AUGUST IS BUZZING at my house. This
August marks our 19th wedding anniversary;
my husband has a birthday; our daughter
has a birthday; and then there’s the dreaded
“elephant in the room.” We all know what it
is. No one wants to face the unsavory task of
the back to school routine.
Summer at my house goes out like an
angry child throwing a temper tantrum—
kicking, screaming and even biting. We try
to hang on to every last morsel of easy-going
days and “swimming baths.” Sleeping in and
sno-balls. Matinees and rainy days. It is so
hard to let go. But let go we must.
To all my fellow moms (and to the dads)—
we will somehow get back into that routine.
We will wade through all of the back to
school paperwork. To all of the parents
sending kids off to college—congratulations
on reaching that milestone. And to everyone
with a newly emptied nest, may you enjoy
your new normal.
To our neighbors and friends being impact-
ed by the oil spill, we hope the coming
months show steady signs of continous
clean up and restoration.
As summer closes, this issue offers us so
much to look forward to. Our Enterprising
Women can help you find gifts and teacher
sussies. Check out our community section
and meet some of our local entrepreneurs.
Remember to thumb through the magazine
to find items you can purchase that will
benefit spill victims. You can also check
www.LAGulfResponse.org to join a volunteer
database or make a donation. Lastly, best of
luck to everyone this fall. Happy birthday to
my little girl and to my husband, happy birth-
day and anniversary!

pets І PLAnninG
DOES YOUR PET have bad breath or missing
teeth? Does he or she drop food while eating?
Believe it or not, dental disease is often an
underlying issue when things do not seem
quite right with Fido. Common clinical signs
of dental disease in cats and dogs include: bad
breath, yellow-brown crust on teeth, bleed-
ing gums, visiting food bowl but not eating,
change of chewing habits, tooth loss, subdued
behavior, abnormal drooling and swallowing
food whole.
Dental health matters. Ignoring your pet’s
teeth can lead to a wide range of health prob-
lems, from weight loss, pain, and behavior
issues to cardiac, liver, and kidney disease.
These complications can lead to severe illness.
Dental disease usually begins with plaque
buildup that mineralizes into tartar, the yel-
low-brown crust found on your pet’s teeth.
Tartar harbors bacteria, which destroys the
gums and bony structures, leading to gingivitis
and loose teeth.
Be warned! Just because your pet may not
be exhibiting symptoms doesn’t mean that
he is not suffering from dental disease. Take
charge to prevent the loss of teeth caused by
this silent health risk.
• Check for tartar buildup, especially the teeth
in the back of the mouth. Be careful not to
get bitten.
• Sniff the breath while you’re at it. If it smells
foul, dental disease is a strong likelihood.
• Ask your veterinarian to perform a complete
dental & physical exam. Your veterinarian
can remove tartar, apply protective coatings,
perform dental x-rays, and take other impor-
tant steps to preserve oral health. Chewable
treats and food, as well as tooth-brushing,
can help maintain your pet’s oral health.
• Ask about pet toothpaste and toothbrushes
• Lastly, regular follow-ups with your vet-
erinarian are essential for long term good
dental health.

MANY SITUATIONS can occur that may
require us to find a new dentist such as
moving, having a dentist retire, or needing
special services our dentist can’t provide.
Although we all know that proper dental
care is vital to good health, most of us do not
know how to choose a good dentist. It can
be difficult to know what questions to ask
and what things to observe in the process of
choosing one. As a patient it is very difficult
to discern quality. Most of the time it is the
non clinical tangibles such as office hours,
staff interactions, location, insurance con-
straints, etc that will help sway your deci-
sion. You will want to know both how the
dentist treats you as a person and how he
treats your mouth. Following are some key
questions to ask and observations to make
in the process of making your choice.
1. What is your philosophy for performing
dentistry? Example: When do you recom-
mend replacing a silver filling?
2. What continuing education have you
had during this past year? Example: Are you
current on the newer more conservative
time saving techniques?
3. Do you comply with OSHA and American
Dental Association guidelines for infection
control?
4. Do you maintain a DMF (Decayed,
Missing, and Filled) record? This is a detailed
record of ALL treatment and diagnosis
including periodontal charting to screen for
gum disease?
5. Does the dentist consider you in the
treatment planning process? Does the dentist
and staff spend the time educating you and
supporting you in your overall dental health?
Is there a long term vision to get there?
6. Does the dentist focus on finding the
cause of the problem versus continuing to fix
and repair the same issues? Unfortunately,
dental insurance has created a barrier for
many patients when it comes to choosing a
dentist. You only get one set of teeth as an
adult. The relationship between the dentist
and the patient will always dictate dental
health. The insurance companies have tried
to turn dentistry into a commodity. Dentistry
is a service-based profession. You are not
buying a filling or a crown!

