As I write this month’s welcome the sun is out, the rain has disappeared and hopefully summer is here at last. The Olympics have begun and the nation hopes it will be an event full of

medals for our athletes. With that in mind we chat with local four-time Olympian and Silver

Medal winner Pete Waterfield who will be in the pool with fellow diver Tom Daley trying to win Gold for Britain in the Synchronised Diving.Sadly the Air Festival has been forced to postpone until next August through a number of different influences and competing demands. Solent Life will be continuing to provide support as a media partner and bring you an ongoing series of features throughout the coming year. As this August issue closed and went to print, we met with the organisers and discussed the future. This interview, highlighting the massive ongoing support they are receiving and what we can look forward to next year, will be in our September issue. In this Solent Life we visit a Romsey church that is now a gallery exhibiting the work of local artists; this year has seen many changes to the MOT, so we have recruited the owner of a local garage to explain the differences and we also take a look at the world’s best sailing regatta, Cowes Week, through the eyes of the non-sailors and see what is happening in Cowes, for those of us who prefer to stay on dry land. Finally as the kids already begin to get bored, everyone here at Solent Life hope you all have a wonderful, warm and sunny summer holiday, but most of all we hope you have a safe one.

The story of the Romsey Art Group is unique in the realms of amateur art societies; and three of its major dates all happened in one year, 1963. From an informal exhibition in the May of ‘63 it was proposed that a more formal society be formed and that was achieved by the 14th of

June that same year. The first true Society showing of the members’ works was held at the Dolphin Hotel, now Bradbeers department store, in Romsey’s Corn Market on 5th December.

A further unique aspect of this member driven society is their permanent home; something many societies can only dream of. Just three years after their inception the opportunity arose to lease a disused church in the tiny hamlet of Lee just a few miles from the centre of Romsey. It was originally built on the Broadlands Estate by Lord Palmerston in 1882, it had been dedicated but never consecrated as a church, but prior to the art society taking it over it had fallen into disuse apart from somewhere to store hay bales and some farm equipment. It took an incredible amount of cleaning and preparation before it could become a suitable venue for an art gallery and the members took on that task with great energy and so it was the rejuvenated building took on its new guise and was opened by its benefactor and then Society President, Lord Louis Mountbatten on the 8th of June 1967.

The now named Mountbatten Gallery became an instant success and over the years has been improved and added to with the North Gallery extension. This

extra exhibition space was funded and built by the membership. In November of 1986 the old church and gallery was declared a building of special architectural and historic interest and given a Grade I listing.

The Romsey Art Group has a membership of 300 artists covering all genres of art and they encourage members of all skill levels from complete beginner to amateur, semi-professional and professional exponents. Under their current President, Lady Brabourne, they hold two major exhibitions each year, the spring, traditionally in May, and the upcoming Autumn Exhibition in October.

Solent Life took a drive in the countryside and visited the charming gallery, which has lost none of its original features, and met with one of the leading members Jenny Morgan. We began talking as we gazed upon an image of US President Barack Obama, which had been produced brilliantly, by Jenny, using nothing but magazine ‘scraps’ of paper. “I have become the local recycling centre,” she said, “This image took

an age to produce but it is a format I enjoy, a previous subject was John Lennon which took six months to produce and ended up being exhibited alongside some of Lennon’s own work.”

Jenny is one of the Group’s professional artists and she admitted that with two horses and two cars to support she had to become fairly successful. “It is not an easy life being an artist, I have to work hard every day from at least 10am till 4pm and working from home an artist is always ‘at work’!”

This was not a case of self promotion by Jenny but a way of describing the effort and input by every artist within the Romsey Art Group. We strolled around the gallery, where a smaller than usual exhibition was being held in celebration of the Jubilee and she pointed out the work of many of the Group’s passionate artists.

“Our Group is not about who is best or most successful, we have a lot of people who just get a great deal of pleasure from their art. They join the Group because

there is this support as well as a good programme of events and workshops.” Jenny added.

“We have monthly demonstrations, pottery and painting classes and the two major annual exhibitions, as well as some smaller ones. The May and October shows are general exhibitions about whatever subject the artist wishes to portray, no matter what level of skill they have. The only real criteria, really, is that the piece is a complete work of art and that it is properly framed. So there is room for everyone who is a member of our Group!”

As we spoke we passed some work that was staggering in complexity and skill and others that just made the viewer smile. That said, with works of art that would grace any home wall on sale for as little as £25, it is a great opportunity to buy an original picture. Jenny commented; “It probably cost the artist more to get it framed than they will earn from the painting but they get the joy of having sold a piece of work.”

Jenny, like all of the

membership, is rightly proud of their countryside venue. “When the church was first put in our care it was full of straw and kept just as a farm outbuilding with no power or water. We have added the utilities, as well as built the extension, and now it is a wonderful exhibition space that we are all proud of.

“We have 300 members, the membership is currently full, and it seems that once you are in the Romsey Art Group, you are in for life,” she said as we took a chair in the middle of some wonderful works of art that all had been produced with passion and commitment. “We have few formal classes and workshops, as most of the teaching and passing on of experience is from the membership themselves.

“Being an artist can be a very lonely and solitary thing but being a part of a Group such as ours it becomes something inspirational.”  l

The ROMSeY ART GROUP is a group of painters, potters and wood carvers from in and around Romsey in the beautiful Test Valley. With a membership of 300 including both amateur and professional artists they are fortunate in leasing their own building, the Mountbatten Gallery, serving as a meeting place for demonstrations, courses, open studios and exhibitions.

Go to www.romseyartgroup.hampshire.org.uk for more details and some images of their member’s work.

Autumn exhibition is Sept 29th – Oct 13th at the Mountbatten Gallery, Lee. (Post Code for Sat Nav SO51 9LG)

the walk

sunwords & images by david rose-massom

facing the

Usually on a ‘there-and-back’ straight walking route it makes no matter at which end you begin your trek and which end you finish; unless that route is along the shore between the pretty harbour at Hill Head and the bustling centre of village life at Lee-on -the-Solent.

heADING eAST It is still dark out, and a little chilly, and the moon is shining brightly in the clear night sky. The early start is necessary as sunrise is a little before 6am at this time of year and as you begin your walk it is a sight you do not want to miss. Stand by the still and peaceful harbour and whether misty or clear it is a magnificent place to gaze out as the sun pokes its bright face above the landscape.

The waters of the Solent begin gold and the higher in the sky the sun climbs it then turns to a rich blue, swans glide aimlessly on the watercolour seascape. If it is a misty morning it takes on a spooky shade of soft grey across the harbour with its rows of moored yachts sitting idly in the unmoving and protected waters.

When you are ready to begin your walk just follow the pathway around the harbour wall, across in front of the white, block, building of the yacht club and along in front of the regimental row of beach huts. It is true that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west but through the year the angle at which it rises and sets alters quite

dramatically, so although you are heading slightly south of east, the sun is not directly in your face. Many landscape photographers use ‘The Photographers Ephemeris’; with the word Ephemeris coming from the Greek for ‘daily’, to map out where and when the sun, and moon, will rise and set whatever your location and if Googled there are free downloads to be found.

As the sun lifts its bright orb skyward it lights the shingle shoreline to enable walkers to see their route clearly and as the concrete footpath ends and the stones begin the sun paints any number of pictures depending on whether it is low or high tide. Low tide allows walkers to keep to the shoreline all the way to Lee-on-the-Solent but with some of the properties owning the rights to the beach above the high-water mark it may be that the route will head up the short, steep road or a footpath to the road.

There is still plenty to capture the attention as the footpath heads toward the village centre; a wooden seagull comically sits on top of a conservatory, his job is to keep real seagulls at bay but

Page 11: Solentlife East August 2012

…11AUGUST 2012 • .co.uk

part-time he makes passers-by smile. Over the roof tops of waterfront cottages the sea is glassy calm, very different to the stormy surface of recent weeks. A pretty white cottage boasts some wonderful and highly colourful hanging baskets and the rising sun bathes the colours and throws their shadows against the white wall.

