2011 LEFT ME with many new observations

(or maybe ones I had just forgotten). We saw

family and friends at their best, and family

and friends who were facing new challenges

since the last time we had been together.

I realized that tradition is truly a gift. That

those little rituals we do seemingly out of

habit—almost rote—may one day be some of

our most cherished memories. Reflection is

good. We learn about our successes and fail-

ures this way. Did we keep that resolution we

made last year to savor the moments more

heartily? What about the one to get healthy

and stay healthy? I also realized that though

time passes, people remain who they are and

they are worth appreciating for just that.

So what to do with these observations? I

think I will turn them into resolutions. Like,

listen closely for people who might need

that extra ear in a stressful time, create more

little traditions and cherished memories,

accept people for who they are and learn to

appreciate something in everyone, slow it

down (I make that one every year), and yes,

get healthy.

This issue brings to you our Enterprising

Women, who make financial fitness their

mission. Learn about the Top Northshore

Health Care and Fitness facilities to keep

your goals on track this New Year. And

peruse the Fashion Editor’s Picks for some

environmentally friendly wardrobe options.

Finally, as you reflect on all of the out-

standing Enterprising Women you met in

Sophisticated Woman during 2011, cast your

vote for your favorite with our Enterprising

Woman of the Year ballot.

As you enter 2012 with us, we wish you

every happiness and countless cherished

moments. Happy New Year!

health І ASK DR. W

Q: My friend was shocked to hear her doctor say that her cancer was linked to obesity. Is this true?

A: If you needed yet another reason to jump-

start your New Year’s diet, let this be it. Yes,

it is true that there is a definite link between

obesity and many types of cancer.

When most people hear the word “obesity”

they think of increased risks of diabetes, car-

diovascular disease, and hypertension, yet

they rarely think of cancer. Sadly, this is not

oftentimes reported in the media or readily

discussed. In my own practice, I have many

well-educated patients and have found that

many of them are completely unaware of the

fact that certain types of cancer occur with

increased frequency in obese people.

Obesity also increases the likelihood of

dying from cancer. Higher death rates from

cancers of the esophagus, colon, rectum,

liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidney as well

as Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple

myeloma have all been linked to obesity in

both men and women. Women in particular

are at increased risk of death from cancers

of the breast, uterus, cervix and ovary while

men are also at increased risk of death from

stomach, thyroid and prostate cancer.

Based upon these associations, and the

obesity epidemic, some studies have even

shown that obesity has been estimated to

play a major role in 20 percent of all cancers.

These numbers are indeed staggering. So

when you make your New Year’s resolution

to lose weight, you are also resolving to

become healthier with that weight loss. It is

a great way to begin the New Year!

health І DENTAL

IF YOU HAVE EVER had a filling done, you

probably have noticed some type of lingering

sensitivity to the tooth for a period of time.

This discomfort with biting, or exposure

to certain temperatures will usually pass

within one to two weeks in most cases. This

sensitivity can be caused by several things.

The tooth is protected by enamel, which

has no nerve sensation. The next layer in

is dentin which consists of thousands of

tubules that conduct sensation to the nerve

or pulp of the tooth. Upon cutting into the

dentin to remove decay, these tubules are

opened. Once the decay is removed, the

tooth is thoroughly cleaned and conditioned

prior to placing the white resin filling. Care is

taken by precisely layering the filling, since

this material shrinks as it is cured by a dental

light. This contraction can set up internal

stresses on the tooth causing discomfort

when pressure is applied to the tooth during

chewing. The larger the filling, the greater

risk for post-operative discomfort.

Proper technique when placing a filling

is critical to both the longevity of the res-

toration, as well as post-operative comfort.

Proper isolation to keep saliva and blood

out of the field is of critical importance. The

advantage of these bonded white fillings is

that they truly adhere to the tooth giving

back some of the strength that had been lost

from the cavity. If properly handled, the tooth

can be restored to proper form and function.

If the sensitivity lasts longer than two weeks

it is important to return to your dentist for re-

evaluation. Many times, a simple bite adjust-

ment is all that is needed.

The larger the fi lling, the

greater risk for post-operative

discomfort.

Tooth Sensitivity from Post-Operative Work

for all of us looking to make a change for

the better, either physically, mentally or all-

around, we have no excuses. The Northshore

is teeming with the newest, most revolu-

tionary fitness facilities, to state-of-the-art

health care facilities, so look no further than

this issue.

Learn about The Bar Method, a tried and

true, bar-based fitness routine said to shape,

tone and add flexibility to your body. Our

fitness expert, Matt Slimming, discusses the

difference between just looking fit and actu-

ally being fit. Our range of health profession-

als discuss the ins and outs of hormones,

cancer treatments and prevention, and what

to expect with the latest dental technol-

ogy as well as what to do in an orthodontic

emergency. Magnolia Acupuncture brings

heart of Covington.

