Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee General Commander United Confederate Veterans
April 25, 1906
1823-1898 In 1861 during the War Between the States, William Harrison Martin enlisted in the Confederate Army and served in Company K of the 4th Texas Infantry that was assigned to Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Martin gained his nickname because of his refusal to salute superior officers. Instead, he would politely tip his hat and say “howdy.” According to the Texas Historical Commission, Howdy Martin fought in the Eastern theater of operations in all of the fighting. After the signing of the surrender terms at Appomattox, Major Martin and Captain W. T. Hill led the remaining members of Hood’s Texas Brigade back to the Lone Star State. He was born September 2, 1823, in Twiggs County, Georgia, to Benjamin and Charlotte Martin. His early schooling was in Alabama where he was admitted to the Bar. In 1850 he moved to Athens, Texas, and started a law practice in Henderson County. He represented Freestone, Limestone, Henderson, and Navarro counties from 1853 to 1858 in the Texas Senate. Answering the call, he raised a company of volunteers that became a part of Hood’s Texas Brigade. In April, 1864, he was promoted from captain to major. After the war, Martin was elected district attorney. He married Martha E. Gallimore of Navarro County and the couple had seven children. He was later elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1887 and served in the 50th and 51st Congresses 1887-1891 before retiring again to his farm near Athens. Howdy Martin was a member of the Hill County Camp of Confederate Veterans when he died at his final home in Hill County on February 5, 1898. A lawyer, a Confederate officer who served the entire Civil War and a congressman, at 76 years old Major Howdy Martin was buried at the Hillsboro City Cemetery.

THE CHARGE TO THE
SONS OF CONFEDERATE
VETERANS
Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, you should never wish to do less.
General Robert E. Lee
1. The June SCV Camp Meeting was held at the Calvary Baptist Church Gym with Commander Jimmy Abney
presiding.
2. Following Cmdr Abney’s welcome and introduction of guests, Chaplain Jim Day led us in prayer prior to our
meal. We had 19 guests and members in attendance.
3. Compatriot Ray Brown led the pledges and salutes to the flags and reading of the Charge to the SCV.
4. Commander Abney introduced our guest speaker Mr. Charles Hayes who
is an author, a very knowledgeable historian of Civil War battles, and a very
talented artist. His presentation gave us a new twist to the life of Thomas J.
“Stonewall” Jackson. His slide show included many of his cartoon draw-
ings of Stonewall and others. In addition he backed up his battle statistics
with his many detailed maps. He autographed several books that members
purchased. We all enjoyed his lecture.
5. Adjutant/Treasurer Jim Ogburn read the minutes from June and he also
gave the camp’s financial report.
6. In new business, Cmdr Abney proudly announced the news he received at
the 117th State Reunion in Houston. The
Major W. H. Howdy Martin Camp is now a “Four Star Camp.” Five Compatriots were given certificates and medals for their hard work and dedication to our camp.
7. Comdr Abney next presented Jan Patterson with a plague from
the 117th State Reunion honoring our late Commander and Chaplain
of the SCV Trans-Mississippi Brother Len Patterson for his years of
dedication and leadership in answer to the Charge with a
“Lifetime Achievement Award.”
8. Cmdr Abney announced our delegates that will travel to North
Charleston, South Carolina to represent our Martin Camp at the
119th Nationals Convention July 17-19. When asked if one more member would like to attend, Aide de Camp/
Historian Jesse Giles volunteered.
Our four delegates are Abney, Lynch, Day and Giles.
9. In other business, Adjutant/Treasurer Jim Ogburn proposed two applications for membership be approved.
New members are Mike Coleman from Trinidad, and Jackie Blaylock from Canton. They filled out their applica-
tions at our recruiting table at the recent Cain Center Gun Show. Further discussion led another approval for mem-
bership for Rayan Tarrant. In addition, one of our guests submitted his ancestor chart to our camp genealogy advi-
sor, Jan Giles to officially approve him joining us. Pending approval our new membership totals 47 and one cadet.