The path turns and once again the seashore is in front of you, this is the car park where many kite and windsurfers launch into the Solent for their exhilarating sport and it seems that no matter what time of the day they are out there, bursting across the sea’s surface.

In a few hours the grassy knolls would normally be covered by groups of families and friends enjoying the summer, but this year it has been brave souls who have still managed to enjoy this popular area. More beach huts line the way, the first food refreshment stop, The Shack, will not be open for a an hour or two yet, but as you pass the Hovercraft Museum some of the seafront cafes will be putting their chairs and tables out front in readiness and hope of a sunny day. It is at this point also that the peace and quiet of early morning is shattered as wet bikes and jet skis launch out into their channel. It may be a noisy sport

but it is still a great one to stand and watch for a while. Further out in the Solent the first sails from journeying yachts begin to appear.

At the village centre, it is time for breakfast… heADING WeST An evening ice cream or cream tea at one of the cafes and as the evening sun dips down in the south-west toward the industrial horizon of Fawley and Calshot; walkers leave the typical and quaintly old-fashioned frontage of Lee-on-the-Solent behind. At any point on the walk turn your head and look back and it is painted in bright evening hues.

The last time I walked this direction the Solent was mill pond calm and there was virtually no breeze to ripple the surface of the sea or the low-tide puddles and pools. At low tide children and playful dogs search out the large areas of sandy shore that has been uncovered by the receding sea but this also makes the walking a little easier.

An odd few gulls swoop overhead and screech as they head toward their night-time roosts; it is an idyllic warm and calm evening. As your feet leave their imprints on the sand, rivulets of water run down toward the far off sea like lost children searching for a distant parent. All around are shells

scattered by the waves, different species and sizes, different colours and shapes; there is even a mussel with its jaws open and showing-off its meaty interior.

At the bottom of a garden and alongside a battered and weather beaten shed, stands a colourful work of art that is left open to the elements and an upturned hull of a boat lay redundant in front of it. The gardens of the odd few houses seem littered, artistically, with flotsam and jetsam that have drifted along the shore before being collected up and used as decoration.

With each step you take in the amazing sunset; that throws mile long reflections on the water’s surface, you will eventually reach the harbour as the sun begins to drop behind the horizon; it throws a red curtain, hopefully skyward and the bright sky reflects on the harbour and the waters of Titchfield Haven. This is the place to just stand in awe of nature as sunset throws out one of nature’s finest paintings.

Whether you walk morning, or evening, or even mid-day; there is so much to see and enjoy on this walk and nearby is always the centre of Lee-on-the-Solent with its cafes, art and gift shops and a very warm welcome.  l

a smile awaits

It can be stormy, raining or glorious sunshine but I never tire of driving along the coast road to Lee-on-the-Solent and it has so much more to do with the community, the village feel and the people who live,

work and trade in this wonderful place than just the scenery. No matter what the weather…

Peter Patterson is my grocer; his shop is right next to my butcher, that’s across from my deli; around the corner from my gift and art shop, just across the road from my travel agent and just a few steps away from my florist. It is that sort of place!

Peter is a staunch supporter of keeping the village centre a place of independent traders and in that respect, he is a sort of spokesman for 40 of those traders. “Lee-on-the-Solent is full of independence and independent traders and we are very proud of the fact we give visitors and residents a real local choice,” he told Solent Life when we visited his greengrocers. “When you come into my shop you could be buying produce for your evening meal that was still growing while you were having breakfast, it does not get much fresher or more local than that.

“I was born in Lee and I have been trading here for close on 25 years, the shops here are the community hub, I believe we are unique in that we have the seafront making us a wonderful attraction and added to that we have this

community of independent traders. How many villages or towns still have an independent book shop, Lee has!” he added.

“What makes Lee so special is that we still have, what many other places have lost; that independence and choice, together with the added bonus of being in a great location, Lee-on-the-Solent is a very special place to come and shop.”

It was in 1884 that a Mr C E Newton Robinson persuaded his wealthy father and Dorset landowner to purchase much of the land in the area. Over the next 25 years that investment transformed Lee-on-the-Solent into a watering spa. Through the late Victorian era the town expanded with the building of grand houses and the pier, now sadly gone.

When first built in 1888 the pier provided a stopping point for the paddle steamers that ran between Southampton, Lee Pier, Stokes Bay, Portsmouth, Cowes and Ryde Pier. It is a shame that the pier and the steamers cannot be resurrected! What a treat that would be…

During the First World War the outskirts of the town were recognised as an excellent location for a naval aviation base and in 1917 HMS Daedalus opened.

The war over, the 20s and 30s became dominant in developing the modern era for Lee, with extensive building along the seafront to form the Marine Parade.

Now it is Daedalus that is about to play a new role in the forming of Lee’s future. It has become an Enterprise Zone and is about to offer massive regeneration to the airfield and to the economy of the area, and all without affecting the community feel of that all important centre with its independent traders.

As Peter says, “The potential for this peninsula is huge, from Gosport right through to here. We are a special area full of great people and great local traders.”

Lee-on-the-Solent is one of those places where the traders greet you as a regular customer, where friends stop in the street and chat before heading for the local tea room or café for some fine cake or just an ice cream or purchasing some real meat and veg from your own little shop.  l

A t the far eastern end of Hayling Island, away from the tourists, is Sandy Point, a delightful little area that is aptly named.

Sparkes Marina sits there also; a safe haven for leisure craft and a working boatyard that is home to builder of fast boats Piranha Ribs and alongside them is a cracking little restaurant The PIRANhA BAR.

restaurant

The tide was out when I arrived on a grey and dismal evening, an egret dipped its pure white head in the shallows in search of small crabs and watching him feed in the peaceful backwater brought about the realisation of how really quiet it was in this part of the island.

In the midst of the marina sits the restaurant, an old boathouse with huge picture windows looking out across the marina and tree-lined inlets. Even in this summer’s dismal weather and at low tide it was still a beautiful scenic view from my table in the dining room.

The seating is high-backed leather chairs that are extremely comfortable, in the bar area there is also a massive leather couch, and along with the smart wooden tables and a huge photographic mural of beach huts behind long grasses, it is an attractive and neat dining area. Background music is low and as the restaurant filled, the happy chatter from the other tables made the atmosphere and surroundings a charming place to be.

The waiter was friendly and he knew his menu and specials board very well. In fact, with a massive indecision between scallops with black pudding, a favourite of mine, and a delicious sounding goats cheese tartlet his suggestion of curried sardines from that specials list brought about a decision. Once my order was taken a small bowl of olives and fresh bread were delivered to the table to help get taste buds into the right mood.

I also had a problem deciding on my main course, locally sourced sea bass sounded good, a giant of a fillet apparently, but having fish to start, I was now torn between duck breast served with asparagus or a stuffed chicken breast wrapped in pancetta. Once again the waiter’s recommendation of the chicken eased the decision making. Co-owner of this family run restaurant is Claire Wonacott and while waiting for the

first course, she sat and spoke about their business. She explained that with her husband being a part of the boat building business next door, taking over the restaurant had been an easy decision. There was still some work to be done to get it to an even higher standard, but with their fine young chef, they were happy with the progress they were achieving. She also explained that wherever and whenever possible they sourced their produce locally, adding, “We are a small business on Hayling Island so it is only right that whenever possible we use local suppliers.”

There was a sudden delicious aroma reaching my table and as Claire left to greet and seat new diners my sardines were placed in front of me. The sight of this dish equalled the smell! Plump fish, freshly, and perfectly, cooked and served with a tomato salsa and salad garnish.