No Excuses

The Northshore boasts pristine athletic

clubs which offer individuals as well as fami-

lies, access to the tools they need to begin or

continue on the path to lifelong healthy exer-

cise habits. Even with the fast-paced innova-

tion in fitness, Northshore facilities remain

on the cutting edge. From the most current

fitness trends like Yamuna Body Rolling,

an international phenomenon launch-

ing at Franco’s Athletic Club this month,

and Bodypump and Bodycombat at Stone

Creek Club and Spa, to favorites like Zumba

classes at Star Fitness and strength training

at Freedom Fitness, the options are endless.

Look no further than Trainer’s Choice for

nutritional supplements and supplies.

Unfortunately, fitness does not come in a

bottle, but we can help lead you to a place

where you can achieve it. However you decide

to realize your fitness goals, make no excuses;

make time to read through this issue.

health І FITNESS

A RECENTLY RELEASED study by the

American Heart Association, concluded that

fitness is more important than weight loss.

This extensive study was conducted over

more than 11 years, and included 14,000

people. It showed that people who increased

their cardiovascular fitness had a signifi-

cantly reduced risk of death. It also showed

that a change in body weight did NOT affect

the participants’ risk of death.

No surprise at first glance. We all intui-

tively know that getting fit is good for you.

But when we think about getting healthy

at this time of year, most of us include

dietary change as part of the plan. This study

shows that dieting alone will not necessarily

provide any health benefits. It is much more

important to exercise.

Sure, we all want to look better in a

bathing suit. And summer is not far away.

If we’re going to look how we hope to look,

reducing calorie consumption is probably

important for most of us. However it’s nice

to know that if we don’t get our diet right,

but keep exercising, we are doing more than

enough to get healthier.

So if you know any of those ladies who

stay skinny just by not eating because they

don’t like to work out, tell them about this

article. They may look great, but it’s not

healthy.

If your goal is to look great for the upcom-

ing summer months, start working out now

and stay consistent. Eat right too, and you’ll

be amazed at the results. Just make sure

that you check with your physician and your

physical therapist to ensure that you stay

injury free while you are getting healthy.

Physical Therapist Matt Slimming has been practicing on the Northshore for 17 years and owns STAR Physical Therapy and STAR Fitness Center with facilities in Covington, Folsom and Slidell. He can be reached at 985-893-2845 or www.StarFitnessCenter.com.

Skinny Does not Equal Fit

We all intuitively know that

getting fi t is good for you.

FOR WIFE, MOTHER and former Saintsation, Tiffany Naumann,

fitness has always been her passion. “I just fell in love with fitness

years ago,” she says. “During the years that I performed as a dancer,

I was always active and fit.” Tiffany eventually stepped into the cor-

porate world where she began to search for an exercise routine that

would help her maintain her fitness level.

“I started to run, but it put a strain on my knees. I met my husband,

who is a personal trainer, and we tried other things, but nothing

seemed to do for my body what dance had done for my body.” Tiffany

eventually found a workout that was bar-based and incorporated

moves similar to dance. She initially started the workouts at home.

“The first workout was nearly impossible for me to complete,” she

remembers. “But that is exactly what fitness is. The challenge is

attempting the impossible and finding out that you can take small

steps and eventually achieve it.”

The Bar Method, is a one-hour workout that focuses on the entire

body and incorporates resistances, isometrics, dance conditioning

and upbeat interval training, all based on the science of physical

therapy. For Tiffany, this combination, much of which is done at the

ballet bar, finally satisfied her inner dancer, so she obtained her

certification as an instructor. “This bar-based workout is specifically

designed to help you obtain sculpted, elongated muscles and a lean,

carved body,” she notes. “You will burn fat, have better posture, and

this routine will literally carry you throughout the remainder of your

day. It is intense both mentally and physically, but teachers are there

to keep you focused and adjust you both verbally and hands-on.

The Bar Method Covington—Passion and Purpose Inspire Fitness Venture

It is like having a one-on-one relationship with a personal trainer.

People usually see results within the first three to five weeks.”

The Bar Method Covington, Tiffany’s newly constructed spa-like

studio which officially opens January 2, offers flexible class times,

child-care for a nominal fee, and rea-

sonable packages to suit every budget.

Specialty classes like pre-natal and

post-mommy are also in the works. “I

just reached a point in my life where

I was soul-searching and trying to

find something that not only satisfied

me, but also had meaning to me. That

is what led me to the Bar Method. I

know it will do the same thing for so

many others.”