11. In old business, Adjutant/Treasurer Jim Ogburn also asked consideration for an annual Martin Camp
Award to be announced at the end of the year that would honor someone in our area law enforcement
officers and support staff. He suggested the Police Chief would select a winner for the “Act of Courage.”
He proposed that Compatriot Ray Brown be in charge of the award design and it would be framed. Our
camp would asked to be invited to be a part of the ceremony.
12. Jim Ogburn also extended an invitation to the camp to be a part of his 4th of July Fireworks Celebration at
his home on Lake Athens.
13. A discussion was held about securing CSA Veteran markers and the possibility of a Goodgame Cemetery
dedication. A company in Cushing may make them and they can be found on line.
14. 8th Brigade Commander Marc Robinson was asked how the UDC and the OCR work together to support
the SCV camp. Also, if the camp bylaws address women joining the SCV. Robinson shared how camps
may have “ladies of the camp” and the different roles of the UDC and the OCR. He shared where we could
read more and will follow up with the state and local guidelines in an email.
15. Before being dismissed with singing “Dixie,” several were added to our camp prayer list.

Greetings,
Summer vacation took a toll on attendance
for our meeting Thursday night. It is always hard to
have a meeting on a holiday week but we did have
about 20 members and guests. We had a very good
meeting and enjoyed another wonderful pot luck
dinner together. The historical program presented by
author and illustrator Mr. Charles Hayes of Tyler was
very informational on Stonewall Jackson. He is a life-
time member of the SCV and a board member for
the Camp Ford Historical Association. His slide show
with maps and cartoons from his books was interest-
ing. We learned what Stonewall was really like as a
man and what it was like to serve him and why he
was so loved and respected by his camp.
I had several medals to give out to our members
for their service to our camp. Given to me at the SCV
Texas Reunion in Houston, I presented Ms Jan Patterson
with a “Lifetime Achievement Award” for Brother Len for
his service to the SCV. I was also very honored to pre-
sent a framed certificate announcing that we are a
FOUR STAR CAMP
this year. A very big thank you to everyone who worked
so very hard to get this award. It is a big honor to achieve
this in only three years as a SCV Camp.
Our National Reunion is the 16th through the
19th this month. We will have a full slate of delegates
going this year. I would like to ask for your prayers for
our men as they travel to and from the reunion in South
Carolina.
Again thank you for all of your hard work that
makes our Major W. H. Howdy Martin Camp 1241 so
successful.
Your Commander,
Jimmy Abney

Howdy,
Voting in three more camp members at our July meeting was just what
I needed after returning from our State Reunion. At the Reunion everyone was
excited and charged to go home and maintain that level of energy. Like I said,
getting to welcome new members at our very next meeting was perfect!
I still have available about 40 Confederate Flags for the camp to use to
honor our Southern veterans’ final resting places in Henderson County. I also
have a few of the metal pipes with the camp tags attached to hold the flags
more securely next to a grave.
There are many possibilities of using the CSA Website I am designing.
The links within the data base will help us to search our own families for addi-
tional Confederate Veteran Ancestors. It will also help finding veteran ances-
tors for new members. How wonderful at our July meeting a first-time guest
brought his own genealogy chart filled out and is ready to find his ancestor.
Thank you to everyone who gave me their membership dues at the
meeting. I briefly asked if everyone received their renewal and did not notice
any comments. Please let me know if you need assistance or have questions.
One last comment about our meeting, Ms Jan Patterson’s pork loin was the
best I have ever tasted and I told her so!
Let us all keep up the good work in our answer to The Charge!