The meaty flesh just pulled away from the bones and it tasted superb with just a hint of the dry curry seasoning; and the oily fish was perfectly matched and foiled by the cool salsa. This was a wonderful, refreshing and tasty starter, which came across as delicate and light despite the size of the sardines. It seems they serve the fish big in these parts! The Piranha Bar is one of those dining rooms that is equally comfortable should you arrive in casual attire after a stroll along the shore, or should you dress up for a special evening out, and the mix of clientele proved that theory.

As the light outside faded so the soft lighting inside the restaurant was turned on; in the distance the sun broke through the clouds and offered a colourful and brighter end to the day; and as the dining room filled, it all just seemed to add to the easy atmosphere.

The Piranha bar specialises in steaks, crab and lobster dishes. On the table next to me two of three men tucked into man sized portions of delicious looking steaks that made me wonder if I had chosen wisely. On Wednesday evenings, and to the accompaniment of easy Jazz music, it is crab and lobster evening; while on Mondays and Tuesdays there are more special food events each week.

I was expecting the usual prone breast of chicken for my main course but what arrived was a superbly displayed dish of Stuffed Chicken in Pancetta with crushed garlic potatoes, redcurrant jus with seasonal vegetables served in a side dish. With such great care taken over the presentation it just had to have been a dish with all the ingredients prepared well – and it was.

The trio of vegetables were perfect, carrots and beans that were crisp and yet delicate to the bite and lovely soft, tender and succulent asparagus spears. The sauce was flavourful but gentle, the crushed garlic potatoes

delicious and the chicken part of the ensemble was moist, well textured and melt-in-the-mouth. This was all topped off with a pancetta crisp that added a little more flavour and texture.

Finally it was my usual choice of dessert, so predictable if it is on the menu but it is also the benchmark dish against which I judge all restaurants; the Crème Brulee! Again well presented, in a flat dish surrounded by summer berries to add a splash of colour; the caramel topping was dark and crisp and my spoon ‘cracked’ down into the smooth dessert below. That toffee topping balanced well with the soft, slightly rich custard base and it was delightful and refreshing after my previous courses.

I had stopped by the bar previously when out on one of my walks, but just for a lunchtime coffee on the roof terrace with its wonderful

views, and wondered at the time what the food would be like. I now had my answer and in a word, superb. Good service, fine surroundings, magical views and highly recommended.l

A few months ago, Solent Life featured the sympathetic renovation of the Superintendant’s House in the Royal Clarence Yard on Gosport’s waterfront; it got us wondering about the history of an area that has now become a leisure

marina and elegant place to live.

The street and building names alone give clues to what was formerly a victualling yard and brewery for the Royal Navy; Weevil Lane (not what you think), The Salthouse, The Malthouse, The Granary, The Bakery and Salt Meat Lane all evoke thoughts of past uses for the old buildings that have now become homes and restaurants, and one beautifully beamed building, The Slaughterhouse, is in the late stages of negotiations towards becoming a church.

Before the Royal Clarence Yard took on the role of keeping the RN fed it was an important Naval brewery which was overseen by a victualling agent called Mr Weovil, and it is believed the road leading into the Yard was a corruption of his name rather than that of the weevil that used to attack and feed on the ships’ hard-tack biscuits.

It was in 1690 that Captain Henry Player, who lived in a wonderful residence in the yard called Weevil House, opened a brewery specifically to supply the Navy and following his death it passed through several owners,

In 1774 the Navy consisted of a little over seventeen and a half thousand men but with the outbreak of the Napoleonic Wars this quickly rose to 107,000 and they all needed their daily ration of beer and so it was that in around 1780, £8,800 was spent on a new brew-house that was capable of supplying beer for 13,000 men. Eventually in 1783 the Government of the day took over its management and the establishment took on the name of the King’s Brewery.

Originally, all the brewing and victualling of ships took place in Portsmouth but the Government moved them across to Gosport and in particular the Royal Clarence Yard. A purpose

built establishment that cost, what was in those Victorian days, a staggering £71,500.

Civil Architect to the Navy was George Ledwell Taylor and the state-of-the-art complex was designed by him with extensive use of steam power being utilised to carry out the work on the project. Considering the size, and magnificence, of the buildings the timescale to complete the project was very short, just four years!

The name of this new supply yard came from King George III’s son The Duke of Clarence, who, following the death of his brother George IV became King William IV. As a 14 year old prince, William had been sent to sea and would rise to the rank of Lord High Admiral and take a great interest in the lives and well being of sailors. William died just five years after the yard was completed and there is no record that he ever visited the establishment that bore his name.

Queen Victoria was a frequent visitor, who even had her own railway station in the yard. This led to a private pier and enabled her to board the Royal Yacht and cross the Solent to her beloved Osborne House. The Royal train would pass through Gosport’s wonderful station which had opened in 1841, then through the ramparts to Royal Clarence Yard.

Incidentally, The Slaughterhouse was built in its current location having been relocated from adjacent to the landing stage for the Royal Yacht due to many complaints from the Royal Household of ‘offensive effluvia’ from the old slaughterhouse which discharged into the harbour where the Royal Yacht moored.

Queen Victoria died at Osborne House in 1901 and royal mourners gathered at the Royal

Clarence Yard to take the coffin by train to London; it was the last time the Royal Landing was used!

On July 31st 1970 a 300 year–old Royal Naval tradition ended at precisely 6-bells in the forenoon watch when the last rum ration was issued aboard ships of the Royal Navy. A day forever to be remembered as BLACK TOT DAY!

As the yard was a main storage location for the Navy’s rum, when the rum rations ceased, so it ended the last of the operational functions and a need for the yard. Royal Clarence Yard was officially closed; only re-opening briefly in 1982 for the Falkland’s Conflict.

In 2001, Berkeley Homes undertook a £100 million regeneration scheme that has sympathetically brought together the historic and the modern, creating a series of attractive squares, preserving the rich heritage and appearance whilst creating a new residential and business community on Gosport’s waterfront.

Throughout the scheme, the architects used studies of the archaeology and history of the site initiated by English Heritage and Gosport Borough Council, as well as conservation advice.

In 2011, Berkeley Homes and the owners of The Superintendant’s House were awarded Green Plaques by the local Gosport Historic Society for their work in faithfully restoring and retaining the history.

Today it is a marina to many yachts and home to many local people from all walks of life so rather than the history of a wonderful location coming to an abrupt end it continues to write its own story.  l

Despite the typical weather which has become synonymous with Summer 2012,

on Sunday 8th July over 300 people braved the wind and rain to support and attend the 10th Anniversary Celebrations of the Portchester Memorial Gardens.

Centred around a lovely (and dry!) marquee, families picnicked and enjoyed tea and cake kindly sold by the Rowans Hospice’s Fareham Support Group.

A dedication to the gardens took place at 12 noon by the chaplain of the Rowans Hospice, Lance Blake and this was followed by the release of hundreds of purple and yellow balloons each carrying a memory card with a personal message for a deceased love one.

The melodic sounds of the Caribbean Lites steel band also helped brighten the cloudy afternoon. The children attending were thoroughly entertained by a balloon artist, a magician and a facepainter.

Raffle tickets were sold and prizes were kindly donated by the Marriott Hotel Group, Kutis, The Spinnaker Tower, The Flower Studio, Passion Flower, Fun City,

Cooperative Funeral Directors, Enid Maunder Beauty Salon, The Hayward Studio, Fareham, Town and Country Memorials, Odeon Cinema and Garsons. The team at Portchester Memorial Gardens are very grateful to them all for their kindness.