The Bar Method Covington is

located at 5217 Pinnacle Parkway,

Covington. For more information log

HORMONE REPLACEMENT is quite often a

lifestyle choice. People who are suffering

from negative symptoms of hormone imbal-

ance often choose bio-identical hormone

replacement in order to relieve symptoms

and improve their quality of life. Some

people think the symptoms are a normal

part of aging and they should simply tol-

erate them. Others question the safety of

hormone replacement and worry about side

effects—especially cancer. This puts people

between the proverbial rock and hard place,

quite unnecessarily.

If we mimic nature by using bio-identical

hormones that are the same chemical struc-

ture as those made by the human body

and follow the body’s normal metabolic

pathways, to restore a hormonal deficit, as

opposed to a synthetic hormone, we should

greatly reduce the risk of side effects. We are

replacing the deficiency with the exact same

hormones that were once in abundance

when we were younger. These hormones

were good for us then, so the possibility of

problems arising from replacement with bio-

identical hormones now should be minimal.

Stress exacerbates all hormone deficiency

symptoms. Excess stress is caused by a

myriad of every day factors, including

marriage troubles, pressure at work, even

excessive dieting. Caregivers are under

tremendous stress, including those who care

for the sick and elderly, young children and

school teachers. Quite often we find that

people under stress need only their DHEA

and Cortisol levels balanced.

Every individual is different and a com-

pounding pharmacist specializing in bio-

identical hormone replacement can work

with your physician to customize a treat-

ment regimen for you.

beauty І RESOLUTIONS

JANUARY FIRST, and we all get to wipe the

slate clean. Will this be the year we keep our

promises to ourselves? We will if they are

attainable and make us feel and look good.

Working out can be the last thing on your

mind but what if a little shortcut yielded

similar results?

The seaweed slimming body wrap is a

solution that can help you lose up to 24

inches or more in one session (results vary

by individual). Imagine lying on a warm and

comfy table while you are massaged as you

drift in and out of consciousness. As you

relax, the organic products that have been

applied are working to draw out impurities

and toxins that have built up in your system.

Who wouldn’t want to take a nap and wake

up smaller in size? Your body wrap therapist

will help educate you on how to keep these

inches off for the long term. You’ll end your

session with key products that exfoliate and

everyday tips that will help you keep your

resolution this year. Keeping the inches off

is the goal, therefore more than one session

is recommended.

What about cellulite you ask? If you

pair your body wrap with a cellulite spe-

cific massage, you can soon be enjoying your

favorite sleeveless outfits and short skirts.

Using proprietary methods and special tools,

your body will be stimulated to give you that

smooth appearance we all crave. Remember

this is an investment in yourself; no one else

is going to do this for you. Go ahead, do the

resolution thing—but this time the differ-

ence is you can be elated when you keep

your promises.

Dora Ochoa’s offi ce, Body Sugaring USA Day Spa, is located in Mandeville at 1800 West Causeway Approach, Ste. 122. Call 985-626-5538 or visit bodysugaringusa.com. Dora is a Licensed Massage Therapist and is nationally certifi ed in therapeutic massage and bodywork.

SKIN І health

AS WE AGE, not only do we wrinkle, but

unfortunately we also grow skin cancers.

Successful removal of cancerous growths

with minimal scarring, depends on several

factors beyond the surgical expertise of the

physician. These factors include the location

of the growth, the patient’s skin type and age,

and the cancer’s biologic behavior.

Certain locations on the face lend them-

selves to earlier and deeper spread of

cancerous tissue by direct invasion or involve-

ment of nearby lymph glands. These areas

include the skin around the eyes, the temples,

the junction of the cheeks and nostrils, the

lips, and the creases behind the ears. Early

recognition of cancerous lesions in these red-

flag areas is essential for employing the best

treatment option, since special attention and

techniques are required for each site.

Skin type and age often help determine

which cancer procedures are possible. Older,

lax skin is more easily stretched and reposi-

tioned over a surgical site where the cancer

has been removed, while youthful skin heals

more readily. Although patients of varied

skin types and ages may opt for non-sur-

gical approaches such as radiation to avoid

surgery, these treatments often require com-

mitment to multiple appointments.

Perhaps the most important factor in skin

cancer treatment decisions is the biologic

behavior of the malignant growth. This spec-

trum ranges from superficial, slow-growing

cancers which extend and advance only

within the original site, to highly malignant,

fast-growing lesions which can spread to

local lymph nodes and even through the

bloodstream throughout the body.

It takes a skin cancer specialist to deter-

mine which treatment is best suited for each

patient and to then eliminate the cancer com-

pletely and as inconspicuously as possible.

THOUGH EACH HAS TRAVELED A DIFFERENT PATH, ultimately, both

Becky Gustafson Budd and Grace Comeaux-Piro, financial represen-

tatives of Northwestern Mutual in Covington, reached the same

destination. Both bring to their clients extensive training, distinctive

backgrounds, and the unparalleled reputation of Northwestern Mutual,

founded in 1857. “Our company has unsurpassed financial ratings from

all four rating services: Moody’s, Standard and Poor’s, Fitch Ratings and

A.M. Best,” Becky notes. “In this economy, our strong financial ratings

are a magnet for clients who appreciate safety and stability.”