Northlake Periodontics, L.L.C.You Deserve the Care of a Specialist
Dr. Ronald A. Madere, OrthodonticsOff ering High Quality, Patient-Centered Care
ARE YOU AWARE of the great advances in technology avail-
able in the world of dentistry today? Northlake Periodontics
offers 3D technology with ideal options for you. Dr. Marija
LaSalle has incorporated laser treatment in her practice
for over a year now and she is the only periodontist on the
Northshore that offers “Cone-Beam” scans. “As technol-
ogy improves the standard of care for patients’ improves;
I always want to provide the best for each of my patients,”
says Dr. LaSalle. “Procedures done in the past can be per-
formed now with little or no pain and extreme precision.”
“Cone-Beam” technology is a three dimensional digital
X-ray specifically designed to provide information that will
show bone loss, architecture and supply all pertinent data
about your personal anatomy. With the detail obtained
from this scan, treatment is considerably more precise and
effective and the recovery time is significantly reduced. If
compared to hospital grade CT scanners, the dental version
uses approximately one percent of the radiation.
Dr. LaSalle’s scope of practice consists primarily of peri-
odontal disease, periodontal plastic surgery and dental
implants with strong emphasis on patient education. “We
want to give our patients all the tools necessary to be in
control of their dental health,” she says. Periodontal disease
cannot begin around a clean tooth. The bacteria that are
in the mouth cannot be seen with the naked eye. When
someone does not see the scope of the problem they are
not aware of it.
With the Galileos® 3D images the patient has the ability
to visualize the destruction under their swollen gum tissue.
If there was spontaneous bleeding in any other portion of
our body during our daily hygiene routine, we would prob-
ably run to a physician. Bleeding and swollen gums are an
indication of a problem, although, according to Dr. LaSalle,
most people do not recognize the severity.
Dr. LaSalle has been committed to the Northshore for
almost 20 years now. Her objective is to stop the disease
process before patients feel their teeth getting loose. Northlake Periodontics, L.L.C. is located at 1580 W. Causeway
Approach, Suite 5, Mandeville. To make an appointment, call
985-727-1133.

MANY CHILDREN develop thumb and finger
habits soon after birth which may con-
tinue for several years. These habits are
very soothing for the child and parents are
often comforted by the fact that they do
not have to confront taking the “noo-noo”
(binkie, pacifier etc.) away. Unfortunately,
these habits do present potential orthodon-
tic problems down the road.
Thumb and finger sucking creates nega-
tive pressure inside of the mouth, similar
to constantly sucking through a straw. The
forces from this negative pressure cause
the upper jaw to narrow and the palate
to develop into a vaulted or high-arched
configuration. In addition, the fingers being
in between the front teeth will force them
to separate in such a fashion that there is
no vertical overlap or even an open bite
(vertical space between the top and bottom
teeth). These orthodontic problems are cor-
rectable; however, if the habit is not broken,
relapse is certain.
Early intervention to break thumb and
finger habits is a relatively simple process,
with very favorable outcomes. The most
important component of the treatment is
a child that wants to quit. Once the habit
is arrested and the natural forces of the
muscles are allowed to take over, the open
bites often spontaneously self-correct.
In the instances that a cross-bite devel-
ops and causes the child to shift his/her
jaw to one side or the other, an early phase
of palate widening should take place. This
expansion will prevent the child’s lower jaw
from growing asymmetrically. Early evalu-
ation of children by an orthodontist will
help both the parents and children iden-
tify potentially negative habits, and plan for
their correction.

BACK PAIN is one of the most common
complaints among pregnant women.
Typically, such back pain can be attrib-
uted to changes in hormones and posture.
During pregnancy, the body produces a
hormone which acts to loosen the joints
and ligaments to allow the body to stretch
and make room for baby. Unfortunately,
this hormone acts on every joint and liga-
ment in the body, leaving the spine vulner-
able and instable.
As baby grows, the body’s center of
gravity changes. As the abdomen shifts
outward, the already instable spine, curves
backward in an attempt to compensate for
this shift. This can result in lumbar pain
(lower back pain) and posterior pelvic pain
(pain behind the pelvis across the tailbone
that can also be felt in the buttocks). Both
types of pain can be triggered by sitting or
standing for a long time or by repetitive
motions like bending over. Posterior pelvic
pain is frequently associated with repeti-
tive twisting.
So, how do you prevent back pain during
pregnancy? Maintain a healthy back during
pregnancy by exercising regularly. Exercise,
like walking, can stretch and strengthen
muscles and ligaments, which in turn leads
to a better supported spine and prevents
back pain. An additional source of support
for the spine and pelvis is a good pair of
tennis shoes with proper support. This can
improve posture and reduce joint stress. A
supportive shoe, proper nutrition, regular
exercise and adequate rest can all reduce
some of the physical stresses on muscles
and joints and help alleviate back pain in
pregnancy. If your back pain is very intense
and rhythmic in nature, contact your obste-
trician as it could be a sign of labor.

“People feel more confident about them-

fession. When I can help people achieve
that smile it just reinforces the reasons I

every patient myself. Whether you come in
for a consultation involving x-rays or you
come in for major adjustment work, I am
the person who will stand in the treatment
room to adjust your wires and implement all
orthodontic treatment,” he says. The average
relationship between an orthodontist and
their patients is about two years. During this
time, Dr. Miller establishes personal relation-
ships with his patients and their parents.
While his treatment philosophy is conser-
vative, Dr. Miller’s treatment mechanics are
progressive and modern. He recommends
that all children consult with an orthodontist
by the time they reach age seven. With con-
sultation at an early age, major malocclusion
issues can be ruled out and growth and devel-
opment of the child can be monitored.
He handles braces for children and
adults plus an array of orthodontic issues.

WE APPLIED FOR A mortgage and our loan officer has requested our tax returns. I am a commissioned sales person and receive a W-2. Why do I need to supply 2 years of tax returns?
Guidelines for a conventional mortgage
state that any employee whose commis-
sioned income is greater than 25 percent of
their total should supply two years of tax
returns to determine an average of non-
reimbursed expenses being deducted annu-
ally. This average deduction reduces your
qualifying income.
I work for a company that has given me a small percentage of ownership. My wife and I want to refinance our current mortgage and the loan officer has asked for copies of my both my personal and corporate tax returns for the past two years. The president of our company refused to release these records. Will this prevent our refinance?
Guidelines require personal and corpo-
rate tax returns be given for an individual
with greater than 25 percent ownership in
a company. If your ownership percentage is
less than 25 percent, your K-1 income will be
averaged for the past two years as qualifying
income but corporate tax returns should not
be required.
Be prepared to supply two years of tax
returns with all schedules if you are self-
employed, 1099’d, own more than 25 percent
of a company, own rental property, or write
off non-reimbursed expenses. Most lenders
are processing 4506-T forms giving them
the right to review the last two to three
years of IRS tax transcripts so, if you are a
W-2 employee and have a side business that
shows a loss, the loss will be deducted from
your qualifying income once known and
might prevent you from qualifying for a pre-
viously approved loan.
This provides for the return
of 95% conventional loans…

