First off – be sure the pet you have or are about to get suits your lifestyle – a large dog need lots of space and all dogs need regular exercise.

Start as you intend to continue – many acquire a new pet, lavish it with attention, and then banish it to live outdoors once the novelty wears off. This could lead to all kinds of behavioural problems such as barking, chewing on furniture, digging up the garden and aggression.

Buy quality dog food - while what you feed your dog depends largely on how much you are willing to spend, ensuring your dog gets the very best you can afford will lead to fewer health problems, and fewer vet bills.

Every dog needs a collar – yes so you can attach a lead and take them for a walk, but also to for a disk with your contact details. You could have the vet insert a microchip under their skin when you get your pet inoculated. This will enable your pet

to be identified if it ever goes astray.Training – the happiest dog is

one that is not always in trouble for doing something wrong. Pets have to be trained to behave and while you can do this yourself, there are plenty of good dog schools in East London that can help. If you take the time to train your dog, you will give him the tools he needs to live happily in the human world, and you will be all the calmer for it!

The East London Fine Art Society Peep Show exhibition opens on Thurs-day 8 August at 6.30pm and concludes Saturday 24 August. Entries must be in on or before Tuesday 6 August, 5pm is

the cut off time. Anybody is welcome to participate, non-members pay R15.00 per entry and members R5.00 per entry. Annual membership to the East London Fine Art Society is R200.00 per annum.