Starting her career as an intern representative, Becky realized

Northwestern Mutual’s longevity and culture was a testament to the

depth and quality of the company. “From the very onset, the inter-

view process to secure an internship was quite intense,” she notes. “I

soon learned that they were looking for more than just a great com-

municator, they were committed to setting people up for success.

Fully trained and surrounded by a team of experts, I had the tools,

knowledge and ability to discuss people’s financial security and help

them better understand their situations.” Through her career with

Northwestern Mutual, Becky has grown from educating and motivat-

ing her clients towards their financial goals to leading Northwestern

Mutual interns and representatives to do the same.

Grace came to Northwestern Mutual with a background from her

family’s business—American Factory Direct Furniture—where she

learned from her parents everything she now knows about career,

family and achieving balance in life. With her past career, growing and

operating a successful, thriving business, were skills that have proven

very useful in her new journey. “This personal experience is what allows

me to connect to business owners and show them creative planning

tools to achieve their goals.” She also jokes that she began keeping a

profit and loss log at the tender age of eight when she first garnered

a wage for helping out with the laundry. “I was actually introduced to

Northwestern Mutual when I contacted them to do work for our fam-

ily’s business,” she notes. “They were so thorough, professional and

knowledgeable. I was quickly intrigued when representative, Warren

Berault, hinted that this would be something I could do quite well. Once

the door was opened, I realized I could make a successful career of this.”

Risk management, wealth accumulation, wealth preservation and

distribution, estate planning and investment strategies are areas

Becky, Grace and their colleagues immerse themselves in every day.

They continually educate clients on why these areas need regular

tending. “I had one client who knew only that he had a checking

account where his paychecks ended up,” Becky says. “After thorough

goal planning, a personal needs analysis and suitable plan imple-

mentation he is now hoping to retire at age 50.”

“I initially became interested in education planning when my daugh-

ter was born,” says Grace, “but I didn’t realize the extreme impact of

starting early until I began my career with Northwestern Mutual.” The

power of saving early not only allows a person to drastically set aside

less per year, but you are able to accomplish the same education goal

for your child by saving less money throughout the accumulation stage.

Grace simply explains, “When you analyze the need to save for a portion

of four years worth of college expenses, $7,000 per year, you will need

approximately $28,000 saved. Using a conservative five percent rate of

return, starting at a child’s age of one in a tax favorable environment

you will only need to set aside $728 per year. However, waiting to meet

this same goal at a child’s age of eight will create a need to save $1,738

per year. With rising education costs parents need to start planning

early in order to meet the demand of higher education tuition.”

“Financial security is the confidence that comes from taking

actions today to provide for tomorrow,” notes Becky. Many individu-

als acknowledge the importance of saving for future goals, but often

don’t realize the importance of protecting that ability. The impact

of inaccurate risk management planning is often underestimated.

Becky explains “We visit with clients and ask the courageous ques-

tions like ‘How important is it to make sure your retirement and chil-

dren’s education are funded if you passed away, became disabled or

OPPOSITE PAGE: Grace and Becky hard at work in the offi ce. ABOVE: L to R, Christy Guidry, Regional Director of recruiting for Northwestern Mutual of Louisiana with Grace Comeaux-Piro and Becky Gustafson Budd.

were diagnosed with a chronic illness?’ We work with people create

their definition of financial security by helping them to realize their

vision for the future while also insuring their dreams in the event

of the unexpected.” Individuals, families and small business owners

who are ready to create plans to reach future goals, and who wish to

securely pass their assets on to the next generation, will gain insight,

knowledge and empowerment with the help of a financial represen-

tative.” It’s a process that should be disciplined—yet personalized

and flexible to adapt to change over time,” says Becky.

“We are truly in the business of building long lasting relationships.

Our financial representatives discover what their potential clients’

needs and true desires are.” says Christy Guidry, the Regional Director

of recruiting for Northwestern Mutual. “A career with us has many

benefits. You are an entrepreneur with a flexible schedule and the

opportunity to have personal financial success. You are also in a

position to help others achieve their financial goals. ‘Enriching Lives,

Fulfilling Dreams and Securing Futures’ is not only our mission state-

ment; this is what we do for our clients and their families. Our goal in

2012 is to hire six high caliber individuals on the North Shore who live

out our core values of Growth, Integrity, Professionalism and Passion.”