LIKE MANY YOUNG PEOPLE Suzanne Marie Dutel disliked her name.
As a result, she grew up as “Sue” and prefers to be called Sue to this
day. Eventually, she became more comfortable with her given name.
When she opened her new gift shop she wanted to name it some-
thing unique, something New Orleans, something French so that’s
when “Suzanne’s” was created.
Sue grew up in the Lakefront area of New Orleans. Throughout her
youth, she spent hours in the family garage drawing and painting.
Many a summer’s afternoon, Sue could be found taking art classes
at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Her family often joked that they
were going to rent a spot on the fence at Jackson Square for her to
paint portraits. As high school came to an end, Sue chose to pursue
a career in art at Stephens College in Columbia Missouri. Her choice
was twofold because Stephens College is a big equestrian school and
Sue grew up riding horses in Audubon Park. Her grandfather was a
trainer there for many years. After a year in Missouri, Sue missed
everything that is New Orleans and transferred to LSU in Baton
Rouge. While at LSU, Sue put her dreams of art on hold and earned
a Business degree in finance—though the desire to do something in
the field of art stayed with her.
After graduating from LSU, Sue married Brian Jackson and settled
in the City Park area of New Orleans. Her mother in law, Evelyn
Jackson, owned a shop in Chalmette called “The Party House” where
Sue worked along with her husband Brian. “The Party house was so
much fun and anyone from Chalmette knew of the Party House and
Miss Ev,” Sue says.

When Diane Kimbell and Kandyl Domangue first met, though they
were both in the medical field, they had no idea that they would one
day be professional partners. Diane was working in the field issuing
medical credentials, and Kandyl was about to open her own occu-
pational therapy clinic. When they crossed paths as medical profes-
sionals, they befriended one another and learned that they were each
in the process of making new discoveries about digestive health and
how it affected both their own lives and the lives of many of the
patients they helped every day.
Diane tried for nearly eight years to get relief from her digestive
health problems. Plagued with crippling irritable bowel syndrome
(IBS) ,she would literally try any remedy she learned about in hopes
that one would be the cure. During that time she worked for over
60 physicians, and the ones she consulted could not seem to find
answers. Among her many health issues, Diane’s skin was wracked
with eczema. It covered her eyes and arms, she rarely slept and
she led nothing close to a normal life. She learned about Colon
Hydrotherapy on one of her many trips to a local health food store
where her friend Robin, who worked there, suggested she try it.
Diane traveled nearly four hours to get to the facility but it was
well worth it. At last she found a remedy that truly worked for her.
Once she started her colon therapy regimen her digestive and skin
problems subsided along with all of the symptoms she had once
been forced to endure. During this time she met Kandyl, whom
she was working closely with to open her OT practice. Kandyl was
independently learning about digestive health and how it tied in to
her patients needs. When she heard about colon hydrotherapy, she
decided to tag along one day and have her own session. She was
sold.
These ladies put their heads together and decided to bring colon
hydrotherapy to the Northshore, where both Diane and Kandyl live,
so people could experience its countless benefits without having
to travel so far. After exhaustive research, they found a school in
Arkansas that they felt was best for their colon therapy training. They
came back as certified colon therapists and AloraCleanse was born.
During Hydro colonic therapy, triple purified warm water is slowly
infused into the colon with constant attention to internal pressure.
This hydrates the built up waste matter inside, which is then gently
released into an enclosed receptacle. Both Diane and Kandyl stress
that the process is pain-free, dignified and completely confidential.
People report renewed levels of energy, vibrant skin and an overall
feeling of lightness. The process takes approximately 45 minutes and
about 98% of their clients immediately resume normal activity.
“Our main goals with hydro colonic therapy are to repair digestive
health, eliminate intestinal toxemia, eradicate Candida (bad yeast)
and parasites, and help with chronic diseases like arthritis, allergies
and fibromyalgia,” Diane says. Because of her prolonged history with
digestive problems, she feels she is a walking testament to what
good colon health can mean to everyone, especially someone with
these health issues. “I am not doing this to have a job; I am doing this
because it changed my life.”
In addition to the therapy itself, the initial consultation includes a
brief discussion of medical history, a video on what will occur during

“My goal was to open a shop with unique gifts
at reasonable prices, as well as handmade
custom arrangements and wreaths.”
In the 1980’s the oil crisis hit Louisiana. They moved to Atlanta
to pursue their careers and raise their new daughter, Abby. After
twenty years of the fast pace of the big city, Sue returned to New
Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. What seemed to be a
temporary relocation to care for her ailing father, turned out to be
permanent move.
“My dad was the greatest influence on my life, he taught me
so much” Sue says. She is thankful for the opportunity she had to
move back to the area and spend time with him before his death
in 2007. Sue and her father, Louis Dutel, Jr., were very close and
worked together in business for many years. It is with his teachings,
wisdom and drive that Sue gained a sense of entrepreneurship. It
was from this sense of business and love of the arts that Suzanne’s
Gift Boutique was created in March of 2010.
Throughout the planning of the shop Sue shared many ideas with her
children, Abby and Kyle. “My goal was to open a shop with unique gifts
at reasonable prices, as well as handmade custom arrangements and
wreaths.” Sue asked Abby to accompany her to market and after their
first trip together Sue knew she had found the perfect partner. She over-
heard Abby tell her boyfriend “I’m going to work to help my Mom open
the shop.” Sue felt very blessed that her daughter wanted to work with
her. “Many people pressure their children to follow in their footsteps
and go to work for the family business. My daughter was asking to join
the family business!”
Abby grew up in Atlanta and loves the excitement and glamour of
the big city. However she was always fond of the Louisiana culture
and especially the LSU tigers, so she chose to attend LSU. Abby jokes,
“I moved to Baton Rouge in 2004 and my mom followed me to college.”
Abby graduated last year with a degree in Communications. She likes
to return to Atlanta often to visit friends and shop the newest prod-
ucts at the Americas Mart. Abby says, “I have fun with my mom at
Market. My mom has a very bright and loud style while my taste is
more classic clean lines. It makes for a fun duo to pick out the gifts
together.” Abby also spent many summers and Christmases working

