Camp. Forty two youth from 9 different counties including military 4-H youth participated in the 3-day weekend residential camp. Somerset campers included: Gracie Gandy, Mariana Day, and Rachel Howell. Somerset camp staff: Jennifer Howell, William

Gandy, Timothy Howell, and Trace Walterman. A big thank you to all 4-H educators, staff and volunteers who contributed! Check out the Somerset County Extension 4-H

Assateague State Park 4-H youth participated in a coastal ecology trip to

Assateague State Park in Berlin on July 2, 2014. Eleven youth and adults were educated in the vast array of

aquatic species in a saltmarsh exploration class, were able to test the waters in kayaks, and throw a line out

on the beach in a surf fishing exercise.

NASA Wallops Flight Facility 4-H youth blasted off to Wallops on July 18, 2014 for

an educational experience that covered scientific balloons, rocket fabrication and testing, mission control, and a tour of the launch pads and Navy

facilities on the Main Base and Island. Twenty-four youth and adults took part in this tri-county event.

4-H STEM Camp 17 youth from Wicomico and Somerset counties participated in the STEM event held on June 25th and 52 from Worcester on June 27th at UMES. Youth were able to do several engaging hands on activities throughout the day to include constructing and launching balloons, engineering spaghetti towers for an earthquake simulation, nano-technology, bread in a bag, and teambuilding.

J.A.S.T. CAMP (Junior Academy of Science & Technology) Thirty-six youth from Somerset and Wicomico counties participated in the week long day camp held at UMES.

Youth learned about GIS, water quality, and animal emergency management. They toured the Maritime Museum in St. Michael’s and were able to spend ½ a day at the Hazel Outdoor Discovery Center. They developed, created,

and presented projects in relation to what they had learned during the week.

First Annual Somerset County 4-H Golf Tournament The 1st Annual Somerset County 4-H Golf Tournament was held on September 6th, 2014 at Great Hope Golf Course. There was a great turnout for the event, despite

the hot playing temperatures, 14 teams came out and played in support of our organization. It was a close tournament, with a team winning on a tiebreaker. One

lucky player even got a hole-in-one! It was a great time had by all that attended. Next year’s tournament is scheduled for September 19th, 2015. Thank you for

your support, and we will see you next year!