For Becky and Grace, their career rewards are many. From helping

people map out their dreams, helping to formulate a plan to achieve

them, placing safeguards in place to protect them, and finally, watch-

ing those dreams come to fruition; they literally watch as people’s

lives unfold. And, as they work together they have come to appreciate

one another. “Working with Grace, I have the benefit of having a com-

mitted and driven colleague to share and obtain ideas from. It is truly

amazing when you can watch someone become better at doing some-

thing they love, and because of their efforts, create a life she wants for

herself and her family,” Becky notes. “It is nice having a female friend

like Becky for support and to overcome the obstacles we experience,

as well as challenging each other to the next big goal. Becky and I

are a great combination for a growing office with her experience and

knowledge with Northwestern Mutual and my experience in growing

a company,” Grace notes.

“Two things happen when you put a plan in place,” Becky says. “You

become excited about what you have, and you obtain more because

you have a goal associated with it.” Becky Gustafson Budd and Grace Comeaux-Piro are financial represen-

tatives of Northwestern Mutual, which is a marketing name for the sales

and distribution arm of The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company

(Northwestern Mutual)(NM), Milwaukee, WI, its affiliates and subsidiaries,

including Northwestern Mutual Investment Services, LLC (NMIS), member

FINRA and SIPC. NM is not a broker dealer. Becky can be reached at 985-290-

WHILE SNOW CONCEALS the garden else-

where, January is a very busy time for

Southern gardeners. Newcomers must un-

learn the ways of the North, East and West

by relying on dependable species to form

the permanent framework of their Southern

garden design.

Spring is not favorable for planting in our

deep south, semi-tropical climate. Winter

gives more favorable results. Many new gar-

deners make the mistake of planting too

deeply. Make sure the root system has the

same relative position in the ground as it

had in the pot from which it was transplant-

ed. Then, shovel in the rich earth around

the base of the plant taking care to leave a

saucer-like depression to hold water.

In addition to processed mulch, leaves and

pine needles, the Spanish moss that deco-

rates our oaks and crepe myrtles can be used

to provide protection from the cold for our

Southern plants. My daughter Suzanne (Sue)

who now lives part time in Montana, relishes

receiving the boxes of Spanish moss her

Louisiana daughter sends to her every spring

to protect her early plantings in Montana’s

cooler climate.

Mulching is highly recommended for

all plants. Newly planted trees and shrubs

need not be fertilized during their first year.

New Beginnings in the Garden

Instead, apply at least four inches of mulch to

your winter garden. By summer, it will have

deteriorated and become a soil enhancer. Do

not prune in January as spring buds have

already been set. Wait until after blooming

when cuttings can be used in arrangements

to bring inside.

Our bright, crisp, January weekends are

perfect for gardening in the deep South.

Plantings can include calendulas, violas,

pansies, snapdragons, as well as bulbs of

Agapanthus, Alstroemeria, Amaryllis, Callas,

Freesia, Gladiola, Hyacinth and Ranunculus.

If you enjoy a vegetable garden, plant young

broccoli and radishes every couple of weeks.

Pick collard and turnip greens while young

and tender. Plant rows of scallions about

four inches apart. Sow beet, cabbage, carrots,

lettuce and turnip seeds. Plant the seed

of Dianthus, Delphinium, Lobelia, Alyssum,

Verbena, Viola, poppy, larkspur, lupine and

sweet peas.

At the end of January, fertilize your estab-

lished trees and shrubs and replenish your

mulch if need be. For a beautiful green lawn

all winter, sow fescue or winter rye. And of

course, TALK to your plants and let them

know you are there to love and help them

grow. Have a happy, healthy and FLOWERY

New Year!

AS I WRITE THIS, I still cannot believe that this is now

my twelfth year writing for Sophisticated Woman maga-

zine. My very first article was in January 2001 about New

Year’s Resolutions and I am sure that there are still a few

of my own resolutions from that list that I have still not

implemented. Such is the reason for this column. I think

we all make unobtainable New Year’s resolutions, which

at least gives us something to strive for. The one I hear

most often, of course, is “to get our estate plan in order.”

We hear our clients say that this has been “on their list”

for years. So for 2012, why not make it a reality?

It is not like you are planning for something that will

never happen, right? It may be an uncomfortable fact,

but it is still a fact. We are all going to die—sooner or

later (hopefully later)! Think about all the other things

in life that we insure ourselves for that we hope never

happen: fire, flood, hurricanes, disability, business inter-

ruption, etc. Isn’t getting your Last Will and Testament

(or Living Trust) in place just as important (or maybe

even more important) since it is covering something

that is going to happen?

Discussing planning options regarding your death or

disability may not be pleasant but it is far better than

doing nothing at all. When there are no legal docu-

ments in place, we have no choice but to let the law of

Louisiana dictate where your assets go, and sometimes

it isn’t what you had in mind at all. You know the old

saying “no one plans to fail, they just fail to plan.”

So move “peace of mind” to the top of your list for

2012. Get your estate plan in order. You’ll be glad you

did and you know what—it might not be so bad after all.