at the Party House with her grandmother Evelyn Jackson. This is
where she learned to craft decorative arrangements and create hand-
made bows and decorations. “I think I am the only person my age
who can actually make a bow. All of my friends just stick pre-made
bows on their presents. At family Christmas parties my gift is always
the first to be opened because of the beautiful packaging.” When she
is not working, Abby enjoys visiting the French Quarter and frequent-
ing festivals with her boyfriend Ross.
Truly a family business, son Kyle works at the shop learning
the accounting and business aspects. Kyle’s friends tease him for
working at a gift shop but in reality he is honing his business skills
for the future. Kyle is in his senior year at St. Paul’s and is looking
forward to attending college once he graduates.
When they are not working, the family enjoys boating with Mom’s
old college friend and companion, Pete Farnet. Since they all have a
common love for LSU they try to make a few games every season.
Abby doesn’t miss a game and loves to tailgate. The Jacksons feel
very blessed to be back in Louisiana and working together. Suzanne’s Gift Boutique is located in Pelican Landing Shopping Center,
70457 Highway 21, Suite 104, Covington. Call us at 985-871-1581, and find

AS SEASONS CHANGE our bodies’ needs
change also. We find that with our families’
demands on our time our bodies take a toll.
We may notice our neck and shoulders, for
instance, tighter with stress. Fall is typically
the season when extra demands on our time
result in stress build up. Muscle relaxers may
help some but the side effects of medicine can
possibly be more harmful than beneficial.
Many of our clients have never received
a massage before and think “How could a
massage help me?” Massage has been around
for thousands of years and is the most natural
method available for relaxing, soothing and
helping sore muscles recover from over work,
and stress related issues. Experts estimate
that upwards of 90 percent of disease is stress
related. Massage is a powerful ally because it
can benefit us in many ways. Some benefits
of massage are: pain relief in the lower back,
enhanced immunity, increased joint flexibil-
ity, reduced muscle spasms and cramping,
enhanced sleep quality, greater energy plus
it lessens depression and anxiety. Arthritis
sufferers note fewer aches and less stiff-
ness and pain. High blood pressure patients
demonstrate lower blood pressure, decreased
anxiety and stress hormones in addition to
relief from migraine and headache pain.
Massage benefits are increased with fre-
quent visits. Regularly scheduled self-care
can play a huge part in how healthy you’ll
be and how youthful you’ll remain with each
passing season. Budgeting time and expenses
for massage at consistent intervals is truly
an investment in your health. Just because
massage feels like pampering it doesn’t mean
it is any less therapeutic. Consider massage
appointments a necessary piece of your
health and wellness plan and work with your
massage therapist to establish a treatment
schedule that best meets your needs.

I need a fence, but I have not wood.
I’ll seek a hedge that will grow as should.
Nature is there to supply our need—
And gardening is the way to fulfill the deed!
PLANTS CAN BECOME A LIVING FENCE and
combine utility with beauty. Shrubs and
bushes need not just be poodled and pruned
to add interest to the landscape. They can be
purposeful and still complement the archi-
tectural look of any yard. Whether you need
short or tall, flowering or evergreen—there is
a plant that will fit your need and make the
perfect fence.
In old-style, European garden hedges were
a must. For years and years people have used
hedges to separate areas of property within
and without. Sometimes the hedges divide
parts of the gardens; sometimes hedges follow
the actual property line. The hardest part of
hedge gardening is deciding which plant to
The Living Fence
use. Once determined and planted, most of
these plants will do quite well and actually
enjoy being grouped with like brethren!
Blooming hedges made of ligustrum grow
quite quickly and quite tall. They do need to be
trimmed seasonally. If flowers are your thing,
try making a hedge with hydrangea bushes.
They, too, grow quickly and provide beauti-
ful color. The only problem, here, is that they
tend to shed leaves and become a bare winter
hedge! “Knock-out” roses fall into this same
category and will be tall and showy before you
know it. Pairing shorter evergreens with any of
these would give you a hedge that lasts year
round. Be sure and leave space for growth.
Evergreens retain their appearance in the
winter. Some easy growers are: privet, bar-
berry, podocarpus and American or Japanese
hollies. For just an added touch of color
try these: red-tip photinia, euonymous and

pittosporum. All of these will do well with
seasonal trimming, but can also take a more
casual form without.
All hedges need good drainage and proper
mulching. Beds should be properly prepared
and laid out before planting. Keep in mind the
height and width you are looking for when
shopping for your plants and don’t be afraid
to ask for advice.
The best pruning time depends on the
plant. Flowering shrubs should be trimmed
after they bloom and evergreens should
usually be trimmed in late summer or early
fall. The success of a formal hedge is often
determined by its shearing. Topping is also a
good way to make the hedge grow in width.
Regular care is important to the longevity of
any hedge. Trim, feed and spray your way to
hedge success and fence yourself in with the
beauty of living nature! Shrubs and bushes need not just be poodled and pruned to add interest to the landscape.

