s produce from the garden included tomatoes, squash, egg-plant, okra, green peppers, hot peppers, broccoli, green beans and potatoes.

At season’s end, Walker and a col-league toured the CAMP office and warehouse. “Do you have any special requests?” Walker asked Jay Cantrell, food pantry manager for CAMP.

“We can use everything, and we can use all the okra you’ve got,” Cantrell said. He was serious. The ideal okra pods will be no more than a few inches long, he explained, holding out a finger. Getting the right-sized pods will mean that volunteers will need to check plants frequently next year during the growing season, snipping selectively just as pods reach the right size. It’ll be another good reason for volunteers to visit, just as a small team visited recently to dress the garden for winter.

While some components of Mableton’s renaissance as a livable community wait in part on the resurgence of a real estate industry still reeling from the enormous shocks of the recent Great Recession, the garden is thriving.

More than 100 middle and high school males representing south Cobb area one schools spent a day together in October at South Cobb High School. Last summer, the principals of South Cobb High School, Pebblebrook High School, Lindley Middle, Lindley 6th Grade Academy, Garrett Middle, and Floyd Middle planned the inaugural Young Men’s Conference to inspire, moti-vate, and empower the young men toward excellence, in school and in life.

Students spent the morning in work-shop sessions focused on career choices, communication, finance, military service, understanding the law, and motivation for academic and behavioral wellness. Guest speakers included Rashid Brown, Mike

Howard, Eric Ludgood, Bill Cheek, Al Walton, Ryan Jones, Andrew Guerrier, and Nathan Wade. During the afternoon formal dining lunch session, Eric Cherry taught an etiquette session to the young men throughout the full course meal. After lunch, students were able to ask questions of a professional men’s panel to learn about personal sources of motivation and respon-sible decision-making practices.

Parents joined their students for the afternoon session which consisted of a pow-erful message by Alex Ellis on improving the male image.

Attending the conference were Rep. David Wilkerson, Assistant Superintendent Robert Benson, School Board Member Tim Stultz, Area 1 principals and staff.

South Cobb High School has fielded its first ever Debate Team this year, and the young men and women are already making a name for themselves. The Eagles are competing in the Urban Debate league sponsored by Emory University.

At their first competition held at Langston Hughes High School, the South Cobb students took the top prize and won the overall High School Category beating teams from both public and private high schools from the Atlanta, Dekalb, Fulton and Cartersville areas. The team placed 2nd overall during its second debate with many of the students winning awards in the Outstanding Speech and Articulation category.

According to the team’s teacher advi-sor, Natalie Hope, a member of the school’s

English Department, “This is a monumen-tal achievement for our students to compete so well against other teams who have more than 2+ years of debate experience. These students are doing their school proud!”

A Gospel Concert will be held at Con-cord Baptist Church, 4494 Floyd Road. Mableton, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 15 at 11 a.m.. Special Guest is John Lanier, singer, writer, publisher of a gospel news magazine and a preacher. He has sung with Naomi & Seegos, Tony Gore and has appeared on the Bill Gaither concerts. Everyone is welcome and bring a friend, you will be blessed. Contact Cindy 404-376-7103 for any info.
