WHAT IS SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT?Solid waste management is the generation, prevention, characterization, monitoring, treatment, handling, reuse and residual disposition of solid wastes. There are various types of solid waste including municipal (residential, institutional, commercial), agricultural, and special (health care, household hazardous wastes, sewage sludge).

HOW IS IT DONE

METHOD OF DISPOSAL

A.CONTROLLED TIPPING/SANITORY LANDFILL- The disposal of waste material by burying it, especially as a method of filling in and reclaiming excavated pits

B.INCINERATION/COMBUSTION-Incineration is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of organic substances contained in waste materials. 

C.COMPOSTING- A mixture of decayed or decaying organic matter used to fertilize soil. 

D. DUMPING: Dump the solid waste according to nature of waste into allotted waste bins i.e. Biodegradable waste in green bins and non biodegradable waste in blue bin.

E. Following the 3R’s initiated i.e. :

I. REUSE-To reuse is to use an item again after it has been used. This includes conventional reuse where the item is used again for the same function, and creative reuse where it is used for a different function. 

II. REDUCE-Reduction of wastage to a minimum amount. This can be achieved by usage of bio-degradable goods instead of non bio-degradable goods.

III.RECYCLE-Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into reusable objects to prevent waste of potentially useful materials.