TERRY RASTANIS ALWAYS wanted to own
a sailboat. Steve Rastanis has always loved
sailing. It is no wonder that when the two
met and fell in love, a great venture like Spirit
of Holiday Romantic Sailing Getaways would
soon follow. Terry’s newly restored classic
sailboat, Spirit of Holiday, a 1979 Down East
Ketch, can be yours for the whole day or for
just a few hours.
Spirit of Holiday is available for half day
cruises, full day cruises, sunset cruises, wed-
dings (Steve is licensed to officiate) and even
memorial services. Terry is first mate and
gourmet caterer, while Steve is your trusted
captain with nearly four decades of sailing
experience.
“We are essentially your Captain and your
mate. We do what you want to do. If you just
want a quiet river cruise, we’ll do that. If you
want to stop and take a swim, we’ll do that.
We are your personal crew for the day.”
Enjoy cocktails of your choosing, fresh hors

PAIN, INFLAMMATION, FATIGUE, constipa-
tion... The list goes on of typical ailments
that plague us on a daily basis. What do we
do? Most often, we deal with the discomfort
as long as we can. Finally, we’ve had enough
so we make an appointment with a physi-
cian. Nine times out of ten, one leaves with
a script in hand. Finally, relief—but just how
long will it last?
While you should always consult your
physician first about any ailments, it cer-
tainly doesn’t hurt to do a little digging on
your own and find out what you can do to
help your body heal.
That’s right, start your search by looking
in the mirror. Unfortunately, most of the
damage done to our bodies is self-inflicted.
In case you haven’t heard by now, prevention
is the best medicine and prevention starts
with you. Better yet, with what is on your
plate. Being active is simply not enough.
Here are some foods, in conjunction with
an active lifestyle, that have a profound
impact on disease and health:
Cherries (tart): Nature’s pain reliever.
Contains anthocyanins that reduce painful
inflammation which aids those afflicted
with rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes. Even
protects against cancer.
Avocado: High in potassium which guards
against high blood pressure, heart disease or
stroke. High in oleic acid that protects against
breast cancer. Contains tacopherols and caro-
tenoids that kill prostate cancer cells.
Papaya: Prevents macular degeneration
(preserves your eye-sight). Contains papain,
a digestive enzyme used to treat sports inju-
ries and allergies. Contains large amounts of
vitamins C, E and A that can prevent arthro-
sclerosis and diabetic heart disease.

HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS (HPV) is a virus that
causes warts. It is one of the most common
sexually transmitted diseases. An estimated
24 million people in the US are infected with
HPV; 80 percent of the population will contract
the virus during their lifetime. The virus is
spread from person to person contact with
infected cells and with intercourse.
HPV can cause genital warts called condy-
loma accuminata. The warts may go away over
time, but the virus may remain in the body.
Some require treatment to remove the warts.
This can be done with a topical cream, freez-
ing or burning the lesions.
Some types of HPV are designated high
risk and are associated with cancer of the
cervix. New recommendations for pap screen-
ing include an HPV test for women over age 30.
This specifically tests for the high risk types of
HPV. If the virus has persisted beyond the age
of 30, it is more likely to cause problems. Many
women who were unaware that they have
HPV are learning of the disease for the first
time. The news is very upsetting but, it is not
a reason to point fingers, as it could have been
something that either partner had contracted
from a previous relationship. Since men do
not get pap smears, most do not know that
they have HPV. Many people do not know that
they have the disease because the lesions are
not visible to the naked eye or their immune
system is strong enough to control the symp-
toms; i.e. the warts or precancerous cells.
However, with HPV testing your doctor can tell
if you need treatment.
Although there is no cure for HPV, some can
get rid of it. With proper rest and nutrition,
avoidance of tobacco and minimizing stress,
your body could overcome it. A vaccine for
women is in the final stages of development and
soon will be available to the public. Meanwhile,
I encourage annual screening for all to help
control this most problematic disease.

WE OFTEN GET THE question, “Are com-
pounded drugs FDA approved drugs?” No
they are not. Does this mean that they are
illegal since they are unapproved? No it does
not! News reporters, the general public and
sometimes even healthcare providers may
get the idea that only FDA approved drugs are
legal to use in the United States. Not so. FDA
approval is required for drugs that are to be
manufactured and marketed by a manufac-
turing facility in the U.S.
An approved drug is one in which the
manufacturer has received an approval letter
from the FDA that allows the commercial
marketing of the drugs.
An unapproved drug is one that has not
undergone the extensive FDA review and
approval process. Many drugs are unapproved
and still marketed in the U.S. These are drugs
that were in general use prior to 1938. Aspirin
is a prime example of an unapproved pre-
1938 legal drug in wide use in the U.S.
Compounded drugs are in the category of
drugs that are legal and do not required FDA
approval. A compounded drug is one that
is prepared pursuant to a legal prescription
issued by licensed prescriber for a patient and
compounded by a licensed pharmacist in a
licensed pharmacy.
These drugs contain active ingredients
listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia.
Compounding pharmacists may not use
active ingredients listed on the official “Drugs
Not to Be Compounded list.”
Finally, all compounded preparations
are unapproved; this includes intravenous
admixtures, cancer cocktails, pediatric for-
mulations, flavoring of preparations, nuclear
pharmaceuticals, and all the sterile and non-
sterile compounding that occurs daily. These
PREPARATIONS ARE ALL LEGAL. This activity
is governed by state boards of pharmacy.

