Has your Sponsor sug-gested to you that you
get involved in service? Having a service commitment helps us to stay clean and get
out of “self ” and be of service to “others”. H&I is an awesome service commitment . . . , we believe that any addict can stop using. lose the desire to
use, and find a new way to live. H&I brings NA meetings/panels to addicts who cannot access outside meetings. We go into jails, juvenile facili-ties, hospitals and rehabs to bring the message of HOPE to addicts. There is only One Promise in Narcotics Anonymous and that is Freedom from active Addiction and our message is Hope.

Destination Addiction
I had grown up going to church with my family but my understanding and com-mitment was superficial at best. Going way back in my memory I recall reading about many different religions and philosophies. I don’t believe I had rejected my childhood religion but it seemed I couldn’t find the same faith or contentment oth-ers appeared to have. In my search to find whatever was missing I did indeed get exposure to a considerable amount of positive thought and inspiration. Intoxica-tion across a broad spectrum not only failed to bring relief but introduced serious difficulties that compounded my discomfort and sense of being lost.
When I had the good fortune to receive the gift of desperation our twelve step fellowship was here waiting for me. As I attended meetings and read our literature I remember writing down how I desperately wanted to be able to just sit quietly and be ‘okay’. As I progressed through the twelve steps one of the gifts I received was the realization that I didn’t have to ask for or wait for everything to be ‘okay’. It was already happening! I could sit quietly and be at peace, life was already ‘okay’. Not to say that life was how I thought it should be or that I had gotten to the top of the mountain and could now relax. No, not like that at all.
It was another new sense of freedom realizing that I was on a journey to be sa-vored, a journey with no destination. In my new life shaped around our program I saw some similarities between our program and my previous readings of philoso-phies and religions. One that stood out was the illusion that getting the next thing that I sought would make everything ‘okay’. It could be a better job, more money, a new romantic interest, a hairstyle, tanning, weight loss, new furniture, a geo-graphical change… anything I thought I had to have to make my life better. When I apply the template of our program to my current existence I realize I am either ‘okay’ right now or I’m not.
So I ask myself a question, have I been suffering from destination addiction? Have I been like a hamster spinning the wheel and thinking if I just get this next something everything will be ‘okay’? Getting that next something is not what I need. Adjusting my attitude and reminding myself of all that I have to be grateful for can make me ‘okay’. If I’m not happy with the life I have today and I’m not doing anything to change it, shame on me.
My personal experience and my observations are that when I make use of our program I am not only ‘okay’ most of the time but I seem to attract good things and good people. This in turn seems to attract people that need help and we are able and willing to help them. And those times when I’m not ‘okay’ I’m in the midst of people that can and will help me. And the circle keeps turning…