Katy Watson, Office manager for the Memorial Gardens added “I would personally like to thank our families, suppliers and staff for all their support in order to make the 10th anniversary celebrations possible. We raised £350 for the Rowans Hospice and they have expressed their gratitude to everyone”.  l

If you are not keen on flying then we have some great opportunities for you to cruise across the Atlantic on the beautiful Queen Mary 2. With low season prices starting from just £1229.00 per person for an inside cabin (12th November 2013 West Bound) there can t be a better time to travel. Cunard have just introduced a new fare structure for 2013. The new fares are known as Vantage Fares. Their Vantage fare offer a great range of benefits. Better still they are supported by their price promise, which means you can secure your booking early safe in the knowledge that if Cunard reduce their Vantage fare they will automatically give you a complimentary benefit such as on board credit or a upgrade to the value of any reduction in price. So it pays to book their Vantage fares therefore

giving you 100% peace of mind. I am told by my client`s that they feel it is unfair to book early as in the past they have felt penalised for doing so as a late deal may become available at a cheaper cost, with the Vantage promise you can now book early with confidence.  l

going the extra mileCarters of Swanwick have been an integral part of the community for over 90 years. They are able

to provide a level of service and a choice of equipment to meet all needs and requirements and this level of service has recently been highlighted by three wonderful stories.

Following an award of two grants from the Sports Council, Sarisbury Cricket Club in Allotment Road, have made some fantastic improvements to the grounds and clubhouse and despite this season’s miserable

weather the club is a hive of activity with many dedicated club members taking care of the grounds and preparing for weekend matches with the help of a shiny new Kubota mower and lots of training and helpful hints and tips from the team at Carters of Swanwick.

Jim Whitmore was the proudest man in the world when he carried the Olympic Torch through Southampton last month. He was nominated for the honour because over the last 13 years Jim has run 92 marathons raising money for charity. He was inspired by the sad death of his nephew Matthew aged 10 months, from cot death and runs for the charity FSID, the cot death charity.

On 23rd December Jim plans to run in his 100th marathon in his hometown, Portsmouth. He will run the other 7 between August and November – quite a feat!

Jim also runs a gardening business and has been buying his machinery from Carters of Swanwick for over 20 years. Jim says he feels very much part of the Carters family and counts the team as his close friends – he even shares his season ticket at his beloved Fratton Park with one of the team. Jim says that without the support of companies like Carters of Swanwick, he couldn’t have achieved what he has.

David henson was born in Southampton and lived locally until he joined the Army. 16 months ago David lost both of his legs in an IED explosion in Afghanistan. His rehabilitation has been swift, helped by his extremely positive ‘can do’ attitude to his injuries; and he is now back at work helping those

he terms as ‘less fortunate than himself’ to come to terms with living with their injuries. David is looking forward to studying for a degree in Biomedics to enable him to design and produce prosthetics and other products. Recently David and his girlfriend returned to the local area and purchased their first home together and David was determined to get involved in landscaping the garden and DIY. He turned to Carters of Swanwick and after a discussion about his needs and requirements, they have been able to adapt a ride on mower with hand controls; which David describes as simply ‘brilliant’. With its trailer attached, David uses his mower as an all terrain utility vehicle – as well as the gardening he has recently ripped out his old kitchen and transported all the rubbish and rubble to the skip with his mower!

Although more interested in hard landscaping David is learning about flowers and plants too and a visit to Chelsea Flower Show earlier this year saw him meeting another keen gardener, the Queen. Solent Life looks forward to telling you more of David’s story next month.

COwES week is one of the UK’s longest running sporting events and, with the exception of the two world wars, has been held every August since 1826. Traditionally, Cowes Week takes place after Glorious Goodwood and before the Glorious Twelfth;

the first day of the grouse shooting season; although the Olympics have delayed it by a week this year. During the week-long festival of sailing events, the town of Cowes becomes one long street party with plenty to entertain the non-sailor.

“Ladies Day is a celebration of women in sailing; a third of all competitors who race at our event are women.” Michelle Warner is Sales and Marketing Director for event organisers, Cowes Week Limited. “Despite these numbers, the perception of Cowes Week is that it is a male dominated event.

“Ladies Day focuses on the fact that sailing is one of the few sports where women and men can compete equally”. The day culminates in the awarding of a stunning Isle of Wight Glass trophy, where the winner is selected from nominations given to a panel who decide on the woman who has done a lot for the sport. It is not necessarily about the most high profile sailors; it is about the women who are just out there doing it and making a difference.

“The first winner in 2006, when Ladies Day was first introduced, was the late Betty Moore who, at 88, had sailed every Cowes week since 1947,” Michelle continued. “Sadly she passed away in 2008 but she was a true inspiration.”

It is up to fellow sailors to nominate a female sailor who has inspired them. “All nominations have to be in by the Friday

just before the start of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week and then a select panel of judges comprised of Double Olympic Gold Medallist, Shirley Robertson; Yachting World’s Features Editor, Elaine Bunting; the CEO of the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation, Sue Tibballs; and myself; who then decide upon the winner. All nominees are invited to a reception on Ladies Day, where the winner is then announced. This award is in recognition of the outstanding contribution, commitment, or achievement of women in sailing – from the Corinthian sailor and those overcoming difficulties in order to succeed in sailing, to those who have undertaken remarkable challenges. Over the last five years, a diverse cross-section of female sailors has received the Trophy.”

Ladies Day was introduced with a simple objective: to raise the profile of sailing for women. “Over the last decade, there has been a marked increase in female participation at Cowes Week, and the number of female skippers has leapt by 150% during this time” Michelle added. “Ladies Day uses Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week as a platform to celebrate

women in sailing, and by doing so, help spread the message that the event is fully inclusive.”

“If there are a group of ladies who do not sail but still want to get involved in the Ladies Day celebrations, the special Ladies Day lunch at Northwood House is an ideal opportunity.” She added.

Northwood House on the Island is an iconic early-Victorian Grade II listed house with glorious painted function rooms and surrounded by parkland, occupying a prime position above Cowes and on Ladies’ Day they are offering a special lunch, prepared by David Rogers of All About Catering, the in-house caterer. “Many people asked for a special lunch during Cowes Week, so, ladies, can go along and enjoy this special event.” For more details and how to make reservations – visit the website, www.northwoodhouse.org. “Unlike other events like Royal Ascot, our Ladies Day is not about dressing to impress, but

more about celebrating women in sport and achieving equally.”

There is also a Family Day at Cowes, on the Sunday. “This is about promoting what the family can do during the event.” Michelle said. “You can go to Cowes and get family discounted prices for spectator boats; there are kids’ competitions and plenty of street entertainment.

“For families that sail together, they get a special flag to fly and we award on-water prizes. Whilst being a competitive sailing regatta, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is an inclusive event”

The party theme culminates on the Friday evening with the spectacular Fireworks display, beginning at 9.30, when every boat gets out onto the water and every inch of beach on both sides of the Solent fills with spectators for this annual and magical event. Aberdeen Asset Management has extended their sponsorship

of the week-long event until 2015 and the financial services company has also extended their support to include a significant proportion of the funding for the traditional firework display.

The regatta may be an on-water event but one of the great things about Cowes Week is that spectators can watch much of the event from the shore; with The Green and The Parade being good vantage points as well as plenty of opportunity to get on spectator boats which go out on hour-long trips at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm, departing from Trinity Landing on Cowes Parade.

As well as the many buskers and street entertainers that make Cowes a week long party venue, one of the highlights of the daily events, as well as one of the best locations, is to watch the starts each morning in the area between the Castle of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the cannons – as long as you don’t mind the loud bangs! Here you

can get right on the line and see who got the best start and which boats were over the line. You can also hear the race officers giving their countdowns and calling the starts from the Royal Yacht Squadron battlements.

Then in the afternoon, head along the Green towards Egypt Point to watch the Cowes Week fleets as they finish.

Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is all about the sailing, it is a regatta after all, but there is so much more to the event including some great days out for the non-sailor. Cowes fills with a wonderful party atmosphere and even if the sun does not shine then the fun party feel that fills to town of Cowes will put a smile on your face.  l

LYMINGTON YAChT hAVeN Opening times 10am – 5pm daily

Running to coincide with the Southampton International Boat Show, Ancasta’s Lymington Used Boat Show, provides the perfect opportunity to sell your boat. Now celebrating its 28th year, as the show’s reputation grows, so do the success stories and both serious buyers and vendors alike grasp the opportunity of increased activity.

