Who is Luxology
• Luxology• Nexus architecture
• SW/PhotoView 360
• Bentley Microstation Rendering
• ModoVisit Luxology in booth #138 to learn more about modo and see the modofor SolidWorks kit in action
What is modo
• modo• Sub division surface modeler
• Sculpting tools
• Painting tools
• Animation tools
• Rendering tools
• PC & Mac compatible
Benefits of using modo
• Rendering• More control and advanced
options than PhotoView 360
• Camera effects
• Lighting options
• Materials
• Image output
AnimationMore control and advanced options than
SolidWorks
• Precise animation controls
• Custom User Channel support
• Organic behavior - i.e. morphing
• Dynamic camera manipulation
Note: SolidWorks mates, relations and constraints DO NOT transfer into modo.
Benefits of using modo
• Both• Able to add realistic scene geometry
• Able to mix NURB and poly models
• Luxology Kits accelerate workflow with lighting, water, material effects and more.
• Access to a large number and variety of assets (models, materials, environments, etc. from both Luxology and other sources
Benefits of using modo
Benefits of using modo
The SolidWorks Drive to Design series is a great example of using SolidWorks and modo together
Prepping your models in SolidWorks
Apply appearances and decals to your model in SolidWorks
Appearances and decals from SolidWorks will transfer into modo. Adding them in SolidWorks while you design will save you time in modo.

Image Quality
Adjust the slider, higher is better quality but larger file size and slower performance
Adjust image quality in SolidWorks for the best resolution vs performance in modo.

SolidWorks modo
What’s in the modo for SolidWorks Kit
Material (appearance) presets in the same location as the SW Task pane. Drag and drop similar to PV360
Shader Tree and Item List, same location as SW Feature Tree and Display Manager
Item properties, same location as SW Property Manager
Large render preview area similar to PV360 integrated preview
Specific tool palette for working with imported SolidWorks data.
Specific SolidWorks UI layout (Render layout shown) is similar to SolidWorks and PhotoView 360 UI’s, gives the SW/PV360 users a more comfortable/consistant working environment inside modo.
Render Quality Presets similar to PV360

SolidWorks menu with various import options
Enhanced SolidWorks data import options. Compatible with SW 2009, 2010 and 2011 files in both 32 and 64 bit versions of modo for Windows.
Having SolidWorks installed on the same machine as modo is not required to import SolidWorks files.
This means anyone inside or outside your organization with modo can work with your SolidWorks data.
What’s in the modo for SolidWorks Kit
Import Parts• Light - Turns non replicated parts into static meshes and all replicated parts
into instances. Source for replicated parts are static meshes• Heavy – Main difference is that non-replicated parts are imported as ‘meshes’.
WARNING: Could be VERY memory intensive• Light & Heavy - folder organization or name optimization for the item list
Import Bodies• Light - Turns non replicated bodies into static meshes and all replicated
bodies into instances. Source for replicated bodies are static meshes• Heavy – Main difference is that non-replicated bodies are imported as
‘meshes’. WARNING: Could be VERY memory intensive• Light & Heavy - folder organization or name optimization for the item list
Import Raw• General import option for all geometry types (parts, bodies assemblies)• Turns non replicated parts into static meshes and all replicated parts into
instances. Source for replicated parts are static meshes• No folder organization or name optimization for the item list
Import options explanation
What’s in the modo for SolidWorks Kit
Mesh – Heavy model representation
Basic geometry container in modo – your models. A ‘part’ or ‘body’ or ‘assembly’ from SW. Made up of vertices, edges and polygons.
Static Mesh - Light model representation
Meshes that are non-editable / frozen objects. Can be a huge memory saving technique. Item transforms can be applied to them just as to a mesh. Make by RMB’ing and converting to a ‘mesh’. Can be converted back and forth although some information may be lost due to freezing. Similar to a light weight part in SolidWorks.
Instance - Lighter model representation
Add little additional data overhead to a scene, as Instances contain no actual geometry. They instead reference a source object at render time, allowing users to generate a huge number of duplicates for an item with little additional memory usage or performance hit. Modifications to source – also modify all instances (geometry, material, etc). Similar to a pattern in SolidWorks.
Types of mesh your model will be imported as

Navigation tools similar to SW/PV360, move around your model in modo like you do in SW
Your model opens in modo with all the same appearance and decal information it had in SolidWorks / PhotoView 360.
All SW/PV360 appearances and decals are transferred into modo and show in the modo Shader Tree.
HINT1: Render under mouse functionality
HINT2: Click on material will reveal assigned material in shader tree

Specific SolidWorks UI layout (Scene layout shown) is similar to SolidWorks and PhotoView 360 UI’s, gives the SW/PV360 users a more comfortable/consistant working environment inside modo.
All SW geometry is listed in the modo item list. In this case we have an assembly so each SW part is broken into a modo mesh item with the same name as the SW file. SolidWorks data can be loaded as a static mesh, mesh, or instances based on your import options.
Selection tools (similar to PV360 2010) allow the user to more easily select areas of imported SW geometry
Large model graphics area similar to SW

Specific SolidWorks UI layout (Scene layout shown) is similar to SolidWorks and PhotoView 360 UI’s, gives the SW/PV360 users a more comfortable/consistant working environment inside modo.
Scene elements such as mesh presets, cameras and lights can be set up in the model window.
Modo transform tools allow you to modify many different kinds of scene elements.
