SOM-102 The Church & Its Mission

Having studied the basic foundational truths of the Christian church, it is now time for us to examine more closely the church itself. Three basic questions need to be answered in relation to the church, namely What is the Church? How do we identify the

church when we see it? & How is the church supposed to engage the world?

What is the Church?

Ano ba ang iglesya?

TOWARDS A FUNCTIONAL CHURCH IN

SOCIETY

“The Church is a people, a community of people, who owe their existence, their solidarity, & their corporate distinctness

from other communities to one thing only – the call of God.”

(John Stott)

“The CHURCH is the covenant community of the

people of God.”

KATANGIAN ng Iglesya

1. Called in Grace by God Tinawag ng Diyos

– De 7:7-8 – The Lord set his heart on you & chose you, even though you didn’t outnumber all the other people. You were the smallest of all nations. You were chosen because the Lord loved you & kept the oath he swore to your ancestors. So he used his mighty right hand to bring you out. He freed you from slavery under Pharaoh (the king of Egypt).

KATANGIAN ng Iglesya

1. Called in Grace by God Tinawag ng Diyos

NT Principles

1. The Bible assumes the appointment of a formal leadership within the church, & that leadership will be provided, with authority, by those so designated within the congregation.

2. Leadership Team (cf. Ti. 1:5; Acts 14; Phil. 1:1).

3. God appoints individuals to the office of pastor-teacher (Eph. 4:11) – distinct from, yet wholly different from that of the elder, but affirmed by the elders.

BIBLICAL BALANCEThe church needs effective pastoral leadership not

just in preaching & teaching, but also in leadership in oversight & administration.

The church also needs a viable lay leadership team that is an authentic governing body with real authority & responsibility as well.

RATIONALE FOR VIABLE LAY LEADERSHIP

The need for collective consensus, or to benefit from the wisdom of the community.

The need for continuity. Pastors come & go but the community continues its life & ministry.

The need for accountability. A necessary safeguard & accountability structure for the pastor.

The Functional Cell / Ang Cell na may Pagsisilbi

There is no dividing line between the church & the world. The church may precede the world today, yet it is only living today what the world itself is ultimately called to in the future. The church in essence bleeds into the world ever calling it to its true destiny. As a foretaste of the renewal of all creation, the church cannot be discontinuous with creation. It cannot be discontinuous with the world because the church is in the process of becoming that very world renewed in Christ. Neither can it merely blend into the world for then all Mission & renewal is lost. Its presence will be in, among & for the world even as it will be distinct from the world. This is what it means to take on the incarnational nature of Christ. It is this very incarnational nature that requires the church to be a discerning community which at times both refuses conformity with the world while at other times joining in (with what God is already at work doing). – David Fitch