We take pride in the fact that many of our clients tell us

“this wasn’t painful at all, why did we wait so long to

do this?”

WE ALL KNOW that Twitter is an excellent

tool for individuals to connect with new and

old friends over a social exchange consisting

of 140 characters or less.

Recently, researchers have found a Twitter

spot in your brain. Now they are asking, “Can

Twitter make you skinny?” According to the

Daily Mail, research shows that mice that

socialized with other mice lost more weight,

while the less social mice did not lose weight

and even ate more food.

The theory suggests that socializing and

meeting with friends helps boost levels of

brown fat which burns calories to generate

heat. Living in a stimulating, social environ-

ment was found to reduce abdominal fat in

mice by one half over four weeks, even if the

mice actually ate more food than normal.

So does this prove that Twitter can make

you skinny? No. The experiment with mice

was done whisker to whisker. However, for

humans, face-to-face conversations involve

using more senses. When we are with our

friends, we burn calories from walking

from place to place, telling stories with

animation, and actually laughing out loud

rather than typing “Laughing on Line” or

exchanging tweets.

This study infers the benefits of in-person

socialization versus Twitter interaction. For

example, a 150 pound person can burn

approximately 116 calories per one hour of

socializing; while computers are a way to

avoid socialization and exercise. Therefore,

if you want to be slender, get off that key-

board, stop nano-blogging and go out and

socialize. Besides, everyone knows that

mice don’t use Twitter—they use Mice Space

(Mc Guinness 2011). Suzanne Zazulak Pedro, Founder and CEO of The Protocol Praxis, LLC, is an expert facilitator, speaker and author. She specializes in a cutting-edge approach to professional executive coaching and corporate etiquette. Find more at www.theprotolcolpraxis.com.

FOR PEOPLE WITH BRACES, traveling out of

town can present a separate set of problems

if braces break or brackets loosen. Often on

vacations and during out of town jaunts, we

indulge in foods that we might not normally

try, and which may contain a multitude of

unfriendly items for the orthodontic patient.

Here are some remedies to some common

minor emergencies.

Early in treatment, the orthodontic wires

are very light and flexible. These characteris-

tics often cause them to flex out of a molar

bracket or band and become uncomfortable.

In this instance, use a pair of tweezers to

replace the wire in the bracket. If this is not

easily accomplished, use fingernail clippers

to cut the wire as close the next brace as

possible. The nail clipper trick also applies to

larger wires that are not as flexible.

Broken braces that slide on the wire can

also be uncomfortable. Placing wax on them

is the easiest and most effective solution to

this problem. Make sure the area is as dry

as possible to increase the retention of the

wax. If the wax is still falling off, knead some

fibers from a cotton ball into the wax to add

some body to it. If all else fails, revert back to

the old faithful nail-clippers.

In the event of an emergency that is not

readily handled by the patient or parent, do

not hesitate to call your orthodontist. Most

of us have colleagues all over the country,

and can point you in the right direction. Your

orthodontist can also make a call to the local

practitioner on your behalf. Most important-

ly enjoy your time away!

THERE ARE SOME BOOKS that make a bright

splash and fade just as quickly as they

came. And then there are books that quietly

garner attention and critical acclaim all

the while sneak-

ing in under our

radar. The War

Horse by Michael

Morpurgo is one

such book.

The story is

told by a horse

named Joey as

he journeys from

his role as a

plough horse to

his station as an

artillery horse during World War One. During

his military service he is accompanied by a

young boy who loves him and is determined

to bring him home no matter the cost. Joey’s

voice brings the harsh reality of war front

and center.

The author, Michael Morpurgo, does what

so few children’s authors do well. He pro-

vides a well-written story with well-rounded

characters. I rate this book among those

like Sheila Burnford’s The Incredible Journey

and Richard Adams’ Watership Down. Like

the novels previously mentioned, it can be

enjoyed by readers of all ages, and will soon

be ranked among literary classics.

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo can be

found as a sound recording and a book from

St. Tammany Parish Library.

Go for the Good

lifestyle І adViCe

OUT THERE SOMEWHERE is good, positive,

encouraging, truthful information. I change

radio stations and surf channels, looking.

Somewhere within me and within others

is good too. Finding the good in oneself is

a struggle for many people grappling with

guilt and shame. Engaging in psychological

flagellation makes enjoying life difficult.

Feeling bad about bad behavior though, is

important in the development of children,

and a critical lesson to teach as a parent.

I heard a father say to his son, “Raise your

hand if you got in trouble at school today.”

His son laughed and raised his hand high.

His father smiled, tousled his son’s hair

and said, “That’s great! You are the only

one raising your hand. The only one in the

whole class who got in trouble,” chuckling.

“I wonder what your mom is going to say. I

know what she is going to say.”

I was appalled. This father was encour-

aging his son to be disrespectful to his

teacher, other students and his mother.

