As winter turns to spring, voters begin to emerge from political hibernation and start thinking about the people who will appear on the ballot for the primary. Some voters, or potential voters, hibernate too long, and find themselves asking whether or not they will be able to vote in the June. As you talk to your friends about supporting our Republican candidates in 2015, keep some simple rules in mind: - Anyone over the age of 18 can register to vote, but a per- son must be a resident of Somerset County at least thirty days before the elec- tion to vote here. A person must turn in their registra- tion information three week before the election. - There are two basic ways to register to vote: 1) in-person at a location authorized by law to accept registrations and 2) by mail to the New Jersey Secretary of State?s office. The forms to register are available online at the New Jersey Division of Elections website. The best place to register in person is the Board of Election. People also can register when they get their drivers licenses, but I have found, in practice, that this way isn? t always the most reliable. - If a person has moved outside their election district since the last election, but still resides in the same county, that person votes by provisional ballot in their new district. They should not vote in their old district. • ? What elected posi tion do you cur rently hold, and how long have you held i t for?Br idgewater Tow nship Counci l . I have held i t since Januar y 2008. I am in the Four th year of my second term and cur rently seeking election to my thir d term.? What inspir ed you to r un for public off ice?

I can?t say that there was any one thing that inspir ed me to r un. An unexpected oppor tuni ty presented i tself for me to be able to r un, which would afford me the abi l i ty to help r un the tow n where I grew up and that I love. I was provided immense guidance and suppor t from

former Somerset County Republican Chairman Dale Flor io. To have

someone l ike that bel ieve in my abi l i ty to r un a successful campaign and govern was incredibly impor tant to me and led me to take the steps necessar y to throw my hat in and ultimately w in.

? What has the exper ience been l ike for you?

I love being a counci lman, and I look for ward to r unning for my thir d term this year. General ly most of our counci l meetings are r elatively quiet w i th routine matter s, however, I?ve had the oppor tuni ty to weigh-in on matter s of signi f icant impor tance to our Tow nship and I feel l ike I have been able to affect outcomes and create better government for our r esidents. Obviously, some matter s are

    - I f a per son has moved outside their county since the last election, and fai led to r egister in their new county, they w i l l not be permitted to vote in the new county. However, i f the move occur red less than three weeks before the election, they w i l l sti l l be permitted to vote in the old county.- What i f a per son wants to vote Republican in a pr imar y? This is a ver y common question to get this time of year. I f they are an undeclared voter, i t?s an easy process. The voter simply needs to show up to vote on pr imar y day and declare which par ty?s pr imar y they want to vote in. They?ll be al lowed to vote in that par ty?s pr imar y and, going for ward, be r egistered as a member of that par ty. They can change back to undeclared by f i l ing out a simple form w ith the County Clerk. Conversely, members of other pol i tical par ties must actively sw itch par ties w ith the County Clerk i f they want to vote in the other par ty?s pr imar y.As Republican activists, i t?s our r esponsibi l i ty to get the vote out for our par ty?s candidates. I f we don?t ensure our voter s are proper ly r egistered, however, we?ll never even get our get-out-the-vote effor t off the ground. Register ing our voter s ? and know ing the basics of how to get i t done ? is the essential f i r st step to w inning any election. When in doubt, the New Jersey Division of Elections website is an excellent r esource for al l the forms and general information a person needs to be sure there vote is counted on Election Day. There?s no greater example of waste in the democratic process than having a voter show up to suppor t our candidate on Election Day only to

f ind out that, for whatever r eason, they aren?t proper ly r egistered. A small amount of preparation can avoid this outcome altogether and bank cr i tical votes for our candidates at ever y level. ?

As Republ ican activists, it?s our responsibil ity to

get the vote out for our party?s candidates.

  • some matter s are tougher than others, but I?m lucky enough to work w ith four other counci l members who get along, r espect each other even when we disagree, and al l share the same goal of a better Br idgewater.? What is your favor i te pol i tical movie?

I r eal ly l iked Lincoln w i th Daniel Day Lew is. Most Lincoln movies focus on the Civi l War i tself . I l iked that this one focused on how di f f icult i t was for him to get the 13th amendment passed, and how impor tant his actions were for the future success of the nation after the conclusion of the Civi l War. I also r eal ly l ike Thir teen Days.

? Who is your pol i tical hero, and why?

I?m a big fan of John Adams. He was instr umental in near ly ever y aspect of our countr y?s founding ? from the r evolution to actually governing. He may not always have been as polished as Thomas Jeffer son or James Madison, but I think he showed immense

courage and for ti tude in the face of the f i r st r eal instance of par tisan poli tics in our countr y. He had perhaps the toughest job of al l fol low ing Washington, and i t was on his shoulders to show that our Nation?s success was not dependent on one person.

? Advice to YRs who aspir e to r un for public off ice?

