HFFR for CABLESModern world is unthinkable without cables. Cables transmit energy and ever growing amounts of data.

Halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) or low-smoke free-of-halogen (LSFOH) polymer compounds can be used in many ways to produce safeand functional cables. Selected polymers and the corresponding flame retardants, together with some general facts about the flame-retardant(FR) systems, are presented in the table below.

For non-polar polymers, the HFFR should be used with compatibilizer/coupling agent.

MASTERBATCHES FOR CROSSLINKING

Wire and Cables 2021

Crosslinking MB on porous carrier (Dry Silane) GRAFTAKIT EB-DS

Product: MB (VTMS - Peroxide -Catalyst) on porous granules

Application: PEX-b cable manufacturing

Advantages:▪ Safe▪ Technically effective▪ No scorch effect during

extrusion of cables (no premature crosslinking)

▪ NO special requirements for packaging

Dosage: 1-3%

Peroxide Crosslinking MB 12% GRAFTALEN MB EB-PER

Product: EBA + Peroxide + Co-agent + AOX (made in Solid Phase Reactor)

Application: PEX-a cable manufacturing

Advantages:▪ NO water-tree effect

Dosage: 20%

Hot-air Crosslinking MB on porous carrier GRAFTAKIT MB EB-HAXL

Product: MB (TEMPO + Co-agent +Hydroquinone + Peroxide) on porous granules

Application: Elastomer crosslinking by ”hot-air” techniques

Advantages:▪ Completely cures EPDM profile in

hot air oven tunnels. Improved physical properties are obtained due to the stronger crosslinked bonds.

Dosage: 1-3%

PRODUCTS for CROSSLINKING

Wire and Cables 2021

Crosslinking is possible by “reactive chemical pairs”.

Reactive pairs can be the following:

✓ GMA – Amine

✓ PO – MAH + NCO

✓ Amine + Epoxy Silane

GMA - Glycidyl methacrylate

NCO - Isocyanate

MAH - Maleic anhydride

PE-X = PE-g-GMA + GRAFTAKIT APTMS95% + 5%

PP-X = PP + GRAFTAKIT (Peroxide + PETA)95%+ 5%

Irreversible crosslinking

XL = PE-g-TEMPO + GRAFTAKIT IPDIPP-g-TEMPOEPDM-g-TEMPOEVA-g-TEMPO

Thermo-reversible crosslinking (High temperature resistance)

ADVANTAGES

▪ No scorch effect during extrusion of cables (no premature crosslinking)

▪ No “die build-up” during extrusion▪ No use of Steam batch (sauna PEX-b)▪ No use high temperature (as for PEX-a)▪ No use of harmful catalyst system (Tin based)▪ Long storage time (36 months guaranteed), no need for

special Alu bag packaging for (PO-g-GMA)

Processing Aid MB GRAFTAKIT EB-PDMS

Product: Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based lubricant, loaded on porous Ethylene Butyl Acrylate granules

Application: In the cable industry, a smallest defect such as die lipbuild-up that forms during cable insulation can snowball into a chronicproblem that affects both the production and the quality of theproduct, causing unnecessary costs and loss of other resources.

Advantages: • Processing aid for extrusion and injection molding: reduce die

drool, torque and water absorption during processing

Dosage: 0.1 – 5%

MASTERBATCH FOR PROCESSING AID