PERCEPTIONS OF COUNSELING predict atti-
tudes toward seeking it. In popular media
and in everyday conversation, getting help
for a mental health problem by meeting with
a therapist is often referred to as seeing a
“shrink.” This term may be used to reflect the
assumption that the counselor is supposed to
shrink the client’s problems, or fear that the
counselor will somehow shrink or deflate the
client’s sense of control. The fact is that many
people who experience psychological and
interpersonal concerns never pursue treat-
ment, mostly due to what they perceive as
the stigma associated with seeking help.
This stigma is the major obstacle to people
getting the quality health care they deserve.
Counseling is sometimes considered a “last
resort”— something to use only after other
sources of support have failed. It’s an inter-
esting paradox quite frankly; that the percep-
tion of loss of control regarding counseling
that permeates popular media is in direct
conflict with what mental health profession-
als do; that is helping clients regain control
of their lives. Emotional well-being cannot be
separated from physical well-being. “Health”
is both in body and mind.
It is my goal to demystify the process of
mental health counseling and help indi-
viduals improve their emotional and mental
functioning through processing concerns
with an unbiased professional. It’s quite
simple, really. Therapy is about changing
behavior. One of the first questions I ask my
clients is,”What is it about your life that you
want to be different?” For some people this
can be achieved by increasing understanding
of a particular situation, working through
and processing issues both past and present,
the desire for a sense of control of one’s
life, or clarifying one’s role in relationships.
The ability to express thoughts and feelings
as well as goal setting is the major step in
having the life that you want. It is my belief
as a counselor that through processing and
goal setting, people can improve the way they
perceive their current circumstances, and in
many instances, transform their lives.
I would like this monthly mental health
column to be consumer driven, with topics
based on readership input. Let me know what
you want to know more about by logging on
to my website at www.drkristenunkauf.com
and clicking on “Contact Me” to submit
topics that may be addressed in future
columns.
Dr. Kristen UnKauf, LPC is located at 222 N. Vermont St. Ste. H in Covington, and can be contacted via her website or by calling 778-6280. She is a member of the American Counseling Association and has presented at both local and national conferences on the topic of counselor education.

THE HUMAN BRAIN is a marvel. During
infancy the brain is responsible for guiding the
development of the eyes and visual system.
Watching my three year old develop has been
adventurous to say the least. I cannot count
the number of times I’ve had to explain to her
that having that lock of hair over her eye all
the time may lead to amblyopia.
At about 10 years old, the visual system
becomes ‘hardwired’ and the connections
between the eyes and brain are virtually
cemented. Therefore children, in the devel-
opmental phase, benefit from professional
eye examinations. This assessment of the
connection between the eye and the brain is
something that simple screening tests fail to
do because of the complexity of this system.
Good vision is the foundation for success
in school. Many children we see are referred
for headaches, brow ache, poor focusing at
the end of the day, computer related strain
and a decrease in school performance. The
standard of care for children is a compre-
hensive examination if the vision is less
than 20/40 or if there are two or more lines
of difference in vision between both eyes.
Children over six years old are examined if
vision is 20/30 or less or if there is a two line
difference between the eyes. Children with a
family history of childhood problems should
be examined earlier.
At six months old, we examine for general
ocular health problems like nearsightedness,
farsightedness, astigmatism and proper eye
alignment. Pediatric cataracts, congenital
glaucoma, strabismus (“lazy eye”) and retinal
tumors are among some of the things we
can not only detect but treat successfully if
diagnosed early.
Neil F. Notaroberto, MD, is a retinal specialist and practices with Dr. Lisa Pradillo at EyeCare 20/20 located in Mandeville, 985-624-5058, Slidell and Harahan. Visit www.eyecare2020.org for more information and videos of the practice.

School Daze from A-ZWRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED
lifestyle І LESSONS
He has slowed his steps somewhat, perhaps to match the
steps of the one he is protecting and keeping company.
Dr. Mary W. Speed is a licensed therapist and consultant.
PEOPLE START SCHOOL earlier and stay longer
than in the past. Lessons learned in the
classroom are not limited to school but have
broader applications. The value of an educa-
tion, is learning how to approach life and get
along with others. One of my best teachers
didn’t teach anything about his assigned
subject, geography. He talked instead about
flying in a war.
I caught his enthusiasm for aviation and
sensed the excitement and horrors of combat
and inadvertently learned how to study,
which was a tremendous gift. I adapted.
Whether just starting school or returning,
know that teachers, like students have differ-
ent styles. Some professors are auditory, some
visual and some are tactile and some combine
all three. My geography teacher was a story
teller. Part of my study was to learn from him
and how to survive to pass his geography class.
He allowed no substitute for hard work; his
class was an independent study. I’ve learned
that life and most classes are that way.
The classroom is the beginning of the
journey. Your destination is walking across
the stage to receive your diploma. Like my
nephew, Hudson, said at his very recent high
school graduation, “Now, my life, begins!”
Fluently bilingual, he can make this state-
ment in both English and French. Hudson’s
native language is Thai. His teachable spirit is
obvious. Hudson did not just pick up another
language and graduate with honors, he
worked for what he knows.
This fall, school doors open and students
enter. Eventually, every student has a last day
of school. Learning, however, always has an
open door. So be it.

ACNE IS NOT JUST a malady of teenagers.
It often persists long into adulthood or can
appear for the first time in women well past
their teens. Since acne scarring can last for
a lifetime, early treatment is essential. When
over-the-counter products do not provide
lasting relief, a dermatologist uses prescription
creams containing a variety of active ingre-
dients to kill acne-causing bacteria, unclog
pores, and decrease redness and inflamma-
tion. If necessary, oral antibiotics are also used
to attack acne from underneath the skin.
Are there any alternatives if standard treat-
ments do not control acne breakouts and
scarring is a possibility? For thirty years,
dermatologists have used oral isotretinoin to
treat stubborn or severe acne. This extremely
effective medication, which is derived from
Vitamin A and is naturally found in the
body, completely clears acne in almost every
patient after five months, and eighty percent
of those patients stay acne-free for years or
even their lifetime. Most patients tolerate
isotretinoin well, and any side effects are pre-
dominately mild.
A new non-invasive office treatment which
can substantially or permanently resolve
even cystic acne is photodynamic therapy.
After a special photosensitizing agent is
applied to the skin and quickly absorbed
into overly active pores and their oil glands,
a high-intensity light activates the chemical,
shrinking oil glands, killing bacteria, and
unclogging blackheads and white heads.
If scarring is already apparent, the Pearl
Fractional laser is producing unprecedented
improvement with minimal discomfort and
downtime after only one or two treatments.
The result of this collagen-stimulating proce-
dure is smoother skin for a lifetime.
For persistent acne, seek a dermatolo-
gist who can determine the best treatment
option. Dr. Benson is a board certi ed dermatologist and experienced cosmetic surgeon who has been dedicated since 1980 to providing the latest proven techniques and treatments to patients in the U.S. and abroad. Call Benson Dermatology at 985-370-7546 or visit www.BensonDerm.com.

