The National Reunion Experience By Larry Martin When fellow Compatriot Dan Dzivi asked me to share my experiences at the re-cent national reunion in Vicksburg, I thought, how can I put it all in a couple para-graphs? It was my first one and it will not be my last. I arrived on Wednesday after-noon and checked in my hotel, ran into Rocky Sprott and the Plemons-Shelby Camp bunch in the lobby and visited with them before heading down to the con-vention center. The drive took me past the Vicksburg National Battlefield Park and down to the Riverfront convention center. After I checked in and got my package I walked around taking pictures and visited with those I knew. I was introduced to several Compatriots from other camps across the south. Calvin Allen and Kirt Bar-nett arrived late that afternoon and we all had dinner at a local riverfront café and the day ended for me.

I was up and at it with the sun and arrived at the convention cen-ter about 7 to see if Kirt needed any help with his booth. Calvin and I carried our Camp flag and division flag into the meeting room and got them set up. As Calvin registered, I wondered around a while taking pictures and talking with fellow Texans until the gavel fell at 8 am

The meeting began with the posting of the colors and pledges. The session was about speeches from the Mississippi Lt. Gover-nor, the Sons of Union Veterans commander, the City of Vicks-burg and other SCV dignitaries.

During the first break we all gathered in a corner and I pre-sented Rocky Sprott his full Guardian medal and certificate. Phil Davis, the chairman of the Texas Guardian Committee and member of the Upshur County Patriots Camp presented the full Guardian medal and certificate to Sid Holt of the Colonel Phillip A Work camp.

It was a great moment as our Division leaders, our 3rd Brigade commander Calvin Allen, various camp Commanders, and fellow Texans were about to take pic-tures to commemorate the event another man walked up to me and said “I’m a Guardian too” and asked if he could join in. And

who would turn down CIC Giv-ens request? So that was an honor indeed for Sid and Rocky as Mi-chael Givens congratulated them both, and Phil and I for our work on the Texas Guardian commit-tee.

After the meetings were done I drove around downtown Vicks-burg. I visited the Confederate cemetery and walked among the graves from Texas and my Great Grand Uncles compatriots buried there, and then went to the Battle-field to tour it. After I made it through the Yankee side and toured the USS Cairo, I drove into Confederate lines as a huge thun-derstorm blew into the area and washed out the rest of my tour. So back to the motel I went to change and meet Jerry Puckett and his nephew for dinner, which

ended the day for me.

Friday morning came way too early and I arrived at the Conven-tion center early to visit with friends. At 8 AM the business of the SCV was under way. We voted on 3 amendments to the National constitution and one standing or-der and the morning soon drew to a close.

After the business was done I was introduced to Susan F. Hathaway the darling of Virginia Flaggers and such a Southern Lady she is. And I also took time to take in all the vendors at the convention, and then it was off to the Awards luncheon where Calvin received the 2012-2013 Commendation award for meritorious service at the Camp-Brigade or Division level. After lunch I went back to the Bat-tlefield and

men those soldiers were fighting in the hills and draws, digging trenches and living as they did in the siege.

The rest of the day was spent touring the old Courthouse and other places in town. Saturday morning was the Army of Trans Mississippi meeting and then after the meeting I went and told people

goodbye and went back to pack, check out and drive home as I had a date with my blushing bride that evening. The trip was a good one; I made memories and began plan-ning the trip to Charleston and the 2014 National Reunion. I hope Calvin and I represented our Camp well.

finally made it to the Confederate lines to tour. I stood on the very ground my Great Great Grand Uncle and his son stood to defend the lines, and where they were surrendered and marched off to the prison in Kentucky.

Walking the ground there and see-ing the pictures of the battlefield sure made me appreciate what

Texas division reunion June 7-9, 2013 Pottsboro Texas

By Dan Dzivi

Delegates from the SCV camps from all over Texas gathered at the Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro Texas on the weekend of June 7-9 for the 116th Reunion of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Texas Di-vision. I arrived at the Reunion around noon on Friday morning.

After registration and receiving my delegate package, I visited with the other delegates from our Camp and other SCV compatriots for an hour or so. Friday afternoon, the Texas Division hosted a series of workshops for the benefit of dele-gates. Workshop subjects in-cluded, Recruiting & Retention, Camp Officers Training, Adjutant Training, Public Relations and Building a Camp Newsletter. I was fortunate enough to attend two of the workshops myself and found them very informative. Unfortu-nately, the one workshop I really needed to attend was on Building a Camp Newsletter, but the time slot it was scheduled for conflicted with getting ready for the Memorial Ser-vice scheduled for 5:30, so I was unable to attend.

