demands accuracy, course management and a full range

of shot-making skills in order to score well. I can think of

few courses better suited to match play golf, with some

superb risk-and-reward holes to tempt the players.

Our thanks go to Gary van Loggerenberg and his team

at Sanlam for their loyal support of the SA Amateur and

amateur golf in general. It is a strong partnership, and one

that we value and hope to continue to build on in the future.

I’d also like to thank Don Gammon and his team

at Durban CC, the club captain and the members for

allowing us to use the course this week. Congratulations

on getting the course into excellent shape.

To the competitors this week: I wish you the very best

of luck and I trust that you will enjoy the KwaZulu-Natal

hospitality as you look to etch your name in history,

alongside some of the greatest players in the game.

On behalf of the South African Golf Association,

I would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to

all tournament competitors, media, sponsors and

spectators to the 2018 Sanlam South African Amateur

Championship at Durban Country Club.

The SA Amateur is the flagship event on our South

African amateur circuit and, together with the recent

SA Stroke Play and African Amateur, makes up the

‘Big Three’ of our men’s amateur events. Having these

tournaments run in succession encourages a number

of top international players and teams to make the trip

out to South Africa and I’d like to thank all foreign players,

teams and federations for supporting our events.

The SA Amateur has a wonderful history that dates

back to 1892 and it is fitting that we should host the

event on one of the country’s most iconic traditional

courses. Durban Country Club is consistently rated

as one of South Africa’s best layouts and while it has

been a regular host to the SA Open, we need to go

back some 40 years, to 1978, to find the last time the

SA Amateur was played here.

Strategy will be key to scoring well on this layout that

H I S T O R Y B E C K O N S

On behalf of GolfRSA, it gives me great pleasure to

welcome you to the Sanlam South African Amateur

Championship, where I look forward to a week of

inspiring golf at one of the country’s most iconic layouts.

It has been a long time since Durban Country Club

has hosted our national amateur championship, but I

can assure all competitors that it is well worth the wait.

Having grown up just south of Durban, I have many fond

memories of playing the course and trying to solve its

endless mysteries. The opening stretch of holes must be

one of the finest (and toughest) in golf, while the closing

stretch is equally compelling.

I’ve always been a fan of match play golf, where two

competitors take on each other and the course – and the

scores of other competitors have no bearing.

There is no room for an off day this week, as to be

crowned SA Amateur champion, the winner will have to

beat six top-quality players. This is the reason the list

of champions on the famous trophy is so formidable.

I’d like to thank all players, officials, media and

spectators who have travelled far and made the effort

to come out and support our national championship.

Thanks too to Sanlam for being such a steady and

strong presence in amateur golf. We truly value working

with you across this and other golfing platforms. Finally,

to all the Durban CC and KZNGU representatives, a

massive thank you for the use of the course and the

hard work you have put in behind the scenes.

W E L C O M E T O D U R B A N C O U N T R Y C L U BIt is my privilege, on behalf of golf operations, the golf

committee and the members of the Durban Country

Club to welcome the president of the South African

Golf Association, Mr Geoff Taylor, his executive and,

most importantly, all the players and their supporters

to the Durban Country Club for the playing of the

Sanlam South African Amateur Championship.

Durban Country Club has a proud history of hosting

major events and we welcome the opportunity to share

our fantastic facilities with both professional and amateur

golfers. The opportunity of hosting one of the oldest and

most prestigious tournaments on the amateur calendar

is an honour for Durban Country Club, whose own

history is shaped by competitve golf at the highest level.

We are very proud of the achievement of Chris

Woollam, the current DCC junior champion, who

won the Proudfoot Trophy in a thrilling playoff at

Humewood in 2017.

Durban Country Club in the past has hosted 17

South African Opens, nine South African Amateur

Championships, three South African Women’s Opens,

the Women’s SA Amateur, numerous winter tour

events and KZN Amateur events, the 2013 & 2014

Volvo Tournament of Champions, and the first Men’s

Inter-Provincial in 1960.

As a club we believe that as custodians of the golf

course it is our duty and privilege not only to care for

and protect the course but to ensure that this facility

is showcased in tournaments both nationally and

internationally and we will continue to do our best

to ensure that prestigious tournaments such as this

are held here.

The Durban Country Club was opened in 1922

and has been rated as one of the world’s top courses

ever since. The classic layout has stood the test of

time and the design has hardly changed. Despite its

apparent lack of length, it provides a stern test to any

golfer’s ability. Good golf is rewarded, but bad golf is

severely punished.

A lot of work has gone into the preparation

for the SA Amateur, and at this point I would like

to thank Mike Wallington, Peter Matkovich, Don

Gammon and all their staff for getting the course

into the great condition that we see today.

In closing, I would like to wish all the golfers from

KZN, and in particular those from Durban Country

Club, the very best over the week. DCC has had

four previous winners: WS Bryant in 1962, Eric

Dalton in 1950, Murray Grindrod in 1960 and David

Suddards in 1981.