The show consistently attracts buyers to the Lymington Yacht Haven because, geographically they are so enviably placed at this intense boat buying time of the year, and Ancasta’s qualified brokers are able to discuss every aspect pertaining to the boats on display. This knowledge not only extends to each boat, but Ancasta are able to offer help and advice on finance, insurance and berthing. If you’re thinking about buying a yacht or motor boat this year, make sure you don’t miss out on employing their expertise. The whole Ancasta Lymington team will be available all day, every day throughout the show.

ThINKING OF SeLLING YOUR BOAT? There are many reasons why selling your yacht or motor boat with a broker is a good idea. However, one of the biggest attractions is that it costs you very little unless a sale completes. Leighton King, Marketing Director for Ancasta International Boat Sales says…

“… this is one of the main reasons that many owners come to us. We have a strong presence in the market and handle hundreds of enquiries every day from buyers contacting our network of 18 offices. We can offer owners instant access to these buyers, something that many of them try to do privately through small magazine adverts and the internet. It may seem like the cheaper option but you can quickly rack up big bills by placing your own adverts, whether they are on or offline. We offer an instant cost effective solution to this, not to mention the added comfort that a qualified broker will handle all of the viewings, negotiations and subsequent transactional aspects involved in selling a boat, and believe me, there are a lot!”

WhY ShOULD YOU DISPLAY YOUR BOAT AT The ANCASTA LYMINGTON USeD BOAT ShOW? The Lymington Used Boat Show attracts buyers from all over the world. Historically ,this can be attributed to two very definite reasons. Not only is the show run concurrently with the PSP Southampton International Boat Show, but the Lymington show offers a huge range of quality vessels, in one location, and all are available to view on the same day with a qualified broker.

“Although contact with these buyers is possible through the usual Ancasta service, brokers have noticed over recent years that buyers will wait until a used boat show is happening before making the trip to the UK. They’ll tend to visit the show as well as view other boats in the local area. Displaying your boat at the show ensures that this unique annual opportunity is maximised” says King.

ThINKING OF BUYING A BOAT? Buying a yacht or motor boat is an expensive exercise, so naturally you will want to be absolutely sure that you buy the right boat at the right price. This often takes many months of viewing boats all over the region (often further afield) and you can sometimes feel as if you are going round in circles. A Used Boat Show is the ideal opportunity to maximise your time by spending a whole day or even weekend, viewing as many boats as you like in one location. This allows for more meaningful comparisons between the different makes, models, sizes, ages and prices without the inevitable time lag that is usually attached to this process.

solent | motors

safety firstwords by david rose-massom

Since the first day of the year new MOT rules and testing procedures have been phased in, leaving many motorists wondering, is it going to cost them more money and what it is exactly they are paying for?

Solent Life spoke to garage proprietor Phil Upshall of Titchfield Motor Works. “The changes have been brought about through two different directions, one is our own Government tightening up on emission controls and the second with the EU and ongoing safety regulations,” he explained.

The MOT test has become more technical, one addition for example is the checking of, what Phil refers to, as the ‘worry’ lights. “The ABS warning light on your dashboard display has always been checked but now other dashboard indicator lights are being examined so that all lights linked to safety features must be working properly.” Phil continued.

“A genuine concern within the industry is that in the current economic climate many drivers are saving money by delaying their car maintenance and of course that becomes detrimental to safety.

“Something we have increasingly noticed is that it is not the boy-racer who is ignoring his car, in fact they seem to take great care of them; but it is mostly family cars that are being ignored when it comes to servicing and repair costs. It is frightening when we see DVD players fitted to keep the children happy in a car with illegal tyres!”

Phil went on to explain that good car maintenance is always essential. “Regular

servicing and checks will eventually save you money. Greater care needs to be taken, with this poor summer and all the rain, even tyres that are borderline cease to be efficient.

“The modern car is a complex machine controlled by computers with electronic safety aids and therefore a more complex MOT, together with equally complex equipment is needed to test the cars.”

Despite new additions to the test and new testing methods, many of the failures for the MOT are still the old favourites - lights, brakes and tyres. “It is the old and simple things that cause a vehicle to fail; a few simple checks by their own owners can avoid their car failing. Check all your light bulbs are working before bringing your car in for an MOT, have a good look at your tyres and very simple tasks such as filling up your windscreen washer bottle will help. Many garages will give you free advice on the safety levels of your tyres, if you just ask.

“With the new rules it is a simple thing again to keep an eye on your dashboard warning lights; basically they are ‘warning’ lights so ignore them at your peril.”

Despite the many new checks the MOT will still take a garage between 45 minutes and an hour to complete. “The new style MOT now has some 150 checks on safety

related items and emission levels. The MOT is not a service and nor should drivers feel it replaces a service, it is merely a collection of safety checks to ensure a vehicle’s road worthiness.”

From November all cars produced prior to 1960 will no longer be required to be tested; Phil explained. “Basically there are so few cars built prior to 1960 on the road, and they would now be considered a classic car. Still 19 million vehicles are tested in the UK each year and when it comes to ensuring your safety on the road the test fee should be considered good value for money. Drivers should not fear the MOT; it is there to keep your car and, ultimately, your family safe.

“I have been conducting MOTs for 36 years now and I am still shocked and amazed by what I see with many of the cars that are brought in for testing!” Phil said as he showed me a set of tyres that had just failed an MOT; they were from a family car and on one side they were worn down to the inner fabric and just waiting to rupture.  l

To find out more about the new MOT there are two essential websites…www.mottester.co.uk and www.vosa.gov.uk/Solent Life would like to think Phil Upshall for his help with this feature:www.titchfieldmotorworks.co.uk East Street, Titchfield, PO14 4ADThe maximum fee for an MOT is currently £54 but many garages offer lower fees. Titchfield Motor Works, for example, charge £52.99.

Starting school… some children love it, some fear it and some hate it… but as a rule they all have to do it!

Generally, the first two biggest transitions in a child’s life are when they start primary school and then, seven years later, move up to secondary school. The schools do everything they can to prepare the children for these transitions and I talked to the Head of Harrison Primary School, Carolyn Clark, and some of the teachers of both reception and Year 6, to find out more about what is involved.

Most children starting at Primary School will have had some experience of pre-school, and this is where the Reception teachers start when preparing for the new intake. They visit the pre-schools, chat to the staff and find out about the personalities, requirements and family circumstances – whether there are siblings, grandparents or similar involved in the upbringing etc. Whilst there the teachers will watch and interact with the children on an informal basis so your child will probably not even be aware that he or she was talking to a ‘Big School’ teacher!

In May all the parents are invited into the school for a meeting, as well as informing the parents this meeting allows the teachers to get feedback on, amongst other things, the child’s friends. This is taken into account when deciding on which child goes into which class. It appears this is something of an exact science; as well as friendships being catered for the classes have a mix of spring, summer and autumn born children; an equal spread of boys and girls; and siblings of older children have the same teacher if possible. The children go in for two taster days during the summer term and on these days the school aims for the children to be in the classes they will inhabit when starting school properly. However tweaking does take place especially if, for example, it is found a group of particularly boisterous boys

have inadvertently been placed together! In early September the reception

teachers will visit every child at home. For me, it felt a bit like getting a visit from the Queen; I spent the preceding two days cleaning and tidying the house! This time gives the children a chance to meet their teacher properly prior to starting school – the first day is much easier when you are greeted by a known and friendly face!