This child was probably six or seven years

of age. Because he is not learning respect for

authority and others, in ten years, this ado-

lescent will be ungovernable and unapolo-

getic. Unlike clients whom I have seen who

want the guilt to go away as in, “I don’t

want to carry this guilt anymore.” And I

say, “What you are feeling now is helping

you define how you want to live.” Usually,

they take responsibility for making amends

where they can, have closure and feel better.

Shame, however, is a pervasive sense of

inadequacy and failure. Sufferers feel humil-

iated and have intermittent bouts of self

loathing, which are not resolved through

“living right,” success or public accolades.

To diminish shame episodes pay atten-

tion to these steps. Make amends with

yourself. Accept your place under your God.

Be as kind to yourself as you are to others.

Forgive yourself as much as you forgive

others. Recognize that your self worth is

not measured in pounds, dollars or what

others say.

A new year is a place to start anew,

celebrating the good—in you.

Moving ForwardAS WE BEGIN A NEW YEAR, I want to thank the people

of St. Tammany Parish for demonstrating their confi-

dence in me. I look forward to serving you as Parish

President. One of my goals is to continue to build on

the transparent nature of our government and provide

citizens with as much information as possible.

In this spirit, visit the Parish Government website,

www.stpgov.org. We have added some features to

allow better communication between government

and the public, including an “Ask Pat” button on the

home page. You can email me directly, and I will

answer you. Each week, I will post one of the ques-

tions received as a “question of the week” on the

website, along with the answer.

One of my most important missions as Parish

President will be to continue to promote the eco-

nomic development of our parish. Given the current

economic condition in much of our country, we need

to keep quality jobs available in St. Tammany, and fill

them with well qualified, local citizens. Every citizen

who desires to work in St. Tammany should have the

opportunity to do so.

As we move forward together into an exciting new

era for St. Tammany, please join me in maintaining and

building your government. St. Tammany Parish—gov-

ernment that Works.

Working in Tandem with the CBABECAUSE BUSINESS development is a crucial building

block to sustain and enhance our community, my office

has taken an active role in Economic Development ini-

tiatives. We are the first stop for both business reten-

tion and attraction.

The Covington Business Association (CBA)—led by

President Cliff Bergeron and board members Michelle

Stegall, Tom Dicerbo, Elizabeth Williams, Marie

Humphries, David Barfield, Nancy Ross and Suzanne

King—is a significant partner in our business reten-

tion efforts. The CBA represents the interests of any

downtown business that chooses to participate, and

they allow businesses to band together—essentially

making them stronger—to promote themselves. They

encourage local shopping and dining and raise aware-

ness of the many entertainment options that abound.

The CBA works closely with the City of Covington

Office of Cultural Arts and Events to involve businesses

in city events. They will soon host their own inaugu-

ral food and wine event, “A Taste of Covington.”  This

four-day affair, beginning in late March, will include

a four-course dinner with wine pairings at various

Covington restaurants, a cooking demonstration and

wine tasting, an artist market and merchant stroll,

and a jazz brunch. I encourage local business owners

to become involved with this and other CBA initiatives,

as they help promote a positive economic climate in

our community.

I’m proud to say that downtown Covington will soon

see further revitalization, pending the restoration of

the old Southern Hotel on Boston Street. Covington

lawyer Lisa Condrey recently purchased the historic

landmark and is working on plans to revitalize it. This

project will certainly boost tourism and business in

our community, as well give our city a centerpiece of

which to be proud.

Powerful ProgressTHE NEW YEAR IS a time of resolution and renewal.

As both individuals and business owners, we should

make it our mission this month to contemplate our

future growth and review our past challenges. A

Chamber of Commerce is, according to the American

Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), “an organi-

zation of businesses seeking to further their collective

interests, while advancing their community, region,

state or nation.”

This is the mission of our Chamber, and as we reflect,

the question now is how we can accomplish this goal

in a manner superior to previous years. I believe

it is through organizational growth and personal

involvement. Ponchatoula is a network of businesses,

families, schools, churches and neighborhood com-

munities that must come together as a unified body

to build on our investment. Both Ponchatoula’s and

the Chamber’s past growth have largely been based

on word-of-mouth promotion. Resolve to take one or

two steps outside of last year’s comfort zone and share

in your own personal style, our common ambition to

grow the Chamber of Commerce in both membership

and involvement, and by association—Ponchatoula.

There is power in the thoughts and actions of an indi-

vidual as well as power in numbers. Let 2012 be the

year of powerful progress.

New Year—New VenturesAS EVERYONE IS PLANNING for a prosperous 2012,

I would like to take a few moments to share with you

several exciting new developments coming up in the

New Year.

We will soon break ground on the Summit Fremaux

shopping development. I have met with Mr. Bayer on

many occasions over these past few months and he

reports that several major retailers have agreed to

lease space in the shopping complex. This is exciting

news for the City of Slidell.

