There are four types of sound in radio:

1. Sound2. Speech3. Silence4. Music

MusicIn radio newscasts music is very important because it sets the atmosphere, mood and tone of the scene. Music allows the audience to feel involved and get a real insight into the vibe of the radio station. With radio this becomes more essential due to the lack of visual cues for the audience. Radio broadcasts often contain a music bed or jingle to make it memorable.

Sound The way in which you use sounds is also another way of setting the scene. For example, if you hear the door closing you know that someone has left the room. Sound offers the audience a slight insight into where the presenter is. For example, if a presenter is presenting from a crime scene there may be police sirens. Also sound effects created by technology may be used for comedy purposes to signify the theme of the newscast.

SilenceWith no sound, the listener has only silence which is useful for a dramatic effect. Silence can also increase tension. For example, if someone is running then you hear a sudden silence. By using silence the audience will understand that the stories are sensitive and serious therefore create sympathy amongst the audience.

Speech Speech is a very important sound code in radio. The tones of voice the radio presenters use is what engages and draws their target audience in. Also if there is only one tone running throughout the newscast the audience will get bored therefore there should be a variety of voices used.