At 5:30PM, a memorial service was held at the Georgetown Ceme-tery near Pottsboro. I was honored to be asked to participate in the ceremony as a part of the Honor

Guard detail. Friday evening Com-mander Jerry Walden and the other delegates from our Camp and I enjoyed a reception featuring a hors d’oevres and refreshments in Barnacle’s Restaurant & Bar.

The opening ceremonies for the Reunion kicked off at 8:30AM Sat-urday morning. Opening remarks were followed by pledges to the American and Texas flag and hon-ors to the Confederate flag.

Nominations for Texas Division Commander were then opened to the floor. The nominees for this post included Johnnie Hollie and Chad Weldon.

While the votes were being tallied, we heard a report on the status of the current efforts to get SCV li-cense plates issued by the State of Texas. While the original request for SCV was denied, the matter has now been advanced to the Court of Appeals, with the case for the SCV being funded by the Heritage Defense Fund. We also received a very positive report on the pro-gress of the Confederate Memorial now under construction on Or-ange. The dedication for the Me-morial should be held sometime this coming fall, but the exact date is still TBD.

Results of the vote for post of Commander were returned and it was announced that Johnnie Hollie will assume the Commander’s posi-tion for 2013.

Nominations for 1st Lieutenant Commander of the Texas Division were opened and the nominees for this office were David Moore and Michael Hurley. After the nomina-tions were closed, we had a very interesting report on the Sam Davis Youth Camp for this sum-mer, which is a very interesting program indeed.

Results from the voting for 1st Lt Commander were returned and it was announced that David Moore was the winner.

Nominations then opened for the office of 2nd Lieutenant Commander of the Texas Division. The nominees for this office were Gary Bray and Kyle Sims. After the votes were talied, Gary Bray was proclaimed as the new 2nd Lt Commander.

The rest of the morning were spent with consideration of four amendments to the Texas Division Constitution. The first amendment simply changed the wording in the TX Div. Constitution from “By laws” to “Standing Orders” and this measure passed with no opposition. The following three amendments all dealt with the manner in which the last newsletter from the Texas Division each year (and just before the next reunion) would be formatted and distrib-uted to the individual Camps in the Divi-sion.

After the closing of the morning business session, the Annual Awards luncheon was held. It was a real pleasure to see our Camp compatriot and 3rd Brigade Guardian, Larry Martin receive his award for his dedication and all of his hard work for the Guardian program. Several other compatriots from Camp 586 were also recipients of various awards, but those will be announced at a Camp meeting in the near future. A short second business session wrapped up later that afternoon, followed by the Dinner and Ball later that evening.

I had a great time at the 116th Texas Divi-sion Reunion this year and I am very grate-ful for the opportunity to have been able to attend this event as a delegate for our Camp.

Confederate Soldier’s Memorial Dedication Gilmer, Texas

(continued)

On June 22, 2013, the citizens of Gilmer Texas gathered for the dedication of a memorial to their ancestors from Upshur County who served with the Confederate States Army in defense of their homes and families during the “War for Southern Independ-ence”.

The dedication ceremony was preceded by a procession of mem-bers from the Sons of Confeder-ate Veterans from local chapters nearby who were joined by other SCV compatriots from other camps from all across the State of Texas. Our own Camp 586 was well represented by three mem-bers riding with the SCV’s Texas Cavalry Division, led by 3rd Bri-gade Commander Calvin Allen. They were also joined for the oc-casion by local members of Com-pany B. Terry’s Texas Rangers.

The small procession wound around the town square and formed itself in ranks just in front of the Upshur County Museum, where the new monument is now located. Crowd assembled heard from several local speakers as well as dignitaries from Texas Division SCV on the historical significance their ancestors made for the de-fense of their southern homeland.

CAMP 586 monthly CAMP Meeting for JUly WEATHERFORD TEXAS

The monthly meeting for Gover-nor Samuel WT Lanham Camp 586 for the month of July was held on Tuesday, July 2nd at Granny’s Country Kitchen. The meeting opened with Camp Com-mander Jerry Walden introducing our guests in attendance followed by. the Pledges of Allegiance to the US and Texas flags and the Oath of Honor to the Confeder-ate Flags, followed by the reading of the Charge to the SCV read by Ray Bell and then followed by the

singing of “Dixie”, lead by Debbie Wilson.

Commander Walden opened dis-cussions on the upcoming SCV National Reunion in Vicksburg, MS. The Camp Delegates to the reunion were selected and pre-liminary plans for travel made.