You may have seen the signs at the mall about

the upcoming renovations at Northshore Square. The

owners have told me that they are planning a $16

million upgrade to the shopping center, with the addi-

tion of more stores and restaurants. If you’ve seen the

renovations to the mall in Hammond, then you have a

good idea of what the future holds for Slidell.

I can tell you by the number of ribbon cuttings I’ve

been to over the past year that the City of Slidell is

blessed to have many new businesses coming to our

city. I look forward to attending many more.

Construction of the Slidell Municipal Auditorium is

nearing completion. All I can say is that I cannot wait

until our citizens can finally enjoy this beautiful, state-

of-the-art facility.

Mandeville Starts New Year off With Savings

Eight Business Leaders to Take Reins of Chamber

WE HAVE ACHIEVED A milestone in the City of

Mandeville with regards to FEMA and our flood insur-

ance premiums. In this historic breakthrough, FEMA

has agreed to allow the City of Mandeville to utilize

their own community based flood map, apart from the

parish, which will reflect lower base flood elevations

resulting in significant savings and reduced flood insur-

ance premiums for citizens residing within our city

limits. The new flood maps will become effective on

May 16, 2012.

The city will hold open house style meetings to inform

citizens on what they need to know about obtaining

new flood zone elevations and the requirements needed

for possible premium changes. All meetings are from

7p.m. to 9p.m. and are as follows: January 11 (Council

District 3 citizens) and February 1 (Council District 2

citizens) at the Treen Center. January 2 (Council District

1 citizens), Pontchartrain Elementary School gymna-

sium. While these meetings may be directed to particu-

lar districts, the basic information is the same and any

questions will be answered. If you cannot attend on the

designated night for your district, feel free to come to

one of the other scheduled times.

Check our website, www.cityofmandeville.com and

click the “New Flood Maps” icon, for information includ-

ing, a list of local surveyors available for new elevation

certificates, and the tool to find your current elevation

and proposed new elevation, as well as links to other

flood hazard prevention websites. If you need further

information or clarification, please do not hesitate to

contact me at my office, 985-626-1082, or Chris Brown,

the City’s Flood Plain Administrator at 985-624-3104.

EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP is extremely important to the

members, and strengthen the business climate of

St. Tammany Parish.

The 2012 Executive Committee has been recently

elected. They bring combined years of experience in

previous chairman or active committee member roles

in membership development, finance and funding,

public policy issues and communications.

Our 2012 board chairman will be Kieran Weldon

of Fauntleroy Latham Weldon Barre Architects. The

Executive Committee will also include: Amy Edwards,

Todd Pellissier got his diabetes and weight under control on Dr. Burkenstock’s AgeLess Rx program.

Dr. Burkenstock’s Skin • Body • Health

Do you suffer from fatigue, insomnia, mood swings, weight gain or decreased libido?

Dr. Burkenstock’s Skin • Body • Health has the answer.

Hormonal and metabolic disharmony can lead to fatigue, insomnia, mood swings, weight gain and decreased sex drive to name just a few. Dr. Kelly Burkenstock has formulated AgeLess Rx—The Answer to bring your body back into balance. “When the body’s hormones, vitamins and metabolism are unbalanced, it may be in a state of infl ammation, says Dr. Burkenstock. “This can result in accelerated aging and weight gain that lower the patient’s energy, mood, health and overall well-being.”

Dr Burkenstock integrates an age management, weight-loss and nutrition plan in conjunction with medical testing and a complimentary fi tness club membership to offer a comprehensive solution to reinstate the body’s natural equilibrium. “When I was originally diagnosed with diabetes, I was constantly tired and lacked energy. My blood sugar A1c numbers were off the chart,” recalls Todd Pellissier, patient of Dr. Burkenstock’s. “With her extraordinary knowledge and care, my A1c is nearly normal and I look and feel better at 49 than I did at 35. With Dr. Burkenstock, you’re not just another patient fi le—you’re a person who is special. My weight is under control and all my clothes fi t better than ever!” Key components of this comprehensive program include metabolic blood, urine and blood sugar testing, cholesterol, and thyroid status, along with the patient’s acid/base balance and hormone/vitamin status that drives the body’s equilibrium.

“Our customized AgeLess Rx program includes lifestyle assessment, hormone and vitamin therapy, a custom diet and exercise plan as well as traditional medications,” Dr. Burkenstock notes. “The bottom line is that you can be one of the 20 percent that looks and feels great at any age!” Because—You are so worth it!

“What I love most about being a patient

of Dr. Burkenstock’s, is her ability to not

only make you look beautiful—she makes

you feel beautiful. Her dedication to her

patients’ well-being, goes far beyond what

one expects from a physician.”—Brenda