That first proper day can be a big step for both the children and the parents. Separating from the parents can be an issue for the children but the teachers are relaxed about parents spending time in the classroom, helping their child settle for as long as it takes. In my case I felt as if I lived at the school for the first couple of weeks. The school aims to encourage independence and this can be more challenging for the parent than the child; the cloakroom is often full of parents helping their children to hang up coats, which the teachers know children are able to do when Mum or Dad is not around! Under certain circumstances parents can choose if their child goes full time immediately or attends part time for the first half term. The only requirements are that the child attends for a minimum of 15 hours a week and that the teachers are advised beforehand what the schedule is for each week. As much as starting school is a steep learning curve, the reception year of school has a play based curriculum known as Play to Learn, which is similar to the pre-school environment. Throughout the year the children are taught skills in much the same way as we parents teach skills at home, they play but they learn at the same time.

And for all first time mums – your child will claim not to remember a thing that they did during the day – do not take it personally; seven years on mine still apparently does

nothing all day!The fun and games of Reception class

are far behind them when they start at Secondary School. Here the biggest adjustment is to being fully independent, managing their time and moving from class to class and teacher to teacher. Gone are the days of one classroom, one teacher and only three pieces of homework a week. My daughter is one of those moving up this year and I’m not sure who is dreading the deluge of homework more, me or her! The process of getting the children ready for the move starts at the beginning of Year Six. The teachers from both the Junior and Secondary Schools sit in on each other’s classes and watch the teaching. The Heads of Department from the senior school come and look at the children’s work, informally meet the children and get to know the Junior School environment.

In many ways Year Six is all about preparing the children for Year Seven and the move to secondary education. Throughout the year the teachers and children discuss what this will entail, the curriculum is aimed at the transition to Year Seven and the teachers aim to foster the children’s independence as much as possible. There are two transition days, when the children visit the new school, meet the rest of their tutor group and are given a taster of what their new school days will entail. Apparently all the Year Six children came back from their transition days buoyed up and looking forward to the new term in September.

A week after I write this article my daughter leaves Harrison Primary School. I will be in the playground to see her and her year group come out of school for the last time and I know I will shed some tears, as I did when she started school and as I no doubt will on her first day at Secondary School.

These transitions are big steps – for both the children and the parents!  l

I have been advising in the financial services industry for 20 years and because of my extensive knowledge and valuable experience I was approached to run my own Partner Practice

within the exclusive and award-winning St James’s Place Wealth Management Group. I put my success down to having a key objective; to provide a highly professional, competent and personal approach to financial planning, wealth management and client services for both private and business clients. My role is to pass on my knowledge and experience by helping and educating my clients in the world of finance relevant to their own specific circumstances; which is why I have partnered with Solent Life magazine, we’ve already helped many readers and received positive feedback from many new clients.

Within my Practice I have ensured that all of the financial services needs of my clients are covered and have the exclusive access of the distinctive approach to investment management and the guarantee of my advice to you from the St James’s Place Wealth Management Group. I have the support of 629 members of SJP staff dedicated to providing my business with investment, pension, tax, trust protection and technical services, so I am confident in dealing with all the challenges ahead and the constant financial legislation changes that are occurring, which is vital in keeping client’s financial arrangements up to date.

My philosophy is quite simple, if I can add value to a client’s financial affairs, then we can work together. I look at helping clients CREATE more wealth, help them MANAGE it more effectively and PROTECT it. People often feel they should know what investments they have got and are often afraid to find out what it is they don’t know. If your car goes wrong, and you are not mechanically minded, you would not hesitate to take it to an expert; so why not see an advisor about your finances? My opinion and advice cost nothing, there is no hourly rate, so come and have a chat.

This is becoming more and more important as the advice received is dramatically changing; we have already seen major banks on the High Street withdrawing from offering advice. My personal speciality is dealing within the savings

and investment market including Inheritance Tax, trustee advice and Long Term Care and Retirement planning for personal individuals and businesses; which we will look at in more detail next month.

However, let’s look at Mortgages and Protection, as this is causing clients the most concern at the moment, especially with gender re-pricing coming in at the end of this year. I have set up a mortgage review service which includes life insurance comparison quotes… So how does this work in practice?

We have access to the whole of the market, which means we can search all of those providers that normally include exclusive offers that are not available on the High Street. We all like to shop around or even ‘compare the market’ in this digital age; but how can you shop around when you don’t know which shops to go to? Well, we will provide different options, helping you to make an informed choice by showing several quotes with no advice fee payable; if I can add value we can take it further, if not then things stay as they are – it’s that simple!

We run a comparison service on your life insurance arrangements on the same basis; if we can beat your quote we change, if we can’t then you stay as you are. Your life insurance premium includes all costs, so no other fees are payable. Why do you need to review this? Because, amongst other things, life insurance premiums are going to increase under gender re-pricing

Gender neutral pricing may not be at the forefront of your mind or something that you are even aware of, however, the need to review your existing cover is becoming more urgent than ever. The European Court of Justice has ruled that from December this year, insurance policies should not discriminate between men and women meaning that protection plans, whether life cover, critical illness, health cover or medical cover, will be sold taking no account of gender.

The most obvious implication will be an increase in the cost of your cover. The application of this pricing will vary amongst providers but any percentage increase applied to a monthly premium over the term of your cover is not to be ignored.

July’s winner… oliver nelson

photography

Month on month here at Solent Life we have been amazed at the quality of images from our younger photographers; maybe envious would

be a better description because some of the work has been outstanding.

There is only one way that these young artists began and that was when someone gave them a camera. My grandson, now 4½, has been using my Canon camera for the last 18 months or so. It began by just placing the camera on my knee so he could point it in the right direction without carrying the weight and he would just press the shutter button; enjoying the fast click, click, click of the shutter.

Now when he sees a scene he likes the look of, and he does have a good eye, he asks for my camera, braces himself, aims through the viewfinder, frames the image using the zoom lens and then fires just one frame, checking the digital image on the camera’s screen and then re-shooting if he is not happy with the image. Or as he puts it, “I have not got the shot yet Granddad!” He will then re-shoot until he has the image he likes.

Now he is no David Bailey yet, but he enjoys recording the scenes he sees when we go out for our walks and of course it helps that I encourage him. The reason for this personal little story is that everyone has to start somewhere; Harry now has his own digital camera, which when he gets bored with taking pictures plays games, but it cost less than £30, a small price to pay to get him started.

With the summer holidays upon us and vacation time arriving it is a good way of occupying your young ones by getting them to use inexpensive digital cameras and at the end of the day downloading the images onto your computer and seeing what they have achieved and maybe picking the shot of the day, print off a copy and then build a montage of images which they can then enjoy as an aide memoir of their summer holiday.  l

delightfully different

The hilarious new stage version of The Ladykillers written by Graham Linehan (who wrote the classic Father Ted), comes to The Mayflower in October. The show stars Michele Dotrice

(Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em), Shaun Williamson (Extras and EastEnders) and Clive Mantle (Casualty and The Vicar of Dibley). Director of the show Sean Foley gave us an insight into the creation of the original.

When the distributors of the 1955 film The Ladykillers were trying to come up with a tag-line to describe it to its potential audience, they confronted a huge problem. It was undoubtedly a hilarious comedy, but one that also thrilled with its comic violence. It was definitely a hard-nosed heist story, but one with moments of pure slapstick. It was a bit ‘theatrical’, and possibly even, God forbid, ‘arty’, with its expressionistic lighting, and larger than life characters, but was it okay to laugh at and sympathise with; the criminals on screen? They were stumped.

How had such an exciting, unusual, but utterly successful, collision of elements come about?

One night, William Rose, an American born scriptwriter – who joined the Canadian forces during the Second World War, married an English girl, and decided to stay in Britain after the war; had had a dream...

He woke up with an idea that was already complete in his head. In the dream, a gang of criminals commit a successful robbery while living in a house belonging to a little old lady. Belatedly, she discovers their crime. A sweetly innocent and highly moral soul, she insists they go to the police and give themselves up. Gradually the five men realise that to escape, they will have to kill her. But, villainous as they are, will they have the wickedness necessary to murder such a benign and helpless figure?

