Some Equipment used by Chemical Oceanographers
Water SamplingNiskin and Nansen bottles– Close on both ends at a
particular depth– Close using a
“messenger” (usually a brass weight controlled by a person)
Water Sampling
Rosette– Holds a collection of
water bottles– Close using an electronic
“messenger” (usually controlled from on a ship)
– Advantage: allows water collecting at many different depths
Temperature
Thermometer-measures how much heat is in the sample
Density
Hydrometer-floats in sample-measures density, which can be converted to salinity at a particular temperature
Salinity
Refractometer– Measures how much light
bends– Look through one end,
place water sample on other end to measure salinity
Other ParametersCTD– Conductivity,
temperature, depth
– Measures electrical current running through water
– Converts that charge to a measure of salinity
Other Parameters cont.
Secchi disk– Measures cloudiness (turbidity) of the water
Other Parameters cont.
DO Meter– Measures
Dissolved Oxygen in water
Other Parameters cont.
SONAR– Uses sound waves to search for objects in the
ocean
Other Parameters cont.
Side Scan SONAR– Uses a wider band of sound waves to get a 3-D
image of the bottom and objects under the boat