It is about time this list was extended!

We are proud of our course and we sincerely hope

that all of you enjoy your week playing the “Grand

Old Lady” as much as our members do and hope that

you leave with good memories of the Durban Country

Club and its hospitality.

A course steeped in history and tradition, Durban Country Club boasts the unique claim of

being the only course on the African continent to be rated in the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World by

Golf Magazine USA. It is also rated in the Top 5 golf courses in South Africa by Golf Digest South Africa.

A combination of lush coastal vegetation, sand dunes and stunning views of the Indian Ocean make this course one of the most unique, and challenging,

in the world. One of the defining characteristics of Durban Country Club are the massive undulations on the fairways, especially noticeable on the 5th, 8th and 17th holes. Offering a typical links layout,

the coastal sand dunes on which the course is built, offer an interesting and sometimes difficult round to

both the amateur and pro golfer alike.Durban Country Club is a shot makers’ course

that you have to think your way around. Most golfers don’t make use of their driver until well into their

round due to the narrowness of the opening holes. The course, overlooking the Blue Lagoon estuary

and the Indian Ocean, has hosted the South African Open 17 times, including the centenary SA Open in 2010, more than any other club in South Africa.

It was also home to the co-sanctioned Volvo Championships in 2013 and 2014.

Louis Oosthuizen Junior Academy prodigy

Christo Lamprecht produced a career-

defining performance at Humewood Golf

Club to become the youngest Sanlam

South African Amateur champion in the 110 year history of

premier international championship.

At 16 years and 25 days, the Southern Cape teenager

surpassed the record set by Thriston Lawrence in 2013 (16 years,

two months and 23 days old) when he defeated fellow George

golfer Caylum Boon 7 & 6 in the 36-hole final.

“This is all a little unreal right now,” gushed the delighted

Pinnacle Point golfer.

“I got knocked out in the first round in my first SA Amateur

last year and I just wanted to try and go further this week. Now I am

the winner and the youngest champion, too. I didn’t know about the

record. I can’t even describe how I feel; it’s like shock and joy and a

whole bunch of stuff mixed up. This is huge, really huge.”

Lamprecht showed maturity beyond his years and the

composure of a true champion as he plotted his way into the

final, never trailing in a single match after he qualified for the

match play stage.

He knocked out Loris Schuepbach from Switzerland in round

one, Andre Nel in the second round and Garrick Higgo in round

three. He then dispatched Indian Yashas Chandra in the quarters

and Dylan Kok in the semi-final.

The final against Boon was no different, as he executed his

game plan to take control. “My game plan in all my matches

was to keep the ball in play and to try to take the lead as early

as possible,” said Lamprecht, who opened with six straight pars.

“I wanted to put my opponent on the back foot so they

wouldn’t get comfortable. That strategy worked well for me right

throughout the match play, so I stuck to my game plan against

Caylum. If you can keep the ball in play at Humewood, you give

yourself chances to score.”

Aside from the 9th hole in the 18 holes and the 7th during the

final loop, Lamprecht hit every fairway and used a red-hot putter

to protect his advantage.

He went 1-up when Boon dropped at the second hole and

went 3-up with back-to-back birdies at seven and eight. He

paid the penalty for a wayward tee shot at nine, but a birdie at

11 and four successive gains from 16 took him to into the final

RECORD SETTER

7

18 holes with a 4-up lead.

“Caylum matched my birdies at 16, 17 and 18

and he was playing really well,” said the GolfRSA

National Squad player. “I knew I would have to keep

up the pressure when we started the last 18 holes.

I went 5-up with a birdie at three (21st hole) and

I was 6-up when Caylum bogeyed the next hole.

Then I hit my tee shot into the bushes on the right

at seven and that cost me a shot.”

Boon found trouble down the left at eighth (26th

hole) and Lamprecht pounced to go 6-up.

He only needed four more holes to wrap up the

final after Boon dropped another shot at the 10th

(28th hole). Although Boon matched Lamprecht’s

birdie at the 11th (29th hole), the writing was on the

wall when the Southern Cape golfer hit his tee shot

to a foot at the par three 12th and boxed the birdie

putt to win.

The young golfer had a hard time containing his

smile as he battled to lift the 45kg trophy.

“I just hoped to gain some good experience

this week and if I did well, it would have been a

bonus,” he said.

“I knew what I had to do to give myself a chance,

especially when we played in a four-club wind in the

quarterfinals and semi-finals and I’m proud of how I

was able to stay calm and keep my head in the game.

I never got ahead of myself and I think the first time

I thought I could actually win this was when we got

though nine on the second trip.

“It’s incredible to think that my name is going on

this trophy. All the Major winners are there. Bobby

Locke is there. Ernie Els. Retief Goosen. Trevor

Immelman. Gosh, I just realised Louis (Oosthuizen)

never won the Sanlam SA Amateur. I hope he is

really proud of me.”