A Christian Nation? 6-10-2012
The question was asked recently, "Can the United States survive as a Christian Nation?" I don't
wish to be argumentative, but to me the answer is obvious. No! How can any nation survive being some-
thing it isn't to begin with? Perhaps a better question would be, "Can the United States return to being the
Christian nation our founding fathers and first settlers envisioned?"
Before anyone gets bent out of shape, allow me to ask you this. If the United States is a Christian
nation, why has prayer been removed from our schools? If this is a Christian nation, why is same sex
marriage even being considered? If this is a Christian nation, why is aids a problem and abortion an
issue? If this is a Christian nation, why is there plywood over a cross in a California desert? If this is a
Christian nation, why was the Ten Commandments removed from a court house, and nativity scenes not
allowed on the grounds? If this is a Christian nation, why are so many churches almost empty, while
sports arenas are packed? If this is a Christian nation, why is there so much nudity, immorality, and vul-
garity on television, and why do so many people, not only watch it, but enjoy it?
Naturally I could go no and on, and so could many of you, so allow this to suffice: If the United
States is a Christian nation, could, or would, it's current president stand up in front of the world and
pronounce, "America is not a Christian nation." and say it with pride, as if it were a good thing? The
answer to all these questions is, no. A Christian nation would not permit such things.
There is a reason for this decay of the principles upon which this country was founded, and God
has not left us to wonder what it is. As the Apostle Paul was sitting in a Roman prison awaiting his
execution, God inspired him to write,
"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come." Then, in the follow-
ing three verses he explains why. "For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters,
proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection,
trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent (no self control), fierce, despisers of those that are good,
traitors, heady, high minded, lovers of pleasures more that lovers of God." 2 Timothy 3:1-4
You might want to read that list again. It would seem as if God was looking two thousand years
ahead at most of the people in the United States.
The question is, was he looking at you? I don't know if God will
save the United States. I can't even say He will save the South, although I
hope so. But, I do know He will save you. If you have not committed your
life to Christ, accepted Him as your Lord, and been saved by His power and
grace, then I pray that under His convicting Spirit, you will do so.
Because, this country may not survive as a Christian nation, but you
will survive as a Christian person.
Eternally!

Sometimes being retired does have its advantages. As I was on my tractor in the field Monday I received a call from the
Athens Kiwanis Club. Their guest speaker unexpectedly had to cancel a program for the club luncheon on Tuesday. I had
given my card to a Kiwanis Club member at their pancake dinner earlier this year and the program director asked if I could talk
to them. I had the prepared slide show that I had used at two other meetings and agreed to be there. A trip to Office Deport for
additional camp brochures and newsletters and I was ready.
I have always respected this club for their work in our community and appreciate being invited to their luncheon. I
reminded those in attendance that the late Mike Stover was one of their club members and also served with the Howdy Martin
Camp’s first elected officers. Compatriot Stover was our own 2nd Lieutenant Commander and we all miss him.
Having our Camp recognized the next day on Wednesday on the front page of the Athens Review was very much
appreciated. After reading the article, it is apparent the reporter did some research from our camp website and I thank him.

The History of The Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1241 Athens, Texas
October, 2011 to Present
Days even weeks before the first organizational meeting of the now Major W. H. Howdy Martin SCV Camp 1241 in Athens, Texas, many ideas were exchanged between key members from several SCV Camps in surrounding communities. On September 27, 2011, 2nd Lt. Commander of the Texas 8th Brigade Marc Robin-son submitted an article to the Athens Daily Review announcing that the “Sons of Confederate Veterans to Charter a New Camp in Athens.” Brother Len Patterson of Trinidad was a current member of the O.M. Robert Camp 178 in Waxahachie and was willing to help start another SCV camp in Henderson County. These key members all had the same desire to start another SCV camp in answer to the SCV Charge. Mr. Marc Robinson was instrumental in the start of the John H. Reagan SCV Camp 2156 in Palestine where he was a current member. He shared his vision at other SCV camp meetings of starting an Athens camp in order to reach new members. Another key supporter was Mr. Johnnie Holley of the Tyler Captain James P. Douglas SCV Camp 124 and also Commander of the Texas 8th Brigade. He volunteered to present a historical program for the organizational meeting. Dr. Jim Ogburn of Athens discovered through his interest in genealogy that he had at least six ancestors that served in the Confederate Army. He was also disap-
pointed to learn that the only SCV camps near him were in Tyler and Palestine. Mr. Robinson’s article to the newspaper invited residents to learn more about their Southern ancestors and to see if they qualified to become charter members of the new planned camp. The first organizational meeting was on Monday, October 3, at 6:30 pm at the Athens Masonic Lodge on Highway 175. More than 20 attended this first meeting.
First Organizational Meeting at the Athens Masonic Lodge