His dream had the amazing power and timelessness of a fable. It was a story that dealt with good and evil in a playful way. A tale that could make you laugh and shiver at the same time.

Alexander Mackendrick, an American born Scot, and one of Britain’s greatest ever film

directors, encouraged Rose to turn his tale in to a film script. The two of them, alongside a very gifted creative team, worked flat out to turn this story into that singularly British popular piece of entertainment: an Ealing Comedy.

But the very best comedy and entertainment - and their film belongs in this category – is always underpinned by something which can tickle the audience on a deeper level. Mackendrick has written himself about how, only after the film had been completed, did he and Bill Rose realise its theme.

The delicious collision of dream, fable, comedy, morality play, expressionistic art, slapstick, and farce that they had put together, amounted to a wonderful ironic joke about the state of England. If we look at the characters of The Ladykillers, they are a composite cartoon of Britain’s corruption: the Major, a conman, is a caricature of Britain’s decadent and ineffectual ruling class; One Round is representative of the used, brutalised masses; Harry is the worthless younger generation; Louis, the dangerously unassimilated foreigner; and Marcus embodies the collapse of moral and intellectual leadership.

It is undoubtedly a wonderfully ironic joke that still applies today. As is the ideal of Britannia – the nation itself – represented as a tiny sweet old lady, who shares the name of a Nineteenth century idealist (William Wilberforce), and lives in a shabby, structurally unsound house, surrounded with memories of when Britain’s navy ruled the world. Whether post war, post Empire, or post recession; this story and these characters, still have a deep hold on our funny bone.

But who wants to hear about ‘depth’,

‘themes’, and ‘structure’? (Save it for the programme notes...!). What we all really want is jokes to laugh at, characters to love or hate, a story to grip, and a shiver down the spine. God damn it, we want entertainment! The people who made ‘The Ladykillers’ knew this better than most, and they didn’t disappoint.

Their dedication to entertain has enabled the film to become part of the culture, and William Rose’s unconscious imagination is with us still. And now, his characters will live again, but in a new way...

What was a dream, became a story. This story was a fable, and was turned into a film. That ‘classic’ film has now inspired a new group of people to create a play. But, just as the film itself contains so many extraordinarily blended elements, this ‘play’ does to. That blend is new. In fact, as we all realised very early on, to re-create The Ladykillers for the stage, it could be no other way: it was only by bringing new ideas – new jokes, new thrills, new versions of these classic characters to life – that we could have stayed true to the original work.

But there’s still the same problem to confront. What do you call this concoction, this new blend; A Play? A Comedy? A Thriller? A Heist Gone Wrong? A Fable with Laughs? A Laugh with A Fable? A Chiller? A Good Night Out? A Bad Night In? A Fun Night In And Out?...

I think we should give up. Just as the original creators of this wonderful comedy got there first sixty odd years ago, so did the original writers of the tag-line. Faced with insuperable odds – with jokes, with ‘themes’, and with this truly original mix of genres – they came up with a phrase that I’d happily embrace to this day...

‘The Ladykillers – A Delightfully Different entertainment!’  l

How clean is your Tile? NATuRAL Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and worth every penny of your investment! But what happens when they get dirty? Do they lose a little of their ‘wow factor’. Are you tired of getting down on your hands and knees to scrub grout lines or have you just given up. Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help.

They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid.

Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor now?

It can be surprising how even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts soil which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again. The

old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever!! And what if the grout is that badly stained? No problem! They can even re-colour the grout for you, from a range of subtle colours.

After the cleaning process they apply a professional application of an impregnating sealer, which does what it says. It impregnates the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay… which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom.

Let the Tile doctor clean and protect for you. Call now on 0800 695 6959 or visit www.hampshiretiledoctor.co.uk, for a free ‘demo’!

sleep

solent | health

Hands up! Who, at some point in their lives, has woken themselves up with a particularly loud snore, looked around to check no one else heard and then drifted back to

sleep?

I’m hoping most of us have and I am not alone that. Luckily this is usually nothing to worry about if it only happens occasionally. However for some people snoring and waking frequently can be the symptoms of a condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).

I talked to Liz Walker, the Lead Nurse for Sleep and Ventilation in the Respiratory Outpatients Department at QA Hospital. She defines Obstructive Sleep Apnoea as the cessation of breathing, or abnormally low breathing during sleep. The stopping of airflow is generally due to the collapse of the upper airway due to lack of muscle tone; it only occurs at night as during the day we have sufficient muscle tone to keep the airway open.

Liz continues “If you stop breathing in your sleep the brain is stimulated to awaken in order to start breathing again. Often you are not aware that you are awakening. If it happens frequently then you are constantly waking throughout the night and you are likely to suffer from extreme sleepiness during the day.”

Apnoeas are where the breathing stops completely for more than 10 seconds and hypopnoeas are episodes of shallow breathing or abnormally low respiratory rates. Both are associated with a drop in oxygen levels. The Apnoea Hypopnoea Index (AHI) is the number of either events happening each hour added together to assess the severity of the Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Up to 5 an hour is normal and nothing to be concerned about. 5 to 15 is mild OSA, 15 to 30 moderate and over 30 is classed as severe Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Liz treats one patient who reaches 135 an hour; she takes two or three breaths, and then stops!

Obesity is the main reason for the condition; having a large neck and a lot of

fatty tissue, which the relaxed muscles cannot support. Smoking and high alcohol intake increases the risk. It can also be caused by having nasal polyps, a low or small bottom jaw, or having overly large tonsils or adenoid problems; which generally affect children.

The main symptoms include snoring, a partner witnessing the breathing stopping during sleep, waking with a feeling of choking and being very sleepy. This sleepiness can cause drifting off in front of the T.V. or during inactive times, but as it worsens it can lead to falling asleep whilst eating or mid conversation or more seriously whilst driving. Untreated sleep apnoea sufferers are seven times more likely to have a car crash. Nocturia (needing to go to the toilet at night) and impotence can also be a problem; however the two symptoms of snoring and day time sleepiness are the best indicators of the condition. The snoring and sleep apnoea can also have a huge impact on relationships and it is often the partner that encourages the sufferer to seek help.

The diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is normally made after a sleep study is carried out at home. After the G.P. referral Liz and her team will issue the patient with a sleep recorder which measures oxygen levels, air flow, heart rate and the body’s position – whether the patient is lying on their back or side. The measurements are recorded in a box which is strapped around the waist. On completion of the study the data card is downloaded, analysed and the severity of the condition discovered. In some cases the patient may have positional Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, where they only have the problem if lying on their back. This is remedied with the scientific use of a tennis ball strapped to the back which unsurprisingly encourages the patient to lie on their side!

Sleep Apnoea is generally treated with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure – or CPAP – which is something of a mouthful and therefore it is appropriate that it is delivered via a mask. Air blows through the mask from a machine and this airflow splints the airway open. Liz says “Patients describe it as similar to having one’s head out of a train window. As you can imagine wearing the mask is not always easy and patients can need quite a lot of support.” Those with severe or moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea will need to use the machine for the rest of their lives, unless something changes, such as weight loss. Those with mild Obstructive Sleep Apnoea have a trial of CPAP for a month to see if it has an effect – if there is no difference then it may be that the daytime sleepiness is due to another condition. A possible alternative for people with mild or moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is a Mandible Advancement Device (another mouthful!) which is like a gum shield that is used to bring the jaw forward and open up the airway at the back of the throat.

As uncomfortable as these treatments may seem they have a miraculous effect. The apnoeas, the snoring, the daytime naps, the frequent trips to the toilet all stop and the patient wakes up feeling refreshed after sleeping all night, sometimes for the first time in years. Liz happily says that patients tell her the treatment is life changing and she is on a mission to treat everyone in the area who suffers from the condition.