Tips for Increasing ProfitsWHEN DISCUSSING with business owners what the
chamber can do for you, helping to increase profit was a
top response. Of course, I suggested getting the most out
of their membership by attending networking events and
free workshops, but also decided to dig deeper.
Inventory Control: Inventory isn’t an asset, it’s a
liability. Develop programs that reward your employees
for helping you make money. Happy employees make
for happy customers. Offer specials on higher priced,
high value items. Ask your vendors for ideas on how
to control expenses.
Market yourself, your business and your products.
Marketing is a key that most small businesses forget
to do. Marketing can be as easy as networking at a
chamber event or providing your information in the
local chamber directory.
Avoid a last minute crisis with proper planning. Develop
a profit playbook. Sports teams have playbooks, why not
all businesses? Every business needs to have a plan, with
short term and long term goals. Goals that are written
down are more likely to be fulfilled. Keep a log of sales that
worked and grew your profit and ones that did not.
Start measuring. This is the way you improve profit-
ability. What should you measure? Measure revenues,
costs, quality, quantity and time. Most importantly, find
a balance for you and your employees. You are the expert
about your business. Set, maintain and follow your goals
for successful profits.
Entire Region Feeling ImpactOUR BOARD HAS just completed a mid-year review
of our planned goals for 2010. Overall, we have seen
progress, although our plans in some cases are impact-
ed by our latest unexpected disaster.
I have become increasingly involved in reacting to
the impact of the BP oil spill since mid-June. Members
of our board have reached out to representatives of
our growing oil and gas industry, as well as restaurant
owners and grocers.
We will continue to provide information from the
Outreach office to business owners via our website and
more regular emails to our membership. Coast Guard
and BP representatives answered questions at two
recent round-tables and presented critical information
at the close of our Legislative Wrap-Up luncheon on
July 9. The Legislative wrap-up luncheon will soon be
aired on Government Access Channel 10.
We were among the over 20 organizations to strongly
oppose the drilling moratorium and were pleased with
the result. I represented our businesses at coalition
meetings in New Orleans and Baton Rouge and have
been in constant contact with the American Chamber
Association and the U.S. Chamber, seeking their help
in garnering support across the country. It is constant
work for business groups in the region.
While the ecological impact remains unknown,
there is a certainty that Louisiana will feel an eco-
nomic impact. Our voice on behalf of businesses will
not grow weary as the battle continues.

What’s New in Mandeville?I HAVE ANNOUNCED that Edward J. Deano, Jr. has
been appointed as Mandeville’s new City Attorney
and will handle all city legal matters on a contractual
basis. Also, the new City Engineer is Henri I. DeFranco,
President of Principal Engineering, Inc.
We are preparing the budget for the upcoming fiscal
year. While we remain strong and stable, for the first
time in 24 years the City is experiencing reduced
revenue due to the present state of the economy.
Therefore, we are carefully reconsidering all expen-
ditures and will not be filling current positions which
may become vacant.
In other news, we have signed a cooperative endeav-
or agreement with GNOEC to excavate and relocate
mature crepe myrtle trees belonging to the GNOEC on
the southshore and plant them along East and West
Causeway Approaches nearest the North Causeway
entrance. This will enhance and beautify the main
entrances to the city.
Keep up-to-date on the latest news including weather
and oil spill information at www.cityofmandeville.com
or on Facebook. As of this writing there are no storms
in sight. We are experiencing calm seas, allowing
all available resources to work on clean up. Parish
President Kevin Davis has been extremely pro-active
with oil sightings in and near the lake and so far he
has been able to contain any related elements that
have gotten through in the Slidell area. We can only
hope and pray that predictions for this hurricane
season will lessen as these next months pass.

Stay Informed in Slidell
Glass Still Half Full
WE ARE NOW into hurricane season and so far we have
been lucky. It is predicted that this season will be more
active than those of recent years, so I hope everyone
has made their hurricane preparations. If a storm does
head our way, I encourage everyone to stay informed
and act promptly.
We will continue to use every means at our disposal
to reach you with information about evacuation orders
and instructions. As in years past, we will post all
information to www.slidell.la.us. Through our website,
we offer a free online subscription service that enables
you to opt in to receive notices via your email account
when emergency information has been posted—a
good idea when receiving information is so critical.
In an effort to provide information directly to you,
we will reach beyond typical web updates and press
conferences and incorporate the use of Twitter and
Facebook. For those who don’t know, Twitter enables
subscribers to receive instant updates via email or
their cell phones anytime an update is posted. For
a free subscription, simply sign on to twitter.com to
establish your account, then click the “follow” link at
www.twitter.com/cityofslidell.
We will also be posting information on Facebook,
which allows people to receive news updates and view
photos and videos. Go to www.facebook.com to create
a free account, search for “City of Slidell” and click the
“like” button to subscribe to the city’s page.
Last year, we expanded our media capabilities
with the creation of “Slidell TV.” We will continue
to post videos so that citizens who evacuate can
tune in for the most current information. The videos
will be hosted on the City of Slidell’s channel on
YouTube. To find it, visit www.youtube.com, search
for “thecityofslidell” and subscribe to the channel.
Links will also be posted on the city’s website and
Twitter and Facebook pages.
These services can be accessed from virtually any-
where. If you evacuate and have access to a computer
and the internet, you can get continuous updates
about Slidell. I encourage you to take advantage of
these useful capabilities.