Get involved in your local tow nship, whether i t be on the Recreation Board, Open Space Committee, or local Republican Municipal Committee. This w i l l give you the best idea as to the issues in tow n, who the people are, and bui ld your local network. After that, you just have to take advantage of oppor tuni ties, which don?t always come at the per fect moment. However, i f you wait for that per fect moment to r un, chances are you never w i l l . ?

HAVE IDEAS? WANT TO BE MORE INVOLVED?

  • ? What made you want to get involved in pol i tics?

When my kids were l i ttle, the changes I was seeing in our countr y and state made me respond posi tively when my neighbor asked me i f I 'd l ike to get involved. He offered me a seat on the RMC and I got star ted working

on the local campaign. Having chi ldren made me acknow ledge that I have to "walk the walk," to l ive my values not just say them, as chi ldren mimic us. I wanted to set r ight values and be par t of the solution, corny as i t sounds, to bui ld a better wor ld now that I am

    leaving new, l i ttle people in i t.

? How long have you been a Municipal Chair ? Elected June, 2014, so less than a year.

? What has the exper ience been l ike for you?

Rewarding but challenging, as our previous Chairman made i t look seamless.

? What is your proudest accomplishment as Municipal Chair so far? Holding the group together through a di f f icult tr ansi tion, and now bui lding up a younger, talented yet r elatively new team.

? What is your favor i te par t about being a Municipal Chair ?The tr ust, loyalty and grati tude from the team. And w inning elections, of course.

    ? Least favor i te par t?

Confronting individuals w ith their ow n agendas and/or egos.? What is your favor i te pol i tical movie and/or book?We l ike the ser ies of books by Bi l l O'Rei l ly but in seeking guidance for being Chair, I asked a r espected leader about a book on his desk, The Ar t of War , often cal led a classic for pol i tics and business (as well as war ). Like Proverbs, i t is ful l of w isdom and nuggets of w isdom that I digest, over and over.? Who is your pol i tical hero?

Histor ical ly, Abe Lincoln. But, in some ways Governor Chr istie

is one of my contemporar y poli tical heroes, since i t takes courage and strong character to govern as a Republican in such a blue state. And I l ike his tough, dir ect NJ style.

? Advice to YRs who aspir e to become Municipal Chair s one day?Just do i t. You must have a hear t to ser ve, to bui ld up others and coach them, to promote a vision and have passion to lead. I f pol i tics is in your blood, and l i fe is about people, then being a Municipal Chair is a natural. And w inning ... you must have the dr ive to w in. ?

    "You must have a hear t t o serve, t o buil d up ot hers and coach t hem, t o pr omot e a vision and a passion t o l ead"

  • The Republican Par ty platform connects w ith scores of young people across Somerset County. We l ive in a small corner of the wor ld that is r un by, for the most par t, good local government. So, the question; who car r ies on this tr adi tion and what is that f i r st grassroots step of elected off ice? It al l star ts w ith your tow n?s Republican Committee!

Each community in Somerset County is broken up into many election distr icts, which have 4 elected r epresentatives. A male and female r epresentative r un ever y other year in the June pr imar y election for the Republican and (clear s throat) Democrat par ty. These individuals ser ve in many ways in their posi tions and are the foundation of the par ty on a county, state and national level, too. Al l pol i tics is local and i t al l star ts w ith these men and women.

As a Young Republican you should not hesi tate to r un for any off ice! A great way to get star ted is r unning for your election distr ict?s male or female par ty r epresentative. Pick up a peti tion at the local clerk?s off ice, go visi t the local Republican club and get involved. I t is up to us to car r y the tor ch in Somerset County. Knock on ever y door in your neighborhood--that is what I did, and i t worked! I t is a great way to meet people and engage in the local and broader issues. When I r an in Distr ict 32 in Br idgewater, i t was a so much fun talking about ever ything from the tr aff ic caused by the Route 22 road constr uction to the countless Obama administr ation scandals.

In any str ucture, after time the foundation star ts to settle, deter iorate or even sink. To r estore that str ucture you must provide new mater ials and reinfor cements. That is where we, the Young Republicans, come in! We can make a great impact in our par ty i f

we al l just r un for off ice. I f you lose, that is OK--I lost the f i r st time I r an for county committee, but tr ied again after two years and won! This goes for any off ice: counci l , mayor,

    fr eeholder and

school board. Throw in and go for the goal. Do not get

discouraged i f you are not accepted or welcomed by the cur rent group or club, or any claims you do not have enough exper ience or

    education.

I always r efer to a quote by Calvin Coolidge and hope you w i l l too: ?Nothing in the wor ld can take the place of Persistence. Talent w i l l not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men w ith talent. Genius w i l l not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education w i l l not; the wor ld is ful l of educated derel icts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ?Press On? has solved and always w i l l solve the problems of the human race?.?
