Legalizing marijuana could also limit drug trafficking because people might settle for smoking it which would take a big hit for the cartels.

Drug Trafficking Along the U.S and Mexico Border

“The hidden enemy”

By: Yazmin Guillen

The History of Dangerous Drugs

The drug trafficking industry has been around for decades. Drugs come from all over the world into the United States, but the easiest country to obtain drugs from is Mexico and this is because it shares a border with the United States. Up to 63% of Mexico’s economy is made up from the distribution of drugs. Drugs are extremely expensive because of the addiction that it causes for many people. These psychoactive drugs have been around for hundreds of years. They were used in religious ceremonies so that they could go into trances to see some kind of vision. Others have used substances such as opiates for medical problems. Over the past few decades people have been creating more potent compounds of drugs which has caused more deaths, addictions, and health problems. In more recent decades drugs were used in a variety of products such as soda, tooth medication, and cold flu medication.

Drug Addiction in AmericaMillions of people in the United States are addicted to some type of drug. Mexican cartels have been bringing drugs like heroin, cocaine, meth, and marijuana into the United States to get the citizens hooked so they can sell more. Because a variety of drugs had been put in common items such as tooth medication and cold flu medication, people became use to the high that it gave them and sought out stronger dosages. If someone in a family is addicted to a drug, it is possible that their friends and even children will get addicted.

How They Import ItThere are different types of ways that cartels bring drugs into the United States. These include tunnels, drones, disguising the drugs, balloons, cannons, and corporate corruption. Tunnels are the most popular way because they can be difficult to find. They pay millions of dollars a year to people in the United States to create tunnels on their property that lead to Mexico. Tunnels are mostly popular throughout California because of all the houses that are far from other property. Recently people have also been disguising their drug imports as watermelon, medication bottles, casts, and putting them into their bodies.

It Encourages the Spread of CartelsMany women and men in Mexico who participate in drug trafficking come into the United States to pursue a better chance of selling their drugs at higher prices. They begin to claim drug territory in which they can be the only cartel to sell to that area. Cartels begin to push into other cartels area and then begin retaliations. Sometimes if a community is run by a certain cartel, they move onto a different community which is why cartels can spread quickly. This not only encourages them to sell more drugs but also causes an increase in violence. Then people in the United States want to join cartels which can ultimately get them killed. This is one of the biggest problems that the United States is facing right now.