The next item for discussion was the Camp’s participation in the upcoming Weatherford Peach Fes-tival. Two of the parking lots used in years past were being closed this year so our manning roster for the event was revised accordingly. Arrangements for our participa-tion in the 4th of July Parade in Stephenville were also finalized.

Our guest speaker for the eve-ning was Mike Patterson. Mike gave a very interesting presenta-tion on problem settlers in the frontier areas faced with Indian raids in the frontier areas in and

around the Elm Creek Valley near Ft. Belknap in western Young County during the period of the Civil War. On October 13, 1864 Comanche warriors staged a series of raids on pioneer set-tlers in the area with devastating results. Mike’s presentation cov-ered the entire timeline of the raids with great detail. His mate-rial was very well researched and documented. Thanks, Mike!!

Camp Adjutant Vaughn Oliver read the minutes of the June meeting and the financial report. Motions were made, seconded and approved to accept both as read.

The meeting concluded with Ray Bell reciting the Charge of the SCV, the singing of the Bon-nie Blue Flag and the closing prayer by Chaplain Robert Smart.

Deo Vindice!

I attended the June meeting of the Robert E Lee Camp # 239 and the camp Commander Barry Turnage opened the floor for me to speak on the Guardian Pro-gram. Indeed this is always a fa-vorite subject of mine; trouble is I was speaking after David Moore, 1st LT Commander of the Texas Division, always a powerful speaker. David was speaking on the subject of “what have you done for the SCV?” And indeed it made everyone think on this subject.

Some members come to meet-ings, have a meal with his broth-ers, listens to the program and goes home, and will return again next month for the same, some members do parades only, some dedications only, some a combi-

“OFFENSE OR DEFENSE?” nation of the two. Some mem-bers are re-enactors; some are beginning to explore the roots that bind us all. And that makes for a good camp, where the membership has diverse activities to make the camp as a whole strong. But let’s ask ourselves, when we read articles on renam-ing of parks, or defacing monu-ments, or hate filled letters to the editor spouting politically correct nonsense, what do you do? Do you write the editor with facts and strong positions? Do you go protect these monuments? Do you flag the City-County-State buildings to show we are a band of brothers who stand as one? Or do you gripe about it to your friends-family or on Facebook?

My point is simple, the stirring words of Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee gave us in “The Charge” should inspire all of us to action. In it he states “To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier’s good name”. And what he was telling us, is we can-not just sit on the couch; we must be proactive in the Sons of Confederate Veterans as a whole that we cannot build a fort and stand in defense, no to win this we must go on the offense. Weather it is handing out a card to everyone you meets and asks

3rd Bde Guardian, SCV Camp 586 Treasurer & Newsletter Contribu-tor Larry Martin

“do you have Confederates in your family tree? Would you like to find out?” Or if you attend government meetings when they are addressing items of interest to the SCV, or are flagging these meetings. You can also attend events with your camp or other camps, remember as long as you are in good standing with the Sons of Confederate Veterans you can attend any camp meeting you choose and will be made welcome. I know, I personally attend the meetings in the 3rd brigade and some in the 4th and 7th as well. I learn so much about these members and how they honor the Confederate soldiers’ good name in each and every one of them. The public events camps do are some of the best recruiting opportunities; every-one likes a picture taken with a uniformed Confederate. And I mean everyone…

You can attend memorials and dedications, always a stirring event, just like the ones in Ard-more Oklahoma and in Gilmer Texas on Saturday 22 June 2013. Yes it is hot, but we all take pre-cautions and the public love these and thank everyone after-wards. Plus you get to be with like minded brothers from other

camps and exchange ideas on how to make a camp stronger and better in all ways.

You can also choose to join in the cemetery survey now going on in the Texas Division, ask your brigade coordinator how, or ask me and I will teach you. You will find it is very relaxing, very stirring when you do the research and find real genuine heroes who are buried in that cemetery. And you can also choose to guard these heroes’ graves. I myself guard 12 plus 3 entire cemeteries I look after. And I flag more cemeteries on Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Confederate Heroes Day in January. There are hundreds of cemeteries with thousands of our Confederate Soldiers in them unattended and un-guarded much less having the flag of the Confederacy proudly flying over it.

Lt. General S.D. Lee also said “The guardianship of his his-tory” and the cemetery survey

“OFFENSE OR DEFENSE?” and guardian program sure fits that area of the charge to a “T.” It is very important, not only for us, but for the future generations as well. The survey will one day be put on the Texas Division website for all to see and learn where these heroes rest in honor.