I BELIEVE THE GLASS is firmly half full in St. Tammany
Parish. I am a believer in the idea of our circumstances
not creating our attitude. Sometimes we need to take
a step back and look at the big picture. The last few
months have been overwhelming with the Deepwater
Horizon incident and spill in the Gulf. The economy
across the United States has been struggling and we
are certainly not without our share of difficulties in St.
Tammany Parish.
While the national economy has slowed, St. Tammany
continues to welcome new businesses which are relo-
cating to our area. In July, Globalstar relocated both its
corporate headquarters to St. Tammany. This move will
bring 300 new jobs to our area. Such a move is benefi-
cial on many fronts, from real estate to retail sales.
Our efforts to protect our marshland, our lakes and
our coasts are paying off here in St. Tammany. Some
oil encroachment was inevitable but the very small
amounts collected in the last weeks have proven our
initial efforts to be largely successful at protecting
Lakes Pontchartrain, Borgne and Catherine, as well as
surrounding areas. Our local ingenuity has provided
us with the only shallow water skimmer in existence,
with orders for more to be built. Our local commercial
fishermen are proving to be one of the most valuable
resources to the Coast Guard and other groups involved
in cleanup efforts. We have implemented plans involv-
ing multiple parishes and begun using a shoreline
protection material to more effectively protect our pre-
cious marshlands.
Finally, we are finally making strides in our infra-
structure in St. Tammany, particularly in the area of
roads. There are several stimulus and other road proj-
ects which will make getting around on both sides of
the parish more convenient. The Hwy. 21 project in
Covington is nearing completion, which involves not
only the interchange, but will extend from Brewster
Road south of I-12 to Bootlegger Road north of the
interstate. The Hwy. 59 interchange is complete and
will make a huge difference with traffic issues in the
Mandeville area. The roundabout Project at Hwy. 11 and
Brownswitch Rd. in Slidell will be starting soon and will
help solve congestion in that area. The Hwy. 1088 inter-
change is well underway and will help provide access
to I-12 for citizens in the Mandeville/Lacombe area.
As I said earlier, the glass is getting fuller here in St.
Tammany Parish.

YOUR PARENTS WERE there when you took the first
wobbly steps of being a toddler. They were there when
you faced life’s challenges and the scary obstacles life
put in your path.
Now, you watch your parents take their own unsteady
steps. You want to be there to comfort them as they face
the obstacles of aging. You want to help them, without
depriving them of their independence. But, how do you
do that? Of course, each situation is different, depend-
ing upon the needs, resources and abilities of those
involved. Planning ahead is essential.
If your parents have substantial wealth, planning
well in advance is necessary to implement strate-
gies that will allow them to minimize estate taxes.
If your parents are of more modest means, planning
in advance is necessary to qualify your parents for
Medicaid. Without planning, almost all of your parents’
assets could go to paying for in-home care, an assisted
living facility or a skilled nursing facility, with nothing
left to pay for the things in life they enjoy. Planning five
or more years in advance can help your parents qualify
for Medicaid while preserving resources to increase
their quality of life.
Regardless of your parents’ wealth, planning in
advance can help smooth the transition from inde-
pendence to dependence. For example, if your parents’
assets are in a Revocable Living (inter vivos) Trust or an
Irrevocable Living Trust (which is better for Medicaid
planning), you, as trustee, could manage their assets
when they become unable to do so. You could serve as
trustee with them at first. Then, as they age, the logis-
tics will already be in place for you to take over more
responsibility. Your assumption of responsibility might
be gradual, with your parents asking you to take care of
paying the bills this month. Or, your assumption might
be more sudden due to changes in their health. Either
way, you will be ready and able to handle things.
You and your parents have been there for each other
through the years, sharing each other’s joys and chal-
lenges. Just as you relied on them in your early years,
they are relying on you as they face new challenges.

IN BARBARA KINGSOLVER’S The Poisonwood
Bible, the Price family travels to a far corner
in the Belgian Congo during cultural and
racial upheaval in the turbulent 1960’s.
Kingsolver’s empathy for the well-inten-
tioned Price family draws the reader into this
remarkable book about human frailty, suffer-
ing and survival.
The novel depicts this family, led by the
father, (the righteous Reverend Nathan Price)
in a misguided
attempt to bring
religion to the
small village of
Kilanga. Orleana
Price (the long-
suffering wife
of the Reverend
Price), and their
daughters: Rachel,
Leah and Adah
(twins) and Ruth
May describe their
attempts to adapt to life as the only whites
in the village. As such, they reveal Reverend
Price’s inability to do so.
The culture clash begins while checking in
at the airport, when they are ordered to leave
behind certain items they have deemed nec-
essary. After a series of alternately hilarious
and yet touching misfortunes and tragedies,
including the death of a family member, the
surviving family members are finally able to
leave the Congo.
The book follows the family from their
1959 journey in to the Belgian Congo until
the children reach adulthood, concluding in
the 1990’s. By the end of the book, the reader
is emotionally attached to each family mem-
ber—with the exception of the Reverend. The
Congo never really leaves the Price family;
it follows each individual throughout his or
her life, shaping each one differently. It is no
wonder that this book was Oprah’s choice
for her book club in 1999 and a Boeke Prize
winner in 2000.
This title is available at the St. Tammany
Parish Library or at local bookstores.