The first meeting indicated that there was a definite interest in Athens to begin a new camp, so a second meeting was planned. Mr. Robinson submitted another article to the Athens Daily Review inviting residents to attend on Thursday, October 27th at the East Texas Arboretum. Attendance was about the same and encouraging to those who were working hard to see an Athens Camp become a reality.
During the following months interested charter members met to discuss the basics with the help of several advisors from other SCV Camps. They adopted a set of bylaws, agreed to meet the first Thurs-day evening of each month and opened a small bank account. The necessary paperwork was filed to become a nonprofit historical and patriotic organization. Nominations were made and presentations were given for the name of the new camp. It was learned that Athens had an active SCV Camp in the l960’s. The majority voted to assume that same camp name of the Major W. H. Howdy Martin Camp with the same camp number of 1241. Again, the paperwork was filed with the state and national offices and approval was granted. Camp officers were elected from 22 charter members.

Camp Adjutant and Treasurer Terry Teems vol-unteered to find or make our very first official camp flag. He recalls that “it was a joint effort.” We found a flag at an antique mall in Malakoff that inspired Dr. Jim Ogburn and me. I asked Jim if we could design a St. Andrews Cross which is the flag of Scotland, on a blue field which is also used as an old Navy signal flag. We bought the antique flag and used it to sketch a design similar to the General Taylor Flag which is also known as the Flag of the Army of the Trans-Mississippi. It is best recognized by its reverse colors. Teems drew his idea to scale and took it to a camp meeting for approval. A quilter in Athens, Francis Cotton, agreed to make it for us. The camp bought some of the material to go with the fab-ric she had on hand. Teems took her his full size pattern and she put it together. We adopted the flag and then Chaplain Jimmy Abney had the camp name, number and city added.
“A joint effort” designed and made our camp flag.
Adjutant/Treasurer Terry Teems contacted state officials to receive permission to restore the script on the
1965 Confederate Park Monument. Sarah J. Brown, Curator of the Henderson County Historical Museum and wife of
Compatriot Jimmy Brown directed Teems to the proper authorities. Compatriot Brent Rains and Sgt. at Arms/Color
Sgt Joseph Ables worked painstakingly to repair the worn inscription on the marker. One side speaks of Martin and
the other focuses on Henderson County’s contributions to the Confederacy. The entire camp was so very pleased and
proud of these men for their dedication to restore this historical monument of our Major W. H. Howdy Martin SCV
Camp 1241. Confederate Park is located on Highway 19 South in Athens.

The new Athens SCV Camp 1241 was announced in theTyler Morning Paper on January 13, 2012.
Only one week later on January 19, 2012, a rededication was held in Athens for the restored marker that was erected in 1965 at the Confederate Park in Athens in honor of Major W. H. Howdy Martin, a true Texas Confederate War hero. Athens Mayor Randy Daniel greeted a crowd of citizens and newly sworn in charter camp members. Pledges to the flags were said as the colorguard posted the colors and Adjutant/Treasurer Terry Teems played taps. 1st Lieutenant Commander Dr. Jim Ogburn presented a brief biography of Major W. H. Howdy Martin and Commander Len Patterson read an inspirational poem depicting a conversation between a Confederate veteran and a child. Restoration of the Confederate historical marker was noted as it was officially unveiled once again. The ceremony was proudly published in the Athens Review on 1-20-12.