Lt General S.D. Lee also charged us in another area “Remember it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented to future generations” This is another way to serve the Sons of Confed-erate Veterans by developing programs with the facts a child can understand. Visit schools and teach these children. Give them the desire to learn more and one day join the SCV. Show them that pride in the Confederate States of America and her heroes are something to be proud of and when they gain that pride they will not let detractors mis-lead them. If only you and I had learned more in our youth. Think

of how we could have helped influence today’s society instead of what we have now.

So, I charge you, my brothers get up out of the easy chair, and find your passion for the Confederacy and how you wish to truly honor it. Go serve the SCV with pride. Go on the offense and find a project that excites you. Work with your camp to make it count. Show the other camps how you and your camp are serving and they too will begin to serve. Soon you have stronger brigades, more men rising up in the community, and showing all that the South was right.

Show them we are a diverse group who teach the truth and we are not a hate group. Show your community we are a charity that we help all who need our help. Show civic pride. Show people we are polite Southern Gentleman of our word. Show them we are men of conviction. Show the South leads the way!

Booth ever this year with the debut of the new "Recruiting Booth" that was designed and built by Larry Martin with a gen-erous donation by Robert Smart. We had a lot of good help there and had too much fun doing it. Weatherford always shows a lot of interest in history and their Confederate ancestors.

Our camp also started the Peach Pedal races at the Weatherford High School again this year with a pistol salute this time from members of our Cav-alry Unit. Confederates starting those races has become a tradi-tion here and we make a lot of good appearances here in our community.

Our Camp had plenty of help at the Parking lot that we man-age for the Chamber of Com-merce and sold a lot of Festival tickets as well. We even had some of our Cavalry troopers mounted and helping with this detail as well.

I am so proud of the way this SCV Camp actually works to-gether for the good of the Camp, the SCV, and to repre-sent our ancestors in ways that would make THEM proud.

Coming up are Texas Division awards to be presented. Later

National awards to be presented. And It is time to get busy work-ing on the Christmas Parade. (Remember, this SCV Camp is the ONLY Camp West of the Mississippi that totally owns, organizes, insures, and puts on a huge parade of this size and im-portance. We GIVE this to our community to thank them for the great relationship we have with them.....Oh yea, we also get a lot of SCV exposure too). Hope to see everyone at the meetings, we need YOUR input, this is Your SCV Camp and I know you are as proud of it as I am.

Jerry Walden

From the Commander’s Desk

SCV Camp 586 Commander Jerry Walden

We have a lot to be proud of as SCV members here in Texas in 2013.

Texas had a Great representation in Vicksburg at the SCV National Convention and walked away with a lot of awards as well.

Here in Texas just prior to the SCV National Convention we had our own Texas Division Conven-tion at Pottsboro which was an-other huge turn out. Elections were held, State and Brigade offi-cers were selected from a lot of hard choices, and the SCV is off to another two years of good Leadership. Our own Calvin Allen was elected as the Texas Divi-sion's 3rd Brigade Commander. (Calvin was also selected by the Texas Division to be the Com-mander of the Texas Cavalry Di-vision just prior to that).

Along with all of this, Our Camp 586 was well represented in the Weatherford Peach Festival which was a good as anything the Peach State, Georgia, could put on.

We had the Best Living History

managed the parking at Hall Middle School, and presented a positive picture at the Living History Booth. Each of the workers received a personal Thank You via email. Our camp has a lot to be proud of and we present a good positive image to the public. This is the type of representation that both says a lot for our camp and honors our ancestors. We have many op-

portunities for this meaningful type of display, and we should always be mindful of our public image. I personally am proud of each and everyone of our camp members. We continue to be a Great example for the Confeder-acy and our supportive ancesto-ries.

God Bless Texas!

a lot of activity that our Camp has been involved with in the past two months and lot of news to report in this issue. National and State level Reunions, Monu-ment dedications, and the annual Weatherford Peach Festival. And of course, this is all in addition to our regular monthly meetings. I am always proud to see our Camp so well represented at all of these events. It is truly a sign of the level of dedication within our ranks when we turn out numbers for this many activities in a short time span.

As others have stated else-where in this month’s edition, we each have our different ways of participating in all of these vari-ous activities. We all have differ-ent areas of interest , and differ-

The first order of business I’d like to address is an apology to the Camp 586 membership for lack of a newsletter for the month of June. My trip out of the country on company business that month really wrecked my schedule for several weeks. Therefore I am labeling this as the June / July is-sue and will trying to catch up news for both months in this is-sue. Thanks for your understand-ing.