After all who doesn’t feel better after a good night’s sleep?  l

It is tough putting up with the things that life throws at us from time to time, a bad day at work, a motorist just carved you up on the motorway or you spilt the milk – or your child is born and his, or her, brain has been starved of oxygen and this has caused

them to suffer from Cerebral Palsy; now you have tough days all day and everyday; year in year out…

In 1952 a group of parents of children with cerebral palsy, came together and formed a support group; and the ROSE ROAD ASSOCIATION was born and now in 2012 it is celebrating its 60th birthday.

Beth Rogers of Rose Road told the story to Solent Life; “There was certainly nothing locally in the way of support for anyone with a disabled child back in those days. It took just one parent, at the end of their tether, to place an advert in the local paper for others in that situation to respond,” she explained.

“They first met in a front room which led to regular Saturday gatherings with up to 30 young people who had cerebral palsy. From there things grew quickly and it was only two years later in 1954 that Rose Road had raised enough funds in the community for a custom-built day centre. By 1959 they also had a school for 40 children.”

Children with cerebral palsy have difficulties in controlling muscles and movements as they grow and develop. The nature and extent of these difficulties may change as children grow but cerebral palsy itself is not progressive: the injury or impairment in the brain does not change. However, the effects of the brain injury on the body may change over time for better or worse.

Depending on the precise area of the brain that is affected, there may be associated difficulties which become obvious during development; for example, in vision, hearing, learning and behaviour. This all puts strain on the

family unit and this is where the support work of Rose Road comes into the equation.

Beth continued with the story. “Primarily, we provide a range of themed activities to offer a balance of structure and imagination that encourage children’s creativity, enable them to develop confidence and allow them to have fun, details of these and other services, can be found on our website. Also by just being here we enable families of children with disabilities to get together and in doing so realise they are not alone.

“The children may also be very much alone in everyday life and by coming here, they mix with other children with the same difficulties as them. We have respite care for children up to the age of 25, and we have just gone up to that age because that is an important transitional period as they leave education,” Beth continued. “This means that from a packed daily routine and mixing with their peers, they are suddenly in an emptiness, which in turn is also very hard on parents.”

At the Bradbury Centre in Aldermoor, Southampton, in addition to the highly trained team of workers and volunteers, there are outreach workers. “They go out into the community to help. That could be something as simple as picking up a child from school, taking them swimming and then out for a meal. This not only gives the family a short respite from the constant care, but also allows the child to communicate and integrate outside of the home.

Many of the outreach workers are young and so they become friends as well as carers.

“We give the children a sense of normality!” Beth added.

“Each child has their own core plan, a care worker who will best suit them and we fit our organisation around their needs; not ours. Over the years as an organisation we have learned to change and adapt to fit the requirements of the children and their families.”

The name of this wonderful organisation comes from the address of one of those early meetings 60 years ago, and now with some 350 children, and their families, to care for it has come a long way from one parent at the end of their tether who was brave enough to advertise for help and support.  l

> TAmING OF THe SHRew 26th SePTemBeR– 6th OCTOBeRSet in 16th century Italy ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ is probably Shakespeare’s most knockabout and definitely not politically correct comedy. The beautiful Bianca wants to get married but her father won’t let her marry until her elder sister katherine is married first. It’s a comedy in which the sparks fly!

Come and enjoy a wonderful evenings entertainment on a balmy summers evening. Why not bring a picnic on the green outside the barn with views over to Titchfield Abbey. The Great Barn is a beautiful and atmospheric setting for our Shakespeare Festival with connections back to Henry V and the Earls of Southampton – Shakespeare’s patron. ARMED FORCES DAY

Despite the poor weather, crowds still descended on Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard to celebrate Armed Forces Day. With all the entertainers and stall holders in costumes from the 1940s it was a fun day with plenty to entertain the whole family. www.historicdockyard.co.uk

August

solent | gardening

greenfingerswe’ve had a lot of rain but look on the bright side – plants have been refreshed, the

lawn is greener than usual and we haven’t had to do much watering. So long as the ground isn’t waterlogged (not a phrase we’re used to this time of year!) new plants can get nicely

established with a combination of damp conditions and warmer air.

Dare we hope for fine weather in August, so we can sit back and enjoy the garden? If you haven’t been able to venture out in the garden much, have a blitz on weeds so they don’t get a hold and seed. Deadheading roses and other flowering plants will encourage more blooms. Pinch back straggly growth of summer bedding plants. SUMMeR PLANTING There’s still a lot of summer to be enjoyed and plenty of bright colours are provided by late flowering perennials such as Michaelmas Daisy, Montbretia, Agapanthus, Echinacea, Perennial phlox and Dahlias, and they continue flowering until the first frost arrives.

Perennial grasses are at their best this month and are great for complementing strong colours of later flowering perennials. Try feather grass (Stipa tenuissima), sometimes called angel hair, with its soft, feathery flower pinnacles which turn golden in August

Fountain grass (pennisetum), is named for its graceful spray of foliage and gives a loose, informal gardening look. It sends out beautiful, fuzzy flower plumes in late summer and the white, pink, or red plumes continue into autumn.

Greenhouses and cold frames have come into their own this season, since outdoor grow-your-own was a washout in July. If you don’t already have one, they’re worth the investment and Garsons has a selection that fit in a small space.

SUMMeR PRUNING While your secateurs are handy, wisteria needs to be pruned to encourage flowering and prevent rampant growth. Cut down straggly new growth to 2-3 leaves from the base. Give evergreen hedges a shape and tidy up.

Summer pruning of fruit trees will channel water and energy into fruit production particularly figs and apple trees and help prevent silver leaf disease in plums and cherries.

Flowered herbs such as thyme and lavender need a trim to stop them becoming woody. For a steady supply of fresh herbs like parsley in winter, cut the younger leaves, rinse, dry and place in a plastic bag then pop it in the freezer. No need to chop it, simply crush them gently when frozen and use as required. SPRING BULBS Bulbs arrive at the Garden Centre in mid-August. This includes the autumn flowering crocus, which is increasingly popular so don’t miss out. Plant bulbs in late August or September. There are many kinds available including daffodils, snowdrops and tulips for a burst of colour early next year. Use a slow release bulb feed and bulb fibre to give them a healthy start. Until next month, happy gardening. If the rain keeps on, we’ll do a feature on plants for boggy conditions!  l

60… .co.uk • AUGUST 2012

As August comes around it signals the end of summer. It’s a eventful time on

the reserve. Many butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies are still on the wing and many species of wader are returning from their breeding sites.

If you keep an eye on the clumps of brambles and the hedgerows you are no doubt going to spot the characteristic territorial displays of the Gatekeeper butterfly. August is the key time to see this delicate insect. It is often found feeding on the nectar of bramble flowers. This is a feisty species and the males can be seen chasing rivals and even other species out of their territories. The Gate keeper has a single brood during the year. The females lay eggs singly on blades of grass. When the caterpillars emerge they feed on various species of grass mainly at night to avoid predation. This species over winters as a caterpillar, surviving the harsh weather conditions by burying themselves in the ground vegetation. The caterpillars enter the chrysalis stage in the spring before emerging as adults from early July.

August is a busy month for birds with many of the waders starting to return from their breeding ranges, hopefully after having a successful season. Usually the adult birds return first with the juveniles following

on later. Two of the commoner species, black-tailed godwit and greenshank, will be returning form their breeding ranges in Northern Europe, most with their bright breeding plumage still in tact. As some birds start to return others are leaving our shores. You may notice swifts beginning to disappear towards the end of the month. This species migrates from

Africa as do swallows, house martins and sand martins which are a familiar site at the moment. If you are keen to learn more about these birds then why not drop in on one of our bird watch sessions.

Summer maybe fastly fading but with autumn comes the promise of hedgerows awash with the colour and fruit. The blackberries will soon be ripe for the picking!  YOUR LOCAL WILDLIFe TRUST
